Nintendo resurrects motion controls with Switch Sports

In what seems like an effort to recapture the magic of mid-2000s pop culture phenomenon, Wii Sports, Nintendo has revealed a Switch version of the title called — you guessed it — Switch Sports.

Sports set to be part of the title include the following: Tennis, Bowling, Chambara (it looks like a Sword fighting game), Badminton, Volleyball and Soccer.

During its Direct presentation, Nintendo outlined that the game features both local and online play. Further, later this summer an update will add leg strap accessory support to soccer, followed by a golf update in the fall.

Nintendo says that it plans to launch an Online Playtest of the title that runs from February 18th to the 20th.

Switch Sports will release on April 29th.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster coming to mobile and PC on February 23

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will release in North America on Android, iOS and Steam on February 23rd.

A February window had been given last year following a delay, although this is the first confirmation of a specific launch date.

Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster series takes the first six Final Fantasy games from the NES and SNES eras and gives them a visual update. Specifically, the games feature updated pixel character designs from Kazuko Shibuya, the original Final Fantasy pixel artist.

Other enhancements include a rearranged soundtrack overseen by original Final Fantasy VI composer Nobuo Uematsu, auto-battle options and a bestiary.

The first five Pixel Remasters all launched on mobile and Steam last year. Square Enix hasn’t yet confirmed any console releases.

Originally released on the SNES in 1994, Final Fantasy VI tells the story of a young girl with mysterious powers named Terra as she gets swept up in a rebellion against a ruthless empire. VI is widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever made, making the Pixel Remaster release particularly exciting for fans.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will cost $23.99 CAD in Canada on Steam, although a 20 percent pre-order discount is currently being offered. A bundle that includes all six games is also available for $99.78, which offers a 22 percent discount.

On mobile, the game is priced at $24.99 on Android and iOS.

Latest PS4 and PS5 beta now rolling out to select participants

A new PS4 and PS5 beta is now rolling out to select participants in Canada, the U.S., Japan, U.K., Germany and France.

Additionally, participants in the U.S. and U.K. can now preview a feature that enables voice commands for finding and opening games, apps and controlling media playback.

If you aren’t selected for this beta, the full update will launch globally later this year. Here’s what the beta includes:

Party Chat Update

When you start a party, you can select whether to create an open or closed party. An open party lets friends see and join a party without an invite, and friends of party members can also join. A closed party is only for players you invite. Open and Closed parties were already a feature, but now you don’t have to go into any menus to start them.

There’s also now a voice chat reporting feature, so if you want to report something that someone said, there are now visual indicators for you to identify who was speaking.

Additionally, in the PS5 beta, you can start a Share Play directly from the voice chat card; this means you don’t need to start Share Screen first to use Share Play.

On the PS4 beta, you can individually adjust the voice of each player in a party, similar to PS5.

Voice chats are also called ‘Parties’ again, and the Game Base menu is now divided into three tabs: ‘Friends,’ ‘Parties,’ and ‘Messages.’

Two other Game Base updates include an “on-air” icon when someone is sharing their screen and a button that will let users quickly decline a friend request.

New PS5 UI Features

Beta participants will now be able to filter their game collection by genre. You can also choose up to five games or apps to keep on the home screen by selecting “Keep in Home” with the options button. However, you can also keep up to a total of 14 games and apps on your home screen.

There’s now a new trophies UI update that shows a cool visual design of trophy cards on the trophy list and sees suggestions for which trophies you can earn on the trophy tracker.

You can also start the Share Screen from the Create menu and stream your gameplay to an open party.

Accessibility features

There are new accessibility features, including a screen reader, which reads aloud on-screen text and spoken guidance for operating the console. Additionally, there’s now mono audio for headphones instead of a stereo or 3D audio sound mix. This should provide a better experience for players with unilateral hearing loss.

You can also show a checkmark on enabled settings so you can see which settings are turned out.

Ubisoft to release smaller, stealth-driven Assassin’s Creed in 2022 or 2023: report

Ubisoft is developing an Assassin’s Creed game that’s “smaller in scope” than the series’ recent entries, according to Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier.

The game, codenamed “Rift,” is said to be a repurposed expansion to Ubisoft Montreal’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which was originally released in 2020. The game will star standout Valhalla character Basim and won’t feature a massive open-world like Valhalla or 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, according to Bloomberg. Instead, the game will reportedly focus on stealth gameplay and is set for release in late 2022 or early 2023. Specific platforms weren’t mentioned, but given that Valhalla is a cross-gen title, it seems likely that Rift will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S alongside PC.

Rift is a separate project from codenamed “Assassin’s Creed Infinity,” a live service title that Ubisoft confirmed last year with scant details.

Eurogamer, which corroborated Bloomberg‘s report, provided a few additional details, noting that the game is set in Baghdad and will feature a setting similar in size to one of Valhalla‘s “smaller individual map regions.” Eurogamer adds that Rift is expected to explore Basim’s story prior to the events of Valhalla.

All told, these are notable changes for the series, which originally started as more stealth-driven before becoming more of an action-RPG in the vein of The Witcher 3. While reception to Valhalla was generally quite positive, a recurring criticism was that the game — which can take 60 hours for the main story alone — was quite bloated. Otherwise, the smaller Assassin’s Creed games came in the form of ‘2.5D’ titles in the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles subseries, which were released between 2015 and 2016.

The reason for this pivot, per Bloomberg, is for Ubisoft to fill out a “thin” release schedule. The publisher games lineup has taken a hit due to employee departures and major game delays. With respect to the former, various Ubisoft developers have been exiting the company over the company’s alleged toxic work culture at several studios, including Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto. While Ubisoft let go a number of accused individuals while promising to make cultural changes, employees have reported that little has actually improved since.

Nintendo’s next Direct stream is set for Feb. 9

Nintendo has revealed that its next Direct streaming event is set for Wednesday, Feb 9th at 5pm ET/2pm PT.

The stream is expected to offer a look at new Switch titles headed to Nintendo’s console in the first half of 2022. As always, the event will be streamed on Nintendo’s YouTube channel.

It’s likely that the stream will offer a look at Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which releases on March 25th, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which drops this coming Spring. The event will also likely offer a glimpse of Triangle Strategy given it drops on March 4th.

Though slightly less likely, we could also get a new look at The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3 and Splatoon 3. That said, it’s worth noting that none of those titles have specific release dates yet.

MobileSyrup will have more on Nintendo’s upcoming direct tomorrow.
