Huawei unveils P50 Pocket clamshell foldable phone

Huawei has unveiled its latest smartphone, the foldable P50 Pocket.

The device features two displays, including a circular screen on the outside. The circular display is smart as it’s in line with the company’s Huawei Watch display in terms of design.

The clamshell-style folding smartphone features a 1-inch external display for quick access to notifications/widgets. The P50 Pocket will launch in China first and likely won’t make its way to Canada.

P50 Pocket features a pretty cool gold or silver finish and a 3D pattern designed by Iris Van Herpen from the Netherlands. When the device unfolds, it sports a 6.9-inch display with a 21:9 ratio and 120Hz display refresh rate. It also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G processor, a 4,000mAh battery and Harmony OS.

Additionally, the foldable sports a 40-megapixel primary shooter, a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens and what Huawei calls a “super spectrum” 32-megapixel shooter. The China-based company says the shooter features a greater range of colours when compared to its other smartphones. Further, the phone features a hole-punch camera in the main display, and you can use the 1-inch cover screen as a viewfinder if you want to use the main shooter.

The P50 Pocket also offers both face unlock on the main/cover screen and a fingerprint sensor.

The P50 Pocket with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage variant costs CNY 8988 (roughly $1,807 CAD). The foldable device will also be available in a 12GB of RAM/512GB storage version for about $2,219 CAD.

Leaked Huawei P50 Pocket render shows off foldable smartphone’s rear

Huawei is planning to unveil a new foldable smartphone on December 23rd, and it looks like renders of the device have surfaced online.

The foldable, Huawei’s P50 Pocket, offers a clamshell design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The four renders are nearly the same and showcase different widgets available on the phone’s cover display. The widgets include one for music, one for calls and a couple of others. Below the cover display, the phone houses its three rear-facing cameras.

The P50 Pocket is expected to use a metal and glass backing, but it’s unclear from the photos.

While the phone will likely launch globally, we probably won’t see it release in Canada as it will lack Google Play Services and will feature Huawei’s EMUI.

The P50 Pocket’s other specs are currently unknown, but the phone is likely offers high-end specs to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, though it will likely still be inferior to Huawei’s Mate X2 foldable.

Oppo offers a sneak peek of its first foldable smartphone

Three years after this Oppo patent showed off a foldable smartphone design, the Dongguan, Guangdong, China-based company has finally released an official sneak peek of its foldable smartphone.

The smartphone, dubbed the Oppo Find N, is described as “a foldable smartphone that is truly easy to use and can provide an innovative experience.” According to Oppo, almost four years of research and development and six generations of prototypes went into developing the Find N.

While the company didn’t provide any information about the device’s specifications, it did say that it kept in mind two guiding principles while developing the product — first, that the device is beautiful and second, that the device is useful and easy to use.

The company also says that it has worked meticulously to solve common foldable smartphone problems, including creasing and durability issues. Further, the device is expected to “offer powerful performance while maintaining an appropriate weight and size.”

Oppo plans to unveil the device on its INNO Day, which is scheduled for December 15th. It’s important to note that Oppo doesn’t officially sell its devices in Canada. That said, given Oppo is the parent company of OnePlu — a manufacturer that does sell its smartphones here — there’s a possibility that the technology featured in the Find N could make its way here at some point.

Google’s Pixel foldable will reportedly feature Pixel 5-like camera shooters

Unfortunately, it looks like Google’s foldable Pixel smartphone that is rumoured to launch in 2022 will lack the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s high-end cameras.

The upcoming foldable Pixel, codenamed ‘Pippit,’ will feature the Pixel 5’s 12.2-megapixel IMX363 sensor, instead of the 50-megapixel primary shooter included in 2021’s Google phones. 9to5Google’s APK insight team discovered this information through Google’s Camera app.

Previously, Google’s Pixel foldable was linked to the ‘Passport’ codename, but at some point, the tech giant seems to have changed it to ‘Pipit.’ It’s unclear why, but this has happened in the past and it’s not unusual for internal project codenames to shift mid-production.

According to 9to5Google, the foldable Pixel’s camera will be accessible when the phone is folded, suggesting you can also still likely use it when the smartphone is closed.

Additionally, the Pixel Fold will also come with two 8-megapixel IMX355 sensors on the inside and outside of the device. Likely, these 8-megapixel shooters will both be used for selfies, including one above the external display and another for the inner screen.

While disappointing, including a lower-grade camera in a foldable device isn’t uncommon. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 features camera specs worse than its Galaxy S21 Ultra.

9to5 also uncovered code that references the foldable as “isPixel2022Foldable” within the Google Camera app, hinting that the device could launch as early as next year.

However, if Google’s Android 12L release schedule is accurate, the Pixel Fold won’t launch until at least March.

Huawei Mate V will reportedly feature its own V-Pencil

Huawei recently patented a new foldable smartphone with the codename ‘Mate V,’ and now it seems like the handset is getting its own stylus called the V-Pencil, according to LetsGoDigital

The stylus was patented at the European Union Intellectual Property Office with the description “electronic pen, computer stylus, touchscreen stylus.” This patent goes hand in hand with the Mate V device spotted on Weibo and first reported by @Panda.

According to its patent, the Mate V is a foldable flip smartphone similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, which would make it the first of its kind to work with a stylus. To clarify, while Z Fold 3 works with the S Pen stylus, the Z Flip 3 isn’t compatible with Samsung’s stylus.

Huawei is holding a product launch event in Austria, Vienna on October 21st, so there’s a possibility the China-based company could reveal the Mate V there.
