Fan-made The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time PC port is 90 percent done

A group of dedicated fans is nearing completion on a PC port of the iconic Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Speaking to VideoGamesChronicle, the group, dubbed ‘Harbour Masters,’ said the port is about 90 percent finished and could release in mid-February. The port will be fully moddable, and Harbour Masters has a roadmap for features like 60fps support.

While Nintendo is known for being one of the more litigious companies, having taken down many fan projects, Harbour Masters’ Ocarina of Time should be safe. That’s because the reverse-engineering work that the team is doing is legal; it doesn’t use any leaked content or original copyrighted assets.

Currently, the only way to play Ocarina of Time on a modern system is through the Nintendo Switch’s Expansion Pack premium service, which starts at $63.99 CAD/year. This emulated version suffered from some technical issues at launch, although eagle-eyed fans noticed over the past week that Nintendo has quietly updated it to improve performance. Otherwise, you’d have to find an old Nintendo 3DS to play a remastered version of Ocarina of Time.

You can read more on Harbour Masters’ work on bringing Ocarina of Time to PC here.

Clone of acclaimed indie game Unpacking tops App Store, then gets removed

One of last year’s most acclaimed indie games was Unpacking, a relaxing puzzler about piecing together the protagonist’s life by emptying their boxes and figuring out where to put their boxes.

Naturally, then, some jerks had to shamelessly copy it. As Unpacking developer Witch Beam shared on Twitter, a title that looked virtually identical to its own was making the rounds on the App Store and Google Play.

The clone, titled Unpacking Master, was published by a company called Cypress-based SayGames. It was free to download with ads, although these could be removed for a one-time $4.99 USD (about $6.32 CAD).

Per the Brisbane, Australia-based Witch Beam, promotion on TikTok and Instagram led many people to discover the knock-off. “While we’ve seen many imitators already, usually they don’t get much traction,” the developer explained.

The clone got so much attention, in fact, that it briefly topped the App Store charts. Shortly after, the game was removed from the App Store, with the Google Play version following suit. Witch Beam then thanked fans on Twitter for their support.

SayGames, meanwhile, apologized to Witch Beam via a January 25th statement to Kotaku. “I’d like to apologize for our lack of research prior to launching the game from one of the developers we work with,” the publisher said. “The game clearly resembles Unpacking and this resemblance goes way beyond the game title. We messed up and we apologize.”

The publisher went on to say it’s been “in touch with Witch Beam to discuss how we can resolve this.” Given how blatantly similar Unpacking Master is to Unpacking (down to the nearly identical titles), it’s hard to believe SayGames that this was accidental.

In any event, it’s no doubt little consolation to Witch Beam.

“It’s demoralising for a small team like ours to see content we spent literally years planning, refining and handcrafting be hastily reproduced in an opportunistic ad-riddled app a mere 3 months after our launch,” Witch Beam tweeted on January 24th.

“We’re a tiny indie team and even with the success we have achieved, we still don’t have the resources to pursue companies trying to use our game’s distinct look and feel to make a quick buck. We have to rely on storefronts like the App Store to better curate their content.”

The Unpacking debacle comes mere weeks after the App Store played host to a variety of since-removed clones of Josh Wardle’s popular word puzzle game, Wordle. One of these even came from a New York-based developer who publicly boasted on Twitter about how he blatantly ripped off Wardle’s game

In both cases, Apple quietly removed the clones without making any public statement. Hopefully, the company updates its App Store policies to better protect creators.

For now, you can purchase the real Unpacking (which is a lovely little game!) on Steam, GOG, Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles (including Game Pass) for $22.79 to $25.99 CAD, depending on the platform.

Valve says the Steam Deck will now launch on February 25

Valve has confirmed that its Steam Deck handheld PC will go on sale starting February 25th.

This lines up with the February window the company had promised last year when the system was delayed out of the holiday season.

In a Steam blog post, the company says customers who have reserved the system will be sent emails after 10am PT/1pm ET on that date. Upon receiving the email, you’ll then have 72 hours to place their order. Otherwise, their reservation will be released to the next person in the queue.

Valve says the first units will then be shipped to customers starting on the 28th, with subsequent order email batches being set out on a weekly basis. Therefore, if you’ve reserved the Steam Deck but aren’t in the first wave of people on the 25th, you should stay tuned during March for an email.

It’s worth noting that Valve says the review embargo for the Steam Deck also lifts on February 25th, should you be waiting to hear more hands-on impressions before buying.

The Steam Deck starts at $499 CAD in Canada and goes up to $819 depending on the bundle. However, new reservations (at the time of writing) for the device aren’t expected to ship until “after Q2 2022,” per Steam.

