Apple announces iPhone 14 Pro, Pro Max with Always-On Display

As expected, Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max at its ‘Far Out’ event on September 7th.

The Cupertino, California-based company detailed a ton of new features, some surprising and others not so much. As rumoured, the Pro models sport the biggest upgrades, such as a flashy new A16 Bionic processor, camera upgrades, and more. Oh, and Apple finally ditched the notch in favour of a pill-shaped display cut-out for the selfie cam and Face ID.

As rumoured, the display cut-out can move and adapt to show notifications and other indicators, as highlighted in a teaser before and also throughout the iPhone 14 Pro announcement. Dubbed the ‘Dynamic Island,’ it can expand to show information, like an incoming call or when your AirPods connect or when it scans your face for Face ID. Users can interact with the Dynamic Island by touching and holding to view more information, like music controls.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max come in 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes with 1600 nits of brightness, the same as the Pro Display XDR. It can also hit a peak 2,000 nits brightness when outside.

Apple also finally introduced Always-On Display, years after it was popularized on Android handsets. Apple says it can operate as low as 1Hz and can intelligently dim the lock screen. The company claims its co-processors can refresh the display with new information while using minimal power.

Powerful A16 chip

Under the hood, the iPhone 14 Pro models sport the new A16 Bionic chip with nearly 16 billion transistors. A16 uses a 4nm process and is the “fastest chip ever in a smartphone,” according to Apple, with the company claiming it has up to 40 percent faster peak performance than the competition.

Apple says the A16 is also super efficient, with the efficiency cores using one-third the power of the competition.

A16 includes an all-new ‘Display Engine’ to power the new Always-On Display, Dynamic Island, and other screen-related content.

When it comes to the camera, Apple included a 65 percent larger 48-megapixel camera. It’s a ‘quad-pixel’ sensor that groups every four pixels into one quad pixel to capture more light. It’s worth noting this is a feature typically called pixel binning. It has long been available on various Android handsets, with mixed results. It’ll interesting to see how Apple improves on this. Apple also boosted the 12-megapixel telephoto lens with larger pixels.

ProRAW got improvements as well, allowing users to shoot at 48-megapixels.

As for the ultra-wide camera, the 12-megapixel sensor also features bigger pixels for better light capture and a sharper lens too. Apple says it redesigned the flash to match the focal length for better performance.

Video features include the new ‘Action Mode,’ while Cinematic Mode returns.

Apple also boasted that the iPhone 14 Pro includes all-day battery life. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are available for pre-order today and release on September 16th.

More to come…

iPhone 14 Pro display cut-out will feature camera, mic indicators: report

Another set of rumours about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 Pro suggests the company plans to move the microphone and camera indicators into the rumoured display cut-out that will appear on the new Pro iPhones.

In case you missed the ongoing stream of rumours, let me take a moment to catch you up. Yesterday, rumours began circulating about how iOS 16 would handle the rumoured display cut-outs on the iPhone 14 Pro. Based on previous reports, most thought that there would be two distinct cut-outs — one for the selfie camera and one for the Face ID sensors.

However, reports yesterday said this wouldn’t be the case, and the iPhone would fill the space between the two cut-outs to make it look like one large, pill-shaped cut-out. The details first emerged at MacRumors, which cited an anonymous tipster and warned it couldn’t verify the source. However, the somewhat sketchy leak gained credibility when Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman chimed in on Twitter, backing up the claim.

MacRumors also reported that Apple could use the space between and around the cut-outs to display status icons and notifications.

Now, 9to5Mac reports the “dead space” between the display cut-outs will be used for camera and mic indicators, citing a “source with knowledge of Apple’s plans.” For what it’s worth, I speculated this would happen yesterday, writing: “with knowledge of Apple’s plans.” The publication also created a mock-up of how this would look.

9to5Mac adds more to this based on information received from its source. Per the publication, the change will allow the iPhone 14 Pro line to show both camera and mic indicators at the same time (currently, iPhones just show the green camera indicator even if the microphone is also in use). Moreover, Apple plans to make the space interactable, allowing users to tap on the indicators to view a list of apps using the camera and microphone. Possibly, it could show a history of which apps recently accessed the camera and microphone too.

