Devolver Digital to host Devolver Direct 2022 showcase on June 9

Devolver Digital is hosting another yearly installment of its digital showcase. To build up anticipation, the publisher has released a teaser video poking fun at the gaming industry and other digital showcases.

“It’s all about the countdown.”

This statement is said during the engaging and well-produced teaser. It harkens back to some of the more unrefined digital showcases in recent years, where promoted start times would merely lead to a drawn-out countdown timer. In the typical Devolver Digital style, the teaser is quirky and very tongue and cheek.

Most surprisingly is the appearance of Suda51, who shows up yelling “what’s up nerd?!” Best known for his work on No More Heroes, Suda51’s appearance seems to indicate that he will host the event.

As far as what will be shown, Devolver Digital confirms that Cult of the Lamb is making its appearance prior to its launch on consoles and PC. However, beyond that, the publisher likely has a few surprises in store.

The ‘Devolver Digital Marketing Countdown to Marketing’ event kicks off on June 9th at 6 PM ET/3 PM PT. It is also part of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest. You can tune in on the Twitch Gaming channel.

The “not E3” season kicked off with Sony’s recent State of Play. There is also the main Summer Game Fest event next week alongside the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. More details on the upcoming events can be found here.

PlayStation 5 sales have reached and exceeded 20 million worldwide

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 sales have reached more than 20 million units worldwide. The company also claims that it could have hit this milestone earlier but that COVID-19 continues to impact supply chain and production.

“We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally,” said Veronica Rogers, SVP, head of global sales and business operations, in a recent statement.

“Since PS5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play.”

On top of confirming that PlayStation 5 has reached 20 million in sales, Sony says production is significantly ramping up.

“We are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one.” In a recent statement, Sony claimed that the company has been able eto sell 80,000 PlayStation 5 consoles in 82 minutes.

Given Sony has sold 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles, Astro’s Playroom has also reached that milestone. Since launch, all PlayStation 5 consoles ship with Astro’s Playroom as a digital bundle.

In similar news, first-party studio Insomniac Games has revealed that its 2018 title Marvel’s Spider-Man has hit 33 million in sales. The game will arrive on PC on August 18th.

Final Fantasy XVI coming to PS5 in summer 2023

Square Enix has revealed a new trailer for its hotly anticipated Japanese role-playing game (JRPG), Final Fantasy XVI.

The trailer dropped during PlayStation’s June State of Play presentation alongside a summer 2023 release window.

In the three-minute footage, we see more of the game’s story, which follows Clive, the son of an archduke who embarks on a quest for revenge in the fantasy world of Valisthea. More of the action-RPG combat mechanics, as well as glimpses at classic Final Fantasy summons like Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut and more, are also featured.

Notably, the game is being developed by Square Enix’s ‘Creative Business Unit III,’ the team behind the critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Naoki Yoshida, the fan-favourite director of XIV, is a producer on XVI.

Fans have been waiting a long time to see XVI again. The game was originally announced during the September 2020 PlayStation   5 Showcase, with Square Enix promising that we’d see it again the following year. However, the whole year passed without a new trailer, with Yoshida confirming on December 27th that development had been delayed by about half a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next update was promised for spring 2022.

The last mainline entry in the Final Fantasy series, XV, was released in November 2016. Alongside XVI, Square Enix is also working on the sequel to 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Steam Deck dock delayed by Valve again due to supply shortages, work closures

Valve is once again delaying the launch of its Steam Deck dock. After pushing the release past the handheld’s official launch, Valve says that COVID-19 is affecting its release.

Much like the Nintendo Switch, the Valve Steam Deck is designed to be used as a handheld. However, also supports a docking station to be connected to a TV or monitor. Initially, Valve intended to launch the Steam Deck with its own docking station as a separate purchase. Upon its launch of the first orders of the Steam Deck in February, Valve pushed its launch.

Now, the company informs the community that COVID-19-related supply shortages and work stoppages have caused further delays. Unfortunately, with the latest delay, Valve isn’t providing a new release window. However, the company claims it is “working on improving the situation.”

The Steam Deck dock enables connectivity between the handheld and a display, streamlining the port access. However, outside of the official dock, there are third-party USB-C hubs and external displays. Valve itself is also open to users tapping into the power of other USB-C hubs. In fact, the company is “continuing to work on improving the docked experience.”

As far as what this means for current customers waiting for their Steam Deck order to ship, Valve claims this has no effect. Valve confirms that it’s leaning on different parts and different factories to produce the Steam Deck and its docking station. Therefore, “this has no effect on [the] production schedule and reservation windows for Steam Decks.”

BioWare confirms ‘Dragon Age 4’ title, says game isn’t coming this year

The next Dragon Age game will officially be titled Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Developer BioWare Edmonton confirmed the news in a blog post. The title refers to the character of Solas, an elven outlaw mage who was introduced in 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition.

