Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Hands-on: Hitting a foldable design plateau

What’s most surprising about Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 is that it’s already in its 4th-gen version. As someone who spent a lot of time with the first and second-gen Z Fold, it’s fascinating to see how far Samsung has taken its foldable display technology design in a short period of time.

But if you were expecting a Galaxy Fold 2 or, arguably, even a Fold 3-like design leap with the Fold 4, you will be disappointed with Samsung’s latest flagship foldable.

With that in mind, it appears the South Korean tech giant’s foldable has hit a design plateau — at least to some extent. The overall look of the Fold 4 is nearly identical to the Fold 3, including its sleek matte rear and triple-rear vertically-oriented camera bump.

As expected, the device still unfolds like a book, giving you a 7.6-inch QXGA+ AMOLED inner display when unfolded and a more standard smartphone-like 6.2-inch HD+ secondary screen when folded. Both screens also still feature a 120Hz refresh rate and, overall, look stunning.

This year, the Z Fold 4’s hinge is slightly thinner than its predecessor, coming in at 15.8mm vs 16mm with the Fold 3. In practice, the 3mm really doesn’t make the phone feel any different in your hand when it’s not folded. The Fold 4 is a very thicc smartphone when folded.

It would have been great if Samsung found a way to push the Fold 4’s design forward in a meaningful way and make the device feel more like a standard handset when it’s not unfolded. On the other hand, the display’s glass feels great and more like a traditional smartphone screen, just like the Fold 3.

Other notable changes include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and a revamped main shooter with increased megapixels. The Fold 4’s primary camera now comes in at 50-megapixels f/1.8, while the ultra-wide hits 12-megapixels f/2.2 and the telephoto (3x optical zoom) comes in at 10-megapixels f/2.4, just like last year.

The primary sensor now comes in at 50-megapixels f/1.8, with the ultra-wide hitting 12-megapixels f/2.2 and the telephoto (3x optical zoom) coming in at 10-megapixels f/2.4.

Galaxy Fold 4 front camera

The under-display inner camera is identical to last year at 4-megapixels f/2.8 and blends in slightly better with the smartphone’s display. Finally, the cover camera is still 10-megapixels f/2.2.

In theory, the 50-megapixel shooter should offer improved low-light performance and images that better retain quality when blown up. In my very brief tests, the camera performed well, even under low-light conditions, and is a notable step above the Fold and Fold 2’s shooter, though the photos seem very similar to the quality of the Fold 3’s primary lens.

It’s also worth noting that Samsung has stuck with the same 4-megapixel f/1.8 under-display camera this year. The Fold 4 seems to take adequate selfies that are a cut above what we saw last year with the Fold 3, but I can’t help but wish Samsung would stick with the hole-punch shooter design it features in other devices since it still allows for an overall higher quality camera.

I appreciate the company’s efforts to experiment with under-display camera tech, but given the lens is still obviously visible despite Samsung’s claims (especially with darker content), an ‘Infinity-O’ shooter would have been preferable. The 10-megapixel cover camera also remains identical at 10-megapixels f/2.2.

Unfortunately, the Fold 4 doesn’t feature a Note-like in-device storage slot for the S Pen like some rumours indicated it would. The stylus is sold separately, and the only way to store the stylus is with a specific case that Samsung sells, just like the Fold 3.

Given that the Fold 4 is such an expensive smartphone, it would have been great if Samsung offered the S Pen as a pack-in alongside the device, especially since the Note series remains dead.

At this point, the foldable smartphone concept is established, and as far as the clamshell vs book-like argument, I’ve always preferred the latter. The design has a real utility since it allows you to carry around a tablet in your pocket. Despite how cute and cool the Flip series is, it just can’t compete in this respect.

Still, at this price, the Fold series remains far from accessible to most smartphone buyers.

Samsung finally confirms August 10th ‘Unpacked’ event

Samsung rumoured to launch Galaxy Fold 4, Flip 4 and Watch 5 on August 10

It looks like Samsung’s foldable Galaxy devices are launching in August again. According to the not-always-but-mostly-reliable Jon Prosser, the Galaxy Fold 4, Flip 4 and Watch 5 series will launch on August 10th.

The leaker says that the Unpacked event will happen on August 10th, and that the South Korean company plans to unveil to the Galaxy S22 in lavender, the Fold 4, the Flip 4, the Watch 5 Pro (46mm), Watch 5 (40mm) and the Watch 5 (44mm).

Prosser also says that the smartphones and smartwatches will release on August 26th.

The Watch 5 series will reportedly ditch the Classic variant, which means we might be losing out on the physical rotating bezel that we’re accustomed to.

Additionally, the Fold 4’s and Flip 4’s specs have leaked online, suggesting that the Fold 4 will offer more premium hardware than Samsung’s other foldable.

The Flip 4, on the other hand, will sport the top-of-the-line Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC.

