Apple discontinues iPhone 12 Pro and XR after iPhone 13 reveal

Following the reveal of the iPhone 13, Apple is no longer selling the iPhone XR or the 12 Pro on its website.

The phones being discontinued isn’t exactly surprising, given that Apple regularly does this when it introduces new models, particularly the Pro. The XR was also introduced in October 2018, so it’s nearly three years old at this point.

However, you can still order refurbished units of the 12 Pro and XR.

The iPhone 11, 12 and SE will continue to be sold, making them the lowest-cost options.

Apple’s new iPhone 13 line vs. last year’s iPhone 12 series: worth the upgrade?

Apple hosted its September product event on September 14th where it unveiled the new iPhone 13 line-up.

There are a bunch of new features and changes, but as usual, we’ll also see a price drop on older iPhone models. If you’re in the market for an upgrade, it may be worth comparing the iPhone 13 and 12 lines to see if the new features are worth the extra money, or if you can scoop up an older model for less.

Let’s start with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Perhaps the biggest upgrade with these over the 12 Pro and Pro Max is the new 120Hz ProMotion display. The higher refresh rate should make the 13 Pros feel much smoother than before, especially when scrolling or gaming. An added benefit of the adaptive refresh rate is it can scale down to 10Hz when you’re not interacting with the phone to reduce battery consumption.

Other improvements include Apple’s more powerful A15 Bionic chip, a larger battery and improved 5G. Apple also talked up the improve cameras, with a focus on macro photography and ‘Cinematic Mode.’

As for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, Apple’s more affordable iPhones also sport the new A15, offer longer battery life and improved cameras. The non-Pro iPhone 13 models gained the sensor shift tech from last year’s iPhone 12 Pro line, which should help with low-light performance. Unfortunately, neither the iPhone 13 or 13 mini have 120Hz displays, which is a bummer.

Oh, and perhaps most important of all, all the new iPhones have about 20 percent smaller notches. Apple hasn’t gone for a hole-punch camera cut-out or under-display tech yet, but hey, I’ll take any notch reduction I can get.

Really, whether or not the new iPhones are worth it over last year’s models comes down to what you care about in a phone. If you want the absolute cutting-edge camera performance, the 13 Pro phones are for you. Similarly, if high refresh-rate displays are something you care about, the 13 Pro devices will be your best option. If you’re more interested in getting a good deal, or don’t really care about the camera or refresh rate, you may be better off saving some money and picking up a discounted iPhone 12.

If you’re interested, you can learn more about the iPhone 13 Pros here and the regular iPhone 13 models here.

Apple introduces Cinematic Mode with the new iPhone 13 lineup

At its annual event, dubbed ‘California Streaming’ for this year, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 13 with a diagonal dual-camera setup, a sleek, flat-edged design similar to the iPhone 12 lineup, a bigger battery along 28 percent brighter Super Retina XDR displays.

Apple says the iPhone 13 and 13 mini will incorporate last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max’s Sensor-Shift Camera Stabilization tech along with new video capabilities, including a new Cinematic Mode.

The new mode features rack focus and will be useful for content creators or filmmakers. The mode recognizes when a person enters the frame or when your subject is facing the camera and when not and accordingly blurs and focuses the background.

Apple’s iPhone 13 event stream will take place in the desert

Hopefully, this isn’t some sort of obscure promotional image for an upcoming U2 album.

Just ahead of Apple’s big iPhone 13 reveal stream, Tim Cook, the tech giant’s CEO, tweeted an image of what seems to be a desert, confirming the event’s “California streaming” theme.

Alongside revealing the pre-recorded stream’s setting, Cook also showed off the new Twitter #AppleEvent hashtag that animates into an Apple logo before transforming into a heart when you click on it. Apple also featured a similar Twitter hashtag animation during the tech giant’s iPhone 12 reveal event.

Apple’s event is set to start at 10am PT/1PM ET. During the stream, the tech giant is expected to reveal the iPhone 13 series, the Apple Watch Series 7 and new AirPods.

For a recap of what to expect at the event, follow this link.

Leaked photos reveal new iPhone 13 case colours

Despite the fact that Apple’s iPhone 13 event is just a day away, leaks regarding the tech giant’s next iPhone are still appearing.

Following a rumour that the largest storage option for the iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 13 Pro Max will be 1TB, we’ve caught a glimpse of very official-looking leaked cases for Apple’s upcoming smartphone line.

Shared on Twitter via an account called @MajinBuOfficial, the images include a screenshot and a photo of several iPhone 13 cases. The colour options look very similar to last year’s official Apple iPhone 12 cases save for a few new additions, including a cool-looking orange option.

The cases show off the same rather large square cutout featured in the iPhone 12 series and squared-off edges, which backs up rumours regarding the smartphone.

At the tech giant’s September 14th event, Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 13 series, the Apple Watch Series 7 and new AirPods.

