Chromecast 4K with Google TV received October security update

After getting the Android 12 update in the first half of October, the Chromecast with Google TV 4K is now set to receive the October 2022 security patch.

‘STTE.220920.015.A1’ is a 148MB update that will bring the October 2022 Android security patch, alongside other bug fixes and performance improvements to the Chromecast 4K. Last month’s Android 12 update was paired with the July 2022 security patch and came in at 722MB.

Following the Android 12 update, users reported minor bugs with the Chromecast 4K, like having to re-pair the Chromecast Voice Remote and interface lag. It is likely that today’s update serves to fix all the bugs that arrived with the Android 12 update.

To download the update, head to your profile avatar in the top right corner > Settings > Systems > About > System update. The update should be available widely by today evening.

Budget Chromecast with Google TV on the horizon

Leading up to Google’s fall event, where we expect to finally learn everything about the Pixel 7 Series and the new Pixel Watch, rumours are swirling again about a new budget Chromecast.

Since the launch of the original Chromecast, Google has worked to keep the cost of the device low to make sure it was popular against competition like Roku and Fire TV. However, when the company launched the 4K variant and then replaced that with the new Chromecast with Google TV, the price got a little more expensive.

It was justified by the inclusion of a remote and a browsable interface, but it appears that Google is still working on bringing the price down to continue to take on the competition.

The leaks suggest that the new Chromecast will only do HD video, which is a disappointment in 2022, but it makes sense, since the device it’s replacing only streams in HD. It’s also slated to be €39.99, roughly $52 CAD. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the device was sold here for $40 since that’s the cost of the current low-end Chromecast.

Since the new version is going to run the Google TV operating system, it will likely come with a remote. The version that comes with the 4K Chromecast is already very cheap feeling so I’d expect Google to ship that with the new model. I’d be very scared if they made an even cheaper option.

Google finally rolls out personalized profiles for Google TV

Back in October 2021, Google announced that support for personalized profiles on Google TV was coming before the year concluded. The feature was eventually delayed but is now finally making its way to Google TV.

Announced in a blog post yesterday, Google said “Google TV profiles let everyone in your home enjoy their own personalized space with their Google Account. With a personalized profile, you’ll get TV show and movie recommendations just for you, easy access to your personal watchlist and help from your Google Assistant.”

Even before this update, several people could log in to Google TV using their Google Account. However, Google TV would only filter suggestions for the primary account holder. With personalized profiles, each user’s recommendations, watchlist, and Google Assistant replies will be tailored to their interests and activities with no overlapping between other users/profiles.

Additionally, your Google TV profile will be linked to your account’s Google Assistant, which means that whenever you ask the assistant a question, its answer will be personalized according to your taste and paste choices.

According to Google, profiles are now rolling out to Google TV users, and should be widely available “over the next few weeks.”

To add a new Google TV profile, simply click on the profile picture on the top right of your Google TV home screen. Navigate to “+ Add Account,” and sign in to the Google account you want to add.

Google Play Movies & TV is moving to Google TV

Last year, Google’s TV app was redesigned with the ability to stream your favourite apps and search for movies and TV shows to buy/rent all in one place. So, to remove the redundancy of having two apps with this functionality, Google is getting rid of the Play Movies & TV app.

Starting in May, the Google TV app will be the only Google app to rent, buy and watch movies on Android phones and tablets. Google Play will continue to be the home for apps, games and book purchases.

The Mountain View, California-based company says purchased content will continue to be available on the Google TV app. Movies or shows you buy on the Google TV app will be available for Family sharing and Play Points.

Additionally, you’ll be able to use any Google Play credit or gift cards on the Google TV app. Your wishlist from Play Movies & TV is available on your Google TV app. Furthermore, you can continue to view and request refunds on your purchases on Google Play.

Google users can no longer rent content from Apple on their TVs

If you live between two ecosystems (like a lot people), you’ll be shocked to know that Apple is no longer letting users rent or buy content from the Apple TV app on Google and Android TV-powered televisions.

In fact, as of right now Apple TV app isn’t working at all on my Chromecast with Google TV.

On March 16th, a user on Reddit posted that the Apple TV app on their Android TV (Nvidia Shield) is not allowing them to buy or rent movies. Many other users in the comments have experienced the same issue.

You can still access the Apple TV app on Google and Android TVs, but you can only view content you’ve already bought or subscribed to. If you want to rent or download shows from Apple, you need to purchase the TV show or movie on another device before you can watch it on a Google TV.

