Apple announces large and in-charge iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14

The rumours were correct, and Apple has slightly updated the iPhone 14 with new colours, cameras and a new size. However, that comes at the cost of a new iPhone mini.

The new standard iPhones still come with two cameras on the rear, a notch for FaceID and the selfie camera and the A15 chip, which should be faster and improve gaming performance on the new iPhone.

The phones come with 6GB of RAM and start at 128GB of storage as well, so the specs should be more than enough for most people. Anyone needing a faster phone can upgrade to the iPhone 14 Pro series, which has numerous improvements.

The most significant change to the standard iPhone 14 lineup is the new iPhone 14 Plus. This device mimics the screen size (6.7-inches) and larger battery of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but without the fancy cameras, cutout and chip upgrade. We’ve yet to test the phone, but ideally, it will be a battery life beast.

Apple has been selling 6.7-inch iPhones for years in its high-end category, so it will be interesting to see if the size increase helps the company sell more iPhone 14 models this year. Like the new Apple Watches, the new iPhone 14 has crash detection to help provide help to people who have been in a severe car accident.

The new iPhone 14 also has a new 12-megapixel sensor with OIS and a faster aperture which should help the iPhone capture more information quickly. The selfie camera has also been revamped to be faster and work better in low light. This new front camera also has autofocus, so it should be more versatile.

The new iPhones have enhanced video stabilization called ‘Action mode’ that uses the full sensor to help apply more stabilization to your iPhone footage. This is a small change but it should help the new phones compete with devices like GoPros and DJI action cameras.

Beyond the new features, one interesting update is that all U.S. models of the iPhone won’t have a SIM card tray and will instead use eSIM. There’s no word on how Apple will sell iPhones in Canada, but the writing is on the wall that Apple is pushing even further away from carrier stores.

Another writing on the wall moment is Apple’s new Emergency SOS satellite connectivity. This is an emergency-only function, but it will allow users to reach out to helpful services in case of one of five emergencies. This includes vehicle issues, injury, crime, lost/trapped or fire. This service is going to launch in November and will be free for two years, but it seems like something that Apple might bundle into a subscription in the future.

More passively, this new service also allows you to share your location with friends and family if you’re out on a solo hike or extreme trip via FindMy.

However, it’s not all roses since this larger phone comes with a slightly bigger price tag than we’re used to seeing within the standard iPhone tier. The iPhone 14 Plus begins at 899 USD (roughly, $1,200 CAD) and the iPhone 14 costs, $799 USD (roughly, $1,050 CAD). Pre-order on September 9th, iPhone 14 comes out on Sept 16th and the Plus on October 7th.

There are five colours that are desaturated compared to previous years. The new Blue shade actually reminds me of the iPhone 13 Pro. Beyond that, there’s Midnight, Starlight, Purple and Product Red.

More to come…

iPhone 14, 14 Plus to include ‘enhanced’ A15 chip: report

Ahead of Wednesday’s Apple event, more details about the company’s upcoming iPhones emerged. Apple reportedly plans to ship an “enhanced” A15 chip in its iPhone 14 devices while keeping the focus on the iPhone 14 Pro line.

The Wall Street Journal said Apple’s new iPhones are expected to be more “evolutionary than revolutionary,” with a focus on the higher-cost ‘Pro’ models since those reportedly have sold better than the lower-cost iPhones in recent years, despite a downward trend in the smartphone market overall.

Rumours have long indicated that Apple planned to re-use the A15 chip that debuted with the iPhone 13 line in the new iPhone 14 devices while reserving the new, more powerful A16 chip for the Pro models. There’s been plenty of speculation about why Apple plans to do this after years of offering the same chip on every iPhone mode. Some think it may be due to ongoing chip shortage issues, but the WSJ report makes me think it’s more about differentiating the Pro and non-Pro iPhone models.

What’s particularly interesting, however, is the note about the “enhanced” A15 chip. Unfortunately, the WSJ doesn’t provide any additional information about this, leaving us to wonder what, exactly, is “enhanced” about the chip. I suppose the A15 could just be faster. However, previous rumours indicated the A16 won’t bring a significant speed improvement over the A15 — with that in mind, it seems unlikely that Apple would further narrow that gap by boosting A15 speeds.

Another rumour suggested that Apple’s A16 chip would include improved “thermal management” that could boost performance — perhaps the thermal improvements could be applied to the A15 too.

