How to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in Canada

On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96.

To honour Her Majesty’s life and 70-year reign, the Royal Family will be holding a public funeral on September 19th. The event is expected to be the most-watched broadcast in history, bringing in some four billion viewers around the globe.

When

Because the funeral is taking place at England’s Westminster Abbey, you’ll want to make note of the time difference. Specifically, the funeral procession will begin at 11am local UK time, which is 6am ET/3am PT.

How to watch

In Canada, there will be a number of ways to tune in.

The Sky News YouTube channel and iOS and Android app will have a stream of the funeral. Alternatively, CBC’s website and Gem streaming service will have coverage, along with CTV’s website and Android and iOS app. (Of course, CBC and CTV will also have coverage on their respective TV for those with cable.)

Who will be there

Given that Westminster Abbey has a maximum capacity of 2,200 people, there will be a strict limit on who can attend. A formal guest list has not been released, but we do know that outside of the Royal Family, world leaders from various countries, plus a spouse or other dignitary, have been permitted to go.

This means that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon will represent Canada, while The Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand will also travel to the funeral with their respective governors general. Leaders from non-Commonwealth countries will also travel to the funeral, including U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife, First Lady Jill Biden. Many other world leaders are also expected to attend.

National Day of Mourning in Canada

It should be noted that while Canada has declared September 19th a federal holiday to mourn the Queen, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have elected not to recognize it as a statutory holiday. Meanwhile, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador are making September 19th a provincial holiday, while B.C. has declared it a holiday for public sector workers, while it’s up to the discretion of private sector employers.

At the same time of the September 19th funeral, Ottawa will hold its own memorial service with Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other dignitaries. Those interested in watching can do so via Canadian Heritage’s YouTube channel and The Crown in Canada’s Facebook page.

The Government of Canada is also inviting people to sign an online book of condolences, share messages online or visit Ottawa’s Rideau Hall for in-person tributes. Canadians are also encouraged to take a moment of silence at 1pm local time.

How to watch Rick and Morty Season 6 in Canada

It’s that time of year once again: a new season of Rick and Morty is coming! Season 6 of the popular Adult Swim cartoon will air on September 4th. However, for Canadians looking to watch it, it seems the process may be a little complicated.

Similar to Season 5, Rick and Morty Season 6 should be available through the StackTV app or through the Global TV app.

Corus confirmed to MobileSyrup that Season 6 will be on StackTV when it premiers this weekend, but it’s worth noting that some existing Rick and Morty seasons will leave StackTV later in September. Season 5 leaves on the 15th, while Season 1 leaves on the 13th. Season 3 doesn’t have a warning, while Season 2 and 4 aren’t currently available on the platform.

Currently, StackTV is available as an add-on to Amazon Prime Video through the streaming platform’s ‘Channels’ system. StackTV costs $12.99/mo on top of the $9.99/mo cost of Amazon Prime, which you need for Prime Video.

Meanwhile, the Global TV app is free to download and use but requires users to sign in with their cable provider to watch content. Those who have ditched cable will be out of luck. Oddly, the Global TV website only lists two seasons of Rick and Morty available, seemingly including some of Seasons 1, 3, and 5. Presumably, Season 6 will be available too once it airs.

However, there appear to be two new places for watching Adult Swim content in Canada. Fubo TV and River TV both have Adult Swim and should get Rick and Morty Season 6.

Fubo TV costs $39.99/mo for the ‘Premium’ plan, which includes Adult Swim. However, Fubo offers the first month half off, so it costs $19.99. River TV has a 30-day free trial and costs $16.99/mo.

That seems to be all the ways of watching Rick and Morty in Canada, unless you plan to use a VPN to access it through a platform not available in Canada, or sail the seven seas. It’s a bit confusing, but then, it wouldn’t be Canadian TV if there wasn’t some arbitrary, confusing system in place to extract cash from your wallet for a media giant.

Until September 4th, you can watch a free, 24/7 Rick and Morty marathon on Adult Swim, no cable provider sign-in or streaming platform is required.

How to Watch Lamar Odom vs Ojani Noa in Canada

For whatever reason (🤑), celebrity boxing bouts have rapidly become one of the most prominent and visibly marketed sporting events in the world, with previous iterations, such as Logan Paul vs. Floyd Mayweather and Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley selling a million and half a million Pay-Per-Views respectively.

Although questions about the sport’s quality going down the drain and the fighters’ lack of integrity have been raised, the numbers speak for themselves, and something about two celebrities going at each other seems to garner a lot of interest from casual boxing fans.

Hence next on the list is NBA’s 1999 fourth-round draft pick and 2-time champion Lamar Odom (41) going up against Cuban actor, producer and personal trainer Ojani Noa (47), who interestingly enough, also happens to be Jennifer Lopez’s first husband.

Schedule

The PPV event is set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, October 2nd at the James L. Knight Center, Miami, FL, with four undercards, starting at 8pm ET. Here is a list of fights taking place before the main event:

  • Natalie DiDonato vs. Maria Escobar
  • Paul Apostolides vs. Michael Gonzalez
  • Javante Carter vs. Wideneck
  • Paulie Malignaggi vs. Corey B

How to stream the event in Canada?

Canadians can tune into Fite TV (exclusive) to catch the PPV event for $29.99 USD ($38.09 CAD). Fite TV can be streamed on your browser and its app is available on iOS, Android as well as on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Xbox and PlayStation. You don’t need to have a pre-existing or new subscription, just pay for the PPV and watch. Learn more or purchase the PPV here.

It’s worth noting that Canadian carriers usually have boxing events available on PPV, however, there seem to be none for this event.

How to watch Microsoft’s September Surface event

Microsoft’s secretive September Surface event will take place Wednesday morning. If you’re interested in tuning in, here’s how to do it.

First, the live stream event kicks off at 11am ET/8am PT. You’ll be able to watch it on Microsoft’s event page here. However, last time Microsoft held an event, the stream had some issues — you may be able to catch it on YouTube via Microsoft’s channel as well, or on other YouTube channels if the stream has issues again.

We expect the event to take about an hour, but if that’s too long for you, you can also follow along for coverage on MobileSyrup via our website or social handles, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

As for what we expect from the event, the short answer: Surface devices. Microsoft hasn’t really given much detail beyond. However, we do have a full break down of updates we expect for popular Surface hardware including the Surface Pro, Go and more. You can find that here.
