The fastest ways to open the camera on Android and iOS

It doesn’t matter if you shoot photos on iOS or Android, nearly every modern smartphone features a stellar camera packed into its rear, but half of the battle is getting the device out of your pocket and opening the shooter fast enough to catch that special moment.

Both mobile operating systems are rife with quick access toggles and gestures to launch their respective camera apps without tapping on the main camera app. These are some of the more common ways we use to snap pictures in a flash:

Android

On Android, the situation varies depending on what device you own, but there are still a few constants that prevail across nearly all modern Android smartphones.

My favourite way to open the camera on Android is to double-tap the power button. This is easily the fastest way to open a camera and has allowed me to snap pictures and videos that I would have likely missed if I was using an iPhone.

Some Android phones also allow you to add a camera button to your quick toggles in the notifications shade, but this isn’t the case with all devices. Another thing that’s pretty random and misaligned across Android is gestures to open the camera. For instance, OnePlus devices can be set up so if you draw an ‘O’ on your lock screen, the camera opens. However, I’ve never found this feature to be particularly useful.

I’d recommend just using the double tap on the power button for most people since it’s the fastest route.

iPhone

Beyond tapping on the classic camera app, there are a few other ways to launch the mobile camera with an iPhone and iOS 15.

With the first method, you’re greeted with is a small camera icon at the bottom right of your lock screen. If you tap and hold on this icon, it quickly opens up the camera. This is the fastest way to take a picture if your iPhone is off. Opening the camera this way also prevents others from going through your camera roll if you have a password.

The other abstract way to open the camera is from the ‘Control Centre.’ On iPhone X and newer devices that don’t feature a physical Touch ID button, you can access this by swiping down from the top right-hand side of your screen. Then, you should see a camera icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap that, and the app will launch. With older iPhones that still have a Home Button, you’ll need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Centre.

If you don’t see the camera icon, you can add it to Control Centre by navigating to your device’s settings app, selecting Control Centre and adding the camera.

Sometimes I’ll also pull down to use the iPhone search function to pull up the camera, but I get by between these two methods and the default app.

I’ll also mention that if you take a ‘Live photo’ with your iPhone (the ones that move a bit like a gif), you can readjust the images in the Apple Photos app to choose a slightly earlier frame as the main photo.

Apple’s iOS/iPadOS 15.2.1 update fixes HomeKit flaw that crashed devices

Apple rolled out iOS and iPadOS 15.2.1 on Wednesday. The minor update brings several bug fixes, including a patch for a denial-of-service vulnerability found in HomeKit.

Trevor Spiniolas discovered the vulnerability and published details about it on January 1st. At the time, Spiniolas accused Apple of being slow to respond to his initial disclosure, which he made in August 2021. The bug affects iOS and iPadOS versions as far back as 14.7 and possibly earlier versions too — iPhone and iPad owners should update their devices to avoid the bug.

The vulnerability, if exploited, would lead to HomeKit devices with really long names crashing iPhones and iPads. HomeKit is an API used for connecting smart home gadgets to iOS devices, and it backs up device names to iCloud. That means users hit with the problem would experience it again if they re-connected that same iCloud account.

Apple published a security notice for the iOS 15.2.1 update — it only lists the HomeKit issue and notes the following fix: “A resource exhaustion issue was addressed with improved input validation.”

However, there are other items in the 15.2.1 update. According to The Verge, the patch also fixes a bug that impacted the performance of third-party CarPlay apps and a bug that stopped the Messages app from loading certain photos sent through iCloud.

To download the update, open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad > Tap ‘General’ > Tap ‘Software Update.’

Forza Street mobile game shutting down in Spring 2022

Xbox is shutting down its Forza Street game on Android and iOS, under two years after it first released.

Developer Turn 10 confirmed the news in a Q&A post on the official Forza support site, adding that the racing game will remain playable until Spring 2022. A specific closure date was not provided.

“We’re proud and grateful for the community of players we were able to build with Forza Street, and we want to use what we learned on building new and exciting Forza products,” Turn 10 wrote in response to why the game is closing.

Ahead of this, Turn 10 has also rolled out the final update for the game, which includes:

  • A new unreleased car
  • 12 weeks of Spotlight++ featuring Rare & Epic cars, starting on January 17th, 2022
  • Faster Energy recharge and increased Energy storage
  • Reduced wait times on car shows
  • Reduced prices on the vast majority of items purchased with in-game currency

This is the latest Microsoft mobile game to shut down, following the closure of both Minecraft Earth and Gears Pop last year. That said, the company seems to be focused more on Xbox Cloud Gaming on mobile. Available through a $16.99 CAD/month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, Xbox Cloud Gaming allows you to stream dozens of games to mobile devices, including Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite and Minecraft Earth.