BioWare teased his involvement in the game way back in 2018 when it teased the new Dragon Age with the hashtag “TheDreadWolfRises,” which refers to Solas’ nickname. However, BioWare says it’s not yet ready to show the antagonist in Dreadwolf.

On top of the title reveal, BioWare confirmed what many had expected: Dreadwolf will not release in 2022. A release window for Dreadwolf had never been specified, but the dripfeed of updates on the game had led to speculation that it was still a ways out.

That said, BioWare promises to share details “later this year.” Given the timing of this update — shortly before the start of the busy June gaming event period — it’s safe to assume that Dreadwolf won’t make an appearance at the likes of Summer Game Fest.

However, Gamescom’s ‘Opening Night Live’ showcase is in late August, while The Game Awards follow in December. In the past, Dragon Age updates have come at both these events, so it’s possible we might next see Dreadwolf at one of them.

In any event, there’s a lot of hype for Dreadwolf, which will be BioWare’s first new game since 2019’s Anthem. (Last year, it released the well-received remaster collection of its popular Mass Effect trilogy.) However, given the tepid response to both that game and 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda (developed by the now-defunct BioWare Montreal), all eyes are on Dreadwolf to mark a return to form for the beloved Canadian studio.

Retro game collecter suspected of selling more than $100,000 worth of forged copies of games

The retro gaming community is accusing a fairly active member of selling fake copies of classic games. Evidence has come forward to show many of the floppy disks, boxes and even art may be forgeries.

Enrico Ricciardi has been an active member of the Big Box PC Game Collectors retro game Facebook community. Ricciardi is a moderator and is a known seller of classic games. However, the community has come forward after one member received a game from Ricciardi that had more than a few discrepancies.

One member of the retro game community named Kevin purchased a copy of 1979’s Akalabeth: World of Doom from Ricciardi. This game comes from the mind of Richard Garriott. It is a rare title as it is one of the first RPGs. Upon receiving the game, Kevin began discussing his concerns with his copy with other members of the community. Together, they put together an investigation into Riccardi and found a number of games sold were fakes.

Labels for the games did not appear to be in line with the printing process from the time. At times the dirt and cosmetic markings on the labels looked as if they were printed on. Tests of some of the games conclude that no game data is on the disk. The group also accuses Ricciardi of handmaking disk labels. The retro game community believes “there is at least one black box Ultima 1 that we think may be fake that was graded by WATA.”

What’s most shocking is how long Ricciardi has been doing this and the amount of money he has earned. The group estimate that he’s been conducting “at least €100K in transactions of suspected counterfeit game items.” If correct, that equates to roughly $134,000 CAD.

Ricciardi is since banned from the retro game community. The group continues to build a case against him and urges anyone who has purchased a game to “check them very carefully.” The group also suspects that this case will result in police involvement and litigation against Ricciardi.

Here are the free games hitting PlayStation Plus in June 2022

Every month, Sony offers a few PlayStation games at no additional cost to those subscribed to its PlayStation Plus service.

Now, the company has unveiled the three games hitting PS Plus in June.

Leading this month’s lineup is God of War, the 2018 PS4 reboot of the long-running action franchise. The inclusion of this particular game is notable, as its hotly anticipated sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, is set to release later this year. This, alongside recently leaked Ragnarok slated for a September release, could suggest we may finally see more of the game soon — potentially at one of June’s big gaming events.

Additionally, the Super Smash Bros.-esque fighter Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl and anime fighter Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker — both PS4 titles — are joining the PS Plus catalogue this month.

All three games will hit PS Plus on June 7th. May’s free games will remain free until June 6th.

That’s not all for PlayStation Plus this month. The expanded version of the service, which will be a merger of PS Plus and PS Now that retains the former’s branding, will launch in North America on June 13th. The all-new PS Plus will include the service’s existing perks at the same price point while adding two extra tiers featuring hundreds more PS4 and PS5 games, streaming functionality and retro titles.

More information on that, including full pricing, can be found here.

The internet is thirsting hard for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s new professors

The Pokémon Company recently released the latest trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, revealing new Pokémon, a co-op mechanic, its November 18th launch date and most importantly, its two new professors.

Unlike previous Pokémon titles, you’ll have a different professor depending on if you play Scarlet or Violet. Professor Sada is exclusive to Scarlet and Professor Turo is exclusive to Violet. Professor Sada, whose name is short for ‘pasada’– the Spanish word for pasta — wears more prehistoric clothing à la Flintstones, whereas Professor Turo, whose name is short for ‘futuro’ — the Spanish word for future — is in gear that looks more futuristic.

While cool, what’s more interesting is the thirsty reaction on social media to the new professors — which is entirely understandable.

Below are a few notable takes on Professor Turo and Sada.

Pokémon Violet and Scarlet will release on November 18th, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.
