When to jump into today’s Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 Collision event

Today, Fortnite is holding its Chapter 3 Season 2 Collision event. It’s been quite some time since Epic Games introduced a wider-scale event of this magnitude. These special events encourage players to jump in as the studio closes the book on another season.

This event is dubbed Collision and promises another epic-scaled battle. Similar to previous Fortnite events like the Chapter 2: Season 3 event, which saw players go toe-to-toe with Galactus, Collision sees players battle giant mechs. The one-time event will likely be offered in a special playlist.

For those keeping up with the long-running story and lore of Fortnite, Epic has been teasing Mecha Strike Commander with different parts of his body showing new features. In an ongoing puzzle, content creators have been able to piece together that the mech’s arm looks to be a run. While other parts house rockets and other armaments.

Players will likely be joined by The Seven going up against the Imagined Order once again as they use The Collider to consume The Loop.

Here is when the Fortnite Collision event begins:

North America: 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET
UK/Ire: 9pm BST
Europe: 10pm CEST / 11pm EEST
Asia/Oceania: 5am JST / 4am AWST / 6am AEST

The event concludes Chapter 3 Season 2. Following the Collision event, Fortnite will undergo some small and larger changes. New POIs will likely appear. A new Battle Pass will be available as will a shift in the meta.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 begins on June 5th.

Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming stick and TV app could come ‘in the next 12 months’

Microsoft is a leader in cloud gaming and its ecosystem continues to expand on that front. For over a year, we’ve known the company is working on developing a stand-alone Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming stick to plug into a TV or display. Additionally, a native smart TV app is also on its way.

This streaming-focused future could very well arrive in the next year. Most recently VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb and Tom Warren from The Verge corroborate the story that Microsoft’s next major shift is on its way. Grubb states that the Xbox streaming stick or “Roku-like puck” may launch “in the next 12 months.”

In November 2020, Xbox head Phil Spencer first discussed the possibility of being able to stream games directly to a TV or display without a console. Later last year, Spencer confirmed the development of both a streaming stick device and a native TV app that could function as an Xbox Cloud Gaming portal.

However, since that time, Microsoft remains quiet about when this concept will become reality. Grubb and Warren both bring up an “Xbox Everywhere” initiative Microsoft is working on. “I’m pretty sure we’re gonna hear a lot more about it in the coming months,” Warren says. Based on the name, one can imagine taking your games and progress with you from a console in one room, to a smartphone, and to a TV in another.

This past week, Microsoft and Epic Games launched Fortnite on Xbox Cloud Gaming. This release is important for a number of reasons. First, the company is prioritizing a launch of a free-to-play game on its service. It also doesn’t require a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Secondly, Epic Games and Fortnite have been banned from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store. Launching on Xbox Cloud Gaming sidelines the ban. Microsoft and Epic restore the ability to play Fortnite on iOS and Android devices.

Finally, while it’s only one title, it’s another leg forward in a reality where a player’s entire library is accessible through Xbox Cloud Gaming. This is something Microsoft has envisioned since day one of this initiative. As more devices and options are brought into the fold, the ecosystem effectively opens up to more players.

Epic Games’ Ukraine fundraising effort raised $144 million across two weeks

Today marks the end of Epic Games’ fundraising initiative for Ukraine within Fortnite. Between March 20th and April 3rd, the publisher raised $144 million USD (about $179 million CAD) in proceeds to donate to humanitarian efforts. This fundraiser began in a response to the ongoing conflicts between Ukraine and Russia.

As Fortnite kicked off its most recent season, Epic Games announced that the total of all in-game purchases made across two weeks will be donated to Ukraine relief efforts. As the two-week period of the charity concludes, Epic Games will begin donating the full $144 million.

Rather than donate the accumulative amount to a single group, Epic Games is donating to a series of different Ukraine relief efforts. These include Direct Relief, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the World Food Programme.

Given the anticipation of Fornite Chapter 3 Season 2, the game saw a staggering $36 million raised during its first day. The new season introduced beloved character skins for Doctor Strange as well as Prowler. A brand new mode where the building is removed was initially tested and is now a permanent mode for the battle royale.

The momentum hardly waivered with players all contributing to the grand total but purchasing V-bucks for in-game skins and accessories. Epic Games confirms that V-bucks and cosmetic purchases from retail cards are donated to Ukraine efforts as well.

In addition to Epic Games, Microsoft has pledged to donate its net proceeds. All purchases of Fortnite content on the Microsoft Store over the last two weeks are also being donated.

Epic Games joins a growing list of companies striving to contribute to Ukraine relief funds. Riot Games, Humble Bundle, and more have raised money for charity.

Tom Holland returns to ‘Fortnite’ as Nathan Drake in ‘Uncharted’ crossover

Fortnite‘s next big crossover will feature Uncharted’s Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer.

