Activision Blizzard facing new sexual harassment lawsuit

Activision Blizzard is facing another sexual harassment suit, just over one year after reports surfaced of a toxic “frat boy” work culture within the company.

The new suit, filed in Los Angeles by an unnamed former female employee, specifically names both Activision Blizzard and her former manager, Miguel Vega. The employee alleges that Vega repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances while threatening to fire her and release a compromising photo if she didn’t comply. Activision Blizzard, meanwhile, is accused of failing to address her concerns when raised while also fostering a toxic work culture that “emboldened” Vega:

Activision Blizzard’s failure to curb sexist and harassing conduct emboldened manager Miguel Vega to abuse, belittle and insult Ms. Doe by making comments to her about oral sex, masturbation and orgasms, threatening her job if she would not consent to sex, mocking her breasts, and commenting on other female employees’ attractiveness. Mr. Vega also repeatedly threatened to expose a compromising photo of Ms. Doe.

The plaintiff says she first met Vega between 2009 and 2010 before working at Activision Blizzard, during which time they “formed a virtual friendship and she regrettably sent him compromising photos of herself.” She says they ended their friendship in 2011 once she met her husband, but reconnected in 2016 as Vega helped her get a job as an independent contractor at Activision Blizzard. It was between 2016 and 2021, she says, that he made “unwanted sexual advances” towards her:

At work, Mr. Vega repeatedly groped Ms. Doe’s breasts around a dozen times. On each occasion, he would squeeze, grab or poke her breasts and she immediately recoiled at these unwanted advances. He often attempted to kiss her at work. All of Mr. Vega’s sexual advances upon Ms. Doe were unwelcomed. After each time she rejected him, he’d assure her that “one day it’ll happen” or “one day you’ll give in.”

She says she first reported him to Activision Blizzard HR in 2017, at which time the company “did nothing.” Vega’s misconduct and her reporting both allegedly continued until August 2021, when he was reported to her manager and ultimately terminated in September 2021. In a statement to Daily Mail, Activision Blizzard claimed it “immediately” opened an investigation upon hearing of the employee’s concerns and terminated Vega “within 10 days,” adding that it has “no tolerance for this kind of misconduct.”

Ultimately, the woman says the whole experience impacted her job performance and left her “humiliated, depressed and anxious.” She is seeking damages and lost pay, as well as an order to require Activision Blizzard to end its arbitration policies for sexual harassment and gender-discrimination claims.

As mentioned, this is the latest in a long line of allegations against Activision Blizzard. The gaming giant was first accused in a July 2021 lawsuit of fostering a toxic “frat boy” culture at its U.S. studios in which many employees, particularly women, dealt with harassment, gender discrimination, unequal pay and other forms of mistreatment. Bobby Kotick, the company’s CEO, has specifically come under fire for allegedly working to cover up these reports and has faced calls to resign, yet he still leads the company.

It remains to be seen what, if anything, might change at Activision Blizzard, especially amid Microsoft’s pending acquisition of the company.

Final Fantasy VII’s mobile battle royale is shutting down in January

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier will shut down on January 11th, 2023, Square Enix has confirmed.

This will be just over one year after the free-to-play battle royale game launched on Android and iOS in November 2021.

“Despite all our efforts to bring you regular updates with fresh and exciting content, we haven’t been able to deliver the experience that we were hoping to, and that you all deserve, so we have made the extremely tough decision to end service for Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier,” Square Enix wrote in a statement via the game’s official Twitter account.

The company adds that it will continue to provide updates for the game leading up to its closure. However, Shinra Credits, the game’s in-app currency that can be purchased with real money, have been removed from the in-game shop. Therefore, only previously purchased Shinra Credits can be used until service ends.

Square Enix attempted to make The First Soldier stand out through multiplayer combat that mixed traditional guns with character classes, spells, monsters and locations from Final Fantasy VII. That said, the battle royale market is incredibly saturated, even on mobile, due to juggernauts like FortnitePUBG, Apex Legends and Call of Duty.

