Where to watch the 2023 Golden Globe Awards in Canada

After skipping a televised show in 2022, the Golden Globes are back in 2023 for a traditional broadcast event.

Marking the awards show’s 80th anniversary, this year’s ceremony will take place on Tuesday, January 10th at 8pm ET/5pm PT. It will be hosted by Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show).

However, unlike in previous years, this Golden Globes show won’t be on Bell’s CTV networks. Instead, it will air on Rogers’ CityTV, which means that you can watch through CityTV on television or online through citytv.ca or the CityTV+ channel on Prime Video.

The Globes has faced controversy in recent years for a lack of Black members among its organizer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Following a major boycott of the show last year, the HFPA has committed to improving diversity.

For now, though, many celebrities are still expected to attend this year, including directors Steven Spielberg and Canada’s James Cameron (nominated for The Fabelmans and Avatar: The Way of Water, respectively), Jamie Lee Curtis (nominated for Everything Everywhere All At Once), Daniel Craig (up for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and RRR nominees S.S. Rajamouli (director) and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan (co-leads).

Meanwhile, the movie with the most nominations (eight) is Martin McDonagh’s black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and nods for stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The other Musical or Comedy nominees are Babylon, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Triangle of Sadness.

Additionally, the five nominees for Best Motion Picture — Drama are Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár
and Top Gun: Maverick. It’s also worth noting that Toronto’s Sarah Polley is up for Best Screenplay for Women Talking.

These series up for Best Drama, meanwhile, are Better Call Saul, The Crown, House of the Dragon, Ozark and Severance. On the other hand, Best Musical or Comedy series nominees are Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building and Wednesday.

The full list of nominees can be found here.

Ricky Gervais won’t apologise for Caitlyn Jenner joke

Ricky Gervais won’t apologise for his Caitlyn Jenner joke.

During his recent stint as Golden Globe Awards host, the 54-year-old comedian hit out at transgender reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner – previously known as Bruce – who was involved in a fatal car accident in Malibu in which one person died.

And when people claimed the joke was transphobic, Ricky hit back and insisted he would not say sorry.

He wrote: ”Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist. You have every right to be offended. Just don’t cry when no one cares (sic).”

During his opening monologue, Ricky quipped: ”I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can ya?”

And he went on to defend himself on Twitter, when one person wrote: ”Re: Ricky Gervais’s defence [sic] of his Caitlyn Jenner joke. If your joke is about a person’s transition, it’s probably transphobic (sic).”

Ricky hit back, saying: ”What if it was about her killing someone with her car? Would that be okay? I made a joke about Caitlyn Jenner killing someone in her car. I’m #TransportPhobic (sic).”

Previously, Caitlyn was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in relation to her car crash last February.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney (D.A.) decided not to charge the 65-year-old reality TV star with vehicular manslaughter and officially rejected the case because she wasn’t speeding and her conduct was not ”unreasonable” when she ”set off a chain of events” that resulted in the death of a female driver, Kim Howe, in the multi-car pile-up on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

Johnny Depp, Mad Men snubbed for Golden Globes

Johnny Depp, Kit Harington, Amy Poehler, Taylor Shilling and ‘Mad Men’ have all been snubbed for Golden Globes.

The Hollywood actor – who received a nod for 2010 comedy film ‘The Tourist’ – missed out on a nod for his portrayal of gang leader James ”Whitey” Bulger in crime drama movie ‘Black Mass’ when nominations were revealed earlier today (10.12.15).

‘Game of Thrones’ star Kit’s character Jon Snow was killed off this year but the dramatic scenes clearly didn’t help the hunk get a Golden Globe nod for Best Actor in a TV Drama series as his name was not on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) list.

Taylor, who stars as Piper Chapman in prison comedy-drama series ‘Orange is the New Black’, missed out for Best Actress in a Comedy, with Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gina Rodriguez and Lily Tomlin all receiving nominations today.

Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer were snubbed in the same category for their roles in ‘Parks And Recreation’ and ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ respectively, and there weren’t any laughs for the stars of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and ‘Broad City’ – both shows missed out on Best Comedy nods.

There were several other shocks in the small screen nods for the Best Drama accolade as ‘Mad Men’ wasn’t recognized, although leading man Jon Hamm is up for Best Actor in a TV Drama series for his portrayal of Don Draper in the AMC show.

‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Jessica Jones’ also missed out, as did TV series ‘House of Cards’ and ‘The Walking Dead’.

Other omissions in the movie categories include bio drama ‘Straight Outta Compton’, and Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman missed out for ‘Grace of Monaco’.

What’s more, Tom Hanks’ role as lawyer James B. Donovan in historical thriller ‘Bridge of Spies’ clearly didn’t impress the HFPA enough as he was snubbed in the Best Actor category.

The nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Angela Bassett, Dennis Quaid and Chloe Grace Moretz at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday (10.12.15).

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 10, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton and hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Helen Mirren pays Je Suis Charlie tribute at Golden Globes

Dame Helen Mirren, George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were among the Gold Globes stars who showed their support for Charlie Hebdo follow the recent Paris terrorist attacks.