While it’s unclear how many people use Cloud Gaming overall, the company revealed in December that 20 percent of the service’s overall player base uses touch controls.

Apple says developers have earned more than $260 billion in the App Store since 2008

Apple says that App Store developers have earned more than $260 billion USD (about $329 billion CAD) since the store launched back in 2008, according to a press release from the tech giant.

Last year, Apple revealed that developers made $200 billion USD (roughly $253 billion CAD) since the App Store’s creation, indicating that in 2021, the platform made $60 billion (approximately $76 billion CAD). The tech giant went on to say that between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2021, revenue grew in the double-digits, though it doesn’t offer specific numbers in its press release.

While the App Store seems to have experienced a big 12-months amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 30 percent revenue cut Apple takes from all apps and subscriptions sold on the platform came under fire this year. The tech giant is also still involved in a legal battle with Fortnite developer Epic Games regarding the App Store. Given the Epic vs. Apple ruling is currently on hold, it’s unclear when Apple will be forced to allow developers to offer alternate payment methods through apps offered in the App Store.

Apple’s press release also mentions there are now more than 745 million paid subscriptions to its various services, including Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud, Apple TV+ and more. Though the tech giant doesn’t offer a breakdown of subscriber numbers, this is good news for Apple as it continues to transition to being a services-focused company.

Twitter testing video reaction feature with select iOS users

Twitter is testing a new way for users to share their thoughts on the app.

The social media company announced it’s testing a “quote tweet with reaction feature” with some iOS users.

This allows users to retweet with a video reaction rather than text. Users simply have to tap the retweet icon to reveal the new feature. A photo or video can be added and will appear behind the tweet when published.

The company is taking cues from TikTok and Instagram, as both apps have similar tools for recording reactions. This seems to be the new norm now, as TikTok also recently announced it was testing a new repost feature, which shares similarities to Twitter’s retweet feature.

The announcement came through a series of tweets on the company’s support account, leading some to question why this was only available on iOS. One user felt the iOS app was being changed to “a completely separate thing.”

It’s not clear if testing will open to Android users.

Meta now listed as Facebook developer on Google Play and App Store

Earlier this year, Facebook was rebranded as Meta, and now the change is reflected on the Google Play Store and iOS.

First reported by Android Police, apps directly associated with Facebook, such as the Messenger app, now list ‘Meta Platforms, Inc.’ as their developer. Previously, Facebook was listed as the developer.

The change only seems to apply to apps directly connected with the Facebook name. While Whatsapp and Instagram are also part of the Facebook family, they aren’t listed as being developed by Meta Platforms, Inc.

MobileSyrup has noted the same change also applies to iOS. While Facebook and Messenger have a change in developer, Instagram lists ‘Instagram, Inc.’ as the developer. WhatsApp lists ‘WhatsApp Inc.’

According to 9to5Google, the change reflects the recent updates in the corporation’s identity and won’t necessarily change the Facebook experience.

Rocket League Sideswipe now available on mobile

Rocket League Sideswipe, a new take on the popular vehicular soccer game, is now available on mobile.

The free-to-play title translates the Rocket League experience into the 2D space, rather than the 3D arenas of the main console and PC game. Sideswipe features a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen, while jump and boost buttons are found on the right.

To further streamline the experience, cars auto-regenerate their boosts, so there’s no need to seek out pads to do so like you would in the main game. The game also features a basketball-style “Hoops” mode on top of its signature soccer-focused offerings.

Sideswipe can be downloaded for free on Android and iOS.

Twitter looking into iOS app bug that logs users out multiple times a day

Twitter is looking into a weird bug with its iOS app that repeatedly logs users out.

In a tweet, the company confirmed it was looking into the issue and apologized for the inconvenience. Twitter says the bug impacts users on iOS 15, but that’s the extent of what Twitter shared in its post.

9to5Mac elaborates, noting the bug seems to have hit several users, many of which claim the app logged them out multiple times. Moreover, affected users with multiple Twitter accounts report that the bug logs out all their accounts. The bug can strike several times a day.

While not a huge deal as far as issues go, Twitter’s log-out bug is incredibly annoying. So far, there doesn’t seem to be any recourse besides waiting for Twitter to push out a fix. Hopefully, that happens soon.
