Xcode 14 Beta suggests iPhone 14 Pro models to feature always-on display

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 lineup, including the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to be revealed at an event in September, and leaks and rumours about the line continue to pour in.

We already know that the high-end devices from the series are expected to feature a new A14 chip, while the lower-end devices will offer last year’s A13. The iPhone 14 Pro smartphones are also rumoured to get a new pill-shaped camera cutout and a 48-megapixel wide camera capable of shooting 8K video.

Now, according to MacRumours, the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to feature an always-on display tech, a feature Samsung first released in 2016 with the S7 series and Nokia introduced in 2013 with the 6303.

The information comes via the latest Xcode 14 beta, as mentioned on Twitter by MacRumours contributor and iOS developer Steve Moser.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Apple introducing always-on tech in the iPhone 14. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said that Apple’s iOS 16 will feature support for the tech, while another iOS developer, @rhogelleim, noted that Xcode 14 beta 4 features code tied to the iPhone 14’s always-on Display in its SwiftUI preview.

Further, according to MacRumours, the latest iOS 16 beta hints at a ‘Sleep’ state for wallpapers, which is likely a darker version of normal wallpapers to be displayed when always-on is turned on to conserve battery.

Always-on tech is reported to be coming only to the Pro variants of the iPhone 14 lineup, which are likely to feature adaptive refresh rate displays that vary from 1Hz to 120Hz.

Apple will reserve new A-series chips for high-end Pro iPhones: report

Over the last few months, several rumours and reports said Apple would include a more powerful A16 chipset exclusively in the upcoming high-end iPhones — presumably called iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

The lower-cost iPhone 14 and 14 Max (a rumoured new, 6.7-inch screen iPhone set to replace the less popular iPhone mini) would still use the A15 chip currently available in the iPhone 13 line.

Initially, the rumours suggested the change was because of ongoing chip shortages, but now reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple will continue the tiered chip strategy going forward. In a blog post, Kuo wrote:

“The latest processor chip will be exclusive to iPhone high-end models in the future, so a high shipment proportion of iPhone high-end models will be the norm, favoring high-end camera component suppliers.”

Kuo goes on to explain that the shift towards tiered chips in iPhones will likely push sales of the high-end models, which have the new chipset. Kuo expects the high-end iPhone 14 Pro models to account for roughly 55 to 60 percent of shipments in 2022 compared to the roughly 40 to 50 percent split seen with previous models.

The change marks a significant departure from how Apple has handled iPhones for years. New iPhone models almost always include the same chip, meaning customers could get similar levels of performance whether they bought the cheapest option or the most expensive. Typically, differentiating factors included display and camera hardware. With this change, the iPhone would follow a similar hardware model to Apple’s iPad and Mac lines with lower-cost options using older or slower chips.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out with customers in the long run. Those who purchase the lower-end iPhone models will likely have less incentive to upgrade. For example, iPhone 13 and 13 mini owners will likely have little or no reason to upgrade to the iPhone 14 if it uses the same A15 chip. Sure, the change could push upgrades from the iPhone 13 series to the iPhone 14 Pro line, but typically those buying the non-Pro iPhones don’t need the extra features.

Regardless, we won’t know exactly what Apple has planned until the company unveils its new iPhones in September. Kuo is typically reliable, but as with any rumour like this, it’s important to maintain a healthy level of skepticism.

All iPhone 14 models expected to feature 6GB of RAM

All four of Apple’s iPhone 14 devices will reportedly feature 6GB of RAM, rather than the higher RAM amount being exclusive to the Pro. These devices are expected to launch later this year, with a reveal sometime in September.

Taiwanese research firm TrendForce claims that all iPhone 14 models will be upgraded to a more power-efficient type of RAM known as LPDDR5. While the Pro models may offer this type of RAM, TrendForce expects the entry-level iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max to feature LPDDR4X.

For reference, all four models of the iPhone 13 feature LPDDR4X. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini both support 4GB of RAM. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offer 6GB of RAM.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that iPhone 14 Pro devices will support the LPDDR5 technology. Previously, TF International Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature the upgraded RAM technology. This also came with the report that the Pro models may also feature Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip.

