Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is this year’s top-tier S series device. First off, the device looks like a fusion of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra — a perfect combination of the two smartphones. The handset features up to 1TB of memory, up to 12GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.

What’s most notable about the Galaxy S22 Ultra is it includes the fan-favourite S Pen. This new S Pen supports 2.8ms latency, which should make it feel very smooth. Additionally, the S Pen features a more advanced version of handwriting that can digitize your messy handwriting into easy-to-read notes, and it works with up to 88 languages.

Further, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 6.8-inch display that offers a 1440 x 3080-pixel resolution and 120Hz variable refresh rate that can reduce to 1Hz when looking at static images. Additionally, it supports a 240Hz touch sample rate when gaming. A touch sample rate or touch-sensing refers to the frequency at which the smartphone tracks the movement of your finger. Typical devices have a 60Hz touch sample rate, which tracks the screen every 16.6ms, while, for example, the iPhone 13 series features a 120Hz touch sample rate that cuts the time by half.

The 240Hz reduces this to 4.15ms, which should make it seem like the handset reacts instantly to each touch.

Camera-wise, the S22 Ultra sports a 108-megapixel primary shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, a 10-megapixel telephoto shooter with 10x optical zoom with an f/4.9 aperture, another 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom with an f/2.4 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter with a 120-degree field-of-view, and lastly, a 40-megapixel selfie shooter with an f/2.2 aperture.

The S22 Ultra’s low-light videography and photography have improved thanks to pixels that are 1.23x bigger than the S21 Ultra’s, allowing the camera to capture more light, according to Samsung. The bigger pixels combined with the company’s multi-frame exposure technology should allow the S22 Ultra to capture bright high-resolution images even in low-light. Alongside this technology, the company’s AI reportedly processes 4x more data to sharpen details and reduce noise in low-light images.

There’s also a new auto-framing feature for videography that can detect people within five meters and track up to ten people for better group shots. When you tap a specific person’s face the video automatically shifts and adjusts to keep the subject in the centre.

Samsung says it has upgraded its ‘Portrait mode’ by improving its AI Stereo Depth Map and making depth photos pop in a more natural way. There’s also better studio lighting that should improve selfies, and portrait photos now work at night.

Additionally, Samsung has improved its manual photo-taking mode, allowing users to export 16-bit raw images. Finally, the handset sports a 5,000mAh battery and 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy S22 /S22+

In a sense, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and S22+ are in a different ballpark than the S22 Ultra. Both phones look similar to last year’s S21 and S21+ and lack the S22 Ultra’s S Pen stylus.

The S22 features a 6.1-inch FHD+ display, whereas the S22+ offers an S22+ FHD+ panel. Both devices sport a 120Hz refresh rate with a 240Hz touch sample rate when gaming.

Both phones only sport 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Additionally, the devices offer Android 12 and One UI 4.1, 5G, LTRE and Wi-Fi 6E for the Galaxy S22+ and the Wi-Fi 6 for the Galaxy S22.

Additionally, the handset sports a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. There’s also a 50-megapixel primary shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, a 10-megapixel telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom and f/2.4 aperture, and lastly, a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

The S22 sports a 3,700mAh battery, 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. On the other hand, the S22+ features a 4,500mAh power cell with 45W wired charging like the S22 Ultra and 15W wireless charging.

How to watch Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event

Samsung is ready to reveal its latest S series flagship devices at its Unpacked event on February 9th at 10am ET/7am PT.

The event comes almost four months after Samsung held its ‘Unpacked 2‘ stream to showcase the Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition and One UI 4.

From what we know so far, Samsung is expected to unveil its latest S Series flagship devices, which include the S22, s22+ and S22 Ultra, along with the Tab S8 series, which includes the Tab S8, Tab S8+ and the Tab S8 Ultra.

Samsung dropped the Galaxy Note line last year, and it’s unlikely we’ll see it back this year. Consequently, Samsung’s top-tier flagship, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, is likely to include a Note-like design, an S-Pen, and top-of-the line specifications, while the other S22 and S22+ are expected to sport a design similar to its predecessors.

The company can also come out with a limited-edition Z Fold 3 or Z Flip 3, or updates for its latest Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, though we haven’t heard of any rumours surrounding those products.

