Are you excited for Pokémon Legends: Arceus?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is only ten days away from launching, and I’m cautiously optimistic. I love Pokémon games, but this one has an entirely different style than any other title before, which I find exciting.

Legends: Arceus takes place before Pokémon gyms, and the player’s goal is to make the first Pokedex.

I love trainer verse trainer battles, but unfortunately, this part of the game might be missing, as this game seems to be set before trainers caught Pokémon.

Additionally, while many hoped for an utterly open-world game, the title is more like Monster Hunter than Legend of Zelda. This means it’ll lack a massive open world that many wanted, but I think I’m cool with that. Here’s what the Pokémon Company said to Kotaku.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Jubilife Village will serve as the base for surveying missions. After receiving an assignment or a request and preparing for their next excursion, players will set out from the village to study one of the various open areas of the Hisui region. After they finish the survey work, players will need to return once more to prepare for their next task. We look forward to sharing more information about exploring the Hisui region soon.

So while there will be large open regions that will require players to travel by sky, water and land, players will have to return to the Jubilife Village, which serves as a base.

Alongside this new world (well, it’s the Sinnoh region before the time of Gym leaders), there will be Pokémon we’ve never seen before, crafting, new battle styles and more.

One of the things I love most about Pokémon games is discovering new Pokémon and changing my outfits, which this game should have quite a bit of. And although it might lack trainer versus trainer battles (I could be wrong about this), I’m still hoping Legends: Arceus satisfies my love for battle.

The game launches exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on January 28th.

Dozens ‘exited’ Activision Blizzard over misconduct, CEO tried to keep departures quiet: report

Thirty-seven employees have “exited” from Activision Blizzard amid the gaming publisher’s workplace misconduct scandals, according to The Wall Street Journalciting internal documents.

A further 44 employees have been disciplined, Activision Blizzard spokesperson Helaine Klasky told the outlet.

Since last summer, the company has been facing a lawsuit from California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing alleging years of fostering a “frat boy culture” that led to sexual harassment, unfair hiring practices and other forms of mistreatment of women.

However, given the ambiguity surrounding the word “exited,” it’s unclear exactly how many of those 37 people left voluntarily versus being pushed out. Likewise, Activision Blizzard wouldn’t specify exactly what form of disciplinary action has been taken against the 44 other employees.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reports that Activision Blizzard collected around 700 employee complaints who expressed concerns of workplace misconduct, although the company denied this to the outlet. Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard CEO, also reportedly shut down the release of a company report summarizing all of the above information to address the allegations. According to The Wall Street Journal, Kotick felt the report would make the company’s issues seem bigger than what has already been revealed.

Kotick himself has been the subject of immense scrutiny, especially following a November report from The Wall Street Journal alleging that he not only knew about the “frat boy culture,” but actively worked to keep it quiet. More than 1,000 Activision Blizzard employees quickly signed a petition calling for Kotick to resign, although the executive has said he would only consider doing so if the workplace issues aren’t fixed “with speed.”

Activision Blizzard is also facing a strike from dozens of developers at its Raven studio, which works on its massively popular Call of Duty: Warzone game. The workers were protesting the sudden termination of a dozen quality assurance (QA) contractors. The ABK Workers Alliance, which represents employees at Activision, Blizzard and King, has condemned the company for its “silence” over these protests.

All the while, Warzone players have been reporting numerous bugs in the game. Speaking to The Washington Post, multiple unnamed QA testers attributed these issues to the QA workers who were laid off from Raven. “You can’t just lose some of your hardest-working people and expect nothing to happen,” one of them told The Washington Post.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the ABK Workers Alliance — you can check that out here.

Humble Choice to retire Mac and Linux offerings starting February 1

After announcing changes to its Humble Choice subscription model, Humble has revealed that it will retire all DRM-free (Digital Rights Management) Mac and Linux titles from its Humble Trove.

Humble users will now need to download a new client to manage titles through the company’s newly established subscription service, which begins on February 1st. The main drawback is that it is only compatible with Windows.

Up until now, the company added new titles to the Trove every month as part of Humble Choice subscriber perks. The company will now offer 10 PC games to subscribers every month, for a cost of $12/month. None of these new titles will be for Mac or Linux OS, and current Mac/Linux users have until January 31st to download any games that they wish to keep in their personal collection.

As shared by Reddit user ‘Shnapple8,’ Humble Choice subscribers are receiving an email from Humble, notifying them about the upcoming change and letting users know that they can download the Mac or Linux games from Humble Trove if they wish to have access to their titles post-February 1st.

Check out a screenshot from the email below:

It’s worth noting that Humble will not deliver updates for Mac/Linux games you download and said games will only have updates for Windows via Humble.