The Apple TV app on Roku and LG smart TVs still allows users to browse the content stores and buy movies.

There’s speculation that Apple pulled the functionality from its app on Google’s platform due to issues stemming from the tech giant taking a 30 percent cut of revenue of sales in its app stores. However, there has been no official confirmation from Apple regarding this change. MobileSyrup has reached out to Apple for more information.

If true, this would be strange for Apple to pull this move. Over the past three years, the company has received significant scrutiny for imposing its own 30 percent tax on transactions made in the App Store and on its other digital platforms.

I could speculate all day why Apple might have done this, but the possibility that seems the most likely to me is that the company and Google had some sort of pricing agreement, and now that deal is over. In an effort to strong-arm Google to renew on Apple’s terms, the company has made its app less functional for Google’s customers.

Apple is in a unique position where it’s possible this move might work in its favour. I’d guess that since there are likely few Apple TV users on Google-based devices the blowback will be minimal. If the roles were reversed and Google was limiting YouTube on Apple TVs, I suspect people would be gathering their pitchforks.

In late 2021, Google simply threatened to remove YouTube from Roku devices, but somehow the two companies worked out that deal in the final hours.

That said, it’s still dissapointing to see Apple play boardroom games like this since I thought we’d moved past the days of companies being petty and harming consumer experiences, at least to some extent.

The funniest part to me is that when you try to buy something through the Apple TV app on Google’s system, a notification appears that says, “You can subscribe on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad and other streaming devices. Or subscribe to Apple TV+ on tv.apple.com.”

This is amusing since Apple’s own app App Store has a rule prohibiting developers from asking users to go to a different location to sign up. For instance, Spotify doesn’t want to pay Apple a cut of its profits when new subscribers join its service on Apple devices. Therefore there’s no way to sign up for Spotify Premium in the iOS app. There isn’t even a line that pushes people to sign up on Spotify’s website. Instead, it says, “You can’t upgrade to Premium in the app. We know it’s not ideal.” This situation could change in the future though.

If you only had a Google TV and you really liked renting from Apple you’re likely screwed, but I suspect that almost all users will be able to find a way to rent content via YouTube, on an old Apple device or via the web.

How to use Android’s built-in Google TV/Android TV remote

Google has finally built a reliable virtual TV remote into Android.

This is how to use it:

What you need

  • An Android phone with the Google TV app
  • A device running Android TV or Google TV

If you’re not familiar with these devices, we have a longer article that outlines them here.

Instructions

The first thing you’ll need to do is make sure you’ve updated the Google Play Movies and TV app to Google TV. This is basically the same app, but the Google TV update adds more browseable sections, a watchlist, a store, your library and the virtual remote.

I will note that with my OnePlus 9 Pro, the Google TV app still features the Play Movies and TV icon, but besides that glitch, it works well.

If you open the app, you should see a small remote icon floating in the bottom right of the screen. Tapping on that should connect you to any Android/Google TVs that are on the same Wi-Fi network as your phone. After you pair with them, you’re good to go.

If you have the Google TV app, you can even add a shortcut directly to the remote to make it easier to access. Swipe down to open the notification shade, then pull down further to access the quick toggles at the top of the screen. If none of your buttons say ‘TV remote,’ try tapping on the pen icon on the bottom left, and customize these icons to your preference.

If you’ve used an Android/Google TV recently, the virtual buttons should be very familiar to you since they mimic the actual layout of the Chromecast remote. The main control space is a swipe-based touchpad as well. This makes its control kind of similar to an older Apple TV remote. However, you can change this to a classic D-pad by tapping on the three-dot menu in the top right.

If you have more than one Android/Google TV on your network, you can quickly swap between television sets by tapping the name of the TV in the top left corner of the remote interface. If you tap on a search box with the virtual remote open, it will prompt you to fill it in with the on-screen keyboard.

You can download the Google TV app here.

Quick explanation

If you’ve updated the Google Play Movies and TV app into the Google TV app, you should be able to add a virtual remote to the Android quick toggles in the notification shade.

How it stacks up to other virtual remotes

I haven’t used LG or Samsung’s virtual remotes in a long time and don’t even know if they’re still competing. However, I use both versions of the Apple virtual remote and the Roku version.