It’s worth noting that the above does not include iPhone 14 mini because rumours point to Apple ditching the tiny smartphone from its 2022 lineup. Instead, Apple will reportedly offer a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple typically holds a keynote event in September to showcase its iPhone lineup. There’s currently no word on when the event will be held.

Alleged iPhone 14 Pro renders reveal pilled-shaped selfie shooter and massive camera bump

Jon Prosser is back at it again, this time with new iPhone 14 Pro renders based on recent leaks surrounding Apple’s upcoming smartphone.

In the sometimes-reliable Prosser’s latest YouTube video on ‘Front Page Tech,’ he outlines the iPhone 14 Pro’s substantial camera bump and the front-facing pill-shaped camera sensor. Past leaks have indicated that these are the two most notable changes coming to Apple’s high-end iPhones this year in terms of design.

Check out the renders below up Front Page Tech:

The iPhone 14 Pro concept design also reveals slimmer bezels and the smartphone’s rumoured 48-megapixel camera system that features a 57 percent larger sensor than the iPhone 13 Pro. The smartphone’s corners also seem to be slightly more curved than the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series, leading to an overall smoother design.

The renders also show off the iPhone 14 Pro’s rumoured Purple colour, along with Graphite, Silver and Gold. Like the YouTuber’s past leaked-based renders, Prosser worked with concept graphic designer Ian Zelbo on these designs.

iPhone 14

While Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will feature the new front-facing pill-shaped camera, rumours point to the iPhone 14 sticking with the familiar notch design. As always, it’s important to point out that these are just renders based on leaks and that the final version of the iPhone 14 Pro might be vastly different.

Prosser recently stated that Apple plans to revamp the Apple Watch significantly with this year’s Series 8. The YouTuber made a similar prediction last year, but the redesign didn’t happen. Apple is expected to reveal a new version of the Apple Watch SE, a more durable Apple Watch ‘Explorer Edition’ and the Series 8 this year.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro could feature a massive camera array

If these leaked case photos are accurate, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro smartphones might feature a borderline comically large camera bump.

The image, shared initially on China-based social media platform Weibo and then posted on Twitter by ‘DuanRui,‘ shows off four cases for Apple’s rumoured iPhone 14 lineup: the 6.1-inch iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

To be clear, we don’t know for sure what Apple will call its next smartphone, so these names are based on rumours. For example, there’s a possibility Apple could shift back to the ‘S’ naming scheme and call its 2022 smartphone the iPhone 14S.

That said, it’s expected that Apple will ditch the iPhone mini from its lineup with the iPhone 14 series following poor sales of the mini version of the tech giant’s smartphone over the past few years.

Based on the leaked case photo, the camera bump for the iPhone 14 looks reasonable, but the iPhone 14 Pro series’ array is massive and takes up the majority of the smartphone’s upper half, pushing well past the size of the current iPhone 13 Pro’s/iPhone 13 Pro Max’s. YouTuber Unbox Therapy recently published a video showing off the size of the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s camera bump if you want a better look at the expansive array.

According to earlier leaks, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will reportedly feature a 48-megapixel camera that shoots at 12-megapixels through pixel binning, which turns four pixels into one and results in a better quality image. Samsung’s high-end smartphones have featured pixel binning for the last few years. Other rumours point to Apple’s high-end 2022 iPhones featuring the ability to shoot 8K video.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro is rumoured to ditch the now-familiar notch for a pill-shaped front-facing hole-punch shooter that sounds strikingly similar to the ‘Infinite-O’ display Samsung has featured in its devices for several years. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 will reportedly still include a notch.

Apple will likely reveal its iPhone 14 series this coming fall.

Apple’s iPhone 14 won’t feature 48-megapixel wide camera or A16 chip

Shifting directions from previous years, it appears Apple’s iPhone 14 is poised to be a step under the iPhone 14 Pro in a few key ways.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and his ‘Power on’ newsletter, only Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a new 48-megapixel wide camera and more powerful A16 chip. iPhone 14 devices, on the other hand, will include the same 12-megapixel wide shooter and A15 chip as the iPhone 13 series.

