Some games warn Twitter API changes could lock players out

If you use Twitter to log into any important services, games, or other stuff, you may want to set up alternate login methods. Twitter’s upcoming API changes may break your ability to log in with Twitter.

At least, that’s the warning from two popular online games. Genshin Impact and Arknights (spotted by The Verge) both shared warnings on Twitter that gamers should change their logins just in case.

Genshin Impact tweeted that it’s ” in the process of confirming the impact of the Twitter API adjustments on game account login” and suggested in a follow-up that customers link their email address to their HoYoverse account to avoid login problems.

Similarly, Arknights tweeted that players should bind their game accounts to a Yostar account in case of issues stemming from Twitter’s API change. (I particularly enjoyed the perplexing image tweeted in response to the warning).

These warnings come after Twitter announced plans to remove the free tier of its API and start charging for access. It remains unclear if the adjustment will impact login services like this, but given how Elon Musk’s previous rash changes impacted Twitter, better safe than sorry.

Twitter has revealed the most-tweeted-about gaming topics in 2021.

Per the social media giant, here are the 10 games/gaming franchises that received the most Twitter mentions in Canada last year:

  1. Genshin Impact
  2. Final Fantasy
  3. Minecraft
  4. Call of Duty
  5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  6. Fortnite
  7. Super Mario
  8. The Legend of Zelda

  5. Fate/Grand Order
  6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  7. Knives Out

  9. Project Sekai
  10. Fortnite

It is worth noting, though, that Canada didn’t even crack the list of 10 countries tweeting the most about games:

  1. Japan
  2. United States
  3. South Korea
  4. Thailand
  5. Brazil
  6. Philippines
  7. Indonesia

  1. E3 2021
  2. The Game Awards
  3. Xbox Games Showcase
  4. Gamescom 2021
  5. Summer Game Fest 2021

It’s worth noting that Summer Game Fest, Gamescom and The Game Awards are still set to happen this year. E3, however, recently cancelled its in-person 2022 event and would not commit to a digital alternative, so it’s unclear what’s happening with that show.

The Xbox Games Showcase, meanwhile, was held during E3 last year, so it remains to be seen when Xbox will hold its inevitable major games event(s) this year.

What were some of the games that you tweeted most about in 2021? Let us know in the comments.

Genshin Impact developer miHoYo expands into Montreal

miHoYo, the Chinese developer of the massively popular Genshin Impact video game, has opened a new studio in Montreal, its first North American location.

The Canadian office is located in downtown Montreal and aims to reach 100 employees over the next two years. To that end, miHoYo Montreal is currently hiring for a variety of positions, including game design, art, engineering and project management.

As miHoYo’s first North American expansion, the Montreal office will work with the company’s other global studios on a new IP. According to Montreal International, the Montreal team is collaborating on a “AAA open-world action-adventure game featuring shooting-based gameplay within a living, breathing paranormal world.”

This would mark a departure from Genshin Impact, which is an anime-inspired action-RPG that’s heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. miHoYo says it’s also working with Montreal International and Investissement Quebec on recruitment and education initiatives in the province.

It makes sense that miHoYo is ready to expand its global presence to work on a new property. In its first year, Genshin Impact generated an “unheard of” estimated sum of $2 billion USD (about $2.5 billion) on mobile devices alone.

Montreal is also a logical place to set up North American operations, given Quebec’s pool of developer talent and lucrative tax incentives. Over the past year, a variety of notable studios have opened in the province, including Quantic Dream (Detroit: Become Human), Dontnod (Life is Strange) and Gearbox (Borderlands).

In other Canadian industry news, the Entertainment Software Association of Canada recently released its latest report on the national games sector. You can read our interview with ESAC president and CEO Jayson Hilchie for a deep dive into the Canadian gaming industry’s massive growth.