The 69-year-old actress held up a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ sign in support of the satirical magazine, which was horrifically attacked last week leaving a number of journalists dead, as she walked the red carpet at the event in Los Angeles last night (11.01.15).

Amal attached a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ pin badge to her clutch bag and revealed the accessory was a tribute to the people of France in the wake of the atrocity.

She told Elle magazine: ”[It is] customized in solidarity with the French people who’ve gone through a terrible week.”

George also paid tribute to the cause by wearing a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ badge – French for ‘I Am Charlie’ – on the red carpet and paid tribute to the 3.7 million people who took to the streets in France for a public show of solidarity against the Paris attacks.

Speaking in his acceptance speech while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, bestowed for an outstanding contribution to entertainment, he said: ”Today was an extraordinary day. Millions of people marched not just in Paris but all over the world.

”They were Christians and Jews and Muslims, they were leaders of countries all over the world. And they didn’t march in protest, they marched in support of the idea we will not walk in fear. So, Je Suis Charlie. Thank you.”

Several other stars also showed their support including Joshua Jackson, Diane Kruger and Kathy Bates, who all held up a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ sign on the red carpet, while William H. Macy told Variety: ”I am Charlie.”

Inside the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Theo Kingma was given a standing ovation by the star-studded audience as he insisted Hollywood will ”stand united against anyone who would repress free speech”.

He said: ”We understand the importance of free expression as not only an integral part of the American fabric, but a beacon that is reflected across the globe.

”Together we will stand united against anyone who would repress free speech anywhere from North Korea to Paris.”

Earlier in the day, producer Harvey Weinstein called for the Globes audience to support the freedom of speech cause.

In a column for Variety, he wrote: ”Tonight is the Golden Globes, and there’s always champagne on the table. I hope we can all raise glasses and that someone like Tina, Amy or George Clooney will urge us to toast with 300 million viewers around the world, ‘Je suis Charlie, je suis juif, je suis Ahmed.’ ”

Ricky Gervais won’t host Globes again

Ricky Gervais will not host the Golden Globe Awards again.

The comedian – who aimed a number of crude jokes at celebrities in the audience when he fronted the event in Los Angeles on Sunday (15.01.12) – has instructed his agent not to let him present the ceremony for a fourth time because he doesn’t enjoy the prestigious hosting role until the evening is over.

Writing on his official blog, Ricky – who came under fire after insulting several celebrities in the audience while hosting the spectacle in 2011 – said: "Thank f**k that’s over. I had a blast actually. It was by far my favourite of the three hosting stints.

"I’ve told my agent to never let me be persuaded to do it again though. It’s like a parachute jump. You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realise you didn’t die and it was quite an amazing thing to do."

The 50-year-old star’s latest jibes saw him joke about Jodie Foster’s sexuality and poke fun at Justin Bieber’s recent paternity scandal – but he thinks the audience understood his crude comedy a lot more this time around.

He wrote: "The crowd were great this year too. I think they finally worked out that my gags only seemed rude and nasty but were actually not too scary at all.

"Or they were just drunker. Either way, it was fun but I’m glad to say I’m off to New York to chill out a bit."

However, it’s not the first time Ricky has said he won’t host the Golden Globes again.

Following his controversial presenting stint in 2011 – which saw him ridicule top Hollywood stars including Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr. – he ruled out fronting the ceremony for a third time.

When asked last year if he would do it again, he replied: "It’s doesn’t really matter because I’m not going to do it anyway. I said I wouldn’t do it a second time but I think twice is enough."

Date set for 69th Golden Globes

Organizers have announced the official date for next year’s 69th Annual Gold Globe Awards, handed out each year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The film awards ceremony will be held January 15, 2012 and nominations will be announced on December 15th, according the official website. Entries must be submitted before November 4.

Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson and Alec Baldwin have been mentioned as prospective hosts for the evening, reports Deadline. Last January, British comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony for the second consecutive year, however his biting wit received mixed reviews.

During the previous gala, The Social Network was the big winner of the evening, picking up four Golden Globes, including best dramatic film. Colin Firth and Natalie Portman received the award for best actor and best actress for their respective movies The King’s Speech and Black Swan.

Founded in the 1940s during World War II, the HFPA was originally comprised of a handful of L.A.-based overseas journalists who sought to bridge the international community with Hollywood, and to provide distraction from the hardships of war.

Sixty-eight years later, members of the HFPA represent 55 countries with a combined readership of 250 million. As the third most-watched awards show on television, organization is able to donate more than $12 million to entertainment-related charities and scholarship programs.

David Fincher was also awarded the trophy for best director, Aaron Sorkin received the best screenplay award, and finally, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross received the Golden Globe for best original music.

Christian Bale and Melissa Leo each took home a Golden Globe for best supporting actor and actress, for their roles in Mark Wahlberg’s film, The Fighter. Although The King’s Speech was the favourite with seven nominations, it only managed to win one Golden Globe – best actor for Colin Firth.

Television series Glee was the big winner this year with three awards: best comedy series, best supporting actress for Jane Lynch, and best supporting actor for Chris Colfer.

The awards were hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais, who managed to ruffle a few Hollywood feathers with his razor-sharp Brit wit.
