Samsung S23 series might cost $100 more than predecessor

Samsung’s flagship smartphones might be pricier this year.

Galaxy S23 series pricing information obtained by 9to5Google suggests the phone will cost $100 more than the S22 line. 9to5 specifically cites Australian pricing information, where the S23 (128GB model) is said to cost $1,350 AUD, compared to last year’s $1,249 AUD price.

The publication also details the entire S23 series’ cost, with a $100 increase across each model compared to last year. The S23+ will start at $1,650 AUD and the S23 Ultra at $1,950 AUD.

With conversion, this means the Galaxy S23 could cost roughly $1,262 CAD, the S23+ about $1,543 and the S23 Ultra approximately $1,824. This is a significant price increase in the Canadian market, as the S22 started at $1,099. While we’ll see a price increase in Canada with the S23, it’s unlikely the smartphone will cost that much more here (my guess is the S23 will cost roughly $1,199 CAD).

That said, in the past, Samsung has added what seems like a Canadian premium cost, with devices being more expensive in Canada when compared to other regions, even after conversion. With this in mind, it’s still possible we’ll see a 128GB S23 that costs more than $1,200 CAD.

Samsung previously offered the 256GB S22 at the same price as the 128GB S22, so I’d definitely keep an eye out for launch deals.

It’s worth pointing out these are just rumours and that it’s still unclear how much the smartphone will actually cost. Samsung will officially reveal the S23’s Canadian pricing and availability on February 1st.

Samsung to reportedly focus on competing with Apple in 2023

Samsung is trying to compete better against Apple, according to reports from South Korean news outlet Hankyung (via SamMobile).

The South Korean company’s vice chairman Han Jong-hee reportedly told the company to come up with ways to better compete without reducing costs. “Think about ways to strengthen the competitiveness of smartphones without getting caught up in cost reduction,” said Jong-hee.

The chairman also explained that “cost reduction is something that even latecomers like Chinese companies can do without difficulty.” Instead, Samsung departments should focus on being more competitive rather than spend time and resources on developing cost-reduction strategies, instructed Jong-Hee.

Samsung has been working on A series smartphones for the better half of the past decade in an effort to better compete against Chinese manufacturers. However, in 2023 Samsung will focus on the flagship market and place less emphasis on its China-based rivals, which it hopes will allow it to better against Apple, says Hankyung .

As part of this strategy shift, Samsung is expected to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset for the entire Galaxy S23 series, instead of splitting between the Snapdragon and Exyos processors based on region. Further, this shift to using only Qualcomm’s chip will allow the company to focus on making its own in-house chipset for flagship smartphones in 2025, according to the report.

With this focus on competition, the Galaxy S23, Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 should be Samsung’s best smartphones in years. However, we already know that the S23 and S23+ will be very similar to the S22 series, so maybe Samsung will implement this strategy for its Galaxy S24 series instead.

Alleged Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra colours and cases details leak online

Samsung is rumoured to launch the Galaxy S23 series in early February with new camera features. Even though the phone series hasn’t been officially announced, that hasn’t stopped the well-known Roland Quandt from leaking details about the devices’ cases.

Samsung will reportedly offer a Leather Cover, Silicone Cover, Silicone Cover with Strap, Frame Cover, Clear View Cover, and a Transparent Cover for the S23 lineup. And for the first time ever on an S series device, an Aramid Cover (Kevlar). Additionally, the cases will be available in Black, Green, Camel (brown), White, Khaki, Navy, Orange, Cotton, Violet, Creme and more.

Further, it looks like the S23 Ultra’s stylus colours will come in Black, Green, Rose (light pink) and Beige, which likely represents the colour variants for the smartphone.

Quandt suggests that the Beige S23 colour variant might look similar to the Samsung EB-P3400 37Wh/1000mAh power bank that he also leaked.