This new Android remote stands up well against the Apple TV remote, but it’s a little barebones for my liking. The Roku remote has cool features like the ability to transmit TV audio through your phone. This is admittedly a niche feature, but one that I find cool nonetheless and would love to see Google adopt.

Google Home update on Android brings digital TV remote to the masses

Google is finally bringing its Android TV/Google TV remote to the Google Home app — at least on Android, and in the U.S. only.

While the tech giant has been making strides to improve its virtual TV remote and its availability, the latest version of the Google Home app is the perfect home for it; I just wish it would finally roll it out in Canada.

A report from 9to5Google states that the remote function is in ‘version 2.46’ of the Google Home app and that it’s currently rolling out to Android users. The update is set to come to iOS as well, but it’s uncertain when that update will release.

Google rolled out its new virtual remote within the Google TV app back in 2020. This app took its sweet time coming to Canada and finally (kind of) launched here in September of 2021. While Google confirmed the app is officially coming, two months later, its Play Store listing still directs me to Google Play Movies and TV.

Then when Android 12 launched, Google said it would bring new Remote functions to the ‘Quick Toggles’ at the top of the notification shade. While this is true, I haven’t been able to sync it with my Google TV. This is likely because there’s no real Google TV app in Canada to set up the remote with.

9to5Google says that the version of the Google Home app that’s currently rolling out to Android phones also features the remote. While I’m happy about this because the Google Home app already has a spot on my home screen, I’m not seeing any app updates or the ability to trigger the remote on any of my Android devices yet.

If you’re luckier than me and can access the remote function, 9to5Google says you need to input a pairing code to connect the remote to your phone. This is likely why the Quick Toggle remote isn’t working for me.

Personalized profiles for Google TV coming next month

After expanding the Google TV app for Android to Canada last month, the Mountain View, California-based company, is now adding personalized profiles and a new and improved ambient mode to Google TV.

Currently, several people can log in to Google TV using their Google Account. However, Google TV will only filter suggestions for the primary account holder. That is about to change. Each user’s recommendations, watchlist, and Google Assistant replies will be tailored to their interests and activities with personalized profiles.

To create a new profile, simply head to your account icon (top right) and add another account, similar to how you make a ‘kid profile.’

Support for personalized accounts will begin rolling out next month to Chromecast with Google TV, as well as compatible TVs from TCL and Sony.

In addition, Google is also updating the ambient mode screen to include “glanceable cards,” with information like the weather, news and more, all personalized according to your taste. This screen will also have shortcuts for podcasts, music, and photos and will be exclusive for users in the United States. However, the glanceable cards feature doesn’t have an expected rollout date yet.

Google TV app finally coming to Canada

Google is finally bringing the Google TV app to Android smartphones in Canada and 14 other countries.

This app replaces the Google Play Movies and TV app, allowing users to download and watch movies and TV shows. A plus of the app becoming Google TV is that it now features better curation and shows content from your other streaming services like Netflix and YouTube.

You can also save movies and shows you search for on Google to your watchlist, which then appears in the Google TV app. While a minor change, since most people likely use Google as their default search engine, it’s pretty useful.

If by now you’re thinking, “where have I heard the name Google TV before?,” it’s because it’s also the name of the interface that powers the new Google Chromecast. If you have Google’s streaming stick, this app should function similarly.

The other notable feature in the new app is that it also works as a remote for Google’s latest Chromecast and other Android TVs. This is a smart move and is likely an effort to get more users on its mobile app. It’s a strategy Roku is leveraging more in its latest operating system updates as well.

When the Google TV app is on the same Wi-Fi network as an Android TV, you’ll also be able to power on your TV, navigate menus and use your phone’s keyboard to input passwords. Users can also access this from an Android Quick Settings tile in the notification shade once it rolls out.

The 14 countries the new TV app is launching in are as follows:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • UK

The launch of this app in more countries should help clean up Google’s TV-related apps a little bit, but it’s still a pretty fractured ecosystem.

As always, you can rent and watch content via the YouTube app, and on some platforms like Roku, this is your only option. Android phones and TV are now basically aligned under Google TV branding, but even though everything now looks like Google TV, some devices are still called Android TV. iOS users can use both YouTube and Google Play Movies and TV.

It’s all a bit of a mess, and unfortunately, since YouTube is everywhere, I still rent a majority of my content through the platform. Hopefully, Google will figure this situation out sooner rather than later.

For the time being, the Google TV app hasn’t rolled out to any of my devices. Keep your eyes out for it in the coming weeks.
