Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds launches on Android and iOS

Ni no Kuno: Cross Worlds, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now available on Android, iOS and PC in North America.

The game is the latest entry in the Ni no Kuni JRPG series, and it was developed by Netmarble and original Ni no Kuni maker Level-5. On top of that, Joe Hisaishi, who scored the two Ni no Kuni games as well as many Studio Ghibli films, serves as Cross Worlds’ composer.

In the game, you can choose between five playable classes: the Swordsman, Witch, Rogue, Engineer and Destroyer. All of them offer customizable appearances and unique mounts like cats and gliders. Mysterious creatures known as ‘Familiar’ can also be collected and called to battle.

Outside of traditional MMO-style combat, players can join Kingdoms to work together with other players for mutual rewards. Cross-play is also supported between mobile and PC.

Like most free-to-play games, Cross Worlds features in-app purchases for in-game currencies. It’s unclear how much grinding it requires to earn these resources through gameplay. We’ll have more on Cross Worlds in the coming days.

Elon Musk shares Elden Ring build, gets roasted because it sucks

Whether it’s sharing tasteless edgy memes, referencing Eminem in court or, really, any number of other childish actions, Elon Musk has regularly come off as an old man desperately trying to act young.

Now, the Tesla CEO has done so once again by proudly — but misguidedly — sharing his character’s build in FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.

It all started on May 22nd when Musk tweeted his adoration of the critically acclaimed open-world action-RPG. “Elden Ring, experienced in its entirety, is the most beautiful art I have ever seen,” he said.

Naturally, he quickly got questions about what character build he was running. Musk, without a shred of self-awareness, later responded with the following image:

Quickly, Twitter users noticed that something was… off.

For the uninitiated, a common mechanic in FromSoftware’s games, Elden Ring included, is your Equip Load. Basically, put on too many items and your character will run and roll quite slowly. This is known as a “Heavy Load,” and Musk’s build, with an Equip Load over 67.2/68.8, is a prime example of it.

Of course, deciding whether to prioritize power and defense over speed and agility is part of what a challenging game like Elden Ring is all about. You have to weigh the trade-offs and gear up accordingly. At first, Musk does actually seem to acknowledge this in his tweet through the caption “Equipped load will be lower if fast roll is needed.”

The problem, though, is that there’s no apparent rhyme or reason to the gear Musk had equipped. Many people rather humourously pointed this out to him. That’s because he seemingly misunderstands how equipment actually works in Elden Ring.

If you look at his build, he has two shields and a sword equipped. Cool… except for the fact that your character only actively benefits from whatever swords and/or shields that you’re currently holding. Therefore, Musk has effectively put on a second shield for no reason. It’s not even as if he was dual-wielding shields to create some sort of ultra-defensive “tank” character. He simply gains nothing from this particular build, and is just adding extra weight and encumbering his character instead.

Given that managing Equip Load is such a core principle of Elden Ring (and other FromSoftware games), it’s amusing to see Musk self-own himself by sharing such a wonky build.

While Musk didn’t respond to any of the replies — or multiple news stories that have since been written — pointing any of this out, he did most recently share an updated image of his character’s stats.

Musk probably thinks that the image, which shows a Level 121 character, is “proof” of his gamer cred. Anything to try to distract everyone from the recent sexual harassment allegations made against him or his Twitter takeover drama, right?

Elden Ring is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Some of the new PlayStation Plus’ full-game trials are as long as five hours

The all-new PlayStation Plus just launched in Asia, which has been giving users around the world a bit more insight into individual aspects of the service.

First, it was PS Plus’ inferior emulation, and now, it’s some extra clarity on how game trials work. Essentially, those subscribed to PS Plus Premium ($21.99 CAD/month, $59.99/three months, $139.99/12 months) can get full-game, timed-limited trials for select games, which vary depending on the title.

Interestingly, PlayStation and its partners have given consideration to the fact that some games are bigger than others and are offering longer demos accordingly. For example, as spotted by Twitter user PSVortexHorizon Forbidden West and Cyberpunk 2077 have five-hour trials, versus the two-hour demos offered for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection and WWE 2K22.

