HTC reveals new Vive XR Elite standalone VR headset

Once a leader in the consumer virtual reality space with the Vive, HTC’s more recent VR efforts have been focused on enterprise use cases.

However, that direction seems to be shifting with its new headset. At CES 2023, HTC showed off the Vive XR Elite, a new high-end VR headset designed to compete with the Meta Quest Pro.

The XR Elite looks like a standard VR headset, though its goggle-like design is more pronounced than what we’ve seen from HTC in the past, with the HTC Vive Flow being the one notable exception. The battery is also located in the back of the Vive Elite XR, taking weight off your face when you have it on, and the headset is overall 13 percent lighter than the Meta Quest Pro.

Other features include 2K displays for each eye with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 110-degree field of view. Under the hood, the XR Elite features a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR 2 processor, 12GB of RAM and 120GB of storage. Like the Oculus Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro, the Vive XR Elite can be plugged into a gaming PC over USB-C for a higher-end, desktop-powered VR experience. Battery life comes in at two hours alongside 30W fast charging that offers a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes.

The headset also ships with two wireless controllers that support hand-tracking. Additionally, it features a built-in full-colour RGB camera for mixed reality (MR) passthrough. HTC says that the headset features dials that allow you to adjust its lenses for prescriptions but that you can also wear it with glasses if you remove the battery and fit it with temple pads.

Unlike nearly every VR headset, you can fold up the XR Elite and slide it into a compact travel case like a pair of sunglasses. There’s even a retractable charging cable, making it easier to pack up the headset and tuck it away.

HTC says the XR Elite will have 100 games available at launch, along with Vive Connect.

The Vive XR Elite is available for pre-order now for $1,549, and the headset will be available to purchase in late February.

Sony says the PlayStation 5 shortage is over

During Sony’s CES 2023 keynote, the company’s gaming division leader, Jim Ryan, confirmed that the PlayStation 5 shortage is over.

Until recently, stories regarding PS5 restocks have been top traffic performers on MobileSyrup, but over the last few months, there’s been far less interest in restock coverage. Further, at least anecdotally and online, the console seems to remain in stock for far longer than it did even just a year ago.

Still, I’ve yet actually to see a PS5 in stock at a physical retailer, while the Xbox Series X seems to be everywhere.

During the keynote, Ryan said, “PS5 supply improved towards the end of last year,” before saying that “everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” Ryan also revealed that December was the biggest month of PlayStation 5 sales ever.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020 amid the height of the pandemic and global supply chain issues, leading to scarcity and ridiculous prices from resellers.

This Xbox controller features a built-in OLED display

Asus loves to put screens in everything.

The company’s new ROG Raikiri Pro Xbox/PC gamepad includes a customizable 1.3-inch OLED display that displays information like charging status, an option to mute your microphone, your active profile, animations, text and more.

The display seems entirely unnecessary, but at the same time, it’s still pretty cool.

Other features include Bluetooth, RF and USB-C connectivity, alongside an ESS DAC to improve audio quality from its 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, the controller can only connect to the Xbox through USB-C, which means it isn’t wireless on console.

Along with the familiar Xbox controller layout, there are four programmable rear buttons and trigger locks, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. Further, there’s an app that allows you to alter the gamepad’s deadzones, vibrations and more.

While a built-in screen is undeniably cool, it doesn’t seem to have an actual practical purpose, and I also question how it could affect battery life, considering that that the controller can connect to PCs wirelessly.

It’s unclear how much the Raikiri Pro will cost, but Asus says it will release in the first quarter of this year.

PlayStation’s ‘Project Leonardo’ is an accessibility controller kit for PS5

At CES 2023, PlayStation unveiled ‘Project Leonardo,’ a highly customizable accessibility controller kit to help players with disabilities.

Developed in partnership with game developers, consultants and accessibility charities like AbleGamers and SpecialEffect, Project Leonardo aims to offer a variety of configurations that work alongside many third-party accessibility accessories.

It’s also been designed to address several disability barriers, such as limited motor control, difficulty in holding a controller for prolonged periods or standard thumb and finger positioning on a standard controller. Its flat, spherical form means that it can easily rest on tables and wheelchair trays or be secured to AMPS mounts and rotated 360 degrees.

