Saab Is Back on the Block

Following similar situations with Opel, Hummer and Tengzhong, the latest news is Koenigsegg walking away from Saab.

"We’re obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase," said GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson.  "Many have worked tirelessly over the past several months to create a sustainable plan for the future of Saab by selling the brand and its manufacturing interests to Koenigsegg Group AB."

In his statement, he explained that the timetable has been delayed, which increases the risk of the restructuring plan for Saab.  This puts the future of both manufacturers at risk.

"Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps next week," added Henderson.

Nick Reilly Takes the Reins at Opel

The announcement follows last week’s news of GM’s decision not to sell its European division.

Meanwhile, General Motors announced its intentions of finding a new general director for the corporation’s two sister brands, Opel and Vauxhall.

For now, Reilly will be working with management for the European divisions to create a viable, long-term business plan, drawing from his past knowledge and experience with Vauxhall.

Reilly was appointed as Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his contribution to England’s auto industry, a distinct honour granted by the Queen of England.

After plans with Magna fell through, Reilly must see to it that GM makes no error with Opel and Vauxhall.

L.A. Auto Show’s Design Challenge 2009

What emotional connection will the young generation of 2030 have with the automobile? Having grown up with ultra modern technology and virtual communities, they will probably have a different understanding of transportation. This is the subject grazed this year for the design challenge.

The big automakers have come up with different responses.
Audi presented two concepts, the eOra and the eSpira. They are controlled by the driver’s thoughts and body movement.

At General Motors, driving was mixed with a video game for "Car Hero." As the car heads to a destination, the driver is challenged by making some skilful moves at the right time, as in the game Guitar Hero. As the driver improves, the system allows him or her to gain more control over the car and the car progressively decreases its wheels from 4 to 1.

With the Helix, Honda takes some hints from biotechnology. Using materials that can change shapes combined with the driver’s DNA, the vehicle will adapt itself based on changes in the driver. The Helix is also capable of being modified into 3 different positions to adapt to traffic conditions.

Madza takes its Souga concept and gives the owner the freedom to create and customize his or her vehicle, starting with a standard base price. The order is then quickly sent to production.

At Nissan the future will depend on an electric roadway system called the "GRID." The teens of 2030 will ride the V2G (Vehicle To Grid) system and the old highways will become obsolete.

Finally, Toyota chose to embellish communication with the "Link," which is self-serving and runs on spheres instead of wheels. The system allows the driver to locate friends and lets the driver travel with them and exchange music, etc.

GM Decides Not to Sell Opel

Just hours ago, debates began to move rapidly towards the sale of 55% of Opel to automotive parts supplier Magna and the Russian bank Sberbank.

Last night, General Motors announced its plans, following favourable results last month, to keep brand with the lightning bolt.

The decision came suddenly, when German government chancellor Angela Merkel was visiting Washington. The German official deemed General Motors’ behaviour as totally unacceptable. Germany strongly supported the sale of Magna.

In Russia, the reaction was more moderate, but the decision did come as a surprise. The Magna-Sberbank consortium is considering taking legal action against GM’s move.

General Motors explained its decision citing the favourable conditions in Europe, and the importance of Opel and its English twin, Vauxhall, in terms of global strategy.

GM Cars Get WiFi

Created by the California company Autonet, WiFi is being introduced based on the notion that most people would prefer to surf the Web rather than watching movies in their cars.

With a range of 45 metres (150 feet), the system is compatible with all Internet connection devices for laptops, phones and game consoles.

The access points will allow passengers to check emails or watch the latest videos online, while the driver can enjoy thousands of Internet-based radio programs.

The idea will likely appeal to families and companies wishing to stay connected to the Net.  Initially, a small number of GM vehicles (mostly station wagons, vans and SUVs) will offer the option, but other models will have the option in the future.  The device will cost $499 US, with subscription costs of $29 per month.

GM to Increase Production

As a sign that things are slowly returning to normal in the auto industry, GM announced that some of its models are selling better than expected.  As a result, production on those vehicles may be increased.

The Chevrolet Camaro, brought back after a seven-year absence, is one of the more popular cars at the moment.

The other vehicles that have proven to be more successful than expected are the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac SRX.

With the Equinox, adding a third production shift would come as good news for the Canadian economy, as the car is assembled in Ontario.

Following months of job losses and plant closures, the news is breathing new life into the industry.

The Koenigsegg Trevita

Based on the already extreme CCXR, the Trevita has been given an extra special touch. On top of the carbon fibre body panel, the car is given a diamond finish. This unique process, developed by Koenigsegg engineers, takes luxury to the next level.

The most powerful version of the supercar is equipped with a 4.7-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, giving an output of 1018 hp.

When put to the test, the Swedish marvel clocked 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, and hit a maximum speed of 415 km/h.

The Trevita, which is set to debut in Frankfurt  next week, is quite a rarity, with only 3 models currently in existence. The price has not yet been revealed, although we can expect it to range somewhere in the millions.

The End of Saturn in Canada

However, with only 12 000 cars sold in 2008, keeping Saturns on the market in Canada is no longer a priority.

Saturn dealerships have until the end of the year to sell their inventory, which could mean the loss of 2 000 jobs.

One ray of hope for Saturn Canada would be for Magna to purchase Opel, then use that network to distribute Saturns in North America.  But given the state of affairs at GM, that outcome is not very likely.

As for Saturn owners, servicing should be taken over by another GM subsidiary.  People who wish to buy a Saturn can expect to find nice discounts.

The New Saab 9-5

The vehicle’s profile has evolved in the front, featuring a more aggressive look.  The slightly rounded grill and chrome bars have been replaced by a single line, integrating the brand name.

The black windshield, a component of the new Saab design, gives the impression that the roof is placed on glass panes.  In terms of equipment, the 9-5 features head-up displays inspired by the world of aviation, as well as adaptive headlights.

The Saab 9-5 offers a full range of engines with petrol, diesel and bioethanol E85, ranging from 160 to 300 horsepower.  Each engine can be paired with a manual or 6-speed transmission.

While the current model’s sales have been falling, the new 9-5 is a fresh start for the Swedish brand. Now that Saab has been sold to Koenigsegg, the Saab 9-5 will be the first product released after the takeover.

Will GM Keep Opel?

Internal sources revealed that Fritz Henderson has finally decided to look into raising capital to keep Opel and its British counterpart, Vauxhall, part of GM.

The news is particularly bothersome to those in Berlin, who were strongly considering going through the Canadian investor, Magna. This recovery would insure that 25 000 positions would be kept at Opel in Germany.

A Belgian investment firm, RHJ, is also negotiating for the bid. RHJ’s involvement would be the more desirable solution for the German government, in that it would equate to less financial loss and the chance for production facilities to stay open.

Conserving Opel and Vauxhall would act as part of GM’s long-term strategy. Without them, the company’s European presence would be anecdotal. Furthermore, GM would lose its chance to regain stature as a global enterprise.