Whatever might be the case, you can follow along with MobileSyrup’s coverage of the event on our homepage as well as on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or check the showcase out for yourself on Samsung’s YouTube page, Samsung’s website or from the stream embedded below at 10am ET/7am PT.

Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ rumoured to be delayed until March 11

Samsung might be going through another supply chain issue, according to a well-known leaker with a mixed track record, Jon Prosser.

According to Prosser, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ won’t hit stores until March 11th, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra being the only device landing in stores on February 25th.

Prosser indicates that supply chain issues are the cause of the setbacks. This isn’t the first time that supply chain issues have caused concerns for Samsung.

Previous rumours indicate that the Galaxy S21 FE was poised to launch in August, but due to supply chain issues, the device didn’t release until January.

Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S22 series on February 9th.

Samsung’s latest S22 series will reportedly release in these four colours

We already know quite a bit about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup through leaks, including the fact that the S22 Ultra will likely feature less RAM than its predecessor.

However, leakers have been relatively quiet about the device’s colours — at least until now. Often-reliable leaker Evan Blass has shared several reported press renders that show the S22 series in its full glory.

Check out the images below:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will reportedly be available in the same ‘Black,’ ‘Dark/Olive Green,’ ‘Pink’ and ‘White’ colourways, while the larger S22 Ultra will offer the same shades and a darker pink variant.

From what we know so far, the Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and work with an S Pen. The other S22 models reportedly lack the S Pen support, sport an S21-like design with three cameras and feature the same Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra.

While Samsung hasn’t officially announced a reveal date for the S22 series, previous leaks have indicated that we might get our first look at the device at Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 8th or 9th.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will likely feature less RAM than its predecessor

Leaked European pricing for Samsung’s still-unannounced Galaxy S22 series courtesy of Roland Quandt (via Android Police), indicates that the S22 Ultra will cost as much as its predecessor despite featuring less RAM.

Quandt says that the S22 will start at 849€ (about $1,219.53), the S22+ will cost 1,049€ (approximately $1,506 CAD) and the S22 ultra will cost 1,249€ (roughly $1,794 CAD). For context, at launch in Canada, the S21 started at $1,129 CAD, the s21+ cost $1,469 CAD and the S21 Ultra cost $1,649 CAD.

Though the S21’s launch pricing is slightly less expensive than the converted Canadian pricing for the rumoured S22 series, the cost will likely be in this range (or at least, within $100 or so).

The interesting thing here is that Quandt’s leaked pricing mentions that the S22 Ultra will feature 8GB RAM instead of 12GB RAM like with the base-level S21 Ultra, but at a very similar price point.

Quandt’s tweet indicates that Samsung will still sell a 12GB RAM variant of the S22 Ultra with 256GB and 512GB of storage at 1,349€ (about $1,936 CAD) and 1,449€ (roughly $2,080 CAD), respectively. Last year, Samsung offered 16GB RAM in its 512GB version of the S21 Ultra, which started at $1,889 CAD.

Rumours indicate Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and compatibility with its S Pen stylus. The other S22 models reportedly lack the S Pen support, sport an S21-like design with three cameras and feature the same Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra.

Samsung is expected to reveal its Galaxy S22 series officially during an upcoming February’ Unpacked’ event.

Samsung teases “noteworthy” Galaxy S series device announcement next month

Samsung’s next Unpacked event will take place in February 2022. The company didn’t share exactly when in February (rumours point to the 8th) but it did tease the reveal of what will likely be called the Galaxy S22 series, including the “most noteworthy S series device.”

The line comes straight from Samsung president Dr. TM Roh’s new blog post. Roh details several innovations from past Samsung phones — including several mentions of Galaxy Note features — before rolling out the tease.

“At Unpacked in February 2022, we’ll introduce you to the most noteworthy S series device we’ve ever created. The next generation of Galaxy S is here, bringing together the greatest experiences of our Samsung Galaxy into one ultimate device,” Roh writes.

He goes on to note a few things about the phone, writing that owners will “own the night” by taking the “best and brightest photos and videos” ever captured with a phone. Moreover, Roh wrote that the upcoming Galaxy S device will offer “power, speed and tools that can’t be found elsewhere” and “cutting edge-innovations” thanks to the “smartest Galaxy experience yet.”