Additionally, the kit includes swappable components like a series of analogue stick caps and buttons of various shapes and sizes. These components, plus the PS5’s own button remapping feature, will allow players to set up control layouts that best suit their needs.

Project Leonardo can also be used as a standalone controller or alongside an additional Leonardo controller and DualSense gamepad. This will effectively create a “single” virtual controller that offers mix-and-match input capabilities or co-op play with others.

On top of that, Leonardo sports four 3.5mm AUX ports to connect all kinds of external switches and third-party accessibility accessories. For example, some disabled players who like to use custom 3D-printed specialty switches for added comfort could be able to connect those.

PlayStation didn’t confirm launch timing or pricing for Leonardo, but promised to share more “in the future.” For context, Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller, which offers similar features for those with disabilities, is priced at $129 CAD.

For now, though, it’s certainly good to see PlayStation reveal Leonardo. Ever since Microsoft launched that configurable accessibility gamepad in 2018, there have been calls for Sony to follow suit. To its credit, PlayStation has been ramping up its accessibility efforts on the software side during this time, with titles like The Last of Us Part I and II and God of War Ragnarök being highly praised for their robust suite of accessibility features. And now, we know that PlayStation’s answer to the Xbox Adaptive Controller is officially on the way.

In other PlayStation CES news, the company revealed that it’s sold 30 million PS5 units worldwide since the console’s November 2020 launch and confirmed that more than 30 games are on track for the PS VR2’s “launch window” (the headset releases on February 22nd).

FIFA 23 players discover Ryan Reynolds cameos months after launch

FIFA 23 players are delighted after discovering that Ryan Reynolds actually has a role in the game.

It’s all thanks to the Vancouver funnyman’s co-ownership of Wales’ Wrexham AFC, the world’s third-oldest football club, alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney. As a result of that increased exposure, EA Vancouver’s last two FIFA games have featured Wrexham as a playable team, although we’re only now finding out, three months after FIFA 23 released, that Reynolds and McElhenney actually recorded lines for EA’s latest soccer sim.

Via Polygon, a match between Wrexham and Liverpool will actually have regular commentators Derek Rae and Stewart Robson briefly pass the mics over to Reynolds and McElhenney for some banter. In this case, the pair joke that the “very small” club of Liverpool is up against the “massive” Wrexham. The Wrexham owners can also be heard if you have the club play against rival team Stockport County.

As it stands, it’s unclear whether any other Wrexham match-ups feature Reynolds and McElhenney voiceover. That said, now that people know about this, we may very well come across the pair elsewhere in FIFA 23. It’s likely that people never even knew about any of this because Wrexham is a one-star club, so players presumably weren’t actually using the team — at least, not against bigger clubs like Liverpool.

The story of Wrexham AFC is a fascinating one, as the low-ranking Welsh team was going through a particularly rough patch amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Enter Reynolds and McElhenney, who purchased the club in November 2020 and worked to improve its standings. That entire journey is covered extensively in Welcome to Wrexham, an 18-episode FX docuseries streaming on Disney+ in Canada.

In related news, Reynolds recently renewed hope for his low-cost Mint Mobile carrier coming to Canada.

The Last of Us multiplayer game will be revealed in 2023

More information about The Last of Us’ standalone multiplayer game is still coming in 2023.

In a recent blog post, The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann revealed the news, teasing a new piece of concept art for the upcoming multiplayer title. Druckmann also looks back at the past 10 years of the franchise, the recent release of The Last of Us Part I for the PlayStation 5 and HBO’s TV adaptation of the series that launches on January 15th.

The new concept art shows two characters in what seems to be a ruined coastal city looking at a giant cruise ship. Previously released concept art showed two characters, one with a molotov cocktail and another with a sniper rifle, standing on what appears to be a balcony.

In the blog post, Druckmann says that later in 2023, Naughty Dog “will begin to offer” additional “details” about The Last of Us’ multiplayer game. Beyond this, nothing else is revealed about the upcoming title.

A multiplayer mode called ‘Factions’ was featured in the original release of The Last of Us on PS3 and the remaster for the PS4, but it skipped the more recent PS5 remake of the title.

Elden Ring mod makes Pokémon Scarlet and Violet look better than ever

While games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 feature some pretty impressive mods, this is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen.

