Amy Winehouse Was the Big Winner

The 24-year-old star won in five out of the six categories in which she had nominations. She won for Best Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album (Back to Black), Record of the Year, Song of the Year (Rehab), and Best Pop Vocal Performance (Rehab).  The Grammy she did not win was for Album of the Year, which went to Herbie Hancock. Winehouse did not attend the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, but did perform via satellite from London.

The other big winner was Kanye West who won for Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album.

Many Canadian artists were honoured including Joni Mitchell, Michael Bublé and the Cirque du Soleil.

Amy Winehouse Will Not Attend the Grammys

A spokesperson for the 24-year-old singer confirmed to People that the star would not be performing at the event because she was unable to obtain a visa from the US.

"The singer has been invited to appear at the event on Sunday after receiving an amazing six nominations for the prestigious awards. Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London," said Winehouse’s rep.

For the past two weeks, the singer has been in a detoxification centre, and will now concentrate on her recovery.  The spokesperson added, "Amy has accepted the ruling and will be concentrating on her recovery."

The Late Ray Charles Dominates the Grammys

The R&B singer won, among others, the trophies for ALBUM OF THE YEARand BEST POP ALBUM for his CD Genius Loves Company.  Joe Adams, who was the singer’s agent, accepted the awards on his behalf.

Ray Charles passed away last June, at the age of 73.

Genius Loves Company, recorded in the final months of Charles’ life. contains duets with many well-known artists, such as Elton John, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald and Norah Jones.  The duet with Norah Jones, "Here We Go Again" also won the prize for RECORD OF THE YEAR.

John Mayer took home a trophy for SONG OF THE YEAR, for the successful "Daughters".

The group Maroon 5 beat out Kanye West, Gretchen Wilson, Joss Stone and Los Lonely Boys in the competition for BEST NEW ARTIST.

Kanye West, who was leading upon entering the awards with 10 nominations, finished the evening with only one award for BEST RAP ALBUM, The College Dropout.

The Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani and Eve, Los Lonely Boys, Maroon 5 and Franz Ferdinand all offered performances, as well as actor Jamie Foxx who joined Alicia Keys for a special performance of "Georgia On My Mind", a song by the late Ray Charles.

The event was lively with host, singer and actor Queen Latifah, who assured that the 50 year anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll will not be forgotten.

Gwen Stefani and Maroon 5 Electrify the Grammys

Gwen Stefani, Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas, Los Lonely Boys and Franz Ferdinand will all take the stage during this exciting evening.

Other well known names that will be performing include Usher, Alicia Keyes and newly married couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. A special performance will be done by Elton John and Paul McCartney with the goal of raising money for the victims of the Tsunami in Asia.  They will sing Across the Universe.

The list of celebrity presenters includes Matthew McConaughey, Lisa Marie Presley and Charlie Sheen.

The gala will be diffused by CBS at 8:00 pm on February 13.
