Connor Hellebuyck sounds off on his future with the Jets.

The Winnipeg Jets had their season come to a disappointing end on Thursday when they fell to the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, doing so in just 5 games.

Many believe that the early exit for the Jets could mark the end of an era in Winnipeg, especially after fiery comments from Jets head coach Rick Bowness following the Jets’ elimination in Game 5. In fact, Bowness’ comments about his own players were so harsh that National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman was compelled to say that this current core of the Jets has in fact come to an end.

“If there was any question that it meant the end of this particular core, I think that eliminates it,” said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. “I think that ends the question, if there was any doubt.”

It’s one thing to hear these kind of comments from an NHL insider, but it is another matter entirely when members of that very same core also start hinting at a future outside of Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Jets star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made comments that left a great many questions about his future as a member of the Winnipeg Jets. If the Jets are intending to move towards a rebuild, it sounds like Hellebuyck doesn’t intend to be a part of that situation.

“I’m not interested in a rebuild. I just want to compete…” said Hellebuyck on Saturday.

Hellebuyck also added that he wants to win a Stanley Cup, and is cognizant of how much time he has left in his NHL career.

“My main goal is to win a Stanley Cup… I’m starting to run out of time,” admitted Hellebuyck.

As per Murat Ates of The Athletic, Hellebuyck also confirmed that he has not had any discussions about an extension with the Jets as he is set to head into the final year of his current deal.

Hellebuyck had another strong performance in the regular season with a 2.49 goals against average and a .920 save percentage over 64 appearances for the Jets, and he would almost certainly be one of the most highly sought after commodities as either a free agent a year from now or as a potential trade candidate prior to then.

Are these the cottage building materials of the future?

Cottages are often nods to the past—built by great-grandparents and renovated by generations since. But with increasing recognition that building materials do much more than shift an aesthetic—they boost energy-efficiency and overall comfort—it’s time to look ahead. Whether you’re starting from scratch, or addressing issues in an existing cottage, consider future-forward tech:

Reach for the top

Options range from simple (and affordable) reflective roof paints to more expensive solar shingles—or even a living roof of organic matter. What we put on top can have a big impact on how we keep our cottages cool. Learn more about it.

A rising tide floats all cottages

Could your cottage survive a flood? It might, if you adopt an old technology that’s finding new purpose. The Buoyancy Foundation Project, out of the University of Waterloo, has been studying amphibious construction. It works, says one researcher, the same way a rubber duckie works in your bathtub, but with a “vertical guidance system” so your cottage doesn’t simply float away. Learn more about it.

The butterfly (paint) effect

Keen to produce a beautiful paint without toxic dyes and pigments, researchers in Berkeley, California, found inspiration in the blue morpho butterfly’s incredible colour. The blue of the butterfly, they say, is produced by tiny overlapping microscopic scales arranged across the surface of the wing that reflect light. By achieving this structural colour in paint, researchers say, they can create a far safer (and more spectacular) coating. Learn more about it.

Bacteria-built brick

Concrete’s carbon footprint is the size of Sasquatch so alternatives are highly sought after. But a brick made of cyanobacteria, the same stuff that turns our beloved lakes green with algae? Yes, please, say the University of Colorado researchers, who insist there are no dangerous health effects from their bacteria, sand, and gelatin creations. What’s more, these bio bricks sequester carbon, effectively erasing concrete’s behemoth footprint. Learn more about it.

Whale-food windows

Nature is often way ahead of us in its problem solving. Consider krill, the tiny sea creatures that release a pigment in bright sunlight to protect themselves from ultraviolet rays. Windows in a University of Toronto lab got the krill treatment when researchers discovered they could similarly create a way to shut out the sun’s rays. Learn more about it.

A whole earth approach

If you’re starting from scratch, consider the earth-friendly techniques of the aptly named Earthship, rammed earth construction, or straw-bale. All beautiful, all sustainable, and all will be the talk of your cottage community. Learn more about it.

35th anniversary celebration: Times we basically predicted the future

It was rent to be
In our March 2000 issue, we published a story by David Cameron called “Internet Biz Offers New Lease on Life.” This picture of Mike and Jean Campbell using a desktop computer on their deck may be dated, but they were on the cutting edge of a soon-to-be cottage trend: renting out cottages online.

The couple owned a property on Warner Bay on the Bruce Peninsula, not far from the place where Mike’s family had owned a cottage for 30 years.

But it was the 18 years that Mike spent as Bruce County’s senior planner, followed by a stint as the area’s 911 coordinator, where he became familiar with the many bays and hamlets of the region, not to mention the potential of the peninsula’s often dormant cottages.

