Meta adds new features to Instagram and Facebook Reels

Meta has introduced several new features for Reels on Facebook and Instagram to help creators share their content to a wider audience.

The ‘Add Yours’ sticker lets users join or start trends. Facebook and Instagram compile all the different types of Reels with specific ‘Add Yours’ prompts to separate pages.

The top of the page will mention the username of the account that started that specific sticker. Meta initially launched the ‘Add Yours’ feature on stories.

Users can now also cross-post Reels from Instagram to Facebook and auto-create Reels on Facebook with previously shared Facebook stories. Eligible creators can also earn money through Facebook Stars by sharing monetized Reels on Facebook. According to Meta’s website, viewers purchase Stars to send to streaming creators. Meta pays $0.01 USD for every Star a creator receives.

Meta has also added more insights to Facebook Reels through the Creator Studio, sharing metrics including reach, minutes viewed and average watch time.

Instagram turning almost all videos into Reels

Instagram will be sharing almost all videos as Reels.

According to a blog post by the company, this will apply to videos less than 15 minutes long. Instagram users who post these videos through public accounts will also have them viewed by a larger audience the company thinks will enjoy the clips. Anyone will be able to build on the video.

Videos and Reels will also be available under one tab. The company says that users will also be able to remix public photos in the coming weeks. Instagram’s remixing feature allows users to film reactions next to original videos.

“If you have a public account, you can turn off remixing for Reels, feed videos or both without changing your account’s privacy settings. You can also turn remixing off for individual videos,” Instagram notes in its Help Center.

Instagram aims to integrate all of its video platforms into Reels

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has uploaded a two-and-a-half-minute video on Twitter outlining what 2022 holds for the photo-sharing platform, and it appears as though 2022 will be the year Reels shine and solidify its space in the short video industry.

“We’re going to have to rethink what Instagram is because the world is changing quickly and we’re going to have to change with it,” says Mosseri. Instagram and Mosseri’s broader plan going into 2022 is to consolidate all of the platform’s video formats into Reels and continue to grow Reels. Instagram did something similar earlier in October this year when it replaced its long-form video space IGTV with Instagram TV.

Considering that the short video platform TikTok recently overtook Google as the most visited website of 2021,  Instagram’s decision to double down on and polish the video side of things on the platform is a smart one.

Apart from video, going into 2022, Instagram will deploy more monetization tools to help creators make a living off the platform, said Mosseri, along with bringing more transparency to the platform to help users understand how the platform works and improve messaging features since that is the primary way people connect online.

In other Instagram news, Mosseri recently revealed that Instagram is working on bringing back its chronological feed, almost five years after phasing out the layout.