Nintendo fans make Studio Ghibli inspired Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer

Two Nintendo fans have released a Ghibli-inspired fan trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Self-proclaimed “Nintendo fangirls” Channy and Kimberly have shared their version of the Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer that bears a resemblance to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke.

This is only a 57-second video that features its own custom Studio Ghibli logo with Snorlax and Hisuian Growlithe instead of the spirit Totoro. The trailer also shows the protagonist riding on a Wyrdeer, similar to Ashitaka riding his loyal red elk Yakul.

Nintendo Switch Online update improves Zelda: Ocarina of Time performance

Along with adding N64 classic Banjo-Kazooie to the Switch Online’ Expansion Pack’ subscription tier, Nintendo has also improved The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s rampant lag and graphical issues.

This means Ocarina of Time’s ‘Water Temple’ and its abundance of water looks a little closer to the original N64 release. More importantly, as first spotted by YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer (MVG), NSO Version 1.2 also improves the controller input lag issue the classic game suffered from in the emulator, reducing it to 1-2 frames from 5-6.

MVG outlines the positive graphical changes to Ocarina of Time in the lengthy video, mentioning that the title’s fog and lighting still feature issues.

I’ve spent the last few evenings playing Banjo-Kazooie, one of my favourite games from my childhood, and the Expansion Pack’s emulation is pretty spot-on. I’ve encountered a few instances of slow-down, but beyond the occasional hiccup, the game runs near perfectly on the Switch.

While the Expansion Pack’s price still doesn’t line up with the number of titles it offers, this is good news for the subscription tier. Hopefully, Majora’s Mask runs just as smoothly when it launches next month.

Nintendo’s ‘Expansion Pack’ online tier costs $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership (one account) or $99.99 for a 12-month Family Membership. The subscription includes Switch Online, SNES, NES, N64 and Sega Genesis games, and Animal Crossing New Horizon’s first paid DLC, Happy Home Paradise.

Respawn is making two other Star Wars games on top of Jedi: Fallen Order sequel

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that it’s working on three Star Wars games.

This is a bit of a surprise, as the EA-owned studio was previously only expected to be working on a sequel to its acclaimed 2019 action-adventure game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

In a press release, Respawn confirmed that one of the three games is indeed a follow-up to Fallen Order, although a specific title or other details weren’t provided. All that the company said is that Stig Asmussen, the director of Fallen Order, is returning to helm the series’ next entry.

Meanwhile, the other two games, also untitled, tackle the strategy and first-person shooter genres, respectively.

Peter Hirschmann, who has overseen the production of such Star Wars games as Lego Star Wars and The Force Unleashed, will lead development on the first-person shooter (FPS). It’s worth noting that he also has a background with the Medal of Honor FPS series, while Respawn’s lineage in general — from modern games like Titanfall and Apex Legends to the original Modern Warfare series — is also in FPS.

The strategy game, on the other hand, is being primarily developed by Bit Reactor, a Maryland-based studio formed by various XCOM and Civilization veterans, although Respawn will provide assistance.

It’s likely that the strategy and FPS titles are quite a ways off. On Twitter, Respawn said its team has “begun production” on the FPS, while the formation of Bit Reactor was only officially announced last week. However, the new Jedi game might be fairly close. VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, a credible insider source in the gaming industry, said earlier this month that he expects fans will hear about the second Star Wars Jedi game “in a significant way” before June. He added that there’s a “chance” it could release this year, but it may also slip into 2023.

These three titles help extend EA’s time with the Star Wars brand. Since 2013, the publisher has had the exclusive rights to publish Star Wars games, but these are expiring in 2023. With that, Lucasfilm has already been partnering with other companies on Star Wars games, including an open-world title from Ubisoft, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Aspyr and, controversiallyStar Wars Eclipse from Quantic Dream.

YouTuber makes Grand Theft Auto V playable on original Game Boy

Grand Theft Auto V is renowned for having a sprawling Los Angeles-inspired sandbox to play around in, so naturally, someone wanted to try to squeeze all of that onto a Game Boy.

Enter Sebastian Staacks, who runs a YouTube channel called “there oughta be.” In this case, he figured: “there oughta be GTA [V] for the Game Boy.”

And sure enough, he managed to pull it off. As Staacks explains in a YouTube video, he built a custom Game Boy cartridge using a wireless ESP8266 microchip and custom PCB. This gave the Game Boy streaming functionality and, through that, made GTA V playable on the system.

Of course, “playable” is a bit debatable here as the game is extremely difficult to make out on the Game Boy’s all-green, low-quality screen. The limited buttons certainly don’t help, either. Still, it’s impressive to see it even running at all on the retro handheld.

What’s more, Staacks has made the project open-source and posted instructions explaining his work so others can try a hand at it. You can read more on that here.