This makes sense considering Horizon and Cyberpunk are both open-world games that take dozens of hours to complete. It’s currently unclear, though, if five hours is the max amount of time PS Plus trials will ever offer. On the flip side, all games over a certain price point (going forward, not retroactively) are reportedly required by Sony to offer a demo.

To further entice players, PlayStation is also allowing you retain all trophy and save game progress from the trial, so you can pick up where you left off should you buy the game.

The new PlayStation Plus is set to launch on June 13th in North America. More information can be found here.

Avalanche wants you to feel like a true wizard with the PS5 DualSense in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy studio Avalanche Software has outlined how the use of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense can put you in the wizarding world. Ahead of its Holiday 2022 launch, the WB Games-owned studio has released new details on the game’s immersion.

Hogwarts Legacy brings players into the halls of the franchise’s most iconic location, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this prequel tale, players attend classes and become true wizards or witches. Of course, this means having a wand by your side and casting a plethora of spells. Avalanche Software describes how the DualSense can make every spell feel unique to the player.

In a PlayStation blog post, community manager Chandler Wood confirms that Hogwarts Legacy utilizes the DualSense’s adaptive triggers. Much like we’ve seen in previous PlayStation 5 games, players will feel the resistance in the trigger when casting a spell. “You’ll feel the magical resistance at your fingertips through every spell, whether firing off a basic cast or summoning the strength,” the post reads. We’ve seen similar innovations in games when players fire a weapon or pull the drawstring of a bow and arrow.

Likewise, Hogwarts Legacy also features haptic feedback of the DualSense. Wood confirms that when casting the Protego spell, the sizzling of the magic is felt across the DualSense. The same goes when magic is reflected and absorbed by the Shield Charm in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy not only reserves the DualSense’s feedback for combat. The game uses the DualSense during a variety of events in the world. One of which is during Potions class. As students go through an academic year in Hogwarts, players attend classes. During Potions class, the DualSense reacts when combing ingredients with a mortar and pestle. Players also feel the feedback when flying on a broom or on the magical hippogriff.

Additionally, the DualSense offers some personalization through your time at Hogwarts. The controller emits the house colours via the light. Griffindor’s scarlet and gold colours shine, while Slytherin reserves green and silver. Hufflepuff students see yellow and black, while blue and bronze is for the Ravenclaw house.

Aside from DualSense features, Wood outlines some of what the PlayStation 5 hardware offers when playing Hogwarts Legacy. The game provides players with the choice of Fidelity and Performance graphics modes. The game also supports Tempest 3D AudioTech for immersion from an audio perspective. Plus, the SSD provides fast loading speeds when fast travelling via the Floo Network.

As a fan of the Harry Potter franchise, Hogwarts Legacy is a game that is shaping up to be something special. However, the game comes with a lot of baggage due to Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. In recent years, the author has made numerous remarks regarding the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, Rowling has shown a pattern of publically making transphobic remarks. These problematic views continually need addressing when discussing the game. It’s become a complex topic, and thankfully, many members of the community have provided insightful stances on the matter.

Reggie Fils-Aime highlights why Nintendo was so behind in supporting online play

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently divulged new information on his experiences during his tenure at Nintendo. During an interview, Fils-Aime elaborated on why Nintendo struggled to support online play.

When speaking with the GeekWire podcast, Fils-Aime touched on the matter of online multiplayer. The former president cited the company’s interest in “doing things differently” as well as hesitation to bring something new to the table. Fils-Aime touches on how Nintendo pushed firmly for couch co-op throughout the generations and into the days of the Wii. Following that, it was clear online multiplayer was adopted en masse by competitors. However, Nintendo once again wanted to do its own thing.

“In order to do online multiplayer, the company really needed to think about what’s the new type of game, what are the different types of experiences that we’re gonna need to create in order to now excel in that form of play.” Fils-Aime continues, “And candidly, it took the company a while to think that through, to come up with something that they believed would be fundamentally different and add value in a new way. I would argue the company’s core success started with their taking Smash Bros. – a key franchise for them – taking that online, which did exceptionally well.”

Super Smash Bros. is a major player in Nintendo’s online catalogue. It continues to be a standout success for building online infrastructure, especially in a competitive landscape. In addition, in 2015, Nintendo introduced Splatoon. These two tentpole franchises are said to be at the core of Nintendo’s decision to take online more seriously.