While The First Soldier is coming to an end, the Final Fantasy VII series is pushing along at full speed. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, a remaster of the PSP prequel to the original FFVII, will launch on consoles and PC on December 13th. Additionally, Ever Crisis, a mobile retelling of the entire Final Fantasy VII series, is set to hit mobile sometime later this year. And, of course, there’s the highly anticipated sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which will release on PS5 sometime “next winter.”

Valve rolls out overhauled Steam Mobile app to everyone on Android and iOS

Valve has launched its revamped Steam Mobile app on Android and iOS.

The company was beta testing the updated app earlier this year, but this marks the official wide release.

To start, the app sports a redesign that streamlines navigation, making it easier to manage your Steam account. From the app, you can download games to your PC, browse Steam and make purchases and receive notifications about sales and friend requests.

Further, Valve says the app offers improved security by letting you simply scan a QR code to sign into your desktop or PC. The company adds that it’s looking into expanding this functionality to Steam Deck.

You can see the updated app in action in this brief video:

In other Valve news, the company recently announced that its popular Steam Deck handheld is now available for outright purchase — no reservation process required.

Here’s how you can export your Cyberpunk 2077 progress from Stadia to PC/console

Cyberpunk 2077 players that played the game on Stadia now have a way to rescue their game progress from the dying platform.

If you’re looking to salvage your progress from Stadia, you’ll have to use Google’s Takeout service to export your data as a downloadable archive file and bring it over to your PC.

It’s worth noting that if you want to save your game files, you’ll have to do so before January 18th, 2023 (the day Stadia shuts down). Follow the steps below:

  1. Head to Google Takeout
  2. Click on ‘deselect all’ and select ‘Stadia’
  3. Choose your preferred destination for the export, i.e. via email, Drive, Dropbox, etc
  4. Under ‘Frequency,’ select ‘Export Once’
  5. Choose ‘.zip’ as the file type and ‘2GB’ as the file size
  6. Click on ‘Create export’
  7. Download the exported file from the preferred destination that you chose in step 3
  8. Extract the game files from the .zip folder
  9. Locate your Cyberpunk 2077 files under /Takeout/Stadia/GAMING/GAME_SAVE
  10. Save those files in a separate folder and paste the folder in %userprofile%Saved GamesCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077 on your PC (provided you have the game installed on your PC)

Once you’ve followed the steps above, you can continue Cyberpunk 2077 where you left off on PC. To sync the data to a console, simply start Cyberpunk 2077 on your PC via the RedLauncher.

Make sure the cross-platform saves are enabled in the in-game Settings and load the files you’ve just imported from Takeout. Save the game again, and the data should sync with the cloud and appear on your console. Note that you need to be using the same GOG account on your PC and console.

Pokémon taps into influencer power with latest Scarlet and Violet trailer

The Pokémon Company has released a new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and it’s probably the weirdest video we’ve seen about the game so far.

The trailer stars Iono, Levincia’s Gym Leader who specializes in Electric-type Pokémon, and also doubles as an influencer. The virtual influencer has pink and blue hair with matching Magnemite. She calls them hairclips, but I totally think it’s the real Pokémon.

In the video, Levincia talks about her life as an influencer for a couple of seconds and then starts playing ‘Who’s That Pokémon,’ asking her viewers to guess her Pokémon partner.

She describes the Pokémon as having “Squishy” texture and being electric-type. Further, she says it has two bumps on its head that can be mistaken for eyes and says that it has an easygoing vibe. This doesn’t fit any current known Pokémon, so this Pokémon must be a creature native to the Paldea region, and one we haven’t seen before.

And that’s where the trailer ends. We don’t get to see the Pokémon and just get a lengthy video of the gym leader and her V-tuber personality. Hopefully, the Pokémon Company doesn’t wait long to release the second part of this trailer.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release on November 18th.

