Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus is now available

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus is now available in Canada at the Apple Store and other retailers.

Pricing for the sizable 6.7-inch smartphone that replaces the mini line is the following:

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus is identical to the iPhone 14, including its squared-off edges, dual-camera setup with minor camera upgrades over the iPhone 13‘s shooters, and A15 bionic chip. This is the first time Apple has released a larger version of its base-level iPhone. It’s also worth noting that the iPhone 14 Plus is the same size as Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple thinks the iPhone 14 Plus will be a hit

I liked Apple’s iPhone mini line, but even when it was first revealed, I didn’t expect it to be a top seller for the tech giant.

In the back of my mind, I hypothesized that despite the vocal clamouring for a smaller iPhone from many on social media, this very specific audience remained relatively small. Fast-forward to 2022, and the 5.4-inch mini line is mostly dead (Apple still sells the iPhone 13 mini, for now), so perhaps I was correct on some level.

This is where the new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus comes in.

Everything that I wrote in my recent Phone 14 review also relates to the new Plus, including the same overall aesthetic as the iPhone 13, its great display that lacks a 120Hz refresh rate and a camera that offers very marginal upgrades over its predecessor. You still don’t get the new ‘Dynamic Island,’ an additional zoom lens or even the A16 chip. Beyond its larger size, the iPhone 14 Plus is entirely identical to the iPhone 14.

With respect to both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus, neither smartphone is a bad device and, in fact, they’re some of the most solid smartphones out there, but they aren’t particularly exciting either — especially if you plan to move from an iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 to the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 Plus

Whether Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus — which releases on October 7th, just a few weeks after the rest of the iPhone 14 line — finds an audience remains to be seen, but anecdotally, I know of at least five people that have been waiting for the tech giant to drop an entry-level 6.7-inch iPhone and that plan to buy the Plus.

While I recently made the switch to the Pro from the Pro Max, Apple’s big smartphones offer several advantages. The larger display makes watching TV shows or movies and playing games a more enjoyable experience. Even reading and browsing the web is better on the Plus’ 6.7-inch screen. For nearly all tasks, the more screen real estate you have, the better.

Where the big boi phone experience falls apart for me is when I have to slide the device into my pocket or hold it in my hand for an extended period of time. I’d say my hands are pretty average-sized, and holding the iPhone 14 Plus for longer than a few minutes is a far less comfortable experience than the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. It also barely makes it into my pants pockets. That said, the Plus is lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, weighing 203g compared to 240g. When holding both smartphones in your hands at the same time, the weight difference is instantly noticeable.

I can’t help but think Apple has market research to back up the death of the mini and the introduction of the Plus, but on the other hand, I assumed that was the case when it first released its tiny smartphone, and here we are. Only time will tell if the somewhat strangely named iPhone 14 Plus finds an audience wide enough for Apple to keep it around.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus releases on October 7th starting at $1,249.

Note: In the coming days, my iPhone 14 review will be updated with my thoughts about the iPhone 14 Plus.

Apple exec says iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island is an example of “Apple-like development”

In a recent interview, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, says that iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max’s ‘Dynamic Island’ is the first significant change to the iPhone’s user experience since the release of the iPhone X five years ago.

During the interview with Japanese magazine Axis (via MacRumors), which also features Alan Dye, Apple’s vice president of human interface design, the executives discuss how the new display cut-out blurs the line between software and hardware, with Dye describing the Dynamic Island as an example of “Apple-like development.”

Dye emphasized that the Dynamic Island allows both the iPhone 14 Pro’s hardware and software to work together in tandem in a unique way:

“For one purpose, our hardware and software partners will come together in the same studio to solve the problem together. This new feature also made it possible to display alerts, notifications, and ongoing operations in real-time without seeing the boundary between hardware and software. I think it’s a good example of Apple-like development.”