We’re expecting to learn more about these upcoming devices in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 rumoured to sport 1TB of storage

It looks like Samsung’s Fold 4 is getting a storage bump this year.

Though the foldable smartphone’s release is still a few months out, SamMobile has learned that there will be one variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that will sport 1TB of internal storage. This is a substantial storage jump as the Fold 3 topped out at 512GB of storage.

Now that Samsung has ditched the Note series, it seems that more devices will offer the 1TB internal storage variant. For example, Samsung’s S22 Ultra also featured 1TB variant.

SamMobile believes that Samsung will also offer the Fold 4 in 256GB and 512GB variants, similar to the Fold 3.

1TB of storage will undoubtedly cost a lot, but this will be one of the only choices for those who want more storage as the Fold 4 will likely lack a microSD card slot. That said, you can always upload your photos, videos and more to the cloud.

Samsung will likely launch the Galaxy Fold 4 at an Unpacked event sometime this August or September.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 unofficial renders showcase Fold 3 and S22 design cues

Unofficial renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 offer a better picture of what to expect in the coming months.

The renders were published by SmartPrix, based on information from the ever-reliable Steve Hemmerstoffer (Onleaks).

The renders show that the phone looks very similar to the Fold 3 from the front, and sports a camera array inspired by the Galaxy S22 that launched earlier this year. This camera setup will contain three lenses that protrude from the rear and an LED flash.

The handset will flaunt a 6.2-inch cover display, and a larger 7.6-inch tablet-like screen when unfolded. The leak indicates that we’ll again see a high refresh rate on the displays and an improved under-display camera.

Dimension-wise, the device measures 155 x 130 x 7.1mm compared to the Fold 3, which featured dimensions of 158.2 x 128.1 x 6.4mm. This means the phone isn’t as tall, but is slightly wider and will have a noticeable thickness to it.

Despite the increased thickness, Ice Universe says that the Fold 3 is “very light.” And now that the foldable is slightly wider, the Cover display is almost the same width as the iPhone 13 mini.

Theres still no sign of a built-in slot for the S-Pen stylus. Smartprix says there’s also a very small change to the hinge that makes it a bit better.

It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil the Fold 4, but we’re expecting to see it in August or September this year, alongside a couple of other foldable devices.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 rumoured to feature 108-megapixel camera

Samsung looks to be planning a significant camera upgrade for its upcoming Galaxy Fold 4, according to the tipster Dohyun Kim.

The phone will sport a 108-megapixel shooter similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra and other Galaxy S20 variants. Another tipster, @chunvn8888, has also corroborated Kim’s leak.

The foldable handset will reportedly sport a 108-megapixel primary shooter, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide shooter, but might lack a 10x optical zoom periscope lens. While this camera upgrade is notable, dismissing the 10x optical zoom lens seems like a misstep on Samsung’s part since it’s so useful with the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Last year’s Fold 3 hosted three 12-megapixel rear cameras, so this would be a significant camera array improvement on Samsung’s part.

Recent rumours have also indicated that the Galaxy Fold 4 will lack a built-in S Pen and that the phone will likely launch sometime in August.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 will reportedly not include built-in S Pen

Months away from its launch, rumours surrounding whether Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 will feature an S Pen are already circulating.

According to the well-known Samsung tipster, Ice Universe, the Fold 4 will not sport a built-in S Pen. Instead, the device is tipped to be slightly smaller and thinner than last year’s model because “no one likes a brick.” While it’s true that no one likes a brick-like smartphone,  rumours regarding the device featuring S Pen support have been swirling for the last few months.

That said, we recently reported a rumour regarding the S Pen entering production, though that doesn’t necessarily confirm that the Galaxy Fold 4 will feature a built-in storage slot.

As someone who uses the Galaxy Fold 3 as their main Android device, I’d prefer a foldable handset that’s smaller/thinner and that doesn’t come with the S Pen. In my review of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I noted that the S Pen wasn’t worth the extra cost, and I imagine I’ll hold the same opinion when the Fold 4 is revealed.

As always, approach these rumours with an air of skepticism, but I hope Ice Universe is right about this one.

Samsung S Pen now in mass production in several countries

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 is rumoured to be the first foldable with a dedicated S Pen holster. This leak seems more credible with the S Pen now in mass production in several Eurasian countries.

However, it’s unclear if this is a new S Pen that is compatible with other Samsung devices. The Fold 3 only supports the S Pen Fold Edition and the S Pen Pro. This S Pen features different frequencies that make it compatible with the Fold 3. Additionally, using the S Pen on other devices can potentially damage the foldable screen.

However, with news of Samsung developing a new type of Ultra-Thin Glass, the screen might be strong enough to work with other S Pens like the one available with the S22 Ultra.

The Fold 4 might launch sometime in August.