Overwatch 2 characters have already topped PornHub searches

Overwatch 2 only just launched on October 11th, but it’s already won over the… hearts of PornHub users.

As noted by Kotaku, D.Va, a returning Overwatch character with a new look in the sequel, was one of the trending searches on the porn site’s home page. When I just checked PornHub (for journalistic purposes, naturally), fellow returning hero Widowmaker shows as trending.

While Overwatch characters have always been popular on PornHub, it’s nonetheless amusing that the sequel has already garnered so much attention. It should be noted that Overwatch 2 experienced connectivity issues at launch, which developer Blizzard attributed in part to a DDoS attack, so I guess fans had to find other ways to have some Overwatch-themed fun.

Who is your favourite Overwatch character? (To play as, of course.) Let us know in the comments.

Note: Blizzard parent company Activision Blizzard is facing ongoing legal action related to reported work culture issues. Specifically, the gaming giant was accused in a July 2021 lawsuit of fostering a toxic “frat boy” culture at its U.S. studios in which many employees, particularly women, dealt with harassment, gender discrimination, unequal pay and other forms of mistreatment. Bobby Kotick, the company’s CEO, has specifically come under fire for allegedly working to cover up these reports and has faced calls to resign, yet he still leads the company. Recently, Axios reported that Activision Blizzard has also been hit with two setbacks related to its legal battle with California over these workplace misconduct allegations. While the conversation has shifted to Microsoft’s pending acquisition of the company, it’s nonetheless important to recognize what has transpired at the Call of Duty maker.

Google announces new Chromebook powered by cloud after killing Stadia

Google is announcing a brand new line of Chromebooks. The three new devices, developed in partnership with a number of manufacturers, are said to utilize the power of the cloud for gaming. News of the products come not long after the same company pulled the curtain on Stadia.

Google’s new Chromebook selection includes Acer’s Chromebook 516 GE, the Asus Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip and the Ideapad Gaming Chromebook from Lenovo. Each laptop touts high framerates and RGB keyboards. Most prominently, each new Chromebook is built for cloud gaming.

We’ve compiled a quick overview of each device. The Acer Chromebook 516 GE offers a 120Hz WQXGA display, RGB anti-ghosting keyboard, and WiFi 6E connectivity. It is also built on an Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB+ RAM.

Meanwhile, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip supports a 144Hz FHD display and is a 2-in-1 convertible laptop. Once again, this device includes an RGB anti-ghosting keyboard and an Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB+ RAM. It is paired with Harmon Kardon-certified dual speakers with WiFi 6 connectivity enabled.

Finally, the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming Chromebook supports a 120Hz WQXGA display, an RGB anti-ghosting keyboard and WiFi 6E connectivity. Additionally, it includes a 4-speaker system with Wave audio tuning plus an Intel Core i3+ processor with 8GB+ RAM.

While each device offers modest specs, it’s Google’s emphasis on cloud gaming that stands out the most. Even in the blog post, Google highlights the respectable number of games available on the cloud via the above video. Google is teaming up with Nvidia to bring its GeForce Now cloud-based gaming feature to each Chromebook. Each device is built to support Nvidia’s highest performance RTX 3080 tier. Members of the RTX 3080 tier are able to play AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite and Crysis 3 Remastered at up to 1600p @120fps.

Additionally, Google is partnering with Xbox to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to Chromebook via an installable web app to give subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate even more flexibility. Xbox Cloud Gaming supports a wide array of first-party titles and third-party games available on Xbox Game Pass.

The timing of this announcement is quite unfortunate. The performance of each Chromebook does set itself up to be a cloud-gaming workhorse. However, Google recently shuttered Stadia, its own cloud-gaming service. Had it not, the narrative of these new Chromebooks being Stadia-powered writes itself. Though, as of January 18th, 2023, Stadia and its servers will be taken offline. For those in the Google ecosystem, refunds on hardware and software will be given through the Google Play Store.

As for the new Chromebooks, each device will be available this month.
