Samsung’s self-repair program debuts to Galaxy device owners

Samsung is allowing Galaxy S20, S21 and Galaxy Tab S7+ device owners to make their own repairs.

The technology giant is collaborating with iFixit to deliver the program. Noted for being a leader in the online repair community, customers wanting to make their own repairs can buy device parts on iFixit. Samsung 837 and Samsung retail locations will also offer genuine device parts.

Users can replace their phone screen, back glass, and charging ports. Customers can also view repair guides for free online.

The program builds on the company’s plan to expand “convenient repairs” and extend the lifespan of devices.

“Samsung is continually offering more convenient options for consumers to extend the use of their devices, promote a circular economy, and minimize e-waste,” Mark Williams, vice-president of customer care at Samsung Electronics America, said.

“Samsung Self-Repair is another way for customers to prolong the life of their devices, before they are recycled.”

The company will be offering return labels to allow consumers to return unwanted parts back to Samsung at no extra cost. Samsung says it will expand the program to include more devices and repair options. However, it’s important to note the program is not available in Canada at this time.

Samsung is not the first company to offer such a program. Back in November, Apple launched its own DIY repair program for iPhone and Mac.

Samsung offers several other options to help Galaxy smartphone owners extend the lifespan of their devices.

In-person, Same Day Service allows U.S. residents to access thousands of locations for device repair, with wait times mostly lasting less than two hours. Furthermore, their ‘We Come To You Service’ allows customers to get their device repaired by a mobile team member.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 will reportedly feature 200-megapixel sensor

Samsung is reportedly done working on the 200-megapixel camera for 2023’s Galaxy S23.

According to ETNews, the company is in the process of selecting suppliers for its new 200-megapixel sensor. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will get 70 percent of the orders, while Samsung Electronics and other partners will recieve the remaining 30 percent of orders.

This new sensor is called the ‘ISOCELL HP3’ and is an upgraded version of the current 200-megapixel camera called the ISOCELL HP1. For whatever reason, the HP1 wasn’t included in Samsung’s devices. This sensor can record 8K and 4K videos and offers advanced HDR and Double Super Phase Detection autofocus.

We’ll liekly see the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP3 alongside the S23 (Ultra) in early 2023.

Samsung S22 camera features are coming to these older devices

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 series it hosted a slew of exclusive camera features, including advanced portrait mode with pet recognition, portrait in night mode, telephoto lens support for portrait videos and more.

In March, Samsung shared a list of devices that would get some of the S22’s new camera features through an upcoming software update. Now, XDA Developers says that the software has started rolling out to older devices, including the S21 series. It’s worth noting that this update is only making its way to South Korean S21 devices so far, but I expect to see it on other devices in Canada sometime shortly.

Through Samsung’s South Korean Community forum, we’ve learned what camera features are coming to Samsung’s handsets.

Samsung’s improved night portraits feature will hit the Galaxy S21, Z Fold 3, S20, Note 20 and Z Fold 2. Additionally, improved auto framing in video mode that provides automatic zoom, is supported on the Galaxy S21, Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, S21 FE, Z Fold 2 and Z Flip 5G.

Improved video call support for Google Duo, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and more will be available on the S21, Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, S21 FE, S20 , Note 20, Z Fold 2, Z Flip 5G, S20 FE, S10, Note 10, Z Fold, 10 Lite and Note 10 Lite.

The support for auto framing effects for video calls is coming to the S21, Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, S21 FE, Z Fold 2, and Z Flip 5G.

Better third-party camera app quality for photos taken with social and camera apps downloaded from the Play Store will also be applied with Samsung Camera’s image quality optimization technology. This will come to the S21, Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 and S21 FE.

It’s unclear when these devices will hit everyone’s phones, but this offers a better idea of what we’ll see next.

Canadian Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 Android 12 update hits January 18, S21 series December update rolling out now

If you’re using a Samsung Galaxy S21 series device, you should finally be receiving the smartphone’s December security update. According to Rogers’ and Telus’ update schedule, the update went out yesterday, January 11th.

Even if you’re not with Telus or Rogers, as long as your device is Canadian, it likely means you’ll be getting the update very soon.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, Note 20, Note 20 Ultra, A52 5G and the S20 series will get the Android 12 update on January 18th, according to the Rogers and Telus update schedules.