This isn’t the first time this rumour has appeared either. A few weeks ago, often-reliable KGI Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple’s non-pro iPhone 14 models will likely still be powered by the iPhone 13’s A15 chip due to the ongoing global chip shortage.

Gurman goes on to say that the iPhone 14 Max will feature a 6.7-inch display, bringing a ‘Max’ sized iPhone to Apple’s lower-end flagship. Further, the report states that the iPhone 14 series will look very similar to the iPhone 13 series with one notable design shift. According to Gurman, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will feature a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID and a circular cutout for the camera, borrowing a key feature from Samsung’s Galaxy S series line and ditching the notch entirely.

Finally, Bloomberg reports that previously rumoured satellite connectivity features that allow iPhone users to report emergencies and send texts when no cellular service is available could finally make its way to Apple’s iPhone 14 series.

Apple’s iPhone 14 devices will likely be revealed this coming Fall. As usual, expect a flurry of rumours surrounding the smartphone to appear over the course of the coming summer.

CAD renders show what the iPhone 14 Pro might look like

New computer-aided design (CAD) renders might help you visualize what Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 series could look like.

Shared by 91Mobiles, these renders are based on iPhone 14 leaks and rumours, and are only meant to be used as a reference to what the upcoming device might look like.

The renders show the iPhone 14 rocking a notch-less design and a hole-punch front camera layout, which other phone manufacturers have been using for years now. Whereas the rear camera housing appears to be identical to the iPhone 13 Pro, with three cameras, a flash, a LiDAR sensor and a mic.

Everything else seems to be identical to the current iPhone 13 Pro, including side buttons and speakers being in the same spot.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a notch-less iPhone 14. Back in September of last year, YouTuber Jon Prosser shared the same information, stating that the next iPhone won’t feature a notch, although his leak also stated that the rear camera module would sit flush with the body of the smartphone, something that contradicts 91Mobile‘s CAD renders.

Rumours in the past have also suggested that the iPhone 14 will ditch the lightning port in favour of a completely wireless phone, although that also might be untrue, according to 91Mobile‘s report. Additionally, according to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo only Apple’s higher-end Pro model iPhone 14 devices will feature its new A16 chip.

Apple’s iPhone 14 will reportedly feature an upgraded 48-megapixel primary camera

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 will reportedly ditch the current 12-megapixel camera setup and upgrade to a 48-megapixel array, according to credible Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, at first reported by 9to5mac.

It’s likely that the 48-megapixel primary lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro max, while the iPhone 14 and 14 mini (if Apple doesn’t discontinue it) would likely maintain the same camera setup.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a 48-megapixel iPhone leak. A recent report from Jeff Pu, an industry analyst that works with the Asia Customer Supply Chain, echoes Kuo’s report.

A previous leak by YouTuber Jon Prosser suggests that Apple’s 2022 iPhone won’t feature a notch and will instead include a Samsung-like front-facing hole-punch camera. The smartphone is tipped to not include a camera bump due to a slightly thicker body, allowing several lenses, a flash and a LiDAR scanner to sit flush with the phone’s back.

Apart from the aforementioned upgrade, Kuo suggests that the 2023 iPhone — likely called iPhone 15 — will feature a periscopic lens, similar to the Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy S21 Ultra, allowing the smartphone to offer better optical zoom.

As always, take these rumours with a pinch of salt and remember nothing is confirmed until Apple reveals official information about its next-gen iPhone.

Here are the Samsung Galaxy S22, Google Pixel 6 and iPhone 14 leaks from this past week

Images, renders and videos of upcoming smartphones continuously leak. These leaks can be challenging to follow, so we compiled a list of the past week’s hottest rumours.

From September 18th to September 24th, we saw a couple of leaks about the Pixel 6, Galaxy S22 and even a foldable iPhone.

Below are all the major smartphone leaks from September 18th to September 24th:

Samsung

Google’s support page lists Android devices that are certified to support Play Services for ARCore, and mysteriously, the still-not-officially-announced Galaxy S21 Fan Edition is now on it.

For more on the leak, click here.

Well-known tipster Ice Universe tweeted that “Note is over, but it’s not over. S becomes Note!” This likely means that at least some upcoming S series smartphones will be a bit more Note-like.

