Xbox app on Windows 10 now lets you stream games from consoles or the cloud

The Xbox app on Windows 10 now allows you to stream games from either your home console or via the cloud.

PC game streaming had been in beta for the past several weeks but is now rolling out officially to everyone. However, this is the first time that Microsoft is making Remote Play on PC available for Xbox Series X/S.

In order to stream, you’ll need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which costs $16.99 CAD/month, as well as a compatible controller. You’ll then find a ‘cloud gaming’ option in the Xbox app which will let you stream hundreds of Game Pass titles.

For more on Game Pass, find out what’s coming to the service later this month.

PlayStation 5 SSD support rolls out to everyone on September 15

September’s major PS5 firmware update will bring support for M.2 SSD storage expansion to all users.

This feature has only been available to PlayStation beta testers since late July.

Launching September 15th, the software update will allow PS5 owners to use a compatible SSD to increase their console’s storage capacity. However, keep in mind that the process is rather convoluted and, therefore, you’ll need to do a bit of research to find out which ones will actually work with the PS5.

PlayStation has also put together this video to show you how to install an SSD:

While M.2 SSD support is the highlight of the new PS5 system update, it does include several other notable features.

In particular, the update introduces 3D Audio support for built-in TV speakers. The feature, which produces more immersive spatial sounds, was previously only available via supported headphones like PlayStation’s Pulse Headset. To enable the setting, you’ll first have to measure the acoustics of your room using the DualSense controller’s microphone.

Additionally, the September update introduces several new UX enhancements:

  • Control Center customization — specific controls can be hidden or unhidden at the bottom of the screen
  • Enhanced Game Base — view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center
  • Game Library and Home Screen updates — PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game will be clearly indicated and separated on the Home screen and in the ‘Installed’ tab of the Game Library
  • Screen Reader controls — Pause or resume Screen Reader (Press ‘PS + Triangle buttons’) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press ‘PS  + R1 buttons’)

Other miscellaneous changes to the general PS5 experience include a resolution selector (between 720p and 1080p) and connection test tool for PlayStation Now, automatic recording of “personal best” videos (setting a new record in certain in-game challenges), and a Trophy Tracker to quickly access up to five trophies per game from the Control Center.

This is the PlayStation 5’s second major firmware update following one in April that added external USB support, cross-gen Share Play and more.

Outside of the PS5 system update, the PS Remote Play app on Android and iOS is also getting a couple of new features. Now, users can stream and play PS4 and PS5 games over mobile data as well as Wi-Fi, with PlayStation recommending a connection of 15Mbps for “the best experience.”

Additionally, a September 23rd app update will roll out the ability to view friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together. PlayStation says the Android version of this update is “a phased release and may take one week” to appear on your mobile device.

There’s actually a working PlayStation 4 emulator now

The world of video game console emulation is fascinating.

While the majority of emulation communities are focused on what most would consider retro consoles, including systems of yesteryear like the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo (SNES) and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), in 2019, a new Linux-based emulator called Spine appeared on the scene.

Like all emulators, the app essentially mimics the hardware featured in Sony’s PS4 through software, allowing it to run games designed for the console. Fast-forward to now and the team behind Spine says that roughly 300 games are compatible with the software, but that they’re primarily 2D titles that don’t require significant hardware power — from the looks of it, a lot of games seem pretty glitchy as well. This means that you won’t be playing God of War or Spider-Man: Miles Morales through Spine anytime soon.

After glancing at the list of compatible titles, there really aren’t any notable titles that I’m personally interested in playing, but that’s not really the point of emulation in the first place — the aim is video game preservation, at least in theory 👀.

With all of this in mind, it’s also important to note that Spine doesn’t feature a user interface, firmware or game files (you’ll have to *acquire* that data yourself).

Still, as the video game industry continues to move towards digital stores, emulators like Spine will become increasingly important because, at least in some cases, they could be the only way to preserve certain titles.

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham soccer team is coming to FIFA 22

EA has announced that FIFA 22 will feature Wrexham AFC, the Welsh soccer team co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

To celebrate, the official Wrexham Twitter account shared a brief video with Reynolds and McElhenney.

The FIFA series typically only includes teams from English Football’s League Two, which Wrexham isn’t a part of. However, it seems that the stars of Deadpool and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia helped make it happen. Reynolds and McElhenney have said that part of their goal in acquiring the club was to make it more of a global brand.

