Google Keep’s Material You makeover will start rolling out on September 21

Probably one of my favourite apps, Google Keep, is getting its Material You makeover on September 21st.

From the looks of it, the search bar will be rounded out. Additionally, the notes will offer colours that are not as bright and vibrant and will be a bit more muted.

The new create note button will be square-shaped now, instead of circular. The bottom bar is also more obvious this time around. With ‘Dynamic Color’ on, the app’s background will match the wallpaper on your device.

According to Google’s Workspace blog, the update will start rolling out on September 21st with app version 5.21.361.

This is ahead of the final release of Android 12, which is rumoured to go online starting early October.

Pixel 6’s Tensor isn’t Google’s only custom chip, check out its new potato chips

Throughout my life, I’ve had some pretty interesting flavours of  Japanese chips, including squid ink and green grape, but I’d love to get a taste of Google 😏. Google is advertising its Pixel 6 series with a new brand of potato chips in Japan, called “Google Original (Potato) Chips.”

The play on words here is that the Pixel 6 series will sport Google’s new Tensor chips, so they’re launching potato chips.

The Google Original Chips also features a bag design that matches the back of the Pixel 6 series and comes in five colours each matching a Pixel 6 series smartphone. Google is only launching one flavour, however, called ‘Googley Salty Flavor.”

Google has made 10,000 large-sized chip bags and they were free to claim through an online form. However, all 10,000 bags have already been claimed. But they were only available in Japan anyways.

Google updated its U.S. Store site with a new Pixel 6 Pro render on Apple day

All the news has been absolutely dominated by the iPhone 13 announcement today, but if you’re in the market for some non-Apple smartphone news, perhaps I can interest you in this Pixel 6 Pro pic.

Google updated its Store page for the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro to show off the ‘Silver’ colour of the Pixel 6 Pro (pictured above). It’s also among the first official renders of the front of the Pixel 6 Pro that Google has provided. If you head to the Google Store to see the change, you’ll need to switch to the U.S. version — the Canadian version doesn’t show the new render.

The render doesn’t really show us anything we don’t already know, but it’s neat to see how thin the bezels are on the Pixel 6 Pro. Additionally, you can see the curved display edges, the centred hole-punch camera cut out and — oddly — what looks like a strip of colour along the top edge of the phone.

Moreover, Google’s new render attempts to highlight Android 12’s Material You dynamic theming. The personalization features of Android 12 seem to be really important for Google, which also highlighted them in its first Pixel 6 teaser trailer.

While not the biggest reveal, I do like to see a little bit more of the Pixel 6 Pro. I’m rather excited about Google’s upcoming smartphone line and I’m excited to see more when it launches sometime (presumably) next month.

Oh, and Google apparently threw some shade at Apple via its old ‘@googlenexus’ Twitter account, although I can’t view the actual post since it’s a private account.

Google Messages upcoming feature automatically reminds users about unread texts

Google Messages is the main Android app for messages that is automatically downloaded on most Android devices.

A new APK Teardown by XDA Developers indicates that the popular app will soon “nudge” users if they have an unread text message. According to the report, the update’s description reads,”messages you might have forgotten to respond to.”

Additionally, messages that “nudge” the user are pushed to the top of your conversations list automatically.

In the teardown, XDA was able to make “Nudges” appear in the settings and says that the feature offers a couple of toggles, including the following:

  • Suggest messages to reply to: Messages you might have forgotten to respond to will appear at the top of your inbox.
  • Suggest messages to follow up on: Messages you might need to follow up on will appear at the top of your inbox.

The Messages app currently lets users manually set reminders for different messages and threads. However, the ‘Nudges’ feature will automatically remind users, which is a bit more useful.

The functionality isn’t available in the Message beta yet, but it will likely be making its way there sooner than later.

Android 12 is expected to launch on October 4th

The editor-in-chief of XDA Developers, Mishall Rahman, seems to have uncovered Android 12’s release date — at least as far as Pixel devices are concerned.

Rahman discovered that Android U will launch for the Android Open Souce Project (AOSP) on October 4th, 2021. And, if history is set to repeat itself, the official version of Android 12 for Pixel phones should drop as well.

While this date represents when the update will hit Pixel devices, it’s unclear when it will make its way to other manufacturers’ devices like OnePlus and Samsung.

During the Android 11 release cycle, the full and ASOP versions were both released on the same day. This is by no means an indication that the October 4th release date is 100 percent real, but we think there’s a very high probability that it’s correct.