In 1995, Mike and Jean did a mail-out (yes, through the mail) and found that 17 cottages in the area were interested in renting. They set up a “Web site” for Bruce Peninsula/Huron Shores Cottage Rentals, including an early take on a rating system that judged a property’s privacy with a score out of five. The site was so successful that, after three years, Mike left his planning job to run the venture full-time. Soon after, the couple listed their 100th cottage. The Campbells were able to work from home for most of the year, but in the summer, they would move their fax, scanner, two computers, and two kids to the cottage for July and August. Though that sounds pretty great, summer is obviously a busy time for cottage rentals. “One of us has to stay in the office,” said Jean at the time, “while the other goes for a swim.”

Twenty-two years later, even we’re in on the cottage rental game—we have a hub on our website. Man, you can’t help but wonder if Mike and Jean had the foresight to buy shares in Amazon too?

Ducking out of the office
“The Electronic Cottage,” was a famous catchphrase coined by American futurist Alvin Toffler 10 years before we published a story by Yvonne Cox in 1989 about working remotely from the cottage (“Taking Care of Business,” Aug ’89). Can you believe? According to Toffler, this revolution would be made possible by “word processors, computers, facsimile machines, and teleconferencing equipment.” Well, considering that’s a prediction from more than 30 years go, it’s pretty spot on.

But even he couldn’t predict the effect that a global pandemic would have on accelerating the trend of remote working. Cox goes on to say, “Futuristic predictions aside, most urbanites still do not grab a home-brewed coffee, close the den door, and fire up the computer for another day’s business.” We beg to differ.

Extending the weekend isn’t a pandemic innovation either: “With his cellular phone,” Cox writes, “[Then-CEO of Rogers Broadcasting] Jim Sward gets the jump on Friday evening traffic and occasionally postpones his trip back until Monday morning.” And these early-adopters were already starting to grapple with conflating the cottage and the office. ” ’Why?’ ask incredulous cottagers for whom the vacation home, however humble or grand, symbolizes an escape from profit margins, demanding bosses, nagging clients, and the shrill summons of the telephone.”

The technology, however rudimentary, presented an opportunity that we’re still taking advantage of today: without the convenience of such time-saving tools, Jim Sward said he would be hard-pressed to get away at all. Now, surely there was a 1990 article about unplugging we could read? No? I guess we’re still trying to figure that out.

Back to the future
You might not think of cottagers as living in the future, but as we’ve highlighted many times, you’ve always been innovative.

Ciara works ‘extra hard’ on post-baby abs

Ciara has to work "extra hard" to push her abdominal muscles back together after giving birth.

The 32-year-old singer welcomed her second child Sienna into the world 11 months ago and, although she’s managed to get back to her pre-pregnancy weight, she has to train her core extra hard because she’s been left with a baby pooch, which is known medically as Diastasis recti where the abdominal muscles part down the middle and leave a slight bulge after birth.

Taking to her Instagram account, the brunette beauty uploaded a photograph of her toned tummy and captioned it: "I have Diastastis Recti from both of my pregnancies, so I have to work extra hard to regain my core strength. Determined. Let’s Go Mammas! [sic]"

As soon as she gave birth to Sienna last April, the ‘I Bet’ hitmaker made it her mission to lose the 60lbs she gained during her pregnancy and after just one month she’d already shed 20lbs.

Captioning a photograph of her scales reading 178.6lbs, she wrote: "I said I wasn’t going to gain 60lbs Carrying Sienna, and… I did exactly that!! … 4 weeks after her birth I lost 20 lbs. This Weeks Goal is 10lbs. I was 183 yesterday. #BounceBack #LevelUp [sic]"

Ciara fell for Sienna less than a year after she and her husband Russell Wilson – who had agreed not to have sex until after they were husband and wife – got married in July 2016.

Speaking about their decision to wait, Ciara said "I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship – and once you know you’re really great friends and you’re what we call ‘equally yoked,’ where you share the same values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone. Knowing that you’ll always have the friendship and that you can always go back to it is very important, and very powerful.

"I have to give credit to my husband for sharing those views. It’s awesome how it all worked out. We women think with our hearts and with our minds. When we see a guy, we envision what he’s like and whether this could be something special. Guys see us from an exterior point of view – that’s something I learned along the way as a woman…. You shouldn’t feel like you have to give your body away to get someone to like you."

Ciara also has three-year-old son Future with her ex-partner Future.

Russell Wilson and Ciara get a pet dog

Russell Wilson and Ciara have got a new pet dog.