However, Fils-Aime also states a cultural reason for Nintendo’s slower adoption. “Culturally, the company didn’t see a huge opportunity in online. It was an area that the Americas and Europe constantly were trying to educate the company in Japan about the value of online play, investing in the online infrastructure which needed to be done in order for the experience to be a positive one.”

Nintendo supports online play through the Nintendo Switch Online service. However,  the infrastructure still pales in comparison to Microsoft and Sony. Though, Nintendo could make plenty of improvements. Many players quickly point out the mandatory party chat support through a mobile app. There’s also the smaller yet the vocal percentage of players that want to see some sort of Achievement system brought to the table. However, both the Switch and the Nintendo Online mobile app are receiving quality-of-life changes on a near regular basis.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now streaming on Paramount+ in Canada

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has begun streaming on Paramount+ in Canada.

While we knew that the Sega video game adaptation would be available on the service in the U.S. on May 24th, given its 45-day theatrical exclusivity, it wasn’t previously clear where it would stream in Canada. A Paramount+ subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

In the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic allies with a crafty fox named Tails to face off once more against the evil Dr. Robotnik, who has enlisted the dangerous Knuckles the Echidna.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was once again directed by Jeff Fowler and features returning cast members Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden (Tom), Newmarket, Ontario’s own Jim Carrey (Robotnik), Tika Sumpter (Maddie) and Canadian-raised Lee Majdoub (Stone). Meanwhile, Idris Elba voices Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessy reprises her fan-favourite role of Tails from the Sonic video games. It’s also worth noting that much of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was shot in Vancouver, just like the first film.

Since its release in early April, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed more than $375 million USD (about $482.5 million CAD) worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game film to date. Paramount is currently developing a third Sonic film, as well as a Paramount+ spin-off series focused on Elba’s Knuckles.

On the video game front, Sega is set to release the Sonic Origins remaster collection next month and the mysterious open-world title Sonic Frontiers later this year.

New PlayStation Plus running inferior versions of classic PlayStation games

One of the big selling points of Sony’s all-new PlayStation Plus is that it offers retro games from the original PlayStation, as well as the PS2, PSP and PS3 eras.

However, following the expanded service’s launch in Japan, users have discovered that inferior versions of PS1 games are what’s actually being emulated.

As first spotted by random PS Plus subscribers and later confirmed by VideoGamesChronicle, games like Ape Escape are based on their “PAL” versions. PAL refers to a video format used in Europe and Australia that runs at 50Hz compared to the 60Hz offered in the “NTSC” versions in Canada and the U.S. The PAL versions suffered from slower speeds, reduced video quality and, in some cases, intrusive borders at the top and bottom of the screen. These issues will likely be even more pronounced now for many users, as TVs in the ’90s at least ran at 50Hz, while the refresh rate on modern displays is higher.

See the below video for how Ape Escape fares on both NTSC and PAL:

Interestingly, though, this issue doesn’t apply to every game in the PS Plus catalogue. While Ape EscapeWorms World Party and Worms Armageddon are the PAL versions, other titles, including Tekken 2Syphon Filter and Abe’s Oddysee, are based on the NTSC versions.

In any event, this isn’t the first time that PlayStation has used the PAL versions for emulation. The company’s much-maligned PlayStation Classic also featured the PAL versions of games when it launched in 2018.

It should be noted, however, that PlayStation hasn’t confirmed the full list of retro games for PS Plus in North America. It’s not uncommon for services like this to have catalogues that vary slightly per region, so it’s possible that some titles that will be offered here will be both different and based on their NTSC versions.

For now, these are the confirmed original PlayStation games:

  • Ape Escape | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Hot Shots Golf | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • I.Q. Intelligent Qube | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Jumping Flash! | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Mr. Driller | Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Original PlayStation
  • Syphon Filter | Bend Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Tekken 2 | Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Original PlayStation
  • Worms World Party | Team 17, Original PlayStation
  • Worms Armageddon | Team17, Original PlayStation

The full list of confirmed PS Plus games so far can be found here.

The expanded service is set to launch in Canada and the U.S. on June 13th. A full breakdown of pricing and membership tiers is available here.
