iPhone 14 Pro’s ‘Dynamic Island’ holds tremendous potential (Video)

There’s a ton of hype surrounding the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s new ‘Dynamic Island’ cutout, but what does it do and what apps does it even work with?

Instead of being the central location for all notifications like some assumed, the Dynamic Island is a quick way to access specific widgets. However, third-party app support is unfortunately very limited, though this will likely change once Apple releases the cutout’s development API.

Check out the video above for a full breakdown iPhone 14 Pro’s new Dynamic Island, check out the video above.

iOS 16.1 beta brings battery percentage indicator to iPhone mini and XR

Apple’s iOS 16.1 beta update allows iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR owners to turn on the new battery percentage indicator that was added to other iPhone devices alongside the recent release of iOS 16.

While Apple initially offered the battery percentage indicator option for several years, it ditched the feature back when the iPhone X launched in 2017. However, it’s now making a comeback, though the percentage indicator isn’t flashy and is just a very basic-looking number dropped within the familiar battery indicator.

It’s also strange that the visual battery indicator doesn’t actually change, regardless of how charged the iPhone’s battery is. For example, in the image above, my iPhone 14 Pro Max is at 30 percent and is indicated by a number, but not actually visually in the battery image.

Still, even with its issues, it’s nice that Apple is listening and bringing the numerical battery indicator back.

The next public release of iOS 16 will likely include the ability to add the battery percentage indicator to the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR.

iPhone 14 Review: Familiar design with camera upgrades

Apple’s new iPhone 14 is a lot like the iPhone 13.

It features the same overall design with squared-off corners, a dual rear-facing camera with a sizable bump and the now very familiar display notch, with most of the changes to the device occurring under the hood. The main wide shooter has been upgraded with a larger sensor, improving the base-level iPhone 14’s low-light performance by a slim margin.

The iPhone 14 also marks the first time Apple has released its entry-level smartphone with a lesser chip when compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. This year’s base-level iPhone includes last year’s A15 chip (with an extra GPU core) vs. the new A16 in the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 13 Pro top down shotThe main question surrounding the iPhone 14 is if it’s the iPhone the average Apple user should buy like has been in the past. To some extent, this is still true.

“Apple likely could have got the Dynamic Island working with the notch, but it also seems intent on separating both devices..”

It features an excellent camera, solid battery life and a great-looking OLED display. Still, even more so than the iPhone 14 Pro, it’s a marginal upgrade over the iPhone 13 that will likely only be worthwhile if you’re using an iPhone 11 or older that doesn’t feature an OLED display.

For an in-depth look at the iPhone 14 Pro, check out my review.

What’s new?

The short answer to the above question is not a lot. The iPhone 14 Pro’s overall design and its 6.1-inch 1170 x 2532 pixel resolution display match its predecessor, including the now familiar notch. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer the potential-filled ‘Dynamic Island’ front-facing display cutout this year.

Apple likely could have found a way to make the Dynamic Island work with the notch, but it also seems intent on separating both smartphones to an extent, offering those considering buying the Pro a reason to opt for the more expensive device.

Nearly all of the iPhone 14’s upgrades are tied to the smartphone’s cameras, which Apple says features 49 percent better low-light performance thanks to its new main sensor and its ‘Photonic Engine,’ the new version of its ‘Deep Fusion’ tech (also known as Sweater Mode) that now occurs earlier in the photo process. For those unaware, the Photonic Engine is Apple’s branding for the tech giant’s computational photography, which combines machine learning and hardware to boost photo quality.

Other iPhone 14 upgrades include Face ID working in landscape orientation, and ‘Cinematic Mode’ supporting up to a 4K resolution at 30fps alongside Dolby Vision HDR. The new ‘Action mode,’ available on the iPhone 14 Pro (check out a test clip here), is also featured in the iPhone 14 and seems to perform similarly to the iPhone 14 Pro. It smooths out movement in video, but features a significant amount of contrast and doesn’t work well under low-light

Even the iPhone 14's chip is the same as last year's, with the iPhone 14 still featuring the A15 bionic, though it does include an additional GPU core. Does this mean much in daily use? Not really. Still, the A15 is powerful enough to run iOS apps, and I didn't experience any slowdown during my time with the smartphone.

Camera upgrades

The iPhone 14's 12-megapixel main shooter features larger 1.9μm pixels and a wider f/1.5 aperture, which is a minor step from its previous 12-megapixel f/1.6 1.7μm shooter last year. Further, the ultra-wide remains identical at 12-megapixels f/2.2, though the camera's quality is marginally improved thanks to the Photonic Engine.

