Google’s Pixel is now the official fan phone of the NBA

Ahead of Google’s Pixel Fall Launch Event, the Pixel has been declared the NBA’s official fan phone thanks to Google’s new multi-year agreement with the league.

In addition, Google is now the Official Search Engine, Search Trends, and Fan Insights partner for each league, including the NBA, NBA G League and the NBA 2K League. The Pixel lineup will be the NBA Playoffs’ first-ever presenting partner, joining YouTube TV (also owned by Google but not available in Canada) in the postseason.

“Through this multi-year partnership, we’ll work with the NBA to create exciting immersive experiences for fans using our 3D and AR technology, as well as leverage new features that will be announced at our Pixel Fall Launch event,” reads Google’s blog post.

Google will also incorporate Search Trends throughout the season, displaying how fans search for information regarding games before, during, and after games using real-time data.

More information about the immersive experiences will be revealed by Google at the Pixel 6 launch event tomorrow. The company intends to unveil new Pixel camera features during a special Opening NBA Night on TNT Tip-Off pregame show following the launch event.

More Pixel 6 leaks show off renders, Google ad with ‘Magic Eraser’ and more

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro leaks have been relatively scarce compared to previous Google phones, but as the search giant’s October 19th event approaches, the leaks have increased substantially.

First, leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) posted a lengthy thread of high-res images and renders of both phones on Twitter. The images include renders of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in all three colours, renders of some cases for the phones and lifestyle shots with people holding the phones. We haven’t seen some of the pictures before, but if you’ve been following the Pixel 6 series closely since Google’s semi-reveal earlier this year, there shouldn’t be any surprises in this leak.

Next up, leaker ‘Snoopy’ (@_snoopytech_) posted a Pixel 6 series ad on Twitter (via 9to5Google). The roughly 30-second ad focuses on the new Tensor chip and shows off several features powered by it. Those with a keen eye will spot some of the new Android 12 clock and weather widgets, what appears to be a redesigned ‘Now Playing’ widget and a ‘Magic Eraser’ feature.

This isn’t the first time Magic Eraser has leaked, but seeing it in an official-looking Google Pixel ad effectively confirms the feature’s existence. For a bit of context, Google showed off a similar feature all the way back at its I/O developer conference in 2017. The feature never materialized, and the company confirmed in 2018 that it wasn’t coming soon.

In the ad, Magic Eraser appears as a suggestion chip in Google Photos — the user taps the chip, and it highlights a person in the background of a selfie and then removes that person from the image.

Further, the leaked ad shows off ‘Live Translate’ in a conversation between two people, in Google’s Messages app and in pictures, although the latter appears to be existing Google Lens functionality. The impressive part comes after, where the ad claims that there’s “no internet required” for the feature.

Finally, the ad shows off the new ‘Security Hub,’ which Google bills as a helpful way to protect your “digital life.”

All in all, the ad makes the Pixel 6 series look rather impressive. We’ll likely learn more about all these features on October 19th and real-life tests from reviewers soon after will show how well the features actually work.

Qualcomm tweets shade at Google’s upcoming Pixel 6

I don’t really understand this red flag meme, but it reportedly means something is a deal-breaker or is a warning sign for dating.

Now, it seems like the tech world has caught wind of the trend, with Qualcomm’s official Snapdragon Twitter account throwing a bit of shade at Google.

Next week Google will unveil its Pixel 6 series that features its own Tensor chip. While this tweet from Qualcomm is definitely aimed at the Mountain View, California tech giant, to be fair, Google isn’t the only Android manufacturer creating its own chip.

For example, Samsung devices feature its own Exynos chipset in Europe. That said, in North America, Samsung’s smartphones utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips.

Google officially reveal the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on October 19th.

You can buy a ‘like-new’ Pixel 4 XL at Public Mobile for $540

I doubt this is a device many people are looking to purchase in 2021, but if you want a Pixel 4 XL, Google’s smartphone is currently available at Public Mobile.

Public Mobile sells used “like-new” Google Pixel 4 XLs in ‘Clearly White’ for $539. However, only the 64GB of storage variant is available.

If you’re worried about a ‘Certified Pre-Owned’ phone, below is how Public Mobiel describes its ‘Like New’ smartphones:

“Someone opened the box on these phones and then changed their mind: it’s as close to perfect as you can get with a pre-owned phone.”

I reviewed the Pixel 4 XL back in 2019 and felt it was a relatively incremental update over the Pixel 3 XL. It’s also worth noting that the smartphone is almost two years old and that Google will reveal the Pixel 6 series next week.

Still, it’s cool Public Mobile is still selling Pixel 4 XL, especially considering Google stopped selling the device a year ago.