The crossover was revealed after Fortnite creator Epic Games teased the collaboration late on February 11th with a treasure hunt website. After fans solved a 14-character password puzzle (spoiler, the solution was: ‘sicparvismagna’), the treasure hunt site revealed a trailer for the crossover:

Fortnite players will be able to acquire skins representing the movie and game forms of the Uncharted characters when they arrive in the game on February 17th. Epic Games items will be available in the Fortnite item shop. The movie will hit theatres on February 18th.

Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake in the upcoming movie, which makes this his second Fortnite appearance after he joined the game as Spider-Man in December.

As The Verge points out, the trailer only highlights the four skins, but there will likely be other cosmetics coming as part of the collaboration.

White House, 35 states, Microsoft back Epic’s App Store appeal

The White House, 35 U.S. states and Microsoft have filed ‘amicus curiae’ briefs supporting Epic Games in its appeal in the antitrust case against Apple.

9to5Mac explains that third parties not directly involved in cases may want a say, particularly when the case has significant public interest. Third parties can file amicus curiae — literally “friend of the court” — briefs with advice for the judge. These briefs all essentially argue the original judge made a legal error in deciding how a key antitrust law applies to Apple.

To refresh your memory, the original ruling concluded that Apple didn’t meet the legal tests to be considered a monopoly but did rule that Apple had to allow developers to use third-party payment platforms if they want. Apple and Epic have both filed appeals on different aspects of the ruling, with Epic focusing on the conclusion that Apple isn’t a monopoly.

Foss Patents detailed the three amicus briefings. The first was submitted by Utah’s state attorney general and included 34 other state attorneys general (AGs). Foss Patents notes the list is basically the same as the states suing Google alongside Epic in a separate antitrust case. The list is as follows:

“The states–led by the Beehive State–are (in alphabetical order): Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, D.C. (I’m not taking a position on the controversial question of statehood here), Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah (submitter), Vermont, and Washington.”

The states’ argument focuses on Section 1 of the Sherman Act, a key piece of U.S. antitrust legislation. A short explanation from 9to5 is that Section 1 says companies can’t make agreements among themselves to distort competition (for example, several companies agreeing to charge the same price for something). Section 2, however, says that companies in a dominant position can’t take unilateral actions designed to give themselves a monopoly.

Foss Patents explains that the focus on Section 1 is strange for the Epic v. Apple case but notes that it stems from the states’ own case against Google.

The White House claims not to support either party, but its arguments back Epic

Microsoft’s amicus brief focuses on “Apple’s extraordinary gatekeeper power” and serves as an example of another ‘Big Tech’ company concerned and impacted by Apple’s conduct.

Finally, the White House filed its own amicus brief, claiming that it’s “in support of neither party” before laying out several arguments that support important elements of Epic’s case, including that Section 2 of the Sherman Act should apply to Apple. Foss Elements has a great breakdown of the brief here.

However, it’s important to note that these amicus briefings do not mean Epic will win its appeal. A judge is obliged to consider amicus brief arguments but ultimately makes their own decision. Still, the sheer amount of support behind Epic in the appeal is impressive and could definitely lead to a ruling in Epic’s favour.

Fortnite takes a longer route to make its way back to iOS

More than 17 months after being removed from the App Store, iOS and iPadOS users can soon play Fortnite on their iPhones and iPads again, though they won’t be able to head to the App Store and download the title.

Starting next week, you’ll be able to stream Fortnite directly on your iOS or iPadOS device through Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud streaming service. Nvidia announced that it will launch “a limited-time closed beta for mobile, all streamed through the Safari web browser on iOS,” next week. The closed beta will allow Nvidia to test its server capacity and graphics delivery along with touch controls. Nvidia says it aims to add more people to beta in batches over the coming weeks.

“While PC games in the GeForce Now library are best experienced on mobile with a gamepad, the introduction of touch controls built by the GeForce Now team offers more options for players, starting with Fortnite,” reads Nvidia’s blog post.

Nvidia says that the limited-time beta is now open for registration for all GeForce Now members.

While the streamed version via GeForce Now won’t be as smooth and responsive as an in-device app, it’s still better than nothing for those longing to play Fortnite on their iPhones and iPad again.

Further, Nvidia states that it is working to add more touch-enabled games to its streaming service, many of which it will reveal in the coming weeks and months.

Nvidia’s cloud gaming service offers two membership options. The first is a free route that will give you standard access to the platform with a one-hour gaming limit per session. Once the hour passes, you can queue again to get another hour of free gaming in, although you may have to wait a while.

Nvidia also offers a paid membership option that gives you priority access to gaming servers without any session length limit. This subscription costs $12.99/month or $64.99 for a six-month membership.
