iOS 15’s ‘Unlock with Apple Watch’ bug fix for iPhone 13 is now available

Apple has dropped an update that fixes the iPhone 13’s ‘Unlock with Apple Watch’ bug that prevents the feature from working.

According to the iOS 15.0.1’s notes, the update doesn’t seem to include anything else beyond a fix for that particular bug. Apple launched unlock with Apple Watch alongside watchOS 7.4 earlier this year to allow the iPhone to unlock while you’re wearing a face mask.

While the feature continued to work on older iPhones after updating to iOS 15, Apple recently acknowledged it was broken on all iPhone 13 devices.

While it’s frustrating Apple dropped the iPhone 13 series with this bug, it’s great to see the tech giant move relatively quickly to fix it.

To download the update, navigate to ‘Settings,’ ‘General’ and then ‘Software Update.’

iOS 15 simplifies Apple’s Clock app and alarm editing

iOS 14 was overall a great operating system that brought widgets, privacy enhancements and a home screen redesign to Apple’s iPhone. However, iOS 14 also saw Apple transitioning from its traditional ‘clock’ interface and the removal of the wheel picker.

While setting alarms with iOS 14 wasn’t an issue, editing or deleting them was. Tapping an alarm did nothing, and you had to press the edit button before making any changes, which felt highly unnecessary.

However, with iOS 15, iPhone’s clock interface has gone back to the wheel picker layout, and alarms can be edited or deleted fairly quickly with the tap of a button now.

Read through the steps below or watch the short gif above:

  1. Open the Clock app
  2. Go to the ‘Alarm’ tab at the bottom
  3. To delete: You can either swipe an alarm to the left or click on it and tap the ‘Delete Alarm’ option
  4. To edit: Click on the specific alarm you want to change, and the wheel picker layout will pop up, allowing you to make any changes, including setting it to repeat, labels, sound and a snooze toggle

Your iPhone 13 will disable Face ID if it detects a third-party screen replacement

iFixit recently confirmed that changing an iPhone 13 series’ battery will result in an “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery” message.

However, the device will continue to operate like normal but without access to battery health features, just like Apple’s iPhone 12 series.

Now, more information from iFixit’s teardown of the iPhone 13 Pro reveals that swapping the phone’s display will render Face ID useless.

“We tried transferring the sensors from the old display and porting over the Face ID hardware, but no dice,” reads iFixit’s teardown. It seems as though the display is serial-locked to the specific device, and changing it disables Face ID.

However, this happens with third-party repairs and getting your iPhone 13’s screen replaced from Apple’s service centre won’t result in the Face ID malfunction.

YouTuber ‘Phone Repair Guru’ also reported the same issue. Watch the video below for reference:

Here’s how to invite Android friends to a FaceTime call on iOS 15

With the introduction of iOS 15, FaceTime calls have gained significant new features, including a ‘Microphone Mode’ with voice isolation/wide spectrum and a ‘Portrait Mode’ that blurs whatever is in your background.

However, the most notable feature is Android FaceTime support.

Similar to how Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Cisco Webex work, Apple’s FaceTime too now allows you to create a shareable link for others to join, no matter what platform they’re on.

The new feature will enable friends, family or colleagues who do not have an Apple device to join a FaceTime video/audio call via a web browser on any non-Apple device, including Windows PCs and Android phones.

It’s worth noting that non-apple users can only join a FaceTime call and can’t create one.

Here is how you can initiate a FaceTime call and invite your friend to it on iOS 15:

  • Launch the FaceTime app on your iPhone running iOS 15.
  • Tap on ‘Create Link.’
  • Give a name to the video room by tapping ‘Add Name.’ This step is optional.
  • Decide how you want to share the link (message, email, WhatsApp, Instagram) and tap that option. Proceed to send the link to all the people you want to invite.

That’s all you need to do on the iOS end. Once your invitees receive the link and open it, they’ll be redirected to the webpage with a popup asking for their name.

Upon joining, you’ll have to admit the invitees. While they’ll have all the traditional FaceTime controls, i.e., camera On/Off, mic mute, switching between the rear and front camera, they won’t be able to use Memojis, filters, stickers, etc.

Google updates its iOS apps with support for Focus mode

With iOS 15 rolling out to Apple devices, apps are starting to get updates and support new features from the upgrade. That includes Google’s apps — the search giant detailed some of the changes heading to its software for iOS 15.

First up, Google updated its apps to work with the new ‘Focus mode’ in iOS 15. The company shared a few examples of how this works in practice. For one, Google Maps will still push through important notifications, such as navigation. Similarly, Google’s Home app will still send essential notifications, such as if someone’s at the door. Google Tasks will also ignore Focus mode for notifications tied to a specific time.

However, notifications that aren’t urgent will head to the iOS Notification Center when users are in Focus mode.

Another significant (and welcome) change is better Spotlight support for YouTube Music. Users can now search for songs or artists in Spotlight and jump straight into the YouTube Music app to listen to the music. Google says that Drive will also get better with Spotlight but didn’t detail any specific improvement.

And for iPadOS 15, Google confirmed that it’s bringing larger versions of its widgets for Apple tablets that should play nice on big screens.

That’s all Google outlined in its blog post. Overall, no massive changes, but definitely some welcome quality of life improvements for those who use the iPhone or iPad but rely on Google’s services.

iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8 roll out to iPad and Apple Watch owners

Alongside the new iOS 15, Apple is also rolling out the latest versions of iPadOS and watchOS to the public.

iPadOS 15 brings many of the same improvements we’ve seen in iOS 15, like copy/paste in images, FaceTime updates and more. But beyond that, there are a few new features that are only coming to the iPad.