What to expect from Google’s October 19th Pixel event

Google’s fall Pixel launch kicks off at 1pm ET/10am PT on Tuesday, October 19th. Although Google hasn’t exactly kept quiet about what’s launching at the event, it’s possible — if unlikely — that we could see more than just the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

So, with that in mind, here’s what to expect from the October Google event.

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro

This really should go without saying. Google confirmed on October 5th that it would unveil the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro at the event on the 19th. Even before then, Google has basically announced that the Pixel 6 series was on the way and served some limited details about the two phones. The company has also run a lengthy marketing blitz for the phones.

In other words, don’t just expect the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro at the event — we know they’ll be there. The event is literally about the phones. Heck, if you go to the ‘Pixel Fall Launch‘ event page right now, you can see the Pixel 6 Pro on full display. Plus, there’s a little interactive piece where holding the space bar changes up the ‘Material You’ elements shown on the phone.

So far, we know Google will include a custom ‘Tensor’ processor in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, that each phone will come in three colour options and that the Pixel 6 Pro will have three cameras, including a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom (the Pixel 6 will only have two cameras, neither of which will be the telephoto lens).

Google has a whole Twitter thread of hints about the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro you can check out here. Plus, MobileSyrup has covered several leaks about the phones, including new accessories, benchmarks and more.

Pixel Watch and Fold

Rumours have swirled for years about Google releasing a Pixel smartwatch. It hasn’t happened yet, and while that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen, we have serious doubts we’ll see a Pixel Watch on October 19th. Similar rumours have swirled about a possible foldable Pixel.

Sketchy leaks claim we’ll see both a Pixel Watch and Fold launch alongside the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The Pixel Fold we would argue is the least likely of the two. I think that Google is developing a foldable — details gathered from an Android 12.1 build obtained by XDA Developers includes several improvements seemingly aimed at foldable devices.

But, we also think Google will want to avoid distracting from the Pixel 6 series, especially after it’s invested so much effort in hyping it up.

As for the Pixel Watch, Google could certainly slip in a smartwatch announcement, but I think if the company has a smartwatch to reveal, it’ll do so later in the year (perhaps to coincide with the Wear OS 3 revamped dropping sometime in 2022).

Plus, we haven’t seen many Pixel Watch leaks since YouTube leaker Jon Prosser showed off a bunch of renders of what  Pixel Watch could look like in April. In other words, I’d file both of these under “unlikely” — don’t expect them on October 19th, but don’t rule out a 2022 announcement.

Smart home products and other possibilities

Pixel Buds Series-A case

Beyond the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, it’s possible Google could unveil a few other things, like smart home products. However, I suspect we’ll likely just get the phones (it’s the Pixel Fall Launch event after all).

Anyway, we could see some new Nest smart speakers. Google recently launched several new Nest cameras, so we doubt we’ll get any of those. Perhaps a new Nest thermostat too? Ultimately, all of these are unlikely given the total lack of rumours about them.

Perhaps we’ll see new Pixel Buds at the event. I’d argue it’d make sense for Google to launch new high-end earbuds alongside its new high-end Pixel phones. But again, no rumours have even hinted at Pixel Buds, and Google seems content with the Pixel Buds A-series.

Google’s Pixel Fall Launch is slated for October 19th at 1pm ET/10am PT. If you’re interested in tuning in to the event, you can learn more about how to watch it here.

Here are the Pixel 6 and Galaxy Flex Note leaks from this past week

Images, renders and videos of upcoming smartphones continuously leak. These leaks can be challenging to follow, so we compiled a list of the past week’s hottest rumours.

From October 4th to October 10th, we saw a couple of leaks about the Pixel 6, and more.

Below are all the major smartphone leaks from October 4th to October 10th:

Google

Rumours first shared by AI (@AppleLE257) on Twitter indicate that Google’s fall Pixel 6 series event will also include the reveal of the often-rumoured Pixel Watch, Pixel Fold, and several new Nest smart speakers.

For more on the Pixel event leak, click here.

The new Pixel devices will reportedly support 23W wireless charging.

Evan Blass, who obtained several Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro marketing images — including a handful that show off the new Google Pixel Stand — uploaded the renders to Twitter. The photos show the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on a new Pixel Stand, implying that both devices will support Qi wireless charging.

Samsung

The patent, which outlines a smartphone called the ‘Galaxy Flex Note,’ showcases a foldable device with a wrap-around display and a stylus dock.

Graphic designer Technizo Concept created a 3D product rendering based on the patent in collaboration with LetsGoDigital.

According to the report, the Flex Note offers an expansive screen size when unfolded. However, there’s no separate front display like with Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Z Fold 3. Instead, the phone sports a wrap-round screen that runs across the smartphone’s body.