Apple will reportedly start selling all 24-inch iMac (2021) colours in its retail stores

While Apple’s upcoming ‘California Streaming’ event will likely be focused on the tech giant’s iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7 and AirPods, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will also reportedly announce that it will soon be possible to buy every version of Apple’s colourful 24-inch iMac in-store.

This means that all seven 24-inch iMac colours, including ‘Blue,’ ‘Green,’ ‘Pink,’ ‘Silver,’ ‘Yellow,’ ‘Orange,’ ‘Purple,’ will all be available to purchase directly in Apple Stores. Additional colours will also now be available through third-party retailers like Best Buy. Previously, certain colours, like Yellow, Purple and Orange, needed to be ordered online, despite display units being present in stores.

When I reviewed Apple’s colourful iMac a few months ago, I was impressed with the redesign but disappointed with its lack of ports and expensive price tag. A 27-inch iMac with a more powerful version of Apple’s M1 chip and a discrete graphics card is reportedly in the works.

At Apple’s upcoming September 14th hardware event, we likely won’t get any news regarding new Macs, including the often-rumoured 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro redesign. The reveal of Apple’s redesigned MacBook line that reportedly includes an SD card reader and a new version of MagSafe, will reportedly happen in October or November.

Apple Watch Series 8 will reportedly feature body temperature sensors

Even though the Apple Watch Series 7 hasn’t officially been revealed yet, we’re already encountering rumours surrounding next year’s inevitable Series 8.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s 2022 Apple Watch will feature several new health sensors, including body temperature measurement. Past rumours have also suggested that glucose monitoring could also finally make its way to the Apple Watch with the Series 8.

Along with rumours surrounding the Series 8, Kuo says that health features are coming to Apple’s AirPods in two years. However, it’s unclear what version of the AirPods will receive the features. Earlier reports have stated that the next version of Apple’s AirPods Pro will include new motion sensors and built-in fitness tracking.

It’s also possible that Apple could have plans to release a fitness-focused version of its standard AirPods, though given the 3rd-gen AirPods are rumoured to be revealed later this week, that’s unlikely.

Rumours also recently appeared regarding Apple’s plans to increase the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max’s top storage tier to 1TB. For more on Apple’s September 14th event, check out my round-up of everything we expect to see during the stream.

Apple’s iPhone 13 could offer 1TB storage option

It looks like Apple could have plans to increase the iPhone’s highest tier storage option with the iPhone 13.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will be available in a 1TB storage option alongside 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options. Given the iPhone 12 Pro with 512GB of storage costs $1,809, this year’s 1TB storage option will likely cost in the range of $2,000.

Kuo says that the iPhone 13 and 13 mini will start at 128GB of storage instead of 64GB like the current iPhone 12 and 12 mini. The analyst also mentions that they expect the entry-level smartphones to be offered in a 512GB tier for the first time.

Finally, Kuo says that Apple’s 2nd-gen AirPods will stick around as a cheaper option despite the introduction of third-generation AirPods. It’s unclear if the 2nd-gen AirPods ($269) will receive a price drop or if the new AirPods will cost more money. Earlier leaks indicate that Apple’s new AirPods will look very similar to the current AirPods Pro, including shorter stems, an in-ear design and possibly even active noise-cancellation.

Apple’s September 14th hardware event is just around the corner. The tech giant is expected to reveal the iPhone 13 series, the Apple Watch Series 7 and new AirPods.

Here are the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 14 leaks from this past week

Images, renders and videos of upcoming smartphones continuously leak. All of these leaks can be difficult to follow, so we’ve compiled a list of the past week’s hottest rumours.

From September 4th to September 10th, we saw a couple of leaks about the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 14 and even a Pixel 6 teaser.

Below are all the major smartphone leaks from September 4th to September 10th:

Apple

According to PineLeaks, a Twitter account run by Max Weinbach, Apple could solve the mini’s battery life issue with the iPhone 13 mini.

Weinbach says that the iPhone 13 mini will offer an “additional 1 hour of battery life,” indicating that either through software optimization or more likely, cramming a larger battery into the smartphone’s case, the company has managed to extend the mini’s battery life.

For more on the Apple iPhone mini, click here.

Apple’s iPhone 14 will reportedly lack both a notch and a camera bump.

Instead, the smartphone will sport a Samsung-like front-facing hole-punch camera. The iPhone 14 is also tipped to feature a slightly thicker body, allowing its several lenses, flash, and LiDAR scanner to sit flush with the phone’s rear.

For more on this leak,  click here.

Google

Google has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, giving fans a first look at the device being used in the real world. While this isn’t really a leak in the traditional sense, it’s still pretty cool.

Google also posted a picture on Instagram that said Tuesday the 19th, which indicates that the next Pixel will launch on October 19th.
