Latest Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 update might still brick your phone: report

A recent update has caused the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to stop working. Samsung first stopped the update from reaching more devices, but now has released a new patch that should fix the issue.

The new update, version ‘GVK4,’ comes with bug fixes and improvements, the November 2022 security patch, and a “power operation-related stabilization code.” However, unfortunately, GVK4 doesn’t seem to fix the problem, and there are more reports of dead Watch 4 devices.

It’s still unclear how widespread this problem is.

However, if this gets as bad as the previous update (GVI3), Samsung might have to pull the update once again. That said, there are some users who have downloaded the new update without any issues, but definitely download it at your own risk.

A Reddit user says that Samsung will offer a free repair or a $210 credit towards the new Galaxy Watch 5 Pro for those that encounter this problem.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 to receive Watch 5 faces as part of new plugin update

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 now supports a selection of Watch 5 faces. As part of the new v2.2.11.22081151 update, the gap between the two generations is shrinking ever so slightly.

It’s been discovered that the latest update for the Galaxy Watch 4 plugin alters the interface for the Watch manager app. As such, six Watch 5 faces are now available to select from. Samsung is making the following faces available on Watch 4: Board, Pro Analog, Digital Neon, Analog Utility, Kinetic Digits, and Flower Garden.

The addition of the Watch 5 faces is another step in Samsung’s attempt to bridge the gap between the two devices. Interestingly enough, upon the One UI Watch 4.5 update (expected during Q3 2022), Galaxy Watch 4 will gain swipe-to-type support and dual-SIM support. Additionally, Samsung is bringing new accessibility options to the forefront.

The One UI Watch 4.5 update for Galaxy Watch 4 is already being tested in select markets. However, it is not currently available in Canada.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and its Pro sister model are both available for pre-order now. Purchases begin on August 26th. Based on its Unpacked event, Samsung is bringing a handful of major changes to the Watch 5. One of the notable changes is the omission of the rotating bezel.

The Galaxy Watch 4 update has begun to roll out to users. Via the Google Play Store, users can install the update for the Galaxy Wearable app. Following the successful installation, the new Watch 5 faces can be found.

Wear OS 3 can support iOS after all

While Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 doesn’t support iOS, it looks like Wear OS 3 still works with the iPhone.

Last year the Galaxy Watch 4 came with Wear OS 3 onboard, but it lacked iPhone support, so many assumed that Wear OS 3 in turn would lack iOS support. Further, when Google announced the Pixel Watch back in May, it seemed that the smartwatch would only work with Android smartphones as well.

However, the Montblanc Summit 3, will also support iPhone despite featuring Wear OS 3, according to WareableThe Montblanc Summit 3 will go on sale in July for $1,290 USD ($1662.80 CAD).

If this is true, then the Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch 4 purposefully block iOS and it’s not due to the limitations of Wear OS 3.

Samsung rumoured to ditch ‘Classic’ brand for new Watch 5 ‘Pro’ models

Samsung will reportedly ditch its ‘Classic’ design for the still-unannounced Galaxy Watch 5.

In the years past, the South Korean company has released Classic and standard models of its Galaxy Watches, but it looks like this year there will be a Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, according to SamMobile.

At this moment it’s unclear if the Pro model will continue to sport the beloved physical rotating bezel. According to the leak, the Galaxy Watch 5 might come in two sizes, while the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro could be limited to just one size.

A previous leak indicated that the Watch 5 Pro would sport a huge 572mAh battery, which should help solve previous battery complaints. In my review of the Watch 4 Classic, I noted that I could barely get 24 hours out of the battery.

Additionally, the Watch 5 Pro is expected to sport a circular OLED display, GPS, accelerometer, gyro sensor, heart rate sensor, and a body composition sensor like the previous device.

SamMobile will run a new version of One UI Watch on top of Wear OS 3.0.

Galaxy Watch 4 update brings new gestures and customization options

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 series is getting a slew of new updates that offer gesture controls and customization options.

The first of the updates is an ‘Info Brick’ watch face that lets users add their favourite stats, including heart rate, stress and your daily activity status. There’s also a new weather forecast, basic dashboard and live wallpapers inspired by the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.

You can also choose a moving GIF for your My Photo+ watch face to create a more lively watch face. Additionally, you can add four Complications to your Animal watch face.

The update also brings more playful animations to your Step Challenge watch face to keep track of how steps. This animated bear will also stretch and cheer you on.

Further, Samsung has added new gesture controls, allowing users to rotate their wrist twice to reject calls or dismiss alarms. And finally, there’s also a new hand motion that can use as a shortcut to your favourite apps or features.

Samsung brings its web browser to the Galaxy Watch 4

When I reviewed the Galaxy Watch 4, I had a great experience with the smartwatch, but apparently, it was missing a web browser (I didn’t even notice). Now, Samsung has rectified this issue and brought its web browser to the wearable.

This feature was initially available with Samsung’s Tizen watches, but with the move to Google’s Wear OS, Samsung’s browser originally wasn’t available with the Galaxy Watch 4. As you may have already assumed, the Wear OS version of Samsung’s Internet app features a browser that lets users access webpages directly from their wrist.

When you first use the wearable browser, you’ll see a guide that shows how the app is optimized for your wrist. For example, a diagonal swipe from either side of the screen allows users to see the corners of a webpage, a swipe up reveals bookmarks, “Zoom mode,” and a shortcut to send webpages to your phone.

The browser’s opening page also shows a list of Samsung Internet bookmarks synced with your smartphone.

While having a browser on your wrist might be helpful occasionally, the app also looks a little clunky. With that in mind, I don’t think any smartwatch really needs a dedicated web browser, especially when you can just ask Bixby questions with the Galaxy Watch 4.

Samsung unveils new Watch 4 bands made from eco-friendly materials

Samsung has launched a limited-edition collection of sustainably manufactured Watch Bands for the Galaxy Watch 4 created by Sami Miró, a fashion designer whose previous projects used upcycled materials.

The new Sami Miró collection offers six watchbands and three watch faces with a focus on sustainability and wellness and usage of recycled materials, including apple peel sourced from the fruit industry.

The ‘Midnight Black’ and ‘Stratus Sky’ bands are made entirely of apple peel skin, whereas ‘Aurora Night,’ ‘Cloud Navy,’ ‘Earth Sunrise,’ and ‘Dawn Atlas’ are composed of a recyclable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), according to Samsung.

“The colors Stratus Sky, Cloud Navy, and Midnight Black can translate from day to night while the Aurora Night and Dawn Atlas have gem hues and are perfect for when you are in the mood for a pop of color,” said Miró in Samsung’s release about the new bands. “I am proud that we sourced sustainable materials for the entire collection. My designs were inspired by the beauty of our planet and I want the collection to serve as a reminder to stay mindful and connected to the Earth.”

In addition to the bands, Miró has also designed three watch faces for the Watch 4 (SMV Atlas I, SMV Serenity and SMV Atlas II), which are free to download from Google Play Store.

The Galaxy Watch4 x Sami Miró Vintage sustainable watchband collection is now available on Samsung.com, with prices beginning at $39.99 ($50.51 CAD). However, the bands don’t appear on Samsung’s Canadian website.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Samsung for more information regarding Canadian availability and pricing.