Huawei

Huawei recently patented a new foldable smartphone with the codename ‘Mate V,’ and now it seems like the handset is getting its own stylus called the V-Pencil, according to LetsGoDigital.

The stylus was patented at the European Union Intellectual Property Office with the description “electronic pen, computer stylus, touchscreen stylus.” This patent goes hand in hand with the Mate V device spotted on Weibo and first reported by @Panda.

Leaked Pixel 6 Pro teardown videos show off the smartphone’s insides

Even though Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro haven’t yet officially been revealed, we know nearly everything about the pair of upcoming smartphones.

Taking things a step further, two videos posted to YouTube today go so far as to show off what the Pixel 6 Pro looks like inside, how to take it apart and how to put it back together.

The images, which likely were never intended to be released publically and seem to be related to manufacturing at a warehouse, don’t include voiceovers and feature low-quality text, graphics and music (those are some sick royalty-free guitar riffs though). Still, they give an unpreceded look at the inside of Google’s upcoming flagship smartphone well before iFixit inevitably tears it to pieces in a few weeks.

The videos also reveal a few facts about the smartphones that Google hasn’t confirmed yet, including that there are mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G versions of the device. We’ll likely get the sub-6GHz version of the Pixel 6 Pro in Canada given mmWave 5G isn’t available here. The videos also reveal that the Pixel 6 Pro features an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip connector.

So far, we know Google will include a custom ‘Tensor’ processor in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro and that each phone will come in three colour options.

Further, the Pixel 6 Pro will feature three cameras, including a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. On the other hand, the Pixel 6 will only include two cameras and no telephoto lens.

Google will reveal the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro during an October 19th event.

New Assistant feature to let users skip ‘Hey Google’ with certain commands

A useful new feature that lets users interact with the Assistant without saying the phrase “Hey Google” seems to be making its way to Google Assistant on devices running the Android 12 beta.

According to XDA Developers, the feature is available on Pixel devices running the Android 12 beta. When this new form of interaction rolls out to everyone, users will be able to answer or decline a phone call by saying “answer” or “decline,” and “stop” or “snooze” when an alarm or timer goes off.

It’s worth noting that you can already say “stop” to halt an alarm with Nest smart speakers.

After you enable these quick phrases, you’ll see a message below the phone call or alarm notifications to remind you that you don’t need to say “Hey Google.”

To check if you have this feature, head to Assistant Settings > Quick phrases, and from there, you can enable the settings. Quick Phrases might also include tasks like “What’s the weather?,” “Turn up volume,” “Skip this song,” “Create reminder,” and more, but these weren’t spotted in the most recent Google App version, ‘12.39.17.29.’

While I don’t yet have Quick Phrases on my Pixel 5 running the beta, I hope it arrives soon.

R.I.P. YouTube Rewind 2010 – 2019

YouTube has cancelled its annual yearly recap video known as the ‘YouTube Rewind’ series.

The series of videos launched back in 2010 and at least for the first few years, people seemed to really like the occasionally funny recap that threw back to popular moments and memes from the past year. Then as the years went on and the world became increasingly jaded, people rather quickly started to hate YouTube Rewind’s videos.

For example, back in 2018 YouTube’s Rewind Video was the most disliked video of all time, and as of right now, it has 19 million downvotes. Then in what seemed like an effort to change things up, Google’s 2019 video featured some of the top videos and creators of the year.

There wasn’t a Rewind video in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and now, we know for certain that there will never be another one.

However, in a recent tweet, YouTube’s Creators account stated that it will launch a different kind of annual experience, so it looks like there will still be some kind of end-of-year recap.

Sketchy leak claims Pixel Fold and Pixel Watch will launch alongside Pixel 6

First off, while the leak below likely isn’t accurate, it’s still a notable rumour currently circulating around Twitter. With this in mind, I think it’s important MobileSyrup still covers it.

Rumours first shared by AI (@AppleLE257) on Twitter indicate that Google’s fall Pixel 6 series event will also include the reveal of the often-rumoured Pixel Watch, Pixel Fold, and several new Nest smart speakers.

It’s important to note that AI has a tiny Twitter following and not much of a track record for posting accurate leaks.

While it’s well known Google will reveal the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro at its upcoming event, no other rumours have hinted that we’ll catch a glimpse of other devices.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen reports surrounding a folding Pixel smartphone, but it seems unlikely that we’ll see that handset at this October’s event since Google will want the media’s attention solely on the Pixel 6 series.

Jon Prosser previously leaked details regarding a Pixel Watch back in April. However, there haven’t been many recent leaks about the smartwatch, leading me to believe that it’s unlikely it will appear at Google’s October event.

Google’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will be officially revealed on October 19th at 1pm ET/10am PT during an upcoming streamed event.
