How to watch Summer Game Fest 2022 in Canada

While E3 is cancelled this year, Canadian “The Game Awards” producer Geoff Keighley is back with his Summer Game Fest event.

Taking place on Thursday, June 12th at 11am PT/2pm ET, Summer Game Fest is set to feature a slew of trailers from various publishers. It’s expected to run between 90 minutes and two hours, and it will be followed immediately by the indie-focused “Day of the Devs” stream.

In a June 5th Twitter Spaces chat, Keighley confirmed that these would mostly be updates on previously announced games, although some brand-new titles will be shown as well.

Some of what’s confirmed to be at Summer Game Fest include Canadian games Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course (Oakville, Ontario’s Studio MDHR) and Gotham Knights (Warner Bros. Montreal), as well as Street Fighter 6 and Marvel’s Midnight Sons. Recent rumours suggest we may see God of War: Ragnarok and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima’s next game at the show, as well.

You can tune in to Summer Game Fest for free via YouTube, Twitch and Twitter.

This is just one of many gaming events this month. A round-up of all the major ones can be found here.

Halo Infinite’s online co-op is coming to Insiders in July

Sometimes it almost feels like Halo Infinite’s anticipated online co-op mode will never release, but that will soon change (I hope).

After delaying the feature several times, 343 Industries has announced its plans to test Halo Infinite’s co-op mode in July 2022 ahead of its scheduled August release. This means that select ‘Halo Insiders’ will be able to test out the game’s online co-op mode on Xbox and PC before its wider launch.

To join the Halo Insider Program for a chance to test out the beta, follow this link.

Back in late April, 343 Industries shared Halo Infinite’s roadmap for the rest of 2022. Following co-op, the following major features to hit the beleaguered title are Forge and split-screen co-op during Season 3 in November 2022.

Halo Infinite’s second season got off to a rocky start thanks to a gun-jamming glitch and the removal of skill jumps/slides. Still, to 343 Industries’ credit, the studio listened to the game’s often overly vocal community and solved the majority of Lone Wolve’s issues.

E3 to get a physical and digital show in 2023 after skipping 2022 entirely

The Electronics Entertainment Expo will return in 2023, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has reiterated.

The ESA, the gaming industry lobbying group that organizes E3, officially cancelled this year’s show in March. At the time, the ESA didn’t provide a reason for skipping this year, although it promised a “revitalized physical and digital” experience in 2023. Now, a few months later, the company maintained that E3 is happening next year in a new interview with The Washington Post.

“We’re excited about coming back in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” ESA president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post. The physical event will be held in Los Angeles as normal.

“As much as we love these digital events, and as much as they reach people and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong desire for people to convene — to be able to connect in person and see each other and talk about what makes games great.”

However, conversations surrounding E3’s relevance have been circulating for years now, particularly due to PlayStation pulling out of the 2019 show. In an age where companies can hold their own virtual events at their convenience, like PlayStation just did last week with its latest State of Play, some have argued that having to commit to an expensive physical presence in Los Angeles is unneeded. The ESA has also come under fire for leaking media’s personal information, as well as the data of members of the general public who took part in last year’s poorly received digital E3.

Given all of this, some have wondered whether the ESA was throwing in the towel, especially amid reports that the group was skipping this year’s show even before COVID cases were on the rise. All the while, the industry has carried on with its own events, particularly Summer Game Fest, which The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley has put on amid E3’s absence. When The Washington Post asked about all of these reports, Pierre-Louis simply said, “What I can tell you is that COVID has been a driving factor for anyone who conducts physical events for the past three years.”

Assuming it does indeed happen, it remains to be seen exactly what next year’s E3 will look like. It’s unclear which publishers will decide to participate, especially if there are other events vying for their attention. To that point, well-known Twitter user Nibellion tweeted that E3’s offering of a physical platform is something that other events, like Summer Game Fest, have yet to do. In response, Keighley simply tweeted with the “eye” emoji, which could be viewed as a cryptic tease of his plans. Given Keighley’s success with gaming events, it’s not hard to imagine how he might be planning of expanding the reach of Summer Game Fest, including through a potential future physical show.

For now, though, we have Summer Game Fest 2022, which kicks off on Thursday, June 9th at 11am PT/2pm ET. It’s one of many events happening this month — a full breakdown of those can be found here.

Xbox GoldenEye 007 remaster could be coming soon after Achievements spotted

A potential GoldenEye 007 remaster could be on the way after ‘Achievements’ for the game appeared on Xbox’s website.

The fully functioning page where the Achievements appeared is still available and was first discovered by insider @Wario64. The tweet reveals several detailed Achievements, hinting that the long-rumoured and often-leaked reboot of the 1997 N64 classic could be finally coming to Xbox consoles.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Microsoft has attempted to release a remake of the classic console FPS. Several years ago, an updated version of Rare’s GoldenEye 007 was reportedly supposed to release on the Xbox 360’s Live Arcade but was scrapped due to licensing issues. However, a playable version of the game leaked online back in February 2021.

More recently, the Centre of Computing History built a way to the play the iconic game’s multiplayer mode on individual screens.

As for the GoldenEye 007 Xbox remakes release, it’s still unclear when the game might be officially revealed. It’s likely Microsoft could finally show off the game during its Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase on June 12.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s next update is here and it offers what everyone’s been waiting for, voice acting.

The update is available for free on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo and brings talents from Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, Alex Cazares and more.

However, David Kaufman is back for Danny Phantom, Janet Varney has returned to voice Korra, Bill Fagerbakke will voice Patrick and more.

Alongside the voice acting, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will now feature items that players can pick up and fight with similar to Super Smash Bros.

