Rogers offering $0 iPhone 14 with trade-in, Upfront Edge

Rogers customers can get a 128GB iPhone 14 for $0 down and $0/mo financing, though with several caveats.

First up, you need to go to a Rogers store to get the deal. That alone isn’t terrible, but you also have to sign up for Upfront Edge, which discounts the cost of the phone if you agree to return it to Rogers after 24 months (or pay the difference to keep it). Finally, customers need to “trade in an eligible iPhone 11 Pro 512 GB.”

According to the fine print, Rogers is offering a $360 trade-in credit for the iPhone 11 Pro 512GB. If you don’t go with the trade-in, you can pay $360 upfront instead, although that defeats the purpose of the deal.

It’s worth noting that for those who don’t want to go into the store, Rogers also offers the iPhone 14 for $15/mo online, down from the regular $47.13/mo financing cost. You can also still trade in a 512GB iPhone 11 Pro for a $360 credit, which would cover the $15/mo financing. Based on the information on Rogers’ website, I’m not totally sure what the difference is here beyond maybe that doing a trade-in online takes more time because you need to mail in the phone.

If you’re good with all those conditions, then congrats — you can get an effectively free iPhone 14 for two years.

You can check out the offer here.

Apple’s iPhone 15 series to place proximity sensor in the Dynamic Island

Apple’s iPhone 15 will reportedly upgrade the Dynamic Island by moving the proximity sensor inside the phone’s housing.

Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the iPhone 15 models will feature a Dynamic Island design similar to the iPhone 14 Pro’s, but with the proximity sensor placed within the cutout.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s proximity sensor is hidden under the display outside of the Dynamic Island. Despite the iPhone 15 models including the proximity sensor within the Dynamic Island, there will be no change to the island’s size.

Kuo reports that the iPhone 15 will offer a 940nm wavelength instead of the 138nm featured in the current iPhone 14 Pro. Further, Kuo says it’s unclear why Apple plans to make this change. It’s possible that this could make the phone more affordable to manufacture, but it’s unclear.

Recent leaks indicate the iPhone 15 Pro Max is reported to feature the smallest bezels yet on any smartphone. Apple will likely reveal its iPhone 15 series this coming fall.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus reportedly sold better than the iPhone 13 mini

With its iPhone 14 series, Apple ditched the iPhone 13 mini in favour of the larger iPhone 14 Plus. Though the company hasn’t revealed official sales numbers, the undeniably cute 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini is believed not to have sold well, leading to Apple taking a chance on the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus in 2021 (it seems everyone that demanded a smaller iPhone didn’t actually purchase the device).

Fast-forward several months following the 14 Plus’ release, and it appears that — if the latest report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC is accurate — this gamble paid off, and there is a market out there for a bigger base-level iPhone.

According to the DSCC, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus shipments are 59 percent higher than the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini over the same year-over-year period. This data contradicts earlier reports indicating the iPhone 14 Plus was not selling as well as Apple had hoped.

With this in mind, DSCC’s report indicates that while the iPhone 14 Plus has surpassed the iPhone 13 mini’s sales, it’s still well behind the iPhone 14 Pro Max with just 11 percent of overall shipments. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max holds 36 percent of overall display shipments, the iPhone 14 Pro holds 28 percent, and the iPhone 14 has 25 percent of overall shipments.

It’s believed that with the iPhone 15 series, Apple will stick with the current size lineup for its devices, including the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which some rumours indicate could be called the iPhone 15 Ultra.

When I spent time with the iPhone 14 Plus earlier this year, I was impressed with the device and felt like it had the potential to sell better than the mini series given the modern smartphone industry’s focus on big, expansive displays. That said, I still missed the optical zoom the iPhone 14 Pro/Max offer.

Apple’s ‘Yellow’ iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are a sight to behold

Apple’s mid-year, base-level iPhone colour upgrade has arrived — and this time, it’s “Yellow.”

Both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus are available in Yellow, and follow the ‘Purple’ iPhone 12/iPhone 12 mini from 2021 and the ‘Green’ and ‘Alpine Green’ iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, respectively, from last year.

