Warner Bros. Loses a Battle

BBC News announced that the request Warner Bros. made to prohibit the release of the Indian film, Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors, has been rejected.

Warner Bros. found the title was too similar to their Harry Potter franchise.

The Delhi superior court rejected the case, saying that Harry Potter fans are educated enough to know the difference between the two stories. Above all, the fans know that the last Harry Potter film will not be released until next year.

In addition, the court added that Warner has known about the Hari Puttar film since 2005 and that they should have presented their case much earlier.

Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors will finally open in theatres in India on Friday, September 26, after a two-week delay.

A Harry Potter Conflict

FemaleFirst reports that Warner Bros. is suing the company Mirchi Movies based in Mumbai, India, which is getting ready to release the comedy Hari Puttar on September 12.

Hari Puttar is about the life of a 10-year-old boy who travels to Great Britain. Warner Bros. claims that the film’s name strikes too close a resemblance to Harry Potter and that it infringes on the copyrights of the franchise.

Mirchi Movies is taking defence, insisting that they have not copied the name.

The American film studio confirmed the news, however, has not made any comment on the affair, keeping matters within the courtroom. The case was heard on Monday (August 25) at the Supreme Court in Mumbai.

The Sixth Harry Potter Film Postponed

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday (August 14) that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will hit theatres on July 17, 2009, instead of November.

Warner Bros. President and CEO, Alan Horn, explained that summer was the ideal time to release a family film. For example, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix., released in the summer, was the second highest grossing film in the series after the first installment.

Although production studios have had to rearrange their schedule after the writers strike that occurred last winter, the final two Harry Potter films will not have any schedule changes.  The last book was split into two films and will begin filming next February.