Finally, 9to5 says Apple plans to redesign the camera app and move the majority of the controls to the top of the screen:

“Controls such as the flash button and Live Photo button are now positioned in the status bar, while more granular photo and video settings are directly below the display cutouts. This change will give users a larger view of the camera preview by shifting the controls upwards and moving some of them into the status bar.”

With multiple sources corroborating this information, it seems increasingly likely that Apple does plan to implement software changes like this for the iPhone 14 Pro display cut-outs. That said, it’s important to note that these are software changes, which means they can change. 9to5 admits as much, noting that it was told the camera app redesign isn’t “entirely locked in.”

Everything we expect to see at Apple’s fall 2022 event

It’s almost that time of year again.

On September 7th at 1pm ET/10am PT, Apple will hold its ‘Far Out’ keynote at its Cupertino, California campus. While the presentation will feature pre-recorded sections, it’s also the first Apple event with live portions in years.

As always, we have a pretty good idea of what we might see at this year’s fall keynote, including the iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Pro, 2nd-gen AirPods Pro and several new Apple Watches, including the redesigned Apple Watch Pro.

Let’s get into it.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

Rumours have been swirling about Apple’s iPhone 14 line for months now. First off, the iPhone mini line is being killed off this year in favour of the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, which will be sold alongside the 6.1-inch iPhone 14.

Apple’s iPhone 14 devices are expected to look very similar to last year, including the visible notch and even the same A15 chip. According to reports, only Apple’s higher-end iPhone 14 Pro models will offer the tech giant’s new A16 processor.

The iPhone 14 will also likely be available in various colours.

On the other hand, Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are set to feature more notable upgrades. According to Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman, alongside a new A16 chip, Apple’s ‘Pro’ iPhones will ditch the front-facing notch for a pill-shaped camera cutout that houses a 48-megapixel wide shooter capable of capturing 8K video, alongside a circular Face ID sensor.

Some reports indicate Apple plans to fill the display space between the pill-shaped cutout and the circular sensor through software, which, if true, is the most Apple move of all time.

Other rumoured iPhone 14 features include stronger magnets that power exclusive MagSafe accessories that only work with iPhone 14 devices, and emergency calling satellite connectivity.

Apple Watch Pro, Series 8 and SE 2

Next, there’s the slew of new smartwatches that could appear at Apple’s upcoming event.

First off, there’s the Apple Watch Pro, a new high-end, Garmin-like take on the Apple Watch. The more durable version of Apple’s smartwatch is rumoured to feature a flat display and a 1.99-inch screen, making it the largest Apple Watch yet.

Other Apple Watch Pro rumours include that the wearable could offer satellite connectivity, though most reports point to this functionality coming to the high-end smartwatch next year. And finally, there’s a possibility that the Apple Watch Pro might not fit seamlessly with older Watch Bands, marking the first time since the wearable’s launch that older straps won’t work with a new Apple Watch.

Other rumoured Apple Watch Pro features include a new S8 chip and a body temperature sensor, which should also be coming to the Series 8 if rumours are accurate. Overall, the Apple Watch Series 8 is tipped to look and function like the Series 7, with most of the upgrades being on the hardware side.

Finally, there’s the Apple Watch SE 2. Rumours regarding Apple’s entry-level wearable are pretty sparse, but there’s a possibility it could be upgraded with an always-on display and a newer chip since the current version of the smartwatch still features an S5 processor.

2nd-gen AirPods Pro

Like the Apple Watch SE 2, rumours surrounding the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro are few and far between. It’s believed that Apple’s new high-end wireless earbuds will feature shorter stems, upgraded mics, improved sound quality and better battery life.

Some reports highlight a new charging case with USB-C charging and lossless audio support. While we haven’t seen many leaks regarding new AirPods Pro, given the wireless earbuds released back in 2019, they’re arguably long overdue for an upgrade.

iPads, iPad Pro/M2 MacBook Pro, new HomePod and AR headset

Most rumours point to Apple once again holding several keynotes this coming fall, with September 7th’s event focused on the iPhone 14, Apple Watch Pro and the AirPods Pro.