Below is an excerpt from Federighi’s portion of the interview:

“It’s probably the first major operation change in five years since the iPhone X came out. Five years ago, we lost the home button with iPhone X. This has fundamentally reviewed various iPhone operation methods, such as how to unlock the lock screen, return to the Home Screen, and how to switch apps. This new feature has also changed the appearance of the iPhone, and it made me think again about how to run multiple apps, notifications, and how to manage the ongoing behavior in the background. It was a very exciting challenge for us to consolidate what is happening on our iPhone into this small interactive place.”

While I like the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island, it doesn’t do much beyond interacting with a few Apple-made apps. Hopefully, once the cut-out’s development API is in the hands of developers, more third-party apps will support the unique feature.

While only Apple’s ‘Pro’ devices feature the Dynamic Island this year, recent rumours point to the cut-out making its way to the tech giant’s entire iPhone 15 lineup.

How to find the songs you’ve Shazamed with Siri

If you own an iPhone, you likely already know that you can ask Siri “What song is playing” and the voice assistant will provide you with an answer using the power of the music discovery app Shazam.

However, short of screenshotting every Siri/Shazam request, there are several more accessible ways to do this. If you have an Android phone, check out this story to learn how you can discover music in the real world.

The simplest way is to have Shazam on your iPhone. Boom — open the app, check your history, and you’re good to groove.

However, since Shazam is already built into Siri, you’re probably asking yourself, “is there a way to use it without the app?” There is, and it requires minimal setup.

Open your iPhone’s Setting app and navigate to the ‘Control Centre’ section near the top. Then tap on the green plus icon beside the ‘Music Recognition.’ This moves the Shazam toggle into Control Centre so you can quickly access it without having to trigger Siri.

On top of that, you can tap and hold on the new ‘S’ icon, which shows you a list of your recently searched songs.

Here’s how iOS 16 can help you clean up your photo library

If you own an older 64GB base storage iPhone and find yourself needing to make room for new applications, or you’ve just got a spammy friend group that repeatedly sends photos and videos, iOS 16’s new ‘duplicate detection’ feature can help you claim some of your storage back.

In the past, third-party applications like Remo or Photo Cleaner were the go-to solution to get rid of duplicates in your photo library. Now, with iOS 16, Apple has baked the directly in the Photos app. You can use the feature if you’ve got iOS 16 installed on your iPhone 8 or later released device.

  1. Head to the Photos app on your iPhone and switch to ‘Album’ view
  2. Scroll down to ‘Utilities’ and look for a ‘Duplicates’ folder. You’ll see all duplicate photos under this folder.
  3. You have the option to merge specific photos, and keep duplicates for others, or you can select all from the top right and merge all the photos at once.

That’s it. Once merged, all or the duplicates you individually selected will be converted into a single photo, and they’ll take up half the space they were originally consuming.

Apple starts iPhone 14/14 Plus manufacturing in India

Last month, a Bloomberg report covered by MobileSyrup suggested that starting in October, Apple’s iPhone 14 would be manufactured in India. October is still a week away, though it seems the manufacturing has already begun.

The Cupertino, California-based company made the announcement today, Monday, September 26th, via Bloomberg, roughly three weeks after unveiling the new iPhone 14 lineup.

Initially, India-based manufacturing plants only assembled Apple’s iPhone SE, but have progressed to assemble other Apple devices too, including the iPhone 13, with Foxconn being the main supplier in the nation for the iPhone 13, and Wistron responsible for the iPhone SE. Normally, manufacturing doesn’t start taking place in the same calendar year as the device’s release. This makes the iPhone 14 the first smartphone to have its production shifted from China to India in mere weeks.

“We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” an Apple spokesperson told Bloomberg.

The devices are being manufactured in Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility near the city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu.

People familiar with the matter say that resolve in supply chain issues sped up the transition of manufacturing from China to India, quoting that Apple is seeking alternatives to China due to its pandemic-related lockdowns and clashes with the US government. “India is now an attractive location for manufacturing as it offers better labour cost structure while Apple is looking to reduce geopolitical risks,” said Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, in a statement given to Bloomberg.

