Sony unleashes Clawstrider in downtown Toronto to celebrate Horizon Forbidden West’s launch

To celebrate the launch of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West, Sony Interactive Entertainment has set up a Clawstrider in Maple Leaf Square, Toronto. The installation will be set up until March 4.

In Horizon Forbidden West, players experience the latest journey of Aloy as she explores the post-apocalyptic west coast on a mission to save the remaining population. Along the way, Aloy encounters many dangerous machines, including the fast and deadly Clawstrider.

For the next two weeks, fans can travel down to Maple Leaf Square and check out the statue. It’s certainly not hard to miss as it stands at 11.5 feet tall.

The installation is quite fitting. Maple Leaf Square is colloquially referred to as Jurassic Park as it’s the home of the Toronto Raptors. Outside of the pandemic, hundreds of fans will commonly gather and cheer outside the Scotiabank Arena. Now, Jurassic Park is home to one of HEPHAESTUS’ creations.

If you’re unable to make it into Toronto to see the Horizon Forbidden West installation, PlayStation Canada’s Twitter account dropped a little video to check out.

Toronto isn’t the only location a Clawstrider has set up a temporary shop. In addition, Sony has delivered a statue in Dubai, Sydney Moscow, Seoul Warsaw, Madrid, Berlin, New York City, and San Francisco.

Horizon Forbidden West is currently available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. SIE is partnering with WWF-Canada and donating $1 from each copy sold in Canada.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Patch 1.5 adds spicy texts and other new romance options

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) added a ton of tweaks and enhancements to Cyberpunk 2077 via Patch 1.5. On top of highly requested features like 60FPS and new customization features, romance options will now send lewd messages to players.

Players have begun to receive messages from romance options in Cyberpunk 2077. In one instance, a player received a bathroom selfie from Panam with a text reading, “What are you up to? I’m just about to step into the shower, thinking of you…:*” As Cyberpunk 2077 offers dialogue options, players can choose to respond with either “Feelin dirty, huh? Think there’s room for two…?” or “Panaaaam. I can tell you’re bored.”

This is just one core example of the subtle changes made to Cyberpunk 2077 in regard to romance options. The game also supports new text chat options, voice messages, and the ability to sleep next to the NPC. Another player recounts their experience sleeping next to Judy.

These new additions aren’t only relegated to the romance between the player and female options. Both Kerry and River, two male options, also support new romantic flair. It’s said Kerry sends the player a gift. River, on the other hand, swings by V’s apartment for some sweet hangs.

Overall, they all seem to be fairly light in terms of content and impact. However, it does demonstrate the ways CDPR is expanding on romance within Cyberpunk 2077. In fact, it’s fairly subtle in its execution. During my own personal time toying around with the update, I was more fixated on the new performance options and the ability to rent new apartments.

CDPR has previously given a roadmap for Cyberpunk 2077. On top of adding current-gen enhancements, free DLC is expected at some point in the future.

Halo TV series to begin streaming on Paramount+ Canada on March 24

The long-awaited Halo TV series will premiere in Canada exclusively on Paramount+ on March 24th, Paramount has confirmed.

This is the same date that the show drops on Paramount+ in the U.S. For some time, it was unclear whether the series would come to Paramount+ in Canada, given that the service has a far thinner catalogue than its U.S. counterpart.

It’s been a long time coming for the show, which has been in development hell for several years. Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg’s production company, is co-producing the series, with Xbox-owned Halo developer 343 Industries consulting.

The series isn’t intended to be canon or a direct adaptation of the iconic sci-fi shooter games, 343 has said.

Halo stars Ymir, B.C.’s Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Natasha McElhone as Dr. Catharine Halsey, Charlie Murphy as Makee, Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky, Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066 and Jennifer Taylor as the voice of Cortana (reprising her role from the games).

In related news, Paramount has revealed that the show has already been renewed for a second season.

-Thanks, Sachin

There are now more than 500 million Epic Games accounts: Epic

Epic Games has revealed that users have created more than 500 million Epic Games accounts.

The company didn’t reveal any further details, so it’s unclear how many people are actively using their accounts and buying games.

For years, Epic has been trying to position the Epic Games Store as a competitor to Steam through initiatives like lower revenue cuts from developers, free games and exclusives. The company has also acquired studios like Psyonix (Rocket League) and Mediatonic (Fall Guys).

However, it’s unclear exactly how well those efforts have been paying off. Based on findings from the Epic v. Apple trial, we know that Epic had racked up $330 million USD (about $418.6 million CAD) in unrecouped costs in 2020 alone from compensating companies for offering their free EGS games.

Of course, Epic isn’t hurting by any stretch. Fortnite alone continues to print money, while countless companies license its Unreal Engine platform. With respect to that latter point, Epic says nearly 50 percent of announced “next-gen” games (presumably meaning PS5/Xbox Series X and S) are being developed with its engine. Non-gaming properties like The Mandalorian also use Unreal Engine.

As well, Epic confirmed that more than six million people have downloaded the free “next-gen” Matrix Awakens experience, which was a tech demo for Unreal Engine 5.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Live to launch in Canada first

The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Trading Card Game Live will launch a public beta exclusively in Canada across desktop and mobile.

Trading Card Game Live players will be able to collect cards and battle other players. Codes for virtual cards will be distributed through real Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) card packs.

