Indoor games to play with your dog this winter

For fans of winter, the cottage can be a wonderland, and many dogs agree. They love to frolic in the frosty snow. But there is such a thing as weather that is too cold for your dog. We’re here to help you know when it’s time to stay inside and what indoor games you can play with your dog.

How cold is too cold?

Not all dogs can tolerate cold the same way. For example, Alaskan malamutes originated in the north and have the coat to thrive at temps as low as minus 10 Celsius. On the other hand, greyhounds originated in Egypt, and their lean bodies are designed for high-speed chases, not enduring the cold. They would appreciate a coat even at plus 10 degrees Celsius.

In general, temperatures at 0 Celsius and below have the potential to be dangerous. If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your dog. But there are other factors to consider. Senior dogs and puppies feel the cold more, as do smaller dogs and those with thinner coats. And don’t forget about wet weather or the wind chill, both of which can make typically tolerable temperatures too cold for your pet.

Sweaters, jackets, and boots can all help make your dog more comfortable outside, but it’s still important to watch them for signs they’ve had enough, such as shivering, whining, or holding their paws off the ground. And before venturing into the cold for prolonged activity, speak to your vet about your individual dog’s tolerance.

6 ways to exercise your dog in the winter

Dogs need enrichment indoors

Dogs require both physical exercise and mental simulation year-round, even on chilly winter days. If they don’t get enough, they become bored and prone to problem behaviours—not to mention weight gain, stiff joints, and other health issues. Plus, the time you spend exercising or playing with your dog strengthens the dog-owner bond.

But how do you ensure your dog’s brain and body get exercise when you’re stuck indoors? It can be as simple as playing fetch up and down the stairs or ramping up your training sessions. Your dog will benefit from any play or positive attention. However, we have some fun indoor dog games indoor to keep winter exciting.

Build an indoor agility course

The sport of agility is simply an obstacle course for dogs, and you can easily create your own with items around the house. Turn large cardboard boxes into tunnels, balance a broom handle on two piles of books to make a jump, or have your dog walk across cushions to challenge their balance. Never force your dog to tackle an obstacle. Lure them with treats or a toy and reward them for trying.

Teach a new trick

Trick training is just for fun, so you and your dog can enjoy the process and forget about the results. And if your dog does master a new trick, you have something to show off to friends and family. Try teaching behaviours like spin or bow that stretch your dog’s muscles as well as their brain. Or what about working on a freestyle routine? That’s dancing with your dog to music, and it’s a terrific way for you both to exercise.

Play tug-of-war

Tug-of-war is beloved by most dogs because it taps into their predatory instincts. But relax; it won’t create aggression. (Although it’s not an appropriate choice for dogs who already have aggression or resource guarding issues.) Indoor dog games, like tug-of-war with rules, helps dogs learn emotional self-control. Teach your dog to drop things on cue so you can end the game when you want.

Provide your dog with puzzle toys

Puzzle toys require your dog to problem-solve. For example, they might need to lift a flap to expose hidden food. These toys challenge your dog’s brain as they figure out what they’re supposed to do. If puzzle toys are new to your dog, start with easier options until your dog gets the hang of problem-solving.

Play hide-and-seek

Hide-and-seek allows your dog to use their powerful sense of smell. Play together by placing your dog in a sit-stay, then hide from them. Call their name and let them follow their nose. Or you can hide a treat or toy for your dog to find. Either way, start with easy hiding places, then slowly increase the challenge.

Try scent work

Scent work is the search for hidden odours. It’s a great mental workout that taps into your dog’s instincts. This indoor dog game can be as simple as hiding a tea bag or toy for your dog to find, or you can invest in essential oils, like birch, to replicate competition scent work. Your first step is teaching your dog to associate the smell with rewards. Then hide the container holding the odour in increasingly concealed locations.

Doug Bowser says Nintendo takes N64 emulation feedback ‘very seriously’

Nintendo released its Switch Online Expansion Pack back in October, which included access to official emulations of old N64 games like Mario Kart 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. However, following the launch, several people took to social media to complain about the quality of the emulation.

You can read the full details here, but in short, users reported input lag, sound delays, frame rate problems and more.

In an interview with The Verge, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to complaints, saying:

“We’re constantly looking for ways to make our online features and those games better and continuing to add value through more services and more games as we go forward. We take the feedback very seriously, and we’re continuing to look at ways to improve the overall performance. For us, it’s about quality and great content at a great value.”

Although the comment comes off as a rather uninspired PR statement, hopefully Nintendo backs it up with some work to improve the situation for customers.

Bowser also touched on other topics in the interview, including Switch sales — Nintendo cut its sales forecast between April 2021 and March 2022 by 1.5 million units due to the global chip shortage, and Bowser doesn’t expect that to change soon.

Finally, Bowser also talked about Joy-Con drift, a long-running issue plaguing the Switch:

“As we’ve gone through the first five and a half years of the Nintendo Switch, we’ve observed gameplay, we’ve observed as people have returned units how they’ve worn, and we’ve been making continuous improvements overall to the Joy-Con, including the analog stick. This latest version, Nintendo Switch OLED, has the same updated analog stick that’s now available in the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite.”

Those interested can check out the full interview from The Verge here.

Nintendo confirms plans to close Toronto and California offices

Nintendo confirmed it will close offices in Toronto, Ontario and Redwood City, California.

In a statement to The Verge, Nintendo of America confirmed the change, which was first reported by Kotaku on Friday:

“Nintendo of America headquarters are in Redmond, WA, and Vancouver, BC. We are moving more of our employees and operations into those headquarters and will be closing small satellite offices in Toronto, ON, and Redwood City, CA, over time.