It is worth noting that Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility in India will manufacture the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models, while the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are still being exclusively manufactured in China. The Indian factory is reported to make roughly five percent of the total monthly iPhone manufacturing volume, which translates to about five percent of the total iPhone volume.

Apple’s iOS 16.0.2 update fixes camera shake and copy and paste permission issue

The iOS 16 fix many people have been waiting for has arrived.

Apple’s iOS 16.0.2 update, which includes a fix for the third-party app camera vibration issue, the copy and paste permissions bug, the display going all black during setup and more, is now available.

Other fixes include touch input problems with the iPhone X, iPhone XR and iPhone 11 after the devices have been serviced, and a problem tied to VoiceOver not being available after rebooting.

To download the update, head to ‘General,’ ‘Software Update,’ and finally, select ‘Download.’

Given how recently iOS 16 dropped, Apple moved pretty swiftly to release this fix.

iPhone 14 Pro features hidden setting enabling black-and-white always-on display

If you’re like me and you’ve turned off the iPhone 14 Pro/iPhone 14 Pro Max’s always-on display because it’s killing the smartphones’ battery too quickly, this hidden option might interest you.

As reported by 9to5mac, a somewhat hidden option removes all colour from the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on screen, making it more like the always-on displays offered by Android manufacturers like Google and Samsung.

To get the black-and-white always-on display up and running, you need to enable a ‘Focus Mode’ called ‘Dim Lock Screen,’ which darkens the iPhone 14 Pro’s display with always-on enabled.

To find this feature, head to ‘Settings’ and select ‘Focus.’ Next, tap ‘Options’ and ‘Enable Dim Lock Screen.’ And that’s it. The next time the smartphone’s always-on display is active, it will display the date, time and your selection of widgets in black-and-white and not colour.

iPhone 14 Pro always-on screen

The downside is that you’ll need to keep the ‘Dim Lock Screen’ Focus Mode enabled all day for the feature to continue working. It’s also important to note that Widgets for apps like Spotify will still appear on the lockscreen in colour.

Apple could eventually bring a more official version of this feature to iOS 16, but given the tech giant’s insistent on forcing features on users even when they don’t work as advertised, this is highly unlikely.

Still, this could be worth a try if you want to save battery life and still have the always-on display enabled.

U.S. iPhone 14 includes plastic spacer to fill SIM card hole

Apple made a controversial move this year by removing the SIM card slot from U.S. iPhone 14 models, and surprisingly, there’s still a gap on the motherboard for the SIM tray that the company has plugged with a plastic spacer.

This isn’t entirely surprising, considering that all non-American iPhones still feature SIM card slots, but it’s funny to see that a small useless piece of plastic has replaced the functional SIM card tray. It looks similar in size to a shallow keyboard key.

Alongside this tiny piece of plastic, iFixit also discovered that the iPhone 14 models (but not the iPhone 14 Pro models) have been rebuilt internally to make them easier to repair their front and back.

Beyond that, it will be interesting to see what Apple does next year and if all global iPhone models feature the same spacer. In its repair guide, iFixit hopes that Apple will fill this space with a MicroSD card reader in the future, but I wouldn’t hold my breath given the tech giant’s track record.

I’m personally hoping for a small compartment where I can store a single mint.

iOS 16.1’s beta visually changes the iPhone’s battery percentage indicator

Apple’s second iOS 16.1 beta adds a notable missing feature to the recently released operating system update.

Instead of just showing a number in the battery indicator in the top right corner of the smartphone when the percentage is turned on, the tiny battery now visually shifts depending on the device’s charge (via MacRumors).

Before this update and in the current public version of iOS 16, the visual battery indicator remains stagnant and always displays as full with the percentage on, whether your iPhone is 100 percent or 30 percent charged.

The visual battery indicator will likely get a public release in the coming weeks.

Apple offered the battery percentage indicator for several years but killed off the feature when the iPhone X launched in 2017. However, with the release of iOS 16, it’s back and compatible with all of the tech giant’s recently released smartphones.
