GM to Increase Production

As a sign that things are slowly returning to normal in the auto industry, GM announced that some of its models are selling better than expected.  As a result, production on those vehicles may be increased.

The Chevrolet Camaro, brought back after a seven-year absence, is one of the more popular cars at the moment.

The other vehicles that have proven to be more successful than expected are the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac SRX.

With the Equinox, adding a third production shift would come as good news for the Canadian economy, as the car is assembled in Ontario.

Following months of job losses and plant closures, the news is breathing new life into the industry.

Will GM Keep Opel?

Internal sources revealed that Fritz Henderson has finally decided to look into raising capital to keep Opel and its British counterpart, Vauxhall, part of GM.

The news is particularly bothersome to those in Berlin, who were strongly considering going through the Canadian investor, Magna. This recovery would insure that 25 000 positions would be kept at Opel in Germany.

A Belgian investment firm, RHJ, is also negotiating for the bid. RHJ’s involvement would be the more desirable solution for the German government, in that it would equate to less financial loss and the chance for production facilities to stay open.

Conserving Opel and Vauxhall would act as part of GM’s long-term strategy. Without them, the company’s European presence would be anecdotal. Furthermore, GM would lose its chance to regain stature as a global enterprise.