Wrexham will be found in FIFA 22‘s ‘Rest of World’ category, which includes an assortment of clubs that aren’t members of a major FIFA-signed league.

FIFA 22 is developed by EA Vancouver and will release on consoles and PC on October 1st.

Huge GeForce Now leaks teases tons of PlayStation, unannounced games on PC

A datamine of Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service has seemingly leaked a slew of games that are coming to PC.

As broken down on Reddit, C++ developer Ighor July found listings for dozens of games from PlayStation and other companies that haven’t yet been confirmed to be coming to PC.

Firstly, PlayStation exclusives God of War (2018), Returnal, Demon’s Souls and Ghost of Tsushima are all listed. Further, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection — which was only confirmed last week for both PS5 and PC — is listed with its full, accurate title.

Overall, these ports aren’t too surprising, as PlayStation said in May that it plans to bring more of its games to PC following the successful launch of Horizon Zero Dawn on the platform. Sony also recently acquired Nixxes, a studio with significant PC experience, as part of this initiative. Interestingly, though, PlayStation exclusives Marvel’s Spider-Man and Bloodborne were not listed in the database.

But what’s arguably more interesting is that the datamine also points to the existence of a variety of unannounced games, including Resident Evil 4 RemakeGrand Theft Auto Trilogy Remasters, Titanfall 3Kingdom Hearts IVBioShock 2022, Final Fantasy IX Remake, Injustice 3: Gods Will Fall and three new, untitled games from Square Enix.

Some of these are games we’ve heard credible reports on but have not yet been confirmed by their respective publishers, like RE4 Remake and the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remaster. However, games like Kingdom Hearts IV, Final Fantasy IX Remake and Injustice 3 are somewhat surprising to see.

It’s important to stress that these listings aren’t solid confirmations of existing games. These could be placeholder titles, prototypes for games that ultimately become significantly changed or projects that have been (or will be) cancelled. We’ve even seen a major video game convention use random words like “Canada” when testing a list of banned words for its forums and website.

However, Windows Central, a credible source for Microsoft-related news, lent some weight to these listings by corroborating the Xbox-specific games that were listed in the database. This includes Gears 6 from the Vancouver-based The Coalition, a new Forza, Project “Typhoon” (which it says is Avalanche’s recently revealed Contraband) and a new strategy simulator codenamed “Oxide.”

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see from the individual publishers about each of these games, which could be a while given the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nintendo’s Switch just got a permanent price cut in Europe

Nintendo has permanently lowered the price of the Switch in Europe, the company has confirmed to Eurogamer.

The Switch now costs £260 in the U.K. (about $455 CAD) and €300 (about $448 CAD) in other parts of Europe, compared to the previous £280 (about $490 CAD) and €330 (about $493 CAD).

In a statement to Eurogamer, a Nintendo spokesperson said the significant price drop was made based on “a variety of factors, including currency exchange rates in Europe and the upcoming launch of Nintendo Switch – OLED Model.”

For context, the Nintendo Switch is priced at $379 CAD, which is $20 less than what it was priced at launch in March 2017. It remains to be seen, then, whether a price drop will happen in Canada.

The OLED Model is set to release worldwide on October 8th at a cost of $449 CAD. It’s been rumored that the base Switch will go down in price in the U.S. to coincide with the launch of the OLED Model. The new Switch features mostly the same specs as its predecessor, with the exception of a slightly larger display with OLED, a new kickstand and an ethernet port.

Insomniac is making a Wolverine game for PlayStation 5

As if Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 wasn’t enough, Insomniac Games is also working on a game based on Marvel’s Wolverine character for PlayStation 5.

The announcement came during PlayStation Showcase 2021, although no further details were revealed. In a brief 45-second CG trailer, Wolverine can be seen being approached by someone in a bar before popping his signature claws.

In the past year, Insomniac has already released Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, so the fact that it’s working on two big upcoming Marvel games is particularly impressive.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Insomniac noted that Brian Horton, the creative director on Miles Morales, is leading development on Marvel’s Wolverine. However, the game is still “very early” on, with Insomniac head of franchise strategy & studio relations Ryan Schneider simply promising an “emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay.”

A release window for Marvel’s Wolverine has not yet been confirmed.