“Similar to the tabletop version of the Pokémon TCG that fans have loved for over 25 years, Pokémon TCG Live features fan-favourite activities like building decks and battling with friends, as well as gameplay modes and daily quests for all types of players regardless of their skill level,” writes The Pokémon Company in a recent blog post.

The card game’s beta will only be available to Canadian players on iOS and Android. Strangely, the title isn’t coming to the Switch. It’s unclear when the final version of this new virtual take on TCG will release.

Nintendo shutting down Wii U and 3DS eShops, dealing big blow to preservation

Nintendo has confirmed that it will be shutting down its Wii U and 3DS eShops in late March 2023.

This means that you won’t be able to make any digital purchases — including downloads of free titles and demos — on these systems after that period. However, Nintendo says previously purchased content will remain available to redownload.

While it’s not exactly surprising that digital storefronts for old, discontinued hardware are being closed, the bigger issue here relates to game preservation. That’s because these eShops offered large catalogues of older titles from the likes of the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and DS eras — not to mention actual Wii U and 3DS titles.

With these stores shutting down, Nintendo’s only solution is its Switch Online, which offers a selection of titles from the NES, SNES and N64. However, these catalogues are far smaller; they lack Game Boy and DS titles and miss such classics as Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario RPG (SNES).

Further, they’re locked behind a subscription service, so there’s no way to actually own the games. (To be sure, one may argue the legitimacy of “ownership” of a digitally purchased title, but regardless, the Switch offers no option to buy individual NES, SNES or N64 titles.)

Making this even worse is that Nintendo says it “currently [has] no plans to offer classic content in other ways.” The closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops wouldn’t be as much of an issue if Nintendo was going to make those older titles available on the Switch, but evidently, that’s not in the cards. This is despite the fact that the Switch has a user base that’s now larger than the 3DS and Wii U’s combined.

The company even addressed the issue of game preservation in a since-deleted, decidedly tone-deaf FAQ:

“Once it is no longer possible to purchase software in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, many classic games for past platforms will cease to be available for purchase anywhere. Will you make classic games available to own some other way? If not, then why? Doesn’t Nintendo have an obligation to preserve its classic games by continually making them available for purchase?

Across our Nintendo Switch Online membership plans, over 130 classic games are currently available in growing libraries for various legacy systems. The games are often enhanced with new features such as online play.

We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise.

We currently have no plans to offer classic content in other ways.”

It’s another failure on Nintendo’s part to ensure game preservation, an issue with which the industry as a whole already struggles. While many classic films and TV shows remain accessible on home media and streaming services, it’s regularly harder to play older video games. This has led fans to turn to piracy to play games that companies like Nintendo are otherwise not making available through any modern platform.

Nintendo’s stance looks even worse when compared to main competitors Xbox and PlayStation. The Microsoft-owned gaming label has been the biggest proponent for game preservation as of late, making many popular original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles available on Xbox One and Series X/S.

While PlayStation’s offerings aren’t quite as flexible, the company does still offer some PS2 titles for purchase alongside a larger PS3 catalogue through its PlayStation Now streaming service. The company is also reportedly planning an expanded subscription service, codenamed Spartacus, for early 2022 that will offer PS1, PS2 and PSP titles. This is all on top of continuing to operate its PS3 and PS Vita storefronts following fan outcry over plans to shut them down.

Valve’s portable Steam Deck is more repairable than you think

Though Valve initially informed Steam Deck buyers that repairing the handheld console themselves likely isn’t a great idea, that might not entirely be the case.

Teardown experts iFixit dismantled a production Steam Deck to confirm that the portable is actually pretty easy to repair — at least for the most part. The device opens easily, features clear white labels on most major components and is even pretty modular, allowing you to fix or replace components without taking the entire Steam Deck apart.

For example, the SSD can be replaced with one screw, thumbsticks easily pop out and even the display just requires a suction cup and minor heat to remove. That said, iFixit also says that replacing the Steam Deck’s battery is a “rough” process and that its USB-C port/microSD card slot are attached directly to its motherboard.

“But, we also found a lot to like. The opening procedure is simple and straightforward; there’s above-average modularity for most components; and you only need one Phillips screwdriver for all your repairs,” writes iFixit in its blog post regarding the Steam Deck’s repair process. “The storage solution here outclasses a lot of current laptops. Overall the Steam Deck nets a 7 out of 10 on our repairability scale.”

iFixit says that it will sell official Steam Deck replacement parts on its website. Valve’s Steam Deck starts at $449 and is expected to start shipping towards the end of February.

Netflix is making a BioShock movie

Netflix and Take-Two Interactive are working on a BioShock movie.

However, beyond that the film is coming, nothing else is known about the movie. In fact, the project doesn’t even have a writer or director yet, though the partnership between the two companies has been in the works for almost a year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Though it’s a running joke on the MobileSyrup team that I’m not a big fan of the BioShock series despite what my glowing preview coverage of BioShock Infinite from several years might indicate (thanks for deleting it from the internet, Postmedia), the first entry in the series remains one of the most critically acclaimed first-person shooters of all time.

However, this isn’t the first time a Bioshock film has surfaced. Roughly 12 years ago, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was tied to a movie based on the series. It’s also worth noting that films based on video games rarely end up being even close to as good as their video game counterparts, with Detective Pikachu and the Sonic The Hedgehog movie being two recent exceptions.

That said, a Bioshock movie could be one of the few to buck this long-running trend.