Rahman says that three other people have also mentioned the 4th as the release date. We’re also expecting the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro to release in October, so this time frame matches that window.

This date also lines up with the fact that we got another Android 12 beta update earlier this month.

If you’re unfamiliar, Android 12 will bring a brand new look to Pixel smartphones and likely several other alterations. The update also brings Google’s Material Design update to the next level with ‘Material You,’ a new set of colour-changing guidelines that adapt to your home screen wallpaper’s colour.

Here are the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 14 leaks from this past week

Images, renders and videos of upcoming smartphones continuously leak. All of these leaks can be difficult to follow, so we’ve compiled a list of the past week’s hottest rumours.

From September 4th to September 10th, we saw a couple of leaks about the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 14 and even a Pixel 6 teaser.

Below are all the major smartphone leaks from September 4th to September 10th:

Apple

According to PineLeaks, a Twitter account run by Max Weinbach, Apple could solve the mini’s battery life issue with the iPhone 13 mini.

Weinbach says that the iPhone 13 mini will offer an “additional 1 hour of battery life,” indicating that either through software optimization or more likely, cramming a larger battery into the smartphone’s case, the company has managed to extend the mini’s battery life.

Apple’s iPhone 14 will reportedly lack both a notch and a camera bump.

Instead, the smartphone will sport a Samsung-like front-facing hole-punch camera. The iPhone 14 is also tipped to feature a slightly thicker body, allowing its several lenses, flash, and LiDAR scanner to sit flush with the phone’s rear.

Google

Google has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, giving fans a first look at the device being used in the real world. While this isn’t really a leak in the traditional sense, it’s still pretty cool.

Google also posted a picture on Instagram that said Tuesday the 19th, which indicates that the next Pixel will launch on October 19th.

Google threatened with legal action over celebrity hacking

Lawyers acting for Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and other female stars whose private images were hacked have threatened to sue Google for $100 million.

A number of female celebrities – including Kim Kardashian West, Kate Upton, Amber Heard and Selena Gomez – have had their iCloud accounts targeted and had intimate photos shared on websites Reddit and 4Chan but legal representatives for over a dozen of the women has slammed the online giant for allegedly for allegedly failing to remove the images and ”making millions from the victimization of women.”

Lawyer Marty Singer has written a sternly-worded letter to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, as well as Eric Schmidt and Google lawyers accusing them of ”blatantly unethical behavior”.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six column, the document goes on to claim Google has failed ”to act expeditiously, and responsibly to remove the images, but in knowingly accommodating, facilitating, and perpetuating the unlawful conduct.”

It added: ”Google is making millions and profiting from the victimization of women.”

The lawyer pointed out his firm sent a notice to remove the images four weeks ago, and several more since, but many of the photos are still on BlogSpot and YouTube, which are both owned by Google.

He added: ”Google knows the images are hacked stolen property, private and confidential photos and videos unlawfully obtained and posted by pervert predators who are violating the victims’ privacy rights … Yet Google has taken little or no action to stop these outrageous violations.

”Because the victims are celebrities with valuable publicity rights you do nothing — nothing but collect millions of dollars in advertising revenue … as you seek to capitalize on this scandal rather than quash it.”

Google launches music store

Yesterday (November 16), online music store Google Music officially launched in the United Sates.

Offering more than 13 million tracks from artists of both large and small record labels, Google has also partnered with the world’s largest digital distributors of independent music.

Consumers can purchase individual songs or entire albums from their computer or Android device and they’ll be added instantly to their Google Music library, and accessible anywhere.

The company is celebrating the launch with a variety of exclusive tracks, many of them free. The Rolling Stones are offering an exclusive, never-before-released live concert album, Brussels Affair (Live, 1973), including a free single, Dancing with Mr. D.

Other artists releasing free tracks include Coldplay, Busta Rhymes, Shakira, Pearl Jam and the Dave Matthews Band.

The site also features an artist hub, which allows any artist with the necessary rights to distribute his or her own music on the Google Music platform, and to use the hub interface to build an artist page, upload original tracks, set prices and sell content directly to fans – essentially becoming the manager of their own massive music store.

Google gets into fashion

Google decided to get into fashion by creating accessories inspired by its trademark colours. The collection has been offered online at googlestore.com since February 5.

The search engine offers pendants, knit scarves and casual t-shirts with the Google bull’s-eye.

Google asked designers to create one-of-a-kind items inspired by the search engine. The results, created for an annual fundraising show by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, are now available at the Google online store.

The collection is on sale for a limited time only and proceeds will go to a Vogue/CFDA fund for new designers.