Perhaps this means that the S22 Ultra will include an S-Pen slot next year? While the Galaxy S21 Ultra worked with the S-Pen, users had to buy it separately. This could also mean we might get a more square-shaped Note smartphone this year.

Samsung isn’t working with Olympus on its cameras like was previously leaked. According to LetsGoDigital, Olympus/OM Digital Solutions GmbH, told the publication that the company isn’t planning to work with Samsung.

Further, Olympus didn’t say whether or not the partnership was on the table at one point. With that, it seems that the Galaxy S22 series won’t feature Olympus branding of any kind.

For more on this leak, click here.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will reportedly sport a slightly curved display with a 6.8-inch display and a high refresh rate. The dimensions OnLeaks provided measured in at roughly 163.2 x 77.9 x 8.9mm with a thickness of 10.5mm if you include the camera bump.

It also seems that the device features a P-shape camera module with a quad-camera setup with a variety of sensors. One of the lenses is evidently a square-shaped periscope lens, which means the phone will have probably 10x zoom.

This isn’t an actual leak, but it’s still pretty cool.

This concept smartphone design comes from the Technizo Concept YouTube channel, which partnered with LetsGoDigital.

Check out the video below:

Over the weekend, OnLeaks released renders of the Galaxy S22 and S22+ that show off a slightly tweaked design. Both phones are reportedly smaller than their predecessors.

You can read more about the renders here.

Google

We now have another leak indicating that a second Pixel foldable, dubbed ‘Jumbojack’ internally at Google, might be on its way.

Uncovered in the upcoming Android 12.1 code by 9to5Google, the foldable reportedly features a dual-display setup similar to the Samsung Z Fold 3, with main and cover displays that shut off depending on how you’re using the device.

For more on this leak, click here.

Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 Pro has turned up in a hands-on video posted online, giving viewers a good look at the back of the device and what appears to be a refreshed setup screen.

Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro recently turned up on Canada’s Radio Equipment List (REL).

We’ve known the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro would come here for a while, but it’s nice to see actual confirmation courtesy of the government.

For more on the leak, click here.

It looks like Google will finally offer improved camera hardware in a smartphone with the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

Starting with the primary camera, the hardware will leap significantly to Samsung’s ISOCELL GN1 50-megapixel sensor. The ultra-wide camera will use a 12-megapixel IMX386 sensor, while the 4x optical telephoto camera on the 6 Pro will use a 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor. The phone will reportedly support up to 20x zoom with photos and videos (except 4K, where zoom is capped at 7x) and 4K/60fps video recording.

For more on this leak, click here.

This is just a concept of the aforementioned Jumbojack Pixel leak.

The designer added the look of the Pixel 6 Pro on the back, along with the same type of camera design. There’s also a hole-punch camera on the cover screen in the top left corner, and on the larger inner display, a hole punch shooter on the right side.

For more on this concept, click here.

Apple

The iPhone 14 Pro is rumoured to feature a hole-punch design with a 48-megapixel wide camera.

According to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, 2022 will see the release of “two new high-end models equipped with a punch-hole display (replacing the notch area design) and a 48MP wide camera.” Kuo says these phones, which are expected to be called the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, will be the only ones in Apple’s 2022 lineup to feature the “punch-hole display.”

In addition to the 14 Pro and Pro Max, Kuo says there will be a “new and more affordable 6.7-inch iPhone” (presumably the iPhone 14) coming in fall 2022 as well. Ahead of that reveal, though, they expect a new iPhone SE with 5G support in the first half of 2022.

For more about this leak, click here.

Apple might be going for a significant design refresh with its rumoured future foldable, according to Business Korea.

The report states that the Cupertino, California-based tech giant’s first foldable smartphone will feature a 7.5-inch display panel developed by LG. We recently reported that LG is currently developing a new ‘Real Folding Window’ display material that doesn’t leave creases, a problem that is still prevalent in new Flip 3 and Fold 3 smartphones. Considering Apple’s focus on perfection, the ‘Real Folding Window’ is definitely a component could be integrated into Apple’s foldable.