I received the Z Fold 3 Android 12 update on January 5th. After looking into it more, the Z Fold 3 model I was given to review by Samsung Canada is American — that’s why I received the patch.

At the time, MobileSyrup reached out to Samsung Canada for further information but, unfortunately, didn’t receive an update from the company.

One UI 4.0 adds new theming options, a refreshed keyboard and new privacy settings. Further, more emojis, GIFs and stickers are available directly from your keyboard, and new home screen icons, menus, buttons, and backgrounds.

Samsung says that it’s also adding new privacy and security features to its devices with One UI 4.0. For example, you’ll be notified when an app attempts to access your camera or microphones.

If you purchase Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 FE, the phone will sport Android 12/One UI 4.0 pre-loaded.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series will reportedly offer similar selfie camera

Expect similar selfie camera shots from Samsung’s rumoured Galaxy S22 series.

According to a leak from the Netherlands-based publication, GalaxyClub, Samsung is expected to feature the same 10-megapixel selfie sensor specs in its S22 and S22+ as it does in the S21 and S21+.

This is the fourth year in a row that Samsung’s S Series flagship has featured this sized sensor, going back as far as the S10. That said, the S22 Ultra will include a 40-megapixel selfie sensor, though this is still the same as both the S21 Ultra and S20 Ultra.

GalaxyClub didn’t provide any other information about the S22’s selfie camera, so there’s a possibility it could feature upgrades beyond its sensor size.

Based on recent leaks, Samsung’s S22 series is starting to look like another minor update to the S Series similar to the S21 lineup. With that in mind, last week rumours leaked regarding the S22 Ultra’s ability to dock the S Pen stylus, so at least one of the devices in the series could feature notable upgrades.

Samsung Galaxy One UI 4.0 beta is rolling out in the U.S. with tons of new features

Samsung’s One UI 4.0 beta has rolled out in the U.S, but unfortunately, Canadians have once again been left out.

The beta is available for Samsung Galaxy S21 series smartphones only and runs on top of Android 12 with ‘Material You.’ Google’s Material You allows your smartphone’s wallpaper to match its background theme. It’s unclear when Samsung plans to bring the update to its other devices.

Other One UI 4.0 updates include the ability to add two emojis together and create a new animation, customizing the list of apps to share when you’re sharing photos, an ‘extra dim’ accessibility feature, a lock screen widget for voice recording, the ability to set the always-on display to turn on whenever you get a notification, and more.

There are even new Bixby features… yay.

You can check out the list of all 60 new features in SamMobile’s video round-up available below.

it looks like Samsung finally stopped showing ads in its Galaxy phone apps

Samsung promised to stop showing ads on its One UI apps in the summer and, surprisingly, the company actually followed through.

According to reports from both The Verge and 9to5Google, ads no longer show up in the Samsung Weather, Pay or Health apps. I asked MobileSyrup’s resident Samsung user, Dean Daley, about the status of ads on his Samsung phone, but he said he never really saw them to begin with.

It’s great to see Samsung go through with the change. Ads in pre-installed apps were particularly frustrating, especially on Samsung’s most expensive, premium flagship phone. The company received a lot of flack for doing it.

If you’ve got a Samsung phone, it’s worth noting you may have to force-close an app to get it to stop showing ads.

Although Samsung has received the most flack, it’s not the only company that displays ads in software on its devices. For example, Apple regularly advertises its own services in the Settings app, although people seem less bothered by that.

Either way, no apps in Samsung apps is a win.

Samsung Galaxy S21 users can sign up for Android 12 beta in U.S.

Samsung has officially announced that it’s rolling out the public beta of Android 12 with One UI 4.0 for Galaxy S21 handsets. This is only a few weeks before the expected final release of the operating system for Google’s Pixel smartphones.

The registration process starts today, September 14th. Users need to register via the Samsung Members app, and there are likely only a certain number of open slots. Currently, the beta is only available in U.S. and likely won’t come to Canada until the official release.

While One UI 4.0 runs on top of Android 12, at least at the outset, Samsung’s UI seems to be a lot cleaner and more elegant than ‘Material You.’

Samsung says One UI 4.0 features deep customization, ranging from visibility to appearance. Additionally, One UI 4.0 will also bring more enhanced privacy and protection functions, including indicator alerts when an app’s camera or microphone is in use.
