Galaxy Z Flip 5 renders show ‘tabbed’ outer screen

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 was rumoured to have a ‘tabbed’ external display — new renders give us a better idea of how this tabbed display will look.

The renders come from a partnership between leaker @OnLeaks and MediaPeanut and show off outer and inner displays. The Z Flip 5 is rumoured to sport a larger external display than the Z Flip 4 (though it’s not as big as the rumoured Motorola Razr 40 Ultra screen). The rumours clearly show the larger outer screen, with the rumoured ‘tab’ to make room for the cameras.

Along with the renders, MediaPeanut detailed some specs of the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The publication reports Samsung’s upcoming foldable will include a 6.7-inch main display, a 3.4-inch cover display, dual rear cameras, and measure 165 x 71.8 x 6.7mm when unfolded.

Beyond that, MediaPeanut suggests the phone could run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, feature battery improvements and launch in late July with a $999 USD (roughly $1,353.73 CAD) price tag. We could also see faster UFS 4.0 storage, at least in the models with 256GB of storage.

Overall, the Z Flip 5 seems to be shaping up well. However, I’m not entirely sold on the tabbed external display, especially after seeing the Razr 40 Ultra leaks. Motorola’s foldable will have a slightly larger 3.5-inch cover display that extends almost to the edge. Interestingly, the cameras are placed inside the display, similar to the hole-punch selfie camera popularized on many devices. To me, that looks a lot better than the tab, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see the phones in person — in my experience, controversial design choices tend to look better in person than in renders and photos.

Samsung’s next Z Flip might come with a new always on display

Samsung might be updating its always-on display technology, according to reputable Twitter leaker @Revegnus. According to this latest rumour, the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature iPhone 14 Pro-inspired always-on display.

Samsung phones have featured always-on screens dating as far back as 2015’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. While Apple only introduced its own always-on display last year, the company did so in a less conventional way.

By default, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max always-on display dims the entire lock screen. On the other hand, Android solutions typically feature a black screen with minimal text, while Apple embraces the dimmed wallpaper look.

Apple’s implementation proved controversial, with the company eventually giving users the option to revert to a more Android-like experience.  Now, it looks like Samsung is looking to give its users a splash of iPhone flavour in return.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is shaping up to be a welcome upgrade over the previous generation. The product is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Watch 6 this summer.

New alleged Samsung render reveals larger screen for the Galaxy Z Flip 5

With Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Fold line remaining stagnant design-wise for the past few years, it’s safe to say that the Flip 5 is due for a cosmetic upgrade.

One improvement Samsung is looking to capitalize on is the screen size, with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 planning to make the cover display bigger to improve both functionality and aesthetic (see below).

A new render created by SamMobile based on leaked information shows that this change could be a substantial upgrade for the product line.

The Z Flip 5 is reported to expand the display size to somewhere between 3 to 4-inches, with previous rumours narrowing the expected size down to 3.4-inches.

This is a considerable improvement to Samsung’s previous entry, the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Released in August of last year in Canada, the Z Flip 4 featured a measly 1.34-inch cover screen.

Although adequate for checking notifications or incoming calls, the increased screen size slated for the Z Flip 5 provides more space for users to conduct tasks that require more than a brief glance.

The new render shows that a potential design would see the outer display host a square aspect ratio and cover nearly all of the outer shell of the phone.

A larger external display opens up lots of opportunities for Samsung when it comes to how the company wants to incorporate its One UI user interface on the new device. Options such as running apps directly from the cover screen could become a real possibility if Samsung chooses to do so.

This, when paired with rumours of an upgraded folding screen and increased durability, makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5 a product to keep an eye on as developments continue.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is predicted to be officially revealed in August of this year alongside the Z Fold 5.
