Costco slashes iPhone 12 series price, other retailers might follow

Now that Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup has released, the price of the last-gen iPhone 12 series — which is almost identical to the current-gen models in some ways — is experiencing a price drop.

First shared by RedFlagDeals users ‘DJ Trance AZ,‘ Costco is one of the first Canadian retailers to slash a few dollars of the iPhone 12 series.

Check Costco’s pricing below:

It’s worth noting that the deals are exclusive to Costco members only. Still, if you are a member, the savings are pretty great and considering that the iPhone 13 includes very incremental upgrades, last year’s Apple flagship is still an excellent device.

If you want to read about the major differences between the iPhone 12 and 13 series, check out our comparison story.

The A15 Bionic is faster on iPhone 13 than new iPad mini

Both the new iPad mini and Apple’s iPhone 13 series all use relatively the same A15 Bionic chipset, but it’s now come to light that the iPhones are actually more powerful than the tablet.

The iPad mini and the iPhone 13 Pro series all have a 5 core GPU unit as opposed to a 4-core version in the regular iPhone 13. That being said, it looks like Apple has clocked down the chip inside the new tiny tablet.

The tablet’s CPU clocks in at 2.9 GHz while the iPhone 13 Pro has a speed of 3.2 GHz, according to some Geekbench benchmark tests. The tests say that the difference between the devices is two to eight percent, so this may just be a margin of error found in testing.

It will be interesting to see if iPad mini users notice the lower clock speed once the device actually makes it into people’s hands later this month. The chip is still faster than Apple’s A14 Bionic from last year so it should still be plenty quick enough for most everyday tasks.

You can learn more about the iPad mini by reading our prior coverage and stay tuned to MobileSyrup for a full review coming soon.

256GB iPhone SE option mysteriously disappears from the Apple Store

Shortly after revealing the iPhone 13 series, the iPad mini and the iPad during its ‘California streaming’ event, Apple quietly removed the highest-tier storage capacity option for the iPhone SE.

Previously, the iPhone 13 was available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options. However now, only 64GB and 128GB iPhone SE storage variants are listed in the Apple Store.

It’s unclear why Apple opted to get rid of the 256GB storage option, but it likely has something to do with it ramping down production in preparation for the possible launch of a new iPhone SE at some point in 2022.

The 64GB iPhone SE costs $569 and the 128GB version costs $639. For more on Apple’s iPhone SE, check out my review of the smartphone from back in April 2020.

AppleCare+ now covers iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 back glass breaking for $39

If you’re the type of person who drops their iPhone 13 or iPhone 12 device a lot and refuses to use a screen protector or a case, this is definitely good news.

AppleCare+, Apple’s extended warranty program, now covers two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Apple says that each incident includes a service fee of $39, but the key new update is that “screen or back glass damage” is included.

“AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Each incident is subject to a service fee of $39 for screen or back glass damage, or $129 for any other damage, plus applicable tax,” writes Apple.

Prior to this change, cracked or damaged back glass replacements cost in the range of $100. AppleCare+ costs $199 or $9.99 per month.

iPhone AppleCare+ repair cost

  • $199 or $9.99/month for iPhone 13 mini/iPhone 13

Apple’s new MagSafe Leather Wallet includes support for ‘Find My’

Alongside the iPhone 13, Apple has revealed several new accessories for its flagship smartphone line, including a refreshed line of cases and a new Leather Wallet with MagSafe accessory that’s compatible with its ‘Find My’ app.

This means that if you accidentally lose the magnetic wallet attachment — which can happen given it’s only stuck to the back of the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 — iOS’ Find My app will be able to find its location, just like Apple’s Bluetooth tracking AirTags accessory.

However, the MagSafe Leather Wallet can only notify users about its last known location following being separated from the iPhone rather than real-time tracking. Strangely, the fine print of the accessory notes that Find My functionality doesn’t work with the Clear Case with MagSafe, indicating that the case likely blocks the connection with the iPhone.

Like most Apple accessories, the iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe is somewhat expensive at $79. Colours include ‘Golden Brown,’ ‘Dark Cherry,’ ‘Sequoia Green,’ ‘Midnight’ and ‘Wisteria.’

Apple’s new iPhone 13 line vs. last year’s iPhone 12 series: worth the upgrade?

Apple hosted its September product event on September 14th where it unveiled the new iPhone 13 line-up.

There are a bunch of new features and changes, but as usual, we’ll also see a price drop on older iPhone models. If you’re in the market for an upgrade, it may be worth comparing the iPhone 13 and 12 lines to see if the new features are worth the extra money, or if you can scoop up an older model for less.

Let’s start with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Perhaps the biggest upgrade with these over the 12 Pro and Pro Max is the new 120Hz ProMotion display. The higher refresh rate should make the 13 Pros feel much smoother than before, especially when scrolling or gaming. An added benefit of the adaptive refresh rate is it can scale down to 10Hz when you’re not interacting with the phone to reduce battery consumption.

Other improvements include Apple’s more powerful A15 Bionic chip, a larger battery and improved 5G. Apple also talked up the improve cameras, with a focus on macro photography and ‘Cinematic Mode.’

As for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, Apple’s more affordable iPhones also sport the new A15, offer longer battery life and improved cameras. The non-Pro iPhone 13 models gained the sensor shift tech from last year’s iPhone 12 Pro line, which should help with low-light performance. Unfortunately, neither the iPhone 13 or 13 mini have 120Hz displays, which is a bummer.

Oh, and perhaps most important of all, all the new iPhones have about 20 percent smaller notches. Apple hasn’t gone for a hole-punch camera cut-out or under-display tech yet, but hey, I’ll take any notch reduction I can get.

Really, whether or not the new iPhones are worth it over last year’s models comes down to what you care about in a phone. If you want the absolute cutting-edge camera performance, the 13 Pro phones are for you. Similarly, if high refresh-rate displays are something you care about, the 13 Pro devices will be your best option. If you’re more interested in getting a good deal, or don’t really care about the camera or refresh rate, you may be better off saving some money and picking up a discounted iPhone 12.

If you’re interested, you can learn more about the iPhone 13 Pros here and the regular iPhone 13 models here.