“Devon Pritchard, Executive Vice President, Business Affairs and Publisher Relations for Nintendo of America (NOA), will assume interim leadership of Sales, Marketing and Communications following the departure of Nick Chavez. Ms. Pritchard will oversee strategy and execution of sales, marketing and communications across the U.S. and Canada.”

Kotaku also reported that the decision will displace about 100 employees from the Redwood City offices — it’s not clear what impact the closure will have on Toronto employees. That said, it also sounds like some employees will be able to relocate to other headquarters (such as the one in Vancouver, B.C.).

Unfortunately, Nintendo didn’t elaborate on why it was closing the offices.

Both the Redwood City and Toronto offices remain on the Nintendo of America Careers website. Nintendo describes the Redwood City site as a place for sales and marketing departments, while the Toronto location is the “sales office for NOCL.”

Considering both locations are listed as sales and/or marketing offices, the closures likely won’t impact any of the games Nintendo is currently working on. It’s also worth noting the closures come after the launch of Nintendo’s OLED Switch and Metroid Dread, one of the company’s biggest games of the year.

iPhone apps and games track you, even if you ask them not to

Surprise, surprise: it turns out some iPhone apps still track users even when they use Apple’s new App Tracking Transparency feature to avoid being tracked.

For those who may not be familiar with it, Apple added App Tracking Transparency in an update to iOS 14 earlier this year. The feature lets users block apps from accessing their device’s Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), a sort of advertising identification number tied to a device. The change should prevent apps from sharing data gathered about you from your iPhone or iPad with third-party companies (for example, Instagram could still share data with Facebook since they’re the same company).

Unfortunately, what should happen and what does happen are often completely different things. And according to an investigation from The Washington Post in conjunction with privacy-focused app developer Lockdown (via Input), some apps and games ignore users’ settings.

Of the ten apps studied, Lockdown found that none stopped tracking when users asked not to be tracked. The investigation found at least three popular iPhone games, including Subway Surfers, sent user data to third-party advertising companies, regardless if users had enabled App Tracking Transparency. Worse, the investigation found that Apple had done nothing to stop it, despite being alerted to the issue.

Blocking IDFA access doesn’t matter because apps can fingerprint users with other data

Here’s the thing — blocking an app’s access to your IDFA actually works, in the most barebones, basic way. The apps studied in the investigation didn’t have access to users’ IDFA and didn’t use it for tracking. Instead, they effectively created their own IDFA for devices by gathering various other metrics.

Going back to the Subway Surfers example, the investigation found it sent 29 data points about users’ devices to an ad company called ‘Chartboost.’ Some of the data points included users’ IP address, remaining free storage, current volume level, accessibility settings, device name, time zone, country, carrier and more.

Gathering a bunch of device data like this is actually a common tracking tactic called fingerprinting. By gathering a large amount of seemingly innocuous data about a users’ device, companies can effectively track that device (and, by extension, the user) across various apps and platforms.

Few of the developers behind the apps responded to requests for comment from The Washington Post. However, Subway Surfers developer Sybo did, and claimed it gathered the data “for the game to function properly.” While maybe some of the data points could help the game work — for example, getting accessibility settings could help the game accommodate users who rely on those options — most of the data should have no impact on the function of the game.

Apple needs to do more if it wants to be a privacy-first company

More than anything, the investigation demonstrates that Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature is, ultimately, not that helpful. Worse, it may even be detrimental by lending users a false sense of security. Apple’s effectively telling users that they don’t have to worry about being tracked if they enable the feature. App Tracking Transparency also bolsters the company’s privacy-first image — I’ve seen plenty of social media posts about how App Tracking Transparency convinced people to switch from Android to iPhone to improve their privacy.

If Apple were really serious about privacy, it would add fingerprinting protection to iOS to reduce or hopefully stop tracking practices like this. In its current form, App Tracking Transparency is, at best, shallow marketing. At worse, it’s detrimental to user privacy by tricking people into thinking they’re protected when they aren’t.

The Pokémon Card Game is heading to mobile and desktop

The Pokémon Company International has unveiled its new Pokémon Trading Card game app. Officially named Pokémon TCG Live, this free-to-play game will be available on Android, iOS, PC, and Macs.

The launch comes as part of The Pokémon Company’s 25th Pokémon anniversary celebrations. Oddly, though, Pokémon cards didn’t actually come for two years after the initial launch of the game and a year after the anime and manga.

Despite launching later, that hasn’t stopped the card game’s popularity or how much people spend on a single card. In February 2021, a near-mint holographic Pikachu card sold for $375,000.

This new online experience is designed for beginners to learn to play the game, and existing players can improve and test their skills. Trainers will be able to build decks and battle each other around the world. There will also be daily quests and the ability to customize your avatar.

According to The Pokémon Company, Pokémon TCG Live releases soon on iOS and Android and on PC and Macs later this year, with an initial soft launch in Canada.

PlayStation finally shows off God of War Ragnarök

During Sony’s PlayStation event the Santa Monica Studios gave us our first real look at God of War Ragnarok.

It seems like the game will focus on trying to end Ragnarok.

You’ll be fighting against bigger enemies like Centaurs, lizard-like creatures and more. It looks like you’ll be

Eventually, you’ll find the Norse God of war, Tyr. And Thor is the one speaking in the trailer. Santa Monica Studios has confirmed that the Allfather, Odin, will also be taking a bigger part in the game. Odin was not seen in the original game, but you can see his green ravens everywhere, watching the player.