A second event set for October will likely focus on the M2-powered iPad Pro and a new HomePod, followed by a third presentation in November aimed at Apple’s M2 chip and the MacBook Pro. There’s also a possibility we might finally catch a glimpse of the company’s AR/VR headset given most rumours point to it releasing in 2023.

iPhone 14 Pro display cut-outs could be ‘unified’ through software

As a deluge of iPhone 14 rumours continues to wash over the internet, we’re starting to get reports that contradict other reports. One of particular interest is that the iPhone 14 Pro’s software will make the rumoured display cut-outs look like a large pill rather than two distinct pieces.

The detail comes from an anonymous tipster cited by MacRumors. It builds off previous rumours that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will replace the notch with a hole-punch cut-out for the front-facing camera alongside a small pill-shaped cut-out for the Face ID sensors. The two cut-outs would form a sideways ‘i’ shape.

However, this new information from MacRumors’ tipster claims that the space between the two cut-outs won’t be used when the screen is on, making it look like one cut-out instead of two separate ones. MacRumors said it discovered “chatter” across Chinese social media networks supposedly from Foxconn employees involved in the iPhone 14 Pro assembly that also mentioned the unified pill, and the publication shared the following image as an illustration of what it could look like:

Another interesting tidbit here is that, according to the tipster, Apple’s software can expand the blacked-out area to host content. As an example, the software could make the area wider or taller to incorporate status icons or to deliver certain notifications.

Although MacRumors doesn’t mention this, I could see that space being used to display things like microphone or camera indicators. Another possibility could be that the green call/hotspot indicator could move to appear around the hole-punch. Basically, any of the status icons from this page could wind up there.

iPhone call indicator | Source: Apple

Of course, this is all a rumour, and as such, you should probably be skeptical. MacRumors said it couldn’t verify the sources, so keep that in mind as well.

Ultimately, it’s interesting to think about the ways the move to a hole-punch cut-out could impact iOS. When Apple introduced the notch back on the iPhone X, it had to significantly change how the status bar worked to accommodate the new hardware. Those changes included adjustments to which icons were visible in the status bar, how users accessed things like Control Center and Notification Center, and more. As such, it wouldn’t surprise me if the hole-punch display similarly changed things up.

Leak details iPhone 14 line colour options, MagSafe improvements

With the release of Apple’s new iPhones on the horizon, the rumour mill is churning out all kinds of information. The latest: the iPhone 14 line will sport a new purple colour, an “exclusive” MagSafe battery accessory, and more.

The information comes from a post on Naver, a South Korean online platform with search and blog capabilities, among other things (it’s kind of like Google). The Naver post cites a “developer source,” (via 9to5Mac) as the backing for various claims about the upcoming iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

First up, the new colours. The developer source claims the iPhone 14 and 14 Max (the rumoured bigger iPhone that will replace the mini) will ship in green, purple, blue, black, white, and red colours. It’s worth noting that these likely don’t reflect the actual names of the colours since Apple likes to be a little fancy in the department. For example, the iPhone 13 came in ‘Midnight’ (black) and ‘Starlight’ (white), although the rest of the colour options just were the names of colours: Green, Pink, Blue, and (Product) Red.

As for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, we can reportedly expect the same graphite, silver, and gold colours as the iPhone 13 Pro line. There might be green and purple options too.

No durability improvements, but MagSafe will get better

Next up, the developer source claimed the iPhone 14 won’t feature any “notable” durability improvements. Apple reportedly tested a version of the iPhone 14 made with titanium, but ultimately dropped it due to “cost and manufacturing process issues.”

Moreover, the iPhone 14 display will use the same Gorilla Glass coating as the iPhone 13, so don’t expect many improvements to display durability or scratch resistance.

As for MagSafe, the source claimed Apple would increase the strength of the magnets in the phone to improve the experience with accessories like the MagSafe Wallet and Battery Pack. Speaking of the Battery Pack, the source said Apple planned a new MagSafe battery accessory that would be “exclusive” to the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. However, it’s not clear what this accessory is.

The source also noted that wired charging speeds would increase to 30W — matching other recent reports — while wireless charging would remain the same (a.k.a. slow).

Moreover, the new iPhones will reportedly sport the same storage configurations as before, starting at 128GB. Finally, the source said Apple’s new A16 chip, which will only be available in the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, only offers a “few percent” performance boost over the A15 chip featured in the iPhone 13 line. However, Apple reportedly has worked to improve thermal management to squeeze more performance out of the A16. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max are expected to run the older A15 chip.