To be clear, there is no additional iPhone 14 Pro/iPhone 14 Pro Max colour option this year, with the iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Plus only getting Yellow.

This new Yellow colour rounds out the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus’ lineup to include: ‘Starlight,’ ‘Midnight,’ ‘Product Red,’ Blue’ and, of course, Yellow.

While the new Yellow hue doesn’t feature the same ’70s-inspired pastel tone as 2018’s iPhone XR, one of my favourite smartphone colours ever, it’s still appealing. It’s a deep Yellow that looks particularly intense under both shadows and direct sunlight, and stands out in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus lineup as one of the smartphones’ more interesting designs.

Even the flat aluminum sides of the Yellow iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Plus look great and reflect the light in a unique way that only the Purple and Blue hue are capable of replicating.

With all that said, though, this is still just a new colour for the same iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus that were released back in late 2022.

For more on the iPhone 14, check out my review of the smartphone, and for a look at the iPhone 14 Plus, check out this story.

Apple’s iPhone 14 starts at $1,099 and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $1,249.

Apple’s iPhone 15 reportedly won’t feature 120Hz ProMotion display

If you were hoping Apple would finally bring its 120Hz ProMotion display technology to its lower-end iPhones, you’ll likely be disappointed with the tech giant’s iPhone 15 lineup.

According to tech news aggregator ‘yeux122’ and South Korean blog, Naver, similar to last year, Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will feature a standard OLED display that doesn’t include the LPTO technology required for Promotion. In comparison, vase-level, but still high-end Android devices, including, most notably, the Galaxy S23 and Pixel 7, offer 120Hz and 90Hz display refresh rates, respectively, and have done so for years.

This means that once again, only Apple’s high-end iPhone models — rumoured to be called the iPhone 15 Pro and, possibly, the iPhone 15 Ultra — will feature a 120Hz refresh rate.

While this isn’t entirely surprising, given Apple always keeps some features exclusive to its higher-end devices, it’s still disappointing to see the tech giant so far behind its key Android competitors regarding the display technology featured in its base-level devices.

Apple will likely reveal the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus this coming fall. The tech giant recently revealed a new ‘Yellow’ iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

Customers will soon be able to purchase the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus in yellow.

Each device was already available in ‘Midnight,’ ‘Purple,’ ‘Product Red,’ ‘Blue,’ and ‘Starlight.’

While the colour is the only difference between the devices, it’s admittedly the perfect option for spring.

iPhone 14 Crash Detection helped response team locate Tasmania car accident

Apple’s ‘Crash Detection’ feature built into the iPhone 14 is reported to have helped Tasmanian authorities locate a severe car accident. In response to an accident involving a pickup truck towing a horse box, authorities were able to locate five people involved and have them taken to a hospital for treatment.

Off the coast of Australia, on the island state of Tasmania, a pickup truck occupied by five people was involved in a car crash. At around 1:45 am, the vehicle in question hit a tree stump on the Batman Highway at Rowella. Of the five occupants, one or more were left unconscious while each of them was injured in various ways. The horse box that was being towed had been housing four horses. Unfortunately, due to the box rolling over during the crash, none survived.

Tasmanian authorities were able to respond to the crash quickly and effectively thanks in part to Apple’s Crash Detection feature. According to an ABC News report, police were “automatically notified via a crash detection feature on one of the passengers’ iPhones.” Police arrived on the scene within eight minutes.

Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr later followed up, stating that police were already “in the area on an unrelated matter.” However, the built-in iPhone 14 feature can undoubtedly help save lives. “In a case where people had lost consciousness in a crash like this, it is certainly something that alerts police quickly.”

Upon the launch of the iPhone 14, Apple introduced two potentially life-saving features. On top of Crash Detection, which alerts authorities when triggered, Emergency SOS via Satellite was also presented. In the event that a user is outside of cellular coverage, users can make emergency calls to get help.

However, while both features have helped users around the world in life-threatening situations, they aren’t foolproof. It’s been shown that Crash Detection has been accidentally triggered simply by riding rollercoasters or even while skiing and snowboarding. A false alert also led to an extended helicopter search in B.C.