A modder (@Arestame_Arkeid) has blended Pokémon Scarlet and Violet into Elden Ring, making the former titles much prettier.

In the mod, you can use spirit summons and a Koraidon as your spectral steed. Additionally, the modder replaced several enemies with Pokémon, such as the Magma Wyrm with Skeledirge and the Black Knife Assassins with Meowscarada. The best of them all is the Walking Mausoleums are now giant Pokémon Centers.

Overall, the mod seems pretty great, and it’s definitely the best Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has ever looked. Of course, like most mods and projects tied to Nintendo properties, it’s not likely that this mod will be around for very long if it gets a public release.

Here are 10 Canadian games to look out for in 2023

2023 is shaping up to be a big year for games. Between the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the KingdomFinal Fantasy XVIMarvel’s Spider-Man 2Starfield, Street Fighter VI, Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorDiablo IV and Hogwarts Legacy, we’ll have no shortage of titles to play over the next 12 months.

While you’ve likely heard of most, if not all of those, what you may not have known is just how many other 2023 games hail from Canadian studios. Indeed, quite a few of them do, ranging from new entries in such major franchises as Minecraft and Dead Space to promising indies spanning all kinds of genres.

Due to the ever-evolving nature of game development, some of these are titles that have been delayed and, therefore, have shown up on previous lists. There’s also no guarantee that any of these games won’t see further delays. In the meantime, though, there’s a lot to be excited for in 2023 from Canadian developers, and here’s a small taste of that.

Dead Space

Isaac fights an alien in Dead Space remake.

Developer: EA Motive (Montreal, Quebec)
Publisher: EA
Genre: Sci-fi, horror, third-person shooter
Platform:
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Release date: January 27th, 2023

Nearly 10 years after the release of Dead Space 3, EA’s acclaimed sci-fi horror series is back, compliments of Canada’s own EA Motive (Star Wars: Squadrons). Taking inspiration from Capcom’s incredible remake of Resident Evil 2, the Montreal-based developer has created a compelling reimagining of Visceral’s original Dead Space that expands upon the original story while giving everything a stunning modern sheen. The remake also leverages current-gen consoles’ SSDs for a loading screen-free experience that should only enhance Dead Space‘s signature eerie atmosphere.

Farewell North

A Border Collie and woman stand in a field in the video game Farewell North

Developer: Kyle Banks
Publisher:
Mooneye Studios
Genre: Adventure
Platform:
PC
Release date: TBA 2023

Shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyle Banks and his wife moved from Canada to Scotland, and that journey helped inspire a video game. Enter Farewell North, an adventure game in which a young woman and her Border Collie must restore colour to a darkened world while recovering her memories. All told, it looks to be quite the emotional story about depression, and exploring the Scottish Highlands-inspired setting should make for a uniquely absorbing experience. And yes, you can absolutely pet the dog!

Goodbye Volcano High

A bunch of dinosaurs gather around a campfire in Goodbye Volcano High.

Developer/Publisher: KO_OP (Montreal, Quebec)
Genre: Narrative adventure
Platform: PlayStation 4/5 (timed console exclusive), PC
Release date: TBA 2023

After delays out of 2021 and 2022, Goodbye Volcano High is (hopefully) set to finally release this year. Focused on teenagers going through their final year of high school, the game aims to tell a sentimental coming-of-age story with anthropomorphic dinosaurs. And beneath that fantastical premise is a push for rare representation: Fang, the main character, is non-binary and actually voiced by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Lachlan Watson, one of Hollywood’s youngest non-binary actors.

Minecraft Legends

Minecraft Legends open-world.

Developer: Mojang, Blackbird Interactive (Vancouver, B.C.)
Publisher:
Xbox
Genre: Action-strategy
Platform:
Xbox consoles, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, PC
Release date: First half of 2023

One of the biggest games of all time is getting a brand-new spin-off in 2023, and it’s being co-developed by Vancouver’s own Blackbird. In Minecraft Legends, the Nether’s corruption of the Overworld leads a great hero to unite the mobs and defend their home. Gameplay-wise, Legends blends real-time action combat with ally-commanding strategy mechanics to deliver something wholly unique for Minecraft. You’ll also be able to team up with — or fight against — other players to defend your village.

Nightingale

Woman with gun approaches tree creature in Nightingale.