Learn more about the shift and Humble’s new subscription model here.

Valve’s Steam Deck portable should start shipping at the end of February

Those disappointed when Valve revealed back in November that the Steam Deck’s release would be delayed until 2022 will be pleased to know that the gaming giant has confirmed that shipments will start in February.

Early pre-orders will likely ship in the February release window, with later orders arriving a few months later. Of course, given we’re still in a pandemic and chip shortage/manufacturing delays are common, there’s a possibility this shipping date could shift.

Valve also says that it shipped “hundreds” of Steam Decks to developers last month to ensure their titles are compatible with the handheld’s controls and AMD chip. Valve’s gaming retail platform Steam will also display a green checkmark on titles that have been tested and are compatible with the Steam Deck. As someone that was skeptical about game compatibility when the Steam Deck was first revealed, this is a good sign.

While it’s great to see Steam revealing more information about the Switch-like Steam Deck, it’s still unclear how much its dock that allows titles to be played on larger displays will cost.

Bandai Namco is making a ‘My Hero Academia’ battle royale game

Bandai Namco has revealed a new game called My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble that’s based on the popular series, My Hero Academia.

Ultra Rumble is a free-to-play battle royale title coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC via Steam.

Bandai Namco revealed the game in its latest issue of Weekly Jump, according to Gemastu. There’s no information available yet regarding its release date, but the publication says it will allow players to “team up to win a 24-player rumble in multiplayer action!”

Prior to its release, My Hero Academia: Ultra Rumble will be available in a closed beta test.

This isn’t the first game focused on the anime series. Back in 2016, Bandai Namco released a Nintendo 3DS game called My Hero Academia: Battle for All, and in 2018, the developer followed that title up with My Hero: One’s Justice, a sequel called My Hero One’s Justice 2.

My Hero Academia is a Japanese comic book series (manga) based on a world filled with superheroes. The series has been adapted into an anime and three films that have earned $40 million USD (roughly $50 million CAD) worldwide.

Acclaimed Hitman trilogy coming to Xbox Game Pass on January 20

IO Interactive has revealed that its critically-acclaimed Hitman “World of Assassination” trilogy will be coming to Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass day one on January 20th.

The news was confirmed in a larger blog post about the Danish developer’s plans for “Year 2” of Hitman 3 new content.

The collection, simply titled Hitman Trilogy, bundles together 2016’s Hitman, 2018’s Hitman 2 and 2021’s Hitman 3. The first two games are available on Xbox One (and playable on Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility), while Hitman 3 is on both last-gen and new-gen consoles. Xbox’s ‘Smart Delivery’ feature will ensure that you’ll get the enhanced Series X/S version if you play on those consoles.

Hitman Trilogy will also launch on PlayStation 4/5, Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 20th. Hitman VR, which allows the entire trilogy to be played in virtual reality, is also debuting on PC on that date.

Other “Year 2” content revealed for Hitman 3 includes a new roguelike-inspired ‘Freelancer’ mode coming in the spring and a new map codenamed “Rocky” dropping sometime later this year.

The World of Assassination trilogy has garnered significant praise for its robust sandbox stealth gameplay that gives players an extensive amount of freedom in how to approach contracts. The games have been so well-received that IO Interactive has since been tapped to make its own original James Bond title, although details on the project are currently under wraps.

Nintendo releases Pokémon Legends: Arceus extended gameplay trailer

Nintendo has released a 13-minute extended gameplay trailer ahead Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ launch, offering the best look at the anticipated game yet.

The video features additional detail about crafting, catching Noble Pokémon and more.

In the gameplay preview, we see how trainers sneak up on Pokémon to catch them and learn that they’ll have to throw out their own Pocket Monster to initiate a battle if they fail.

As shown before, techniques called ‘Agile Style’ and ‘Strong Style’ are used in these battles. Agile Style change the turn order and often let you make two moves, while Strong Style attacks are stronger but allow the opposing Pokémon to attack multiple times. Catching a Noble Pokémon seems to be rather difficult, with players needing to throw balms to calm them down and engage in numerous battles.

Crafting seems to be an essential part of Arceus and allows players to make Pokéballs, potions, smoke bombs and lures. Your Pokémon will be able to attack trees and other items to turn them into craftable materials.

The trailer also shows off Trade Posts that allow you to trade Pokémon and ‘Merit Points’ for items. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you’ll need to earn points by completing missions. As you earn more points and progress through the game, your Research Level increases. The gameplay clip outlines another feature called ‘Requests’ that seems to be a side mission system.

Finally, more information about customizing gear is outlined in the gameplay preview.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus launches on January 28th for the Nintendo Switch. MobileSyrup will have more on the game in the coming weeks.