I've often argued that offering iPhone 14 users some level of optical zoom would be far more helpful than an ultra-wide lens. Unfortunately, Apple seems to have no interest in ditching the wide-angle shooter from the base-level iPhone camera array.

Flipping the iPhone 14 around to the front, the new TrueDepth camera system still housed in the notch now offers a wider f/1.9 aperture, which is a step above last year's f/2.2 aperture, allowing more light into the sensor. More importantly, the camera now supports autofocus, making it easier to snap crisp selfies quickly.

So what do all these new specs mean when actually taking photos with Apple's new iPhone 14?

First, the ultra-wide lens in the iPhone 14 snaps images nearly identical to the iPhone 13's. As you can see in the photo above, both photographs look almost identical. You could argue that the iPhone 14's ultra-wide shooter is slightly sharper, but the difference is barely noticeable.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14's upgraded selfie shooter offers noticeable white balance and detail improvements. You can see more detail in my face and the focus is slightly sharper. Still, as you may have already noticed, there's a theme here, and the difference isn't substantial.

It's really under low-light where the power of Apple's Photonic Engine and upgraded iPhone 14 shooter come into play, but even then, the images look very similar.

In this low-light shot of a very dirty BMW, the colours pop slightly more and the focus is crisper in the iPhone 14 image, but again, both photographs are strikingly similar.

All three of the above smartphone's main cameras, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, perform remarkably similarly under ideal lighting conditions, as you can see above, with the iPhone 14 Pro offering slightly more colour vibrancy and definition in the mural's bricks. That said, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 main camera shots look pretty much identical to my eye.

While Apple's claims regarding the iPhone 14's cameras are likely mostly accurate, just like the iPhone 14 Pro vs the iPhone 13 Pro, the law of diminishing returns comes into play here. The images indeed do generally look better, but there's not that much of an improvement.

Everything else

Other new features worth noting include Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection, which you can read more about in my iPhone 14 Pro review. Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro also supports iOS 16, which adds features like the new customizable Lock Screen, the ability to pull back messages, an expanded Maps app and more. Lock Screen customization is already a hit and one of my favourite iPhone features to release in the last few years.

The iPhone 14's battery life is impressive, measuring in at well beyond a day and even into the following day with moderate use, backing up Apple's claim that the iPhone 14 offers great battery life (the tech giant says the iPhone 14 Plus features the best battery life ever offered in an iPhone).

Finally, there are also new colours this year, including a variant of ‘Product Red,’ ‘Purple,’ and ‘Blue.’ While the new hues look fine, I prefer the more pastel colours Apple has featured in past versions of the base-level iPhone.

Note: This review will be updated with impressions of the iPhone 14 Plus when I'm able to get my hands on the smartphone. Beyond its larger 6.7-inch size, the device is identical to the iPhone 14. The smaller 5.42-inch iPhone mini is now dead, though Apple is still selling the iPhone 13 mini.

Apple gave every iPhone 14 a bigger battery except the Pro Max

When Apple unveiled its iPhone 14 lineup at the ‘Far Out’ event last week, the company claimed had improved battery life compared to last year’s iPhone 13 series. While we’ll still need to wait and see if that holds true for real-world tests, at least now we can check the actual battery size.

As usual, Apple didn’t share technical specs details, like specific battery size or RAM, for the iPhone 14 line. However, thanks to a filing on the Chemtrec website spotted by 9to5Mac, we now know the official battery sizes for each iPhone 14 model. Chemtrec details battery in watt hours (Wh), but MacRumors also found leaked battery sizes in milliampere-hour (mAh) from a regulatory database in China. We’ve included the numbers below alongside the iPhone 13 series:

It's worth noting that Wh and mAh are different measures. Wh measures electric energy and includes battery voltage (specifically, Wh is often used to measure the energy consumption of a device), while mAh is a measure of electric charge.

It's also worth keeping in mind that there's more than just the size of the battery at play. Factors like the efficiency of the chip can impact battery life too. Apple's new A16 Bionic chip uses a 4nm process and should be more efficient than last year's 5nm A15 chip (although 5nm is still very efficient). In other words, the iPhone 14 Pro Max having a slightly smaller battery than the 13 Pro Max shouldn't matter too much, assuming the increased efficiency of the A16 is enough to offset the difference.

Still, almost across the board, it looks like the iPhone 14 series features larger batteries than comparable iPhone 13 models. That should mean iPhone 14 owners will enjoy a little extra longevity out of their new iPhones.

Steve Jobs’ daughter unimpressed with new iPhone design

After the world took shots at the lacklustre design changes in the iPhone 14 compared to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, the daughter of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs has reportedly weighed in.

