New Pixel Fold renders give best look yet at upcoming foldable

Google’s newest phone offering is set to be released sometime in June of 2023, and now, we have a closer look at what the Google Pixel Fold might look like through some new leaks.

The photos surfaced on Twitter through Evan Blass and gave a more detailed look at the upcoming foldable. Previously, renders and even some video footage appeared online, but this looks to be the first leak from a historically reputable source.

Blass, whose account is currently private, posted three photos showing off how the Pixel Fold looks. The images show off the front and back covers of the phone, the home screen display and what the phone could look like when folded.

These photos add up to what has been said about the upcoming phone to date. They show off the phone’s foldability, front-facing camera and how the Pixel Launcher home screen will look on the larger foldable display.

Blass included some more personal thoughts on the Pixel Fold’s bezels, saying, “Keep in mind, there’s something to be said for bezels on larger-screen devices.”

The Pixel Fold will likely be announced at the company’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, on May 10 and is set to be released sometime in June 2023. Pre-orders for the phone are slated to open on the same day as the conference.

New Pixel Fold leak uncovers the foldable phone’s potential specs

A new leak from Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech about the upcoming Pixel Fold offers a detailed look at the foldable’s potential specs.

According to Prosser, the Pixel Fold will cost $1,799 USD (approximately $2436.45 CAD) for the 256GB model and $1,919 USD (approximately $2598.97 CAD) for the 512GB model. The fold is said to come in two colours, chalk and obsidian, with the 512GB model available in obsidian only.

Google is also reportedly offering a free Pixel Watch for everyone who pre-orders the Pixel Fold, making the steep price point more justified.

According to the leak, both foldable models will feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and run the Tensor G2 chip with the Titan M2 security chip. As for dimensions, the phone allegedly measures 5.5 by 3.1 by 0.5-inches when folded.

The outer display of the Pixel Fold is set to feature a 17.4:9 aspect ratio at 5.8-inches and will sport an FHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2092 × 1080 pixel resolution OLED screen. The inner display sits at 7.6-inches, with the foldable display featuring ultra-thin glass protected by plastic.

Like the Pixel 7 series, the upcoming Pixel Fold will come with Google One VPN, according to this report.

The recent leak also touches on the specs of the phone’s cameras. Prosser reports a 48-megapixel main sensor with /1.7 aperture and a sensor size of half an inch. The front outer selfie camera is reported to have a 9.5-megapixel sensor with 1.22 pm pixel width, f/2.2 aperture, and fixed focus.

Pre-orders for the Pixel Fold open on May 10th, with the foldable phone expected to get a full introduction at the Google I/O 2023. The foldable is expected to release in June 2023.

Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet and Pixel 7a to launch on May 10: report

Google’s May 10th I/O event is now rumoured to have some pretty exciting hardware announcements.

Leaker Jon Prosser, who has been pretty accurate with Google leaks in the past, has revealed information about the upcoming launch and release dates for the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a and the Pixel Tablet.

Pressor says that the Pixel Fold will get announced on May 10th and pre-orders open from Google the same day, but carriers won’t open pre-orders until May 30th, and the phone will launch on June 27th. Further, he indicates the handset will cost $1,799 USD (about $2,411.72 CAD).

The Pixel 7a will come in ‘Charcoal,’ ‘Snow,’ ‘Sea’ (light blue), and the Google Store will have an exclusive ‘Coral’ variant. The handset will be available to purchase on May 10th, and weirdly, the Pixel 6a reportedly won’t be discontinued. That last bit is pretty confusing, as typically, one would replace the other. We’ll have to wait to learn more.

Finally, Prosser says that the Pixel Tablet will also get the May 10th announcement, but that’s all he says about that device. However, 9to5Google has a bit more information about the Pixel Tablet.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Pixel Tablet will come in four colour sets, though we only know two of them for now. The first has a green rear and black bezels, and the second has a white bezel and beige/white rear. The tablet will offer an aluminum body with a nano-ceramic finish similar to porcelain. Google says that the device has a “soft matte look and textured feel.”

The Pixel Tablet will launch with Tensor G2, Android 13, with 8GB of RAM. It will also have two storage options, but the storage configurations aren’t mentioned.

The Charger Speaker Dock connects via pogo pins and receives power from a barrel jack, similar to the Nest Hub Max.

Google will announce this alongside the Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold on May 10th with a rumoured release window of June.

Pixel Fold’s Flip to Shh requires the handset to be folded

The long-rumoured Google Pixel Fold’s Flip to Shh feature is a bit different than what we’re used to.

Flip to Shh is featured on various smartphones, including the Pixel 7. The feature on the Pixel 7 series can automatically turn on Do Not Disturb mode when you put it flat on its display on an even surface.

However, 9to5Google has found strings in the latest Digital Wellbeing app update, which turns on Do Not Disturb when you fold your phone and place it face down on a flat surface. When flipped, you’ll feel a vibration notifying you that Do Not Disturb is turned on.

9to5Google says that Quick Tap will also be on the device, allowing you to assign an app or action to a double tap on the rear of your handset.

Google reportedly delays Pixel Fold for a second time

My most anticipated phone of the year, Google’s Pixel Fold, is now rumoured to be delayed.

South Korean outlet The Elec claims that the foldable’s release has been postponed again, citing several sources. The Elec’s sources say the delay is because the device isn’t up to Google’s standards yet.

Google’s foldable was expected to launch in Q4 2022, likely alongside the previously revealed Pixel 7 and the Pixel Watch. The device was initially expected to sport a 7.57-inch main display with ultra-thin glass (made by Samsung) and a 5.78-inch secondary screen.

While I want to see Google’s foldable Pixel, many things can go wrong with a foldable, including hinges not working, large creases, and more.

With this in mind, Google should take its time with its first foldable before potentially making a lot of mistakes (remember Samsung’s first Fold?).