Developer/Publisher: Inflexion Games (Edmonton, Alberta)
Genre: Survival, crafting, shared world
Platform: PC
Release date: First half of 2023 (Early Access)

New IPs don’t come around often, and certainly not those from BioWare Edmonton alums (Star Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicMass Effect) like Aaryn Flynn. But Nightingale isn’t selling itself on pedigree alone — it aims to pull you in through its rich Victorian gas lamp setting filled with fearsome magical creatures. Whether on your own or with other players, you’ll have to travel the mystical land, build out your character and face off against monstrous beasts.

Ravenlok

A teenage girl fights a giant caterpillar monster in Ravenlok.

Developer/Publisher: Cococucumber (Toronto, Ontario)
Genre: Action-RPG
Platform: Xbox consoles (plus day one on Game Pass), PC
Release date: TBA 2023

In 2021, Cococumber released its acclaimed turn-based RPG Echo Generation, and now, the Canadian developer is crafting a more action-focused spin on the genre. As Ravenlok, players will be transported into a fantastical monster-infested world ruled by the evil Caterpillar Queen. Beyond the Alice in Wonderland and Ghibli-inspired setting, Cococucumber aims to tell a heartfelt coming-of-age story filled with real-time combat, creepy creatures and more of the studio’s signature charming voxel art style.

For more on Ravenlok, read our interview with Cococucumber co-founder and director Vanessa Chia.

Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars world

Developer/Publisher: Sabotage Studio (Quebec City, Quebec)
Genre: RPG
Platform: PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, PC
Release date: Mid-2023

Sea of Stars is a prequel to Sabotage’s acclaimed 2018 action-platformer, The Messenger, and follows two young heroes who must wield the power of the sun and moon to stop an evil alchemist. This retro-inspired RPG features new music from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda, as well as a teamwork-focused combat system inspired by the iconic Square RPG, a beautiful 2D pixel art style and grind-free progression system. All in all, it looks like a perfect mix of homage and modernity.

Sons of the Forest

Sons of the Forest cannibals combat

Developer: Endnight (Vancouver, B.C.)
Publisher: Newnight
Genre: Survival horror
Platform: PC
Release date: February 23rd, 2023

Studio Endnight’s sequel to its 2018 cult hit The Forest boasts a more realistic open-world sandbox filled with even deadlier threats to survive against. Now, though, you have a 3D printer to craft items, a greater number of weapon types, seasonal changes for warmer and colder weather challenges and full co-op support. Without any NPC quest-givers, how you survive in this cannibal-infested hellscape is entirely up to you.

Spiral

An elderly man standing in a room in Spiral.

Developer/Publisher: Folklore Games (Montreal, Quebec)
Genre: Narrative, adventure
Platform: PC
Release date: TBA 2023

For the past several years, two Canadian school friends have been toiling away at Spiral, a game about an elderly man going through cognitive degeneration. As you relive his memories one last time, his disease will begin to affect all facets of the game, including UI, music, characters and environment. At the same time, Folklore says it doesn’t want its debut title to be “tragic,” with the experience instead intended to evoke feelings of “empathy, patience and love.”

Venba

An Indian family eats together in Venba.

Developer/Publisher: Visai Games (Toronto, Ontario)
Genre: Narrative, cooking
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PC
Release date: Spring 2023

Following a delay out of 2022, Venba is ready to serve a delicious main course of South Indian cuisine. Drawing from creator Abhi’s personal experiences of immigrating to Toronto, Venba follows an Indian mother, her husband and their child as they adjust to life in Canada. By preparing signature Indian dishes, the family is able to reconnect with their homeland’s culture. Throw in a wonderfully distinct art style and authentic Indian soundtrack and Venba looks real appetizing.

For more on Venba, read our interview with Abhi.

Of course, this only covers some of the games that are confirmed for 2023; others include The Outlast Trials from Quebec City-based Red Barrels, Tails: The Backbone Preludes from Vancouver-based Eggnut and Homeworld 3 (Blackbird Interactive).

That’s to say nothing of the many Canadian games that we know are on the way, but likely are still a ways off:

And, naturally, there are so many more unannounced Canadian games that could be formally revealed throughout the year.

For now, though, which Canadian games are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments.

A round-up of 2022’s top Canadian games can be found here.