Coming from a Twitter post citing an Instagram story, it appears that Eve Jobs (yeah, that’s her name) has shared a meme roasting the iPhone 14’s design.

That is all. Do with this what you will.

If you want to read more about Apple’s new gear, you can find it all here.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus Hands-on: Bigger display and minor camera upgrades

With the new iPhone 14 line, Apple has gone big.

The iPhone mini is dead — though the iPhone 13 mini is still available for now — and in its place is a new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus that measures in at the same 6.7-inch display size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Despite people clamouring for the mini, several reports indicate it didn’t meet Apple’s sales expectations. Apple is a company that doesn’t do anything unless it’s extremely calculated, so it likely has data indicating that people want a bigger, cheaper iPhone.

Beyond the size change, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus look similar to last year’s devices, including the squared-off sides and notch. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are ditching the notch in favour of the very interesting cutout called the  ‘Dynamic Island.’

That said, the iPhone 14 does feature the same always-on display as the Pro variants. Apple makes some pretty lofty claims about the always-on screen not significantly affecting battery life that I’m not entirely sure I believe. Still, I’m looking forward to testing them out for myself.

This year, the iPhone 14 isn’t getting the upgrade to the new A16 chip and is instead sticking with the A15, though it does feature an extra GPU core, giving it a minor power boost.

iPhone 14

On the camera side, the 12-megapixel sensor now features a larger 1.9-micro sensor, and the front shooter offers autofocus. There’s also still the same 12-megapixel wide and ultra-wide shooter. I know it will likely never happen, but I wish Apple would bring a telephoto lens to the base-level iPhone since I find it more useful than the ultra-wide. I briefly tested the camera out in Apple’s hands-on area, and it seems to focus more quickly when taking selfies, but more testing is required.

There are also new colours, including a new variant of ‘Product Red,’ ‘Purple,’ and ‘Blue.’ While they look cool, I prefer the more pastel hues Apple has gone with in the past for its standard iPhone.

Beyond the above changes, not much else is new with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Apple’s new devices are an incremental update over their predecessors when it comes to hardware. It will be interesting to see if Apple’s bet that people want a larger, cheaper iPhone will pay off.

The iPhone 14 Plus starts $1,250 and the iPhone 14 costs $1,099. Pre-orders start on September 9th, and the iPhone 14 releases on September 16th, while the iPhone 14 Plus drops on October 7th.

The top five announcements from the fall Apple event

Apple’s fall 2022 event featured several new devices and products that continue to propel Apple’s dominance in the technology sector. To provide you with a summary, here are the top five announcements from the event, in no particular order.

Emergency SOS via satellite

Apple has developed a new method to help people connect with emergency services in remote areas lacking cell towers. Available on the iPhone 14, Emergency SOS via Satellite will allow the handset to use its antennas to connect to satellites. It will then connect the device to a ground station, a relay center and emergency services. More information on the feature is available here.

New AirPods Pro

Apple’s second edition of the AirPods Pro features noise cancellation that’s twice as good as the first edition. Users can also use their iPhone to scan a room and adjust the Spatial Audio of the earbuds to their space, creating a personalized effect. The new AirPods also feature the H2 chip, allowing for enhanced high-bandwidth connections and longer battery life. You can find more details here.

Watch Series 8 and women’s health

Apple’s new Watch Series 8 features an ‘Always On’ display and new watch faces. But perhaps the most significant update is its focus on women’s health. It features an ovulation tracker utilizing the new temperature sensor. Overnight, the temperature sensor tracks changes every five seconds to show women when their ovulating, digitizing a method that largely relies on tracking apps and at-home tests.

New features through the iPhone 14 Pro/ Pro Max

Apple has released several new features under the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Two of the most notable ones have to be ‘Dynamic Island’ and ‘Always-On Display.’

Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped display cut-out used for the selfie cam and Face ID. It also shows notifications and other indicators, such as an incoming call. The company also introduced the long-anticipated Always-On Display. The feature can operate as low as 1Hz and automatically dims the lock screen. You can read more on all the new features here.

Apple Watch Ultra

Perhaps Apple’s most prestigious smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra, features a larger display and is designed for outdoor activities.

On one side, the device features an ‘action’ button that can be used to activate a number of features. The other side of the watch has a digital crown and button to be used while wearing gloves. It also features three microphones and two speakers to help make calls outdoors.

The Apple Watch Ultra will cost Canadians a whopping $1,099. It officially releases on September 23rd but can be pre-ordered today. More information is available here.