This includes a new quick note feature, more widget controls and some pretty substantial improvements to make multitasking easier. You can read more about the changes in iPadOS 15 here.

This update is being delivered to iPads as old as the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 4. You can download the update by navigating to the ‘General’ section of the Settings app and selecting ‘Software Update.’

watchOS 8

The new watchOS improvements are fairly subtle as well. This year, Apple’s added a new Mindfulness app, some more workouts and a new watch face that places the clock between a subject and the background for a really fun effect.

There are also revamped smart home controls, the ability to set multiple timers and more apps now support the always-on display of the Series 5, Series 6 and Series 7. You can read more about these updates and more in our prior coverage.

This update is rolling out to Apple watches as old as the Series 3. To update your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone, choose ‘General’ and from there, select ‘Software Update.’

iOS 15 is out now with new FaceTime features and Focus notifications

iOS 15 is here, so saddle up your iPhone and start downloading the latest update to try out all of the new features. This year’s update is overall pretty bland, especially compared to the new hotness that is Material You over on Android, but it’s a worthwhile update nonetheless.

Below we’ll highlight a few of our favourite new features and what we like about them based on a few weeks with the latest iOS 15 betas, but before that, let’s go over how to install the update. As with all iOS updates, simply navigate to your Settings app, open the ‘General’ section and choose ‘Software update.’

What is this new Focus mode?

The most noticeable iOS 15 update is the new look for notifications. This time around, the app icon with each notification is larger to make it easier to see at-a-glance which app is begging for your attention.

Beyond that subtle visual flourish, there’s a new ‘Focus’ button within Settings and Control Center (the menu that allows you to change screen brightness and play/pause music playback). When you open this, it shows you a few new notification filters that can block preset apps during specific times. You need to set this up on your own, but once activated, it can be useful for blocking social notifications during work hours and work notifications during social hours.

FaceTime invites Windows and Android to the party

FaceTime Gridview

Perhaps the part of iOS 15 that will be used the most is a new FaceTime feature that allows users to set up chatrooms that you can invite people to with a link. This is just like how Zoom, Google Meet and Teams all work, putting FaceTime on slightly more level footing with those competitors. It also allows FaceTime users to invite Android and Windows users for the first time.

To be clear, non-Apple users can only be invited to a FaceTime chat; they can’t start one.

On top of all this, Apple has also added some new layouts to Facetime to make it easier to see everyone in a chat at once.

The new iMessage updates take a bit to get used to

One of the more subtle updates that’s come with iOS 15 is a new form of iMessage. For the most part, the app looks the same, but now, when you send or receive multiple photos, they get stacked in the chat instead of all displayed at once.

This looks nicer, but you can easily mistake it for just a single photo if you just glance at it.

One of the more exciting updates that seems cool but might not catch on is the new ‘Shared with you’ sections within Safari and Photos. In each of these sections, you can see links or pictures that people have sent you via iMessage, so you can quickly open them or check them out later.

Copy text from anywhere

One of the sleeper updates added in iOS 15 is the ability to copy text from pretty much anything.

Within the Photos app, you can click on a little icon in the bottom right of each picture to copy text from within the photo. If you’re in Safari, you can tap and hold onto text in images and, in pretty much every case, the phone will be able to copy it accurately.

You can also highlight phone numbers to instantly call them or addresses to get directions in Maps.

Spotlight search is the real way to get around your iPhone in 2021

If you’re not already utilizing the power of Spotlight Search on iPhone, you should really start with iOS 15.

When you pull down on the home screen in the new update, you can search for pretty much anything now. This includes the web, your photos, contacts and messages, among many other sources. You can even now use it from the iOS lock screen.

Auto translate

The iOS translate app can automatically detect when a person is speaking and will begin translation immediately. Since you can also select text in images and other things in iOS 15, you can also translate them quite easily.

This isn’t the new Safari iWanted

The new design is on the left and the old is on the right.

When Apple first revealed iOS 15 and its other software updates earlier this summer, it planned to revamp the look of Safari on all of them. While I was really excited about these visual changes, the world, apparently, was not.

The first version of iOS 15 safari was a simple bubble that floated at the bottom of the screen. If you tapped on the bubble, you could search using Google. There was also a three-dot menu and a button to see all your open tabs. Swiping across the bubble also allowed users to jump through all their open tabs quickly. This functionality, thankfully, is still in iOS 15.

The search bubble didn’t last, and instead, Apple replaced it with a much more accessible and technical-looking bottom navbar. While this version might not look as nice, it’s likely going to be a lot easier for people to adapt to.

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 releases on September 20

Shortly after Apple’s iPhone 13 reveal event, the tech giant confirmed that iPhone users can expect the release of iOS 15 on September 20th.

iOS 15 includes a new ‘Focus Mode,’ a refreshed Safari design and a subtle revamp to how notifications work. iPad users will also receive the same updates with iPadOS 15, plus they can now move Widgets anywhere on the Home Screen and access quick notes with an Apple Pencil. iPad users can also take advantage of the App Library that debuted on the iPhone last year with iPadOS 15.

However, features like SharePlay and the new ProRes Video file type won’t be part of the first iOS 15 update and will release later. The company released the ProRaw photo file type last fall a few months after the release of iOS 14.

You can read more about iOS 15 here, iPadOS 15 here, and you can see a full list of what devices are compatible with the new software here.

It’s also worth noting that watchOS 8 also releases on September 20th.