The couple have opened their home up to a beautiful silver grey puppy who they hope will act as best friend to the children they raise together, son Future, three, and 10-month-old daughter Sienna.

Russell, 29, unveiled the majestic mutt on his Instagram account by posting a photograph of him cuddling the pooch to his 3.3 million followers.

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback captioned the snap: "New Pup Alert!!! Welcome to the Wilson Family! [sic]"

Russell must be followed by an abundance of animal lovers as the photo has been liked almost 200,000 times.

The addition of a pet to the family is a further sign that the sportsman and Ciara, 32, are settling into domestic bliss since tying the knot in 2016.

The ‘Goodies’ hitmaker has made no secret of the fact that her husband Russell inspires her in life and gives her belief that she can achieve anything.

She said: "Love conquers all. Love is the most powerful force on Earth. You can’t go wrong if you put love in."

Previously paying tribute to Russell on Instagram, Ciara said of her man: "I love you so much … You inspire me … I am grateful for the man that you are to our house, the father that you are to our kids, the lover that you are. You inspire me to be better. You make me a better woman. I am a better woman because of you. You make me want to figure out ways to love in a way that I never knew I could but I sure want to try hard as heck to make you happy because you make me feel so good … You are the best to me."

Ciara: Love can conquer all

Ciara thinks love is the "most powerful force on Earth".

The 32-year-old singer – who has son Future Zahir, three, with her ex-partner Future, and ten-month-old daughter Sienna with husband Russell Wilson – has revealed that regardless of the stresses and strains she faces in life, she believes that love can help her to overcome any problems.

She shared: "Love conquers all. Love is the most powerful force on Earth. You can’t go wrong if you put love in."

Ciara and Future were engaged in October 2013, but the celebrity couple called off their engagement amid acrimonious circumstances in August 2014.

The ‘Goodies’ hitmaker has subsequently found love again with the American football star, and Ciara has revealed that the pair own matching dog tags, which represent their roles as parents.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, she explained: "I have matching dog tags with my hubby. I got one for him for Father’s Day. It has the kids’ birth dates on it.

"I have one too, and it has the kids’ birth dates, and it’s very special to me as a mom."

In November last year, Ciara took to Instagram to share a sweet video message in honour of her husband’s 29th birthday, revealing she feels inspired by him.

In the clip, she explained: "I love you so much. I am so excited for this special day for you. It is your birthday, but I also hope you feel like every day is your birthday or at least it is my goal to love you that way. May this year be everything you hope for and more – everything that you work hard for and more, you work hard. And you inspire me.

"I am grateful for the man that you are to our house, the father that you are to our kids, the lover that you are. You inspire me to be better. You make me a better woman. I am a better woman because of you.

"You make me want to figure out ways to love in a way that I never knew I could but I sure want to try hard as heck to make you happy because you make me feel so good. I hope you feel all the love you make me feel on this special day. I love you."

Future gifted ‘$500k of bling for birthday’

Future was given $500,000 worth of bling for his birthday.

The rapper turned 34 on Monday (20.11.17) and celebrated the milestone last weekend at bar-and-restaurant The Forge in Miami, and his pal The Weeknd is said to have gifted him a Low Life pendant.

According to gossip website TMZ, the ‘Where Ya At’ hitmaker also received diamond-encrusted dog tags from his manager Ebonie Ward, and a Pluto pendant from Elliot Avianne of Avianne Jewelry in New York City, where all of his latest jewels were said to have been commissioned.

Young Scooter is said to have given his rapper pal a BMFBG piece, and the total value of the haul, including two rings gifted to him by members of his family, is reported to be around half a million dollars.

Earlier this week, Future’s former partner Ciara – who he has three-year-old son Future Zahir with – and her husband Russell Wilson visited Seattle Children’s Hospital.

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his wife headed to the medical facility to visit two fans, Isaac and Logan, who were due to spend Thanksgiving (23.11.17) in hospital.

The couple sang a "transplant song" to Isaac, to the tune of ‘Happy Birthday To You’.

She wrote on Instagram: "BIG DAY! HAPPY TRANSPLANT DAY ISAAC!!! Praying For You Angel @DangeRussWilson @SeattleChildrens (sic)"

Future and Ciara previously got engaged in October 2013 but called it off in August 2014, three months after their son was born.

Ciara and Russell – who have a six-month-old daughter Sienna – tied the knot in July 2016 in Cheshire, England, just four months after he popped the question.

Ciara agrees joint custody of son

Ciara and her ex-fiancé Future have agreed joint custody of their son.

