Céline Dion made a surprise appearance and shook the world at the Grammys!

Just as the evening was getting underway at the Grammys yesterday (February 4), a surprise appearance by Céline Dion added drama to a ceremony that already had plenty of pace and was fulfilling its mandate well, unlike several previous editions.

The news first broke that Céline Dion was in the audience, sending shockwaves through the diva’s fans and viewers both in the Crypto.com Arena and via the magic of television.

Céline looked fit and serene despite her recent health problems, diagnosed as we know with stiff person syndrome, a neurological disease.

A nice surprise on a Grammys night that turned out to be a great success!

Kirby is now a Grammy winner — sort of

When he’s not sucking up entire cars, Kirby’s been busy taking home a shiny statue. Or, rather, musicians are earning that gold in his name.

That’s what happened during the 64th annual Grammy Awards on April 3rd, where musicians Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman won a Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or Acapella for their cover of Meta Knight’s Revenge from Kirby Superstar.

You can check out the song below:

The arrangement was performed by 8-Bit Big Band, a 25- to 65-member orchestra that remixes songs from classic games, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Final Fantasy VI.

This isn’t the first time that video music has popped up at the Grammys. In 2011, Civilization IV took home Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, making it the first win (and even nomination) for a video game song in any category. One year later, Austin Wintory’s score for Journey won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

It’s rather fitting, however, that Rosen and Silverman have now won for Kirby, given that the pink hero is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year. As part of that milestone, Nintendo recently released Kirby and the Forgotten Land on the Switch and is also planning a special free virtual Kirby concert in August.

Foo Fighters feel bad about Metal Grammy win

Foo Fighters feel "bad" for winning the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Grammy.

The rockers picked up the trophy for their track ‘White Limo’ – one of the five awards they took home on Sunday (12.02.12) – and whilst singer Dave Grohl had admitted it was the one he most wanted, he feel sorry for metal act Dream Theater, as their track was heavier.

Shortly after being announced as winners, Dave told MTV: "We got it! I feel so bad for the Dream Theater guy, because they actually had a metal performance. We didn’t, but it’s awesome."

Referring to White Limo, he added: "That’s kind of the coolest song we’ve ever written."

Dave added he was also happy most of the awards they were nominated for had been announced before they performed at the show.

He said: "It’s kind of nice. Now we can just sit there and play and not worry about Grammys anymore. I think if we win them all, we look like d***s."

Drummer Taylor Hawkins was really excited about performing their version of ‘Rope’ – seguing into the remix version by deadmau5 halfway through – a one-off for the event.

He said: "It’s so un-us, though, when you hear it that it’s awesome."

Arcade Fire wins Grammy for album of the year

Last night (February 13), viewers who were patient enough to watch the 53rd Grammy Awards all the way to the end, were pleasantly surprised to see Montreal-based indie band Arcade Fire win the most prestigious award of the evening – album of the year for The Suburbs – over competitors Eminem, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum.

Frontman Win Butler was a little shocked and initially sank to his knees on the stage. He collected the award from Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson

"What the hell?" he said, dumbfounded, as he thanked his home province of Quebec and fans. "We’re going to go play another song, because we like music," he added, as the collective rushed back to their places. Speaking French, Butler’s wife Régine Chassange quickly thanked the city of Montreal. Butler placed the golden gramophone award on an amplifier before ripping into Ready to Start.

In Canada, and possibly around the world, most people expected Justin Beiber to win best new artist, or perhaps even Drake. When Esperanza Spalding, a little known American jazz performer, was announced – most of the television audience was likely asking, “Who?”

Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now won both awards for record of the year and song of the year. Eminem took home the Grammy for rap album of the year for Recovery while Muse’s The Resistance took home the honours for best rock album.

Best female pop vocal performance went to Lady Gaga for Bad Romance, and for the men, the award went to Bruno Mars for Just the Way You Are.

Bob Dylan and Dr. Dre to perform at Grammys

If you plan to watch the Grammy Awards broadcast this Sunday, February 13, you might want to let your boss know that you’ll probably be late for work on Monday morning – based on the number of performers, it’s looking like the evening will probably finish quite late.

The growing star-studded roster of A-list performers now includes two of the biggest names in music, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and rap star Dr Dre.

Dylan will perform with folk-rock band the Avett Brothers and current Grammy nominees Mumford & Sons in a special salute to acoustic music. Another music legend, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger will be making his first appearance on the show.

Current nominee Dr. Dre — in his first live television performance in more than a decade — will join Eminem for a historic collaboration, along with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. This year, Dr. Dre, released his first album in 12 years, and has already announced it is his last, as he plans to focus on his role as music producer.

The Grammy Awards will be broadcast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 8 pm.

2011 Grammy nominations announced

Last night (December 1), on a special televised event, the Grammy Awards organization announced with great fanfare the nominees for the upcoming gala ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 13, 2011.

The 53rd annual event will feature favourite Eminem, who leads the pack with 10 nominations, while closest rival, Bruno Mars received seven, followed by Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga all with six nominations each.

In the most prestigious album of the year category, Eminem’s Recovery will battle Lady Antebellum (Need You Now), Lady Gaga (The Fame Monster) Katy Perry (Teenage Dream) and Arcade Fire (The Suburbs).

For Montreal band Arcade Fire, this nomination is one of three that the group received – having also been nominated for alternative album of the year and best rock performance by a duo or group.

Canadian Justin Bieber, who recently took home four trophies from the American Music Awards, was nominated in one category: best new artist. He is predicted to win this category, in which his strongest competition is fellow Canadian and friend, Drake.

The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards) – or Grammys – are presented annually by the U.S. National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievements in the music industry.

Lady Gaga leads the way

Lady Gaga has a reputation as a trend setter. She freely admits that she works hard to innovate and stay ahead of the curve.

Now the Grammy Awards have bowed down to her Gaga greatness and changed an eligibility rule for one of the most coveted prizes.

Many were shocked when Gaga was not nominated in the Best New Artist category at the 2010 Grammys. Few would dispute she was the breakout artist of the year. She has already left her mark on the pop music genre and is still early on in her career.

The rule was clear: she was ineligible because her single Just Dance had been nominated the year before for Best Dance Recording. She lost to Daft Punk’s Harder Better Faster Stronger.

Grammy organizes want to prevent such an injustice from happening again. The rule has been changed and states that an act that was unsuccessfully nominated for a single is eligible for the Best New Artist category the following year.

Lady Gaga Shunned by Grammys

If there is a name that can represent the 2009 year of music, it is certainly Lady Gaga.  With her Fame album, she grabbed headlines around the world, while selling millions of copies of the disc at a particularly low point in the music industry.

Yet, despite her overwhelming global success, the star has no chances of winning the Best New Artist trophy at this year’s Grammy Awards.  Last year, Lady Gaga was nominated in the Dance Recording category for her single Just Dance, which takes her out of newcomer status.

Therefore, she can not be considered for the title of Best New Artist of 2009, much to the disappointment of fans around the world.  However, Lady Gaga earned the title at the MTV Music Awards, and seems to have little competition for the upcoming American Music Awards.  Neverthelesss, the Grammy rules will not allow the star to earn a trophy for representing what was hot in 2009, even if she truly deserves the honour.
