The New York Times acquires Wordle, says it will remain free for everyone

The New York Times has acquired the massively popular online word puzzle game Wordle.

In a press release, the company said the deal is valued at “an undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.”

Currently, the game is available for free via browsers, although The New York Times Company says it will eventually move over to The New York Times‘ website. When it does, though, it will remain free-to-play for everyone, according to the company.

When American software engineer Josh Wardle first released Wordle in October 2021, the game had only reached 90 players by November. However, 300,000 people played it nearly two months later, with millions of daily players diving in now.

The game gives you six chances to guess a five-letter word using hot-or-cold-like coloured hints. One new puzzle is released every day, making it something of a fun, short daily routine for players. Wordle also lets you post your results in a solution-free way to social media so you and your friends can compare.

While Wordle‘s new owner might initially seem surprising, Wardle says it “feels very natural,” given that the “New York Times Games play a big part in [Wordle‘s] origins.” In addition to confirming that the game will remain free-to-play, Wardle said he’s working with The New York Times Company to “make sure your wins and streaks will be preserved.”

This isn’t today’s only game-related acquisition news; PlayStation also revealed plans to buy Destiny developer Bungie for $3.6 billion USD (about $4.6 billion CAD).

Sony’s MLB The Show 22 coming to Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch in April

PlayStation has confirmed that its MLB The Show 22 baseball game is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one when it launches on April 5th.

In addition to the base Xbox Game Pass service for Xbox consoles, MLB The Show 22 will come to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s Cloud Gaming on that date, making it available for streaming on mobile devices and in browsers. Last year’s MLB The Show 21 also launched on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

In case you missed it, the historically PlayStation-exclusive franchise went multi-platform last year following a revised licensing deal with MLB. As part of this new arrangement, MLB The Show 22 will also launch on Nintendo Switch on April 5th, marking the series’ debut on a Nintendo platform. What’s more, cross-play, saves and progression will be supported between PlayStation 4/5, Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch.

All of these announcements came during a reveal event in New York’s Times Square in which Los Angeles Angels player Shohei Ohtani was confirmed to be MLB The Show 22‘s cover athlete.

PlayStation to acquire ‘Destiny’ developer Bungie for $3.6 billion

Sony has announced plans to acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion USD (about $4.6 billion CAD).

Bungie is the studio best known for Xbox’s original Halo games and, in recent years, the Destiny series.

In a press release, Sony confirmed that Bungie will remain “an independent subsidiary” of the company. Current Bungie CEO and chairman Pete Parsons will continue to lead the developer alongside the rest of the studio’s management team. Further, Sony says Bungie will have the option “to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play.”

Adding to that, Parsons said the following of the acquisiton:

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games,” he said. “We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.”

As it stands, Bungie is continuing to support Destiny 2 as well as other Destiny-related projects and new, yet-to-be-revealed IP. While it seems safe to assume that Destiny will remain multiplatform (at least to some capacity), it remains to be seen whether future Bungie titles might become PlayStation exclusive.

The Bungie deal is the latest in a string of high-profile gaming acquisitions. Earlier this month, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive announced plans to purchase Farmville maker Zynga for $12.7 billion USD (about $16.1 billion CAD). At the time, that was believed to be the biggest-ever acquisition of a gaming studio, but that didn’t last long. One week later, Microsoft revealed that it will purchase Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard for a staggering $68.7 billion USD (about $82.7 billion CAD).

Apple might be poaching Xbox engineers, possibly to build a console

The latest and greatest in Apple rumours with a capital ‘R’ is that the company is gearing up to make a play in the video game console space.

The reports come from a conversation on the moderately popular Xbox Two podcast where Windows Central writer Jez Corden shared that he’s heard rumours of Apple poaching Xbox engineers to help make an Apple console.

He clarifies that there isn’t much sourcing on the rumour so take it with a grain of salt. The engineers, if being poached, could also be used to work on a VR or AR device or any other kind of project Apple has hidden away on its campus.

I’d also be skeptical of this rumour since Apple historically hasn’t been big into gaming, regardless of what you want to call Apple Arcade. However, with the computing power the company is packing into its new laptops and phones, perhaps stealing some Xbox team members to help Apple get a foot in the PC gaming space would be a smarter use of Apple’s time.

We’ve all seen that with Stadia, it’s incredibly difficult to entice both developers and players to a new gaming platform. I imagine that Apple has also learned this with Apple Arcade. The company could skip half of this line by building better Windows/Xbox game translation code for the Mac, thus only needing to entice developers to move their games to Mac since millions of Mac users have gaming-capable machines.

We also know that console makers like Sony and Xbox sell consoles at a loss and make up the money on the back end with game and accessory sales, plus monthly subscription costs. Suppose Apple could still make this back-end money by selling more games on Mac and selling Apple gaming accessories. In that case, it makes less sense to me that the company would invest millions into console development.

Apple would be wise to move into gaming but I think making it a value-add to the tech giant’s computers rather than trying to sell a console would make more sense with the company’s existing public products and strategies. All of that being said, the company has surprised us in the past, and we’re expecting it to move into new markets like AR, VR, and automotive, so gaming wouldn’t be the biggest stretch.
