Embracer Group shuts down former Square Enix Montreal studio right after rebrand

Prolific mobile game developer Onoma, formerly known as Square Enix Montreal, has been shut down.

As reported by Bloomberg, parent company Embracer Group informed Onoma employees of the closure during a November 1st meeting. Around 200 employees are affected.

It’s a surprise move considering Onoma only just joined the Embracer fold in August following the sale of several Square Enix studios to the Swedish media giant. Earlier this month, the Canadian developer rebranded as Onoma — Greek for “name” — to reflect its new identity post-acquisition.

Founded in 2011, Onoma was best known for its work in the mobile game space, creating acclaimed titles like Lara Croft Go and Hitman Go. The studio’s most recent game, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, launched in March.

According to Bloomberg, some Onoma employees will be relocated to sister studio Eidos Montreal, although it appears that the majority of the team has been laid off. In the same report, Bloomberg notes that Eidos Montreal is working on three projects: a new IP that’s been recently “rescoped,” a new Deus Ex (said to be in early development) and co-development partnerships with Xbox on multiple titles, including the next Fable.

Eidos Montreal shipped the critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy over a year ago, but this is the first we’ve heard about the team’s next titles. Unfortunately, then, that word had to come as part of the news of another studio’s closure.

Someone got Apple’s macOS running on Valve’s Steam Deck

This is the latest edition of, just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should.

Following up news that Apple could plan to bring macOS to the iPad, it looks like someone was able to get Apple’s desktop operating system running on a Steam Deck.

Why would someone do this? I’m not entirely sure.

Reddit user Lampa182 posted several images of macOS Catalina running inside of a VirtualBox virtual machine on Valve’s handheld gaming device. To be clear, this isn’t macOS natively running off the Steamdeck and instead of a bit of operating system inception. Still, it’s interesting someone put the effort into making it happen.

According to Lampa183, macOS’ performance on the Steam Deck is mostly normal, but “some animations are laggy” and booting up the operating system (OS) “takes 2 to 4 minutes.” Further, the touchscreen is only “partially” working and “sound, GPU and (for some reason) security settings” still aren’t running on Valve’s portable.

With all of this in mind, it doesn’t seem like there’s a real purpose to getting macOS running on the Steamdeck beyond proving that it’s somethign you can do.

It’s possible to install Windows on Valve’s Steam deck, complete with official driver plugins supplied by Valve, thanks to SteamOS’ Arch Linux-based operation system. This opens the Steam Deck up to additional accessories and, more importantly, installing titles outside of the Steam ecosystem on the device from stores like the Epic Game Store and the Xbox Store.

For more on the Steam Deck, check out my in-depth story about the PC-like handheld.

Canadiana alert: Check out this puzzle-maker

“I think it’s in the Constitution that you have to have a puzzle at the cottage,” jokes Brigitte Gall. She and her husband, photographer Michael Bainbridge, founded TheOccurrence, a toy and game company, in 2018 after watching their friends huddle around a puzzle of van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” on a freezing New Year’s Eve. “We looked at each other and had that little lightbulb moment,” recalls Brigitte. “We could make puzzles with Michael’s photography.”

They launched the company just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. (“We accidentally opened up a jigsaw puzzle business at exactly the right time,” says Michael.) By now they’ve made roughly 30,000 puzzles; TheOccurrence specializes in niche Canadiana imagery including scenes from Ontario cottage country. The Road Trip series—featuring road signs from areas including Haliburton and Lanark County—is a favourite of Brigitte and Michael’s. They spent days traveling around cottage country and photographing the signs. “It was really surprising, actually, to see how much the culture of a place was evident in the road signs,” says Michael “And it’s fun to capture that for each of the different places.”

Learn more about TheOccurrence

Brigitte is a long-time Haliburton cottager, and the couple moved to the area full-time in 2009. They support the community however they can, from manufacturing the puzzles in-house to using environmentally conscious materials such as 100 per cent recycled board and paper, and water-based inks for printing. Brigitte takes pride in the puzzles and the company. “We’re like the Ravensburger of the north.”

