Gap Inc. to pay $200,000 for alleged violation of anti-spam legislation

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has reached an agreement with Gap Inc in an alleged violation of Canada’s anti-spam legislation (CASL). This protects people from numerous digital threats, including spam.

The watchdog issued the U.S.-based apparel retailer a warning letter in 2018 after receiving complaints about its electronic messaging practices. Complaints continued throughout the years, prompting the CRTC to open a formal investigation in June 2021.

It was alleged Gap sent messages to Canadians without their consent between January 2018 and August 2021. It’s also alleged these messages didn’t always include any way for people to unsubscribe easily. This is a requirement under the CASL.

Gap changed its marketing practices after being made aware of the concerns and reached a $200,000 settlement with the CRTC.

“Gap fully cooperated with our investigation, voluntarily entered into an agreement, and proactively implemented corrective measures to ensure compliance,” Steven Harroun, chief compliance and enforcement officer at the CRTC, said in a statement. “Cooperation is at the core of our approach to compliance as it avoids lengthy investigations and obtains timely results for Canadians.”

Sasha Pivovarova designs sleepwear for the Gap

Russian model and former art history major Sasha Pivovarova has designed a sleepwear collection exclusively for American retailer, the Gap, reports the Telegraph.

Pivovarova is a well-known face on the fashion runways of Europe and was featured on the cover of Vogue and in numerous ad campaigns for Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, and Paul & Joe.

"Creative process gives me the most freedom because I can do anything I want on a piece of blank media" explained Moscow-born Pivovarova, who currently makes her home in Brooklyn, New York.

The GapBody’s LOVE collection was inspired by fairy tales, and consists of six pieces, including pastel-hued floral underwear sets, camisoles, nightdresses and boyshorts. The sleepwear and lingerie collection launches tomorrow on December 1, with prices starting at around $26.

Her paintings have been exhibited in Paris and New York, and she is collaborating with Miuccia Prada to produce a book of her own artwork in the upcoming year. She is also illustrating a book for Karl Lagerfeld based on Russian fairy tales.

Pivovarova recently made her acting debut in the science-fiction thriller In Time, opposite Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried.

The blue-eyed blonde art history student never dreamed of becoming a model until friend and photographer Igor Vishnyakov took photos of her in 2005 and gave them to an international modeling agency. After signing with IMG, her first runway show was for Prada, who then signed her to a three-year exclusive advertising contract.

Isabel Marant designs Gap charity T

French fashion designer Isabel Marant has partnered with American retail chain the Gap to contribute a signature T-shirt for their charitable (Product) RED campaign raising money for AIDS victims in Africa, reports Vogue.

The high-profile designer has created a slouchy heather grey T-shirt in her iconic style. The simple boy-cut shirt is brought to life with splashes of color, as overlapping circles of green, yellow, red and lilac blot the heather grey T.

The T-shirt – which retails for $34.95 – is available in U.S. stores beginning tomorrow (November 25) and internationally from November 28. Half of all profits will go towards the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

"I am very thrilled that Gap has given me the opportunity to contribute to such an important cause," said Marant. "This is one of those rare occasions when fashion can do something to help make the world a slightly better place. I am more than honored to follow in the steps of the impressive collaborators who have worked on the RED project before me."

Founded by U2 frontman Bono and American activist Bobby Shriver, (Product) RED is an independent brand licensed to companies in order to raise public awareness and money for the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Through partnerships with major companies like Nike, Converse, Apple, Starbucks and American Express, the RED project has raised about $170 million since its founding in 2006.

Diane von Furstenberg closes the Gap

After a successful collaboration with British designer Stella McCartney, American retailer, The Gap, has chosen Belgian-American designer, Diane von Furstenberg, to create a new collection, reports Coco Perez.

DVF’s long-rumored collaboration for GapKids and Baby Gap is expected to debut with a girls’ collection in spring-summer 2012. Can you imagine chic little wrap dresses and colorful prints for the younger set?

Although Gap hasn’t confirmed the new collaboration, industry sources claim to have seen sketches from the collection.

Furstenberg is the latest to take on the childrenswear market. Former GapKids collaborator Stella McCartney had such good response to her collection that she’s since created one under her own label.

In the last year or two, several major houses have hopped on the kiddie bandwagon, including Fendi and Gucci. Jennifer Lopez’s twins starred in a recent Gucci ad campaign with shots of the toddlers cavorting with their famous mother on the beach.

As a designer, Furstenberg first came to prominence in the 1970s with the design of her iconic wrap dress, and launched the women’s perfume, Tatiana, around the same time. In addition to her main collection of ready-to-wear and accessories, DVF also designs fine jewelry with H. Stern, recently debuted housewares under her own label, and will return this fall to the fragrance world with Diane, her first new scent in years.

New Gap logo—love it or hate it

Gap Inc. has launched a controversial new logo on its official Facebook page, reports fashionmag.com. From the elegant and recognizable three capital letters on a blue square to a lower case sans serif font with a little blue square hovering over the ‘p,’ the new artwork bears little resemblance to previous logo.

Not a good thing when it comes to the amount of time and money invested in marketing the old logo which has now been around for 20 years.

Using the official Gap Facebook page to announce the new logo, the site invited members to give their feedback. An announcement stated: “We love our version, but we’d like to see other ideas. Stay tuned for details in the next few days on this crowd sourcing project.”

The logo has already stirred up controversy after it was severely criticized by American marketing website, brandchannel, among others.

Brand loyalists were not impressed with the change, but the company remains undaunted, responding with appreciation for the feedback, enjoying the publicity, and asking clients to contribute their ideas.

With a worldwide network of 3,100 stores, Gap Inc. is also home to popular retail clothing brands: Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime, and Athleta. Company sales in 2009 were $14.2 billion.