Don’t expect Sega to make Dreamcast or Saturn mini consoles

For a while, “retro consoles” were all the rage.

First, Nintendo came out with the very popular NES and SNES Classic systems, and other companies, like Sony with its PlayStation Classic, soon followed suit.

However, if you were still holding out hope for a Dreamcast or Saturn ‘Classic’ console — well, you probably shouldn’t, according to Sega hardware producer Yosuke Okunari.

The game maker made the comments while speaking with Famitsu about the Mega Drive Mini 2, Sega’s recently unveiled retro console featuring 50 pre-installed games. During the interview, Okunari acknowledged that some people would have preferred a Dreamcast or Saturn replica, and the company even considered making them.

“Some of you may say ‘this isn’t a Sega Saturn Mini’ or ‘I wanted a Dreamcast mini’, it’s not that we didn’t think about that direction,” Okunari said.

However, he noted that the company ultimately decided not to pursue them, as “both developing and manufacturing new chipsets during the pandemic is a difficult and expensive process.”

While Okunari didn’t outright say that Sega will never produce a ‘Saturn Classic’ or ‘Dreamcast Classic,’ his comments aren’t all that hopeful. Saturn games, in particular, are notoriously difficult to emulate, and Sounari even joked that a hypothetical ‘Saturn Mini’ could cost as much as a modern-day console. Conversely, he said the Mega Drive Mini 2 was a more “manageable” product since it’s based on the existing Mini hardware.

The Mega Drive Mini 2 will release in Japan on October 27th at a cost of ¥9980 (about $95 CAD). It will include games like SlipheedSonic CDVirtua Racing and Fantasy Zone.

International pricing and availability of the console have not yet been confirmed.

What do you want to see from June’s gaming events?

Tech nerds know October (and September) as “Techtober,” a month full of tech events, but gaming geeks know that June is a month full of gaming keynotes.

However, as outlined in Brad Shankar’s round-up of June’s big gaming events, E3 is cancelled. Luckily, there are several events this month that will replace it.

With that in mind, this week’s community question is, what gaming news do you hope to see in June?

While we’ve already seen trailers for God of War: Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy, it would be great to get official release dates for both titles. My guess is that we might learn more information about the titles on June 9th during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest event.

Additionally, it would be great to see gameplay footage of Bethesda’s now-delayed Redfall. It’s likely we’ll see this info alongside information about Starfield at Xbox and Bethesda’s showcase on June 12th.

It’s been years since we’ve seen anything from Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II so hopefully, more information about this title will appear in June as well.

And while I doubt we’ll hear anything from FromSoftware, Elden Ring DLC would absolutely make this a great month for me. Oh, and last but not least, I want to learn more about the upcoming Fable reboot.

Let us know in the comments below what you’d like to see from this June’s gaming events.

When to jump into today’s Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 Collision event

Today, Fortnite is holding its Chapter 3 Season 2 Collision event. It’s been quite some time since Epic Games introduced a wider-scale event of this magnitude. These special events encourage players to jump in as the studio closes the book on another season.

This event is dubbed Collision and promises another epic-scaled battle. Similar to previous Fortnite events like the Chapter 2: Season 3 event, which saw players go toe-to-toe with Galactus, Collision sees players battle giant mechs. The one-time event will likely be offered in a special playlist.

For those keeping up with the long-running story and lore of Fortnite, Epic has been teasing Mecha Strike Commander with different parts of his body showing new features. In an ongoing puzzle, content creators have been able to piece together that the mech’s arm looks to be a run. While other parts house rockets and other armaments.

Players will likely be joined by The Seven going up against the Imagined Order once again as they use The Collider to consume The Loop.

Here is when the Fortnite Collision event begins:

North America: 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET
UK/Ire: 9pm BST
Europe: 10pm CEST / 11pm EEST
Asia/Oceania: 5am JST / 4am AWST / 6am AEST

The event concludes Chapter 3 Season 2. Following the Collision event, Fortnite will undergo some small and larger changes. New POIs will likely appear. A new Battle Pass will be available as will a shift in the meta.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 begins on June 5th.

Sega announces Mega Drive Mini 2 with 50 pre-installed games

Sega has announced the Mega Drive Mini 2 classic console. The follow-up to the original Mega Drive Mini includes 50 games spanning across Sega Genesis and Sega CD.

Sega revealed the console during a Japanese live stream held by the company. Here, Sega reveals that the Mega Drive Mini 2 is launching on October 27th in Japan. At launch, the console will cost ¥9,980 (roughly $96.05 CAD). However, Sega hasn’t discussed when international sales begin.

The 2019 Mega Drive Mini sports 42 games. However, Sega’s upcoming Mega Drive Mini 2 supports 50 titles. A few notable highlights include Sonic CD, Slipheed, and Virtua Racing. In addition, Sega includes a Mega Drive port of Fantasy Zone, which was never released on the original console. Sega also claims other arcade ports are in the works and describes them as “mysterious new work”.

The full list of games confirmed to be supported includes:

  • Silpheed (Mega CD)
  • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  • Sonic CD (Mega CD)
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  • Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  • Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
  • Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
  • Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
  • Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
  • Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
  • Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive port)

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a “Classic” console hit the market. Nintendo bootstrapped the golden era of the classic consoles. The company released the NES Classic Edition in 2016 and SNES Classic Edition the following year. PlayStation even got in on the action with the PlayStation Classic.

This wave of nostalgic mini consoles has petered out in recent years. Though, with Sega still supporting its older games by way of classic consoles, there may still be hope for a Nintendo 64 Classic Edition or something just as tantalizing.