5 regional card games from across Canada

Want a change from classic euchre and bridge? Try one of these other trick-taking card games, popular in different regions of Canada. (A typical trick-taking game is one where players each play one card in succession, with one player winning the round or the set of cards—the “trick.”)

1) Forty-fives, East Coast

This game originated in Ireland, eventually moving into Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and other parts of eastern Canada. There are variations, but in traditional Forty-Fives, the goal is to accumulate points by winning tricks, eventually reaching 45. You can play with two, four, or five or more players. Learn the rules.

2) 200 a.k.a. Deux Cents, New Brunswick and Quebec

As with Forty-Fives, the object of the game is to gather points, up to—wait for it—200. Players compete in teams. Only aces, 10s, and 5s are worth points, so players can only gain points by winning tricks that contain these cards. Learn the rules.

3) Hola, Western Canada

“Hola” is a Slavic word that means “nakedness”—but there’s no nudity in this game. (That’s Strip Poker.) The game works with two or four players (or six if using a second deck of cards). What sets it apart is that unlike in other trick-taking games, a player’s card is only beaten by a card of equal, not higher value, or by a wild card. In Hola, 7s and 2s are wild. Learn the rules.

4) Rook, Ontario and Manitoba

Playing with kids? Family-friendly Rook is a trump-based trick-taking game played with a deck of specialized playing cards. The deck is similar to a standard deck of cards but only contains cards numbered from 1 through 14 in four colours. There are no face cards, and no card suits. Learn the rules.

5) Kaiser, Saskatchewan

Kaiser is a four-player, two-team game using only 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. Teams bid and take tricks, the goal being to get their hands on the 5 of Hearts and avoid the 3 of Spades. (A different version of Kaiser, called Les Rois, is popular in Quebec; in this version, the King of Hearts is worth the most points, and the King of Spades is worth the least—hence the game’s name.) Learn the rules.

Ted Lasso, LeBron James and more have been datamined for MultiVersus

MultiVersus is an upcoming free-to-play crossover game featuring a variety of Warner Bros. characters, including Bugs Bunny, Batman, Steven Universe and more. Now, a new leak indicates that the beloved Ted Lasso is also on the way.

Reddit user “hugeleakeractually,” who confirmed the game’s existence and some of the current characters, has leaked a number of the fighting game’s upcoming roster. This is based on a data mine of the game’s code.

Some of the names are what we would expect, including Fred Flinstone, Johny Bravo, Scooby-Doo and the Powerpuff Girls, but it looks like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso are also making the cut. Alongside those two is LeBron James, who was featured in last year’s Space Jam: A New Legacy movie.

While this game probably won’t be as loved as Super Smash Bros, alpha gameplay videos and a quirky lineup of characters definitely makes this game very appealing.

MultiVersus is slated to launch later this year on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and PC.

Netflix is getting three new mobile games in March, including an FPS

Netflix has revealed three new games that are coming to its platform on Android and iOS in March.

Notably, one of these titles is PikPok’s Into The Dead 2: Unleashed, a first-person shooter (FPS) sequel that comes 10 years after the original mobile game. In Unleashed, players must save their family during a zombie apocalypse using guns, melee weapons, explosives and more. A specific release date has not yet been confirmed; Netflix simply says “coming soon.”

In the meantime, there are two other games that are available as of March 22nd.

The first, This is a True Story, is a puzzle game that was developed by Frosty Pop in collaboration with Charity: Water, a non-profit that brings clean and safe drinking water to developing nations. With that in mind, the game follows a Sub-Saharan African woman on her daily excursions to get water for her family.

Finally, there’s PikPok’s Shatter Remastered, an updated version of the 2009 brick-breaking PS3 game.  Shatter Remastered features a bunch of power-ups, boss battles and special attacks that players can use to achieve high scores.

These three titles are part of the Netflix Games catalogue, which is available at no additional cost to Netflix users on Android and iOS.