As usual, these are only leaks and not an indication of exactly what will launch early next year. While Quandt leaker with a solid track record, I’d still take takes leak with a grain of salt.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series to reportedly launch in February

Samsung Electronics will reportedly introduce the Galaxy S23 series in February, according to Korea JoonAng Daily, which says it was told the news by an unnamed Samsung executive

“The S23 series will be shown during our own Unpacked event in the United States, which will be held in February,” the executive said to Korea JoonAng Daily. This timeline is very similar to previous S series releases and is likely accurate.

The source didn’t reveal the specific city or exact date, but media outlets believe it will take place in San Francisco in the first week of February.

Qualcomm said in a conference call earlier this month that the S23 lineup will be powered by its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Additionally, it’s rumoured that the  S23 cost more than the S22 and S21 series due to inflation.

The S23 Ultra is rumoured to sport a 200-megapixel camera sensor. Further, the S23 and S23+ are both expected to feature the same design and features as their predecessor. According to leaker Ice Universe, the handsets will offer the same screen, same sensor, same camera and a similar battery.

Samsung may have plans to launch new ‘Superfast’ charging

Samsung could have plans to launch new quick charging technology called ‘Superfast’ charging, according to a new trademark filing first uncovered by Sammobile.

The trademark specifically mentions ‘Samsung Superfast Portable Power,’ hinting that this technology could be tied to a portable charging accessory designed for Samsung’s smartphones and various accessories. Of course, this filing could just be related to the charger’s name and have nothing to do with some sort of new faster-charging technology.

If Samsung were to launch a new form of charging technology, it would have to be faster than its current 45W ‘Fast Charging,’ moving the South Korean tech giant’s charging speeds more in line with its Chinese rivals. For context, the fastest charging speed Apple’s iPhone supports is 20W. No information regarding the rumoured Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra’s charging speeds has appeared yet.

Galaxy S23 Ultra rumoured to sport 200-megapixel primary and similar everything else

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series is getting closer by the day, and now we’re seeing some of the phone’s specifications. Shared by well-known leaker Yogesh Brar is what we should expect to see camera-wise from the South Korean flagship.

Brar believes the phone will host a 200-megapixel primary, 10-megapixel 10x periscope telephoto, 10-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera. Besides the 200-megapixel primary, these three cameras are similar to what we’ve seen in the S22 Ultra and S21 Ultra.

According to reliable tipster Ice Universe, “The 200MP of Samsung S23 Ultra is too strong. It has unparalleled analytical power. It is stronger than all the 200MP I have seen before.”

The phone is also expected to feature the Qualcomm flagship processor (in Canada) and will launch sometime in January or February.

Samsung is reportedly working on a Wireless Charger Hub

Samsung is reportedly working on a new charging accessory called the Wireless Charger Hub. The ‘Hub’ in the name likely indicates it will be capable of wireless charging multiple devices at once.

Dutch publication GalaxyClub believes that the Wireless Charger Hub is the successor to the Wireless Charger Trio Samsung released back in 2020. This wireless charging accessory might arrive alongside the Galaxy S23 lineup next year, according to the leak.

Pricing details and specs are currently unclear, and all we know so far is the charger’s name.

We’ll have to wait to learn more about the upcoming wireless charging accessory. While charging three devices at once is cool, hopefully, it will be able to wireless fast charge multiple devices at once.

Samsung Galaxy S23 rumoured to look similar to its predecessors

Samsung’s flagship smartphones are starting to feel a little stale as they continue to feature fewer design changes with each new version. And according to a well-known leaker, 2023’s Galaxy S23 won’t bring much to the table either.

Ice Universe, a frequently reliable Samsung leaker, has tweeted information about Samsung’s upcoming flagship S23. According to the tweet, the “S23 Ultra will have increased the width of the middle frame, which means that the curved part of the glass will be reduced.” With this in mind, it seems like the S23 Ultra will feature a less curved display.

Additionally, Ice Universe also offered up information about the Galaxy S23 and S23+.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 and S23+ have mostly looked the same two years in a row, and it seems like the next S series flagship design will also offer a similar aesthetic if Ice Universe’s information is accurate.