For Note fans, Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event will certainly be one to watch. Samsung’s Galaxy Note phones had a dedicated fanbase and many were sad to see the line go away last year.

Rumours have long suggested Samsung would eventually turn its Galaxy S Ultra device into a Note replacement. The S21 Ultra came close, offering the best specs available in a Samsung phone and even S Pen support (although you needed a case to actually carry an S Pen instead of storing it in the phone like the Note series). Maybe that will all change in February.

Finally, Samsung will open reservations for the upcoming Galaxy S series and/or its upcoming tablet. Those who reserve will also get a $50 Samsung credit toward other Galaxy products during pre-order. Engadget reports that the reservations will open January 21st at 10am ET, but they already appear to be open for U.S. customers at the time of writing (stay tuned for an update if and when Samsung Canada opens reservations).

Samsung might unveil the Galaxy S22 series on February 8

Samsung could launch its upcoming Galaxy S22 series at an Unpacked event on February 8th, according to South Korea’s Digital Daily.

A Samsung representation reportedly told the publication that “we have confirmed that the event will be held on February 8, and we are discussing the timing of invitations to be sent out at the end of January.”

In Canada, the S22 series will likely sport the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, feature have up to 12GB of RAM, and offer a substantial battery. The S22 Ultra will reportedly feature four cameras, with a top-of-the-line 108-megapixel primary shooter and what Samsung calls a “Super Clear Lens,” which is rumoured to improve low-light videos.

Additionally, the S22 Ultra will work with the company’s S Pen stylus and sport a design that looks like a combination of Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra.

Samsung hasn’t officially announced the S22 event, but if the rumour above is correct the smartphone series will likely be formally revealed during roughly the same time frame as MWC 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Samsung Galaxy S22 dummy video makes its rounds

Canada’s own Unbox Therapy has leaked a video showcasing Samsung’s upcoming S series flagships, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, S22+ and S22.

While the video has been delisted from YouTube, other channels have reuploaded it and screenshots have emerged, giving us a detailed look at the South Korean company’s upcoming devices.

While not entirely new given we’ve dummy units of the S22 series in the past, Unbox Therapy’s videos corroborate those designs.

The standard Galaxy S22 and S22+ both look like last year’s S21 devices with camera bumps in the top left corner or the rear of the smartphone. On the other hand, the S22 Ultra looks like a combination of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra.

Alongside the leaked video, a spec sheet has also appeared.

The leaked specs indicate that the regular S21 sports a 6.1-inch display, the plus model will offer a 6.55-inch screen and that the Ultra features a 6.8-inch screen.

While the leaked specs are likely accurate, it’s odd the S21 Ultra offers 8GB/12GB of RAM when the S21 Ultra featured 12GB/16GB of RAM, making the Ultra seem like a bit of a downgrade in a sense.

The spec sheet also states that the 108-megapixel sensor features some sort of “Super Clear Glass,” which is theorized to reduce the small bright dots that sometimes appears when taking videos at night.

WinFuture’s Roland Quandt previously shared an image of a 45W charger for the S22 Ultra, which suggests that Samsung is bringing back the Note 10+’s higher charging speeds.

It’s unclear when Samsung will launch these new S22 smartphones. It’s possible that we’ll see Samsung unveil the Galaxy S22 series as late as February at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

Samsung Galaxy S22 series live images showcases rear of devices

With Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series only rumoured to be a month or two away from release, it makes sense that we’d start seeing leaked live images of the rumoured flagship smartphone line. This most recent leak showcases the rear of the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra.

The South Korean company’s trio of smartphones comes in various shapes and sizes, so let’s dive in and unpack the leaked images.

The S22, the smallest of the three devices, seems to sport a glossy rear, three cameras and a small form factor. Its camera array looks like it’s constructed of different materials and that is possibly features a more S21-like bump.

Next up, the S22+ also features a glossy back and a similar form factor. Further camera setup seems like it doesn’t protrude very far from the rear of the smartphone.

Lastly, is the S22 Ultra — or what some are calling the S22 Note — offers a very rectangular body and what looks like five camera sensors. The rear is also matte, which is different than the other two models in the S22 lineup.

Past leaks indicate that Ultra will sport a next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and more.

The S22 series will likely be revealed in January or February 2022.