The ‘I Bet’ hitmaker – who was left heartbroken in 2015 when she called off her one-year engagement with the rapper just weeks after the birth of their child – has been locked in a bitter legal battle with the hunk for almost two years but has now decided to bury the hatchet by accepting equal ownership of two-year-old Future Jr., according to TMZ.

Despite the former couple’s decision, the 31-year-old singer will spend the majority of the time with the youngster due to the ‘I Won’ hitmaker’s busy tour schedule.

The singer decided to put an end to the on-going court battle because she wants to get on with her life now that she’s expecting a baby with her husband Russell Wilson.

The case conclusion comes weeks after the brunette beauty decided to drop her $15 million defamation lawsuit against Future after he went on a number of foul-mouthed rants about her online and took a swipe at her and her new spouse in interviews.

Future – whose real name is Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn – previously lashed out at his former flame on social media by claiming she had denied him access to their son.

He wrote: "This bitch got control problems… I gotta go through lawyers to see babyfuture…the f**kery for 15k a month. (sic)."

However, Ciara was said to believe Future – who has four children with four different women – took aim at her in order to get publicity and was just annoyed that she has moved on with Russell, who she married last year in a romantic ceremony in the UK.

Now that her legal woes are behind her, Ciara can now focus on her relationship with the 28-year-old soccer player and look forward to their new addition later this year.

Ciara chooses baby name

Ciara and Russell Wilson have chosen their baby name.

The 31-year-old singer – who already has son Future, two, with ex-fiance Future – revealed last month she and her NFL player husband are having a child together, and she has now admitted they know whether they’re expecting a boy or a girl, but she doesn’t want to tell anyone.

She said: "I do know [if it’s a boy or a girl]. I’m not telling, not yet, but I’m very excited."

Asked if they’ve chosen a name, she added: "We’ve already done that actually."

And the ‘Goodies’ singer and Russell, 27, aren’t the only ones excited about the new addition to their family as little Future "can’t wait" to be a big brother.

Ciara told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: "He rubs my belly and he says, ‘Hi baby. I love you, baby,’ … and then he puts my shirt down and says, ‘Bye, bye baby.’ So, that’s his own thing.

"He sees a baby walking, smaller than him and walking — it doesn’t matter, it’s a baby. So, he goes, ‘baby’ and he looks at me and he goes, ‘Mama, baby’ – and he tries to pull my sweatshirt up."

After struggling with feeling nauseous in the first few months of her pregnancy, Ciara is thankful to be feeling "really good" now.

Debuting her bump for the first time at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (11.20.16), she said: "I’m feeling really good, the first few months were a bit tough for me.

"Well, not tough, but a bit more like, I didn’t throw up last time and this time I haven’t thrown up but I’ve had that in between feeling where I don’t wanna throw up, I can’t throw up but I’m not normal and that’s even more torture.

"I’m like can we find the rhythm here? What do I eat, what do I drink?

"I’m now in that place where I’m not feeling that feeling and I’m not that tired so it’s good."

Ciara announces pregnancy

Ciara is pregnant.

The ‘Love Sex Magic’ hitmaker and her husband Russell Wilson have announced they are expecting their first child together as they both took to Instagram on Tuesday (10.25.16) – Ciara’s 31st birthday – to share the news with their followers.

Alongside a picture of the couple cuddled up together, the ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love’ singer wrote: "On this special Birthday I received an abundance of love from friends and family.. and I’m excited to Finally share one of the Greatest Gifts of All that God could give… (sic)"

The caption was finished with a series of emojis, including a baby and a bottle of milk.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old NFL star shared the same picture on his Instagram and wrote: "The Greatest Blessing of All. Forever Grateful. #BabyWilsonOnTheWay (sic)"

Whilst the baby is Russell’s first, Ciara is already mother to two-year-old Future Zahir, whom she co-parents with former beau and rapper Future.

And the ‘Goodies’ musician doesn’t need to worry about shedding any post-baby weight either, as she previously admitted she managed to drop the 60 pounds she put on whilst carrying Future Zahir.

She said: "After delivering my son, a 9-lb. 10-oz. baby, and gaining 60 lbs., I was committed to [returning] to how I felt before I had him. Four months after having him, I was back to my original shape. There’s something very empowering about that. Something about that gave me an extra pep in my step, and motivated me even more to go harder."

Although Russell doesn’t have any children of his own yet, he’s had practice for the upcoming bundle of joy now that he’s a stepfather to Future Zahir.

He said previously: "[Ciara] has a little man, he’s awesome and cute as can be, he’s a special kid. I’m a stepdad now. When I see this kid, he’s 2-years-old, he’s so sweet and loving, always has a smile on his face. Being a stepfather, it’s about loving the child because the child can do something amazing in his life."