Although the information above seems credible and lines up with other leaks, it’s worth keeping a healthy level of skepticism when it comes to leaks. Frankly, we won’t know any of these details for certain until Apple’s September 7th event.

Likely fake iPhone 14 Pro leak hints at 6GB of RAM in all versions

There are few things I enjoy more than a sketchy, likely not accurate iPhone leak, especially when it relates to a piece of hardware Apple often pretends doesn’t exist.

As reported by 9to5Mac and tweeted by Shrimp Apple Pro, a recent Weibo social media post states that all versions of the iPhone 14 will feature 6GB of RAM, alongside a purported leaked image of the smartphone’s packaging.

If accurate, this would be the third year in a row that Apple’s ‘Pro’ iPhones feature 6GB of RAM but would be a bump up for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, which currently offer 4GB with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini (the mini is expected to be discontinued this year).

It’s worth mentioning that RAM is a technical spec Apple has never emphasized regarding its smartphone line. This is partly because of how tightly integrated iOS is with the smartphone’s hardware, but also because the company’s mobile operating system is far less resource-intensive when compared to Android.

Further, the leaked image from Weibo seems just to be the white pull tab that opens the iPhone 14’s box place on top of a weird render of the iPhone 14 Pro. Why? Who knows. Check it out below, and you’ll likely end up confused, just like me.

As always, approach all leaks with an air of skepticism, especially this one. Yes, it’s a slow news day.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices are rumoured to feature the tech giant’s A16 chip, while its iPhone 14 devices will stick with the iPhone 13 series’ A15 processor. The Pro models will also likely feature a pill-shaped camera cutout and a 48-megapixel wide camera capable of shooting 8K video.

Apple is expected to reveal its iPhone 14 line at its September 7th ‘Far Out’ event.

iPhone 14 Pro rumoured to offer 30W GaN charging, same USB-C-to-Lightning connector

If a leaker with a mixed track record is accurate, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro could offer 30W Gallium Nitride (GaN) charging and a USB-C-to-Lightning connector.

According to Twitter user DuanRui (via 9to5Mac), a third-party charger brand has been sending out review products to the media, indicating that Apple will offer 30W charging functionality with the iPhone 14. It’s unclear if Apple also plans to manufacture its own official GaN charger or if it will rely on third-party accessory makers.

DuanRui says that the iPhone 14 Pro will still feature the same “Lightning interface” and USB-C-to-Lightning cable as its predecessor. Apple isn’t expected to make the jump to USB-C with the iPhone until 2023 with the iPhone 15.

Typically when leaks from relatively unknown sources like this appear, I ignore them. That said, this time around, it looks like there’s likely at least some level of truth to the report, given this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a GaN charger making its way to the iPhone line.

For example, in March, often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple could release a GaN charger in 2022. Given Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) adapter currently offers GaN fast charging, it makes sense that the tech giant would also bring the tech to its iPhone line. The iPhone 13 Pro currently officially supports 20W charging (though it can reportedly hit 27W with some chargers).

For those who are unaware, GaN chargers are smaller, more efficient power bricks capable of charging devices at faster speeds.

Apple is expected to reveal its iPhone 14 series during its upcoming “far out” September 7th event.

Cost of Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series could increase by 15 percent

Apple’s high-end 2022 iPhones could cost more than their predecessors.

According to a recent tweet from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will reportedly cost 15 percent more than the iPhone 13 Pro series.

Though a price increase is never good for consumers, given the iPhone 14 Pro is rumoured to feature a new hole-punch, pilled-shaped front-facing camera, it’s not surprising the tech giant is upping the cost of its higher-end devices.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices are rumoured to feature the tech giant’s A16 chip, while its iPhone 14 devices will stick with the iPhone 13 series’ A13 processor.

To put this price increase in perspective, the iPhone 13 Pro costs $1,399 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max costs $1,549. This means that if Kuo’s report is accurate, iPhone 14 Pro will cost in the range of $1,608 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could cost $1,781 in Canada.

It’s unclear if the rumoured iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will also receive a price hike.

With Apple’s September iPhone event just around the corner, we likely won’t have to wait long to know for sure how much the tech giant’s next generation of iPhones will cost.
