Chris Wideman slams the Maple Leafs for using EBUG on Saturday.

The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs played out what was a relatively meaningless game for both teams on Saturday night, with the playoff fates of both teams already decided long before the game took place.

In spite of the fact that it was not an important game, it turned into something of an embarrassing one for the Canadiens who were blown out by the Maple Leafs by a final score of 7-1. In fact the Maple Leafs were so far ahead during the game that, in the final minute of play they decided to give emergency backup goalie Jett Alexander a chance to get a taste of the National Hockey League.

It was most definitely a feel good moment for the 23 year old amateur goalie from the University of Toronto, but it would seem that the decision to use Alexander did not sit well with everyone.

Following the game, NHL veteran Chris Wideman would publicly call out the Maple Leafs for using Alexander during the game, even going so far as to suggest that Karma would be coming Toronto’s way in short order.

“They’ll get what they deserve in a few weeks,” said a frustrated Wideman.

Wideman’s comments came off as nothing more than sour grapes after a bad loss and they stand in stark contrast to the comments we heard from the Maple Leafs on the topic. Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov, who had to give up his net in the final minute in order for Alexander to have his moment in the first place, was just beaming at the thought of giving a young man such a special moment.

“I’m so happy for him. Great to see this moment,” said Samsonov following the game,. “First NHL game, doesn’t matter it one minute, but big for him. He come to the rink to probably sit on the bench, but he has the time for play. Thank you team, we got a chance for another dream in the world”

Samsonov’s imperfect English makes the quote all that much more endearing and you can tell that the Russian goaltender was genuinely thrilled for his temporary teammate.

Habs announce two season-ending injuries on Monday.

To say that the Montreal Canadiens have been decimated by injuries this season would be something of an understatement, but in spite of that the Canadiens had even more bad news to share on Monday regarding a pair of players.

The first medical update from the Habs was regarding forward Alex Belzile, who according to the Canadiens suffered a leg fracture during the team’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes over the weekend. The injury will keep Belzile out of the lineup for what remains of the regular season but there was no mention of any surgery in Belzile’s future.

The other update was on the health of veteran forward Sean Monahan. The Habs confirmed that Monahan has undergone surgery on his groin, and added that the procedure will end Monahan’s season as well.

While these are both significant losses for the Canadiens, the reality is that the team is well out of the playoff picture. With this in mind, it makes sense that the Canadiens are shutting down their players in the hopes of getting them healthy in time for next season.

As Eric Engels points out, the list of season-ending injuries for the Canadiens has become a little absurd. On top of today;’s announcement, the Canadiens have already lost David Savard, Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Josh Anderson and Christian Dvorak to season-ending injuries.

Montreal Canadiens confirm the worst for David Savard.

The Montreal Canadiens have confirmed a bit of bad news on Saturday night, much to the disappointment of their fans.

According to an official announcement from the Canadiens, defenseman David Savard has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. That injury was suffered this past Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers, and with the Canadiens having no possibility of making the playoffs it seems they have opted to play it safe with Savard moving forward.

The Canadiens were already decimated by injuries with Carey Price, Sean Monahan, Paul Byron, Juraj Slafkovsky, Cole Caufield and Arber Xhekaj all on either injured reserve or long-term injured reserve, and the loss of Savard will only compile their problems on the injury front.

Canadiens announce a controversial change to their uniform!

The Montreal Canadiens have their fans in an uproar this morning, although you have to wonder if this may all be an elaborate prank on that very same fan base.

On Saturday morning, the Habs announced through their official social media accounts that they would be making a drastic change to their uniforms for the remainder of the 2022-23 National Hockey League regular season. In somewhat of a stange announcement the Canadiens announced that they will be switching to their powder blue “Reverse Retro” jerseys for the remainder of the season, citing the fact that they haven’t lost a game since February 11th while wearing those jerseys.

The reactions to the announcement have been mixed, with some fans expressing pure outrage while others being quick to wonder about the timing of this announcement. It is of course April 1st, otherwise known as April Fools, which could mean that this is just the Canadiens’ way of having a little fun with what is their passionate fan base.

Genuine announcement or elaborate charade? You decide and let us know in the comments below.
