Game of the Year 2022 winner is Elden Ring

At Canadian’s Geoff Keighley’s 2022 Game Awards, it’s been announced that this year’s Game of the Year, is Elden Ring. Personally, Elden Ring was what I voted for to win GOTY at the 2022 Game Awards because I’m a big fan of the title.

Elden Ring was released in January of 2022, and I spent hours upon hours playing this game.

The game was developed by FromSoftware, but its amazing lore was created by Songs of Ice and Fire’s (Game of Thrones) George RR Martin.

Most recently, the game added a PVP colosseum mode for players to fight against one another.

Check out our Elden Ring coverage:

Elden Ring brings exploration and death to a new level

Elden Ring’s beta was a delicious appetizer before the eventual main course

If you haven’t played this title, you definitely should give it a shot.

CD Projekt Red is ending support for Gwent in 2023

CD Projekt Red is ending support for its Gwent mobile game after September 2023. The developer showed off its roadmap for the card game, revealing there will be no new cards or active support after the final card release in September.

The video indicates the final batch will feature 72 new cards, and they’ll release in April, July and September. The developers will watch over the final batch of cards to see if any balance changes are necessary. Following this, the company plans to allow players to decide if they want to balance cards.

“We want to give you, the Gwent community, the right tools and opportunities to drive the balance changes of the game going forward,” the developers said in the video. Further, CD Projekt Red is working on a way for players to leave feedback on cards that require balancing in-game so they can continue and fix balance issues, even after CD Projekt Red ends support.

CD Projekt Red is also ending support for The Witcher: Monster Slayer, the company’s Pokémon Go-like game, in 2023. Monster Slayer will be removed from the App Store and Play Store on January 31st, with servers shutting down on June 3oth.

CD Projekt Red has previously said it’s working on new Witcher experiences, remaking the first Witcher game and creating additional content for Cyberpunk 2077, so it makes sense the company is focusing on these bigger launches.

PvP modes are coming to Elden Ring on December 7th

Elden Ring is finally bringing a PVP arena to the Lands Between. While most players knew it’d eventually happen since the game has always had colosseums that you couldn’t enter, it’s taken months for it to come to fruition.

The new PVP mode launches on December 7th on all platforms.

FromSoftware’s recent patch added separate damage scaling for PvP weapons, spells, shields and others, which means now the single player can be adjusted separately from the PVP gameplay.

The Game Awards will be streaming live on December 8th, where many fans, like myself, are hoping for news regarding an Elden Ring expansion. While FromSoft’s previous title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, didn’t have DLCs, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 did; therefore, more content coming to Elden Ring isn’t impossible.

Microsoft to raise price of Xbox Series X/S games in 2023 ahead of Starfield

The cost of Xbox Series X/S games is officially set to increase next year.

In a statement to IGN, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the price of first-party games for its current-gen consoles will increase from $60 to $70 USD (roughly $95 CAD) in 2023.

Canadian pricing wasn’t confirmed, but other current-gen titles cost $90 CAD, so it’s likely that Xbox will follow suit. We’ve reached out to Xbox for confirmation and will update this response once a response has been received.

“This price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles,” the representative told IGN, noting that all of these games will also be on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

2023 is set to be a big year for Xbox, with heavy hitters like Bethesda’s Starfield and Redfall set for the first half of the year. The next Forza Motorsport is also slated for 2023. There are many other undated, long-gestating Xbox first-party titles, such as Obsidian’s Avowed, Rare’s Everwild and Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

That said, Xbox Game Pass has been offering day one access to all Xbox first-party games since 2018, giving consumers an alternative from paying full price to purchase titles. Xbox Game Pass costs $11.99/month on Xbox and PC or $16.99/month for Game Pass Ultimate, which includes the service for both platforms as well as Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Cloud Gaming and EA Play.

Xbox raising game prices brings the company in line with several other publishers. Sony has been charging $90 CAD for PS5 titles, while third-parties like 2K and EA have been charging the same amount for most of their big games. Ubisoft also confirmed in September that its upcoming AAA games will cost $70 USD. As it stands, Nintendo continues to sell Switch games for $60 USD/$80 CAD.

The Xbox games price increase comes shortly after Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed that consoles themselves won’t see a price increase until at least after this holiday season. It also remains to be seen when Game Pass itself may see a price hike, especially if the big games it includes, such as Starfield, are set to cost more.

What is your game of the year?

It’s just about the end of the year, and next week is Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards, a celebration of the games that launched throughout 2022. If you haven’t voted for your game of the year yet, check out the site here.

With that in mind, this week’s Community Question is: what was your favourite game this year?

For myself, it’s hard to say. I absolutely loved God of War RagnarökI think it’s a title that everyone with a PlayStation 4/5 needs to play. The action-adventure game tells the story of a man and his teenage son living through the Norse apocalypse. However, while I really enjoyed Ragnarök, my game of the year is Elden Ring.

I’m a massive fan of Soulsborne games, and the world of the ‘Lands Between’ is incredibly beautiful and filled with grotesque and strange yet, beautiful monsters (and in the game I’m basically a Targaryen, without the incest). The awesome weapons, cool spells, and the fact that it’s an entirely new IP are what make it my game of the year.

Let us know in the comments below what your favourite game of the year is.