These false alerts have become a nuisance for Apple and local emergency services. The Cupertino company has had to issue “Crash Detection optimizations” via iOS 16.1.2. Crash Detection is turned on by default on iPhone 14 and is also supported across the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE (2022). Alerts can be turned off via the Settings menu and Emergency SOS tab. Users can then opt to turn off Call After Severe Crash.

Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite saves stranded snowmobiler

A snowmobiler in Alaska is believed to be the first person to use Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite.

As reported by 9to5Mac, Alaska State Troopers were notified of an alert in the early morning hours of December 1st. It came through the Apple Emergency Response Center, notifying them of an adult male activating the feature on their iPhone after being stranded.

Volunteer searchers were sent “to the Nimiuk Point area directly to the GPS coordinates provided by the Apple Emergency Response Center,” a report from Alaska’s Department of Public Safety states.

Searchers successfully located the male.

Apple launched the feature a matter of weeks ago. It’s available on the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models in Canada and the U.S. and connects the devices with satellites when out of reach of cellular networks.

Skiing can trigger your iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature

Following Apple’s new ‘Crash Detection’ falsely detecting crashes when the wearer is riding a roller coaster, it’s been discovered that the feature also gives false positives when the user is enjoying winter sports like skiing.

For those unaware, Apple introduced Crash Detection alongside the iPhone 14 series at its latest fall hardware event. The feature is only available with the iPhone 14 series, the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE (2022) and alerts nearby authorities when it detects that you’ve been in a crash.

Previously, roller coasters were found to be simulating the impact of a car crash and alerting nearby authorities. Now, as reported by KSL (via MacRumors), winter sports enthusiasts in Park City, Utah, have been inadvertently triggering Crash Detection while skiing and snowboarding. “Summit County dispatchers are seeing an uptick in accidental emergency calls from skiers,” reads KSL‘s report.

Summit County Dispatch Center supervisor Suzie Butterfield says she receives three to five false emergency calls because of the Crash Detection technology per day, out of which non have been due to an actual crash. “They usually have no idea that they’ve even called us,” Butterfield said.

Similarly, there have been mentions of the feature going off while skiing on Reddit.

Butterfield insists, even after the false positives, that users should keep the feature on if they’re going to enjoy a day of winter sports. She considers the feature to be a preventive tool, instead of an inconvenience or nuisance. “We do not want you to turn the feature off,” Butterfield said. “We would rather have you be safe. We don’t mind taking that call because if something really did happen, we want to be able to get to you.”

Apple has also released a new iOS 16.1.2 update, which includes “Crash Detection optimizations.” It’s currently unknown how much the update helps in preventing false positives.

Get free AirPods (2nd gen) when you buy an iPhone 14 from Bell

Bell is offering free AirPods (2nd gen) for customers who activate an iPhone 14 on Bell SmartPay with an eligible two-year plan.

Unfortunately, the deal is only for new activations and is only available while supplies last. Moreover, the AirPods will ship separately within four weeks of purchase. The offer is only available with the iPhone 14, so if you wanted the 14 Plus or one of the Pro models, you can’t get the free AirPods.

To get the iPhone 14 on SmartPay (Bell’s branding for device financing), you’ll need to pay either $30/mo or $45.42/mo, depending on whether you want to keep the phone or not.

The $30/mo price is for the ‘Device Return Option,’ which basically discounts the monthly cost of the phone if customers agree to return it (or pay the difference) after 24 months. In other words, you’re just paying $30/mo (or $720 over two years) to rent the iPhone 14.

For the $45.24/mo price, you’d end up paying $1,090.08 over two years, which is actually about $9 less than you’d pay to buy the iPhone 14 outright from Apple. Plus, with the free AirPods, it’s very worth it.

The Airpods (2nd gen) cost $179 on Apple’s website.

You can check out the Bell deal here. Alternatively, check out Bell’s other Black Friday offerings here and the best Canadian carrier deals here. All of our Black Friday deals can be found here.