The rest of the WSJ report mostly reiterates previous rumours and leaks while blending them with speculation about sales numbers. Notably, the WSJ reported that the iPhone 14 would not see a price bump, while the Pro models would increase by about $100 USD (about $131.22 CAD).

We’ll likely learn all the details about the supposedly “enhanced” A15 when Apple unveils the iPhone 14 lineup at its ‘Far Out’ event tomorrow. You can read more about what Apple’s expected to announce here.

What announcements are you most excited for this tech event season?

It’s that time of the year when massive tech companies like Apple and Google launch new smartphones and other devices.

This September, we’re expecting four new iPhone 14 handsets and at least a few Apple Watches. In October, we’ll likely see Google’s Pixel 7 series devices and probably even refreshed iPad Pro tablets. We’re also expecting Microsoft to launch new Surface tablets, laptops and maybe even a Surface Phone.

Alongside new smartphones, tablets and laptops, we’ll also get the first-ever Disney and Marvel Games Showcase in September and, potentially, similar events from PlayStation and Nintendo.

I’m pretty excited for the upcoming iPhone 14 and its rumoured new design, but I’m also looking forward to the Pixel 7 and what Disney’s Lorcana card game has in store.

Let us know what you’re looking forward to this tech season in the comments below.

iPhone 14 Max could actually be called iPhone 14 Plus

What a time to be alive.

Following the release of the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017, Apple dropped the “Plus” naming scheme in favour of the word “Max.” However, it looks like that could soon change yet again, at least as far as the tech giant’s rumoured larger iPhone 14 is concerned.

According to a photo of a clear MagSafe case posted by Twitter user Tommy Boi (Via MacRumors), the rumoured iPhone 14 Max could actually be called the iPhone 14 Plus. This means that Apple’s 2022 smartphone lineup will feature the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and finally, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.

If Apple aims to differentiate the iPhone 14 Max from its larger iPhone 14 Pro Max counterpart, using Plus makes sense to an extent. On the other hand, this name change also results in a more complicated iPhone 14 lineup.

It’s worth pointing out that leaked images like this are relatively easy to fake and that I’m not familiar with Tommy Boi’s track record. That said, MacRumors says that they accurately leaked several iPhone case colours last year, so there could be some truth to this report.

In other recent iPhone 14 news, there’s a possibility that the iPhone 14 Pro’s rumoured pill-shaped (Face ID) and circular display (camera) cutouts will be joined to create one larger oval software. If this rumour is accurate, it could go down as one of the tech giant’s most divisive decisions ever.

Everything we expect to see at Apple’s fall 2022 event

It’s almost that time of year again.

On September 7th at 1pm ET/10am PT, Apple will hold its ‘Far Out’ keynote at its Cupertino, California campus. While the presentation will feature pre-recorded sections, it’s also the first Apple event with live portions in years.

As always, we have a pretty good idea of what we might see at this year’s fall keynote, including the iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Pro, 2nd-gen AirPods Pro and several new Apple Watches, including the redesigned Apple Watch Pro.

Let’s get into it.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

Rumours have been swirling about Apple’s iPhone 14 line for months now. First off, the iPhone mini line is being killed off this year in favour of the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, which will be sold alongside the 6.1-inch iPhone 14.

Apple’s iPhone 14 devices are expected to look very similar to last year, including the visible notch and even the same A15 chip. According to reports, only Apple’s higher-end iPhone 14 Pro models will offer the tech giant’s new A16 processor.

The iPhone 14 will also likely be available in various colours.

On the other hand, Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are set to feature more notable upgrades. According to Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman, alongside a new A16 chip, Apple’s ‘Pro’ iPhones will ditch the front-facing notch for a pill-shaped camera cutout that houses a 48-megapixel wide shooter capable of capturing 8K video, alongside a circular Face ID sensor.

Some reports indicate Apple plans to fill the display space between the pill-shaped cutout and the circular sensor through software, which, if true, is the most Apple move of all time.

Other rumoured iPhone 14 features include stronger magnets that power exclusive MagSafe accessories that only work with iPhone 14 devices, and emergency calling satellite connectivity.

Apple Watch Pro, Series 8 and SE 2

Next, there’s the slew of new smartwatches that could appear at Apple’s upcoming event.

First off, there’s the Apple Watch Pro, a new high-end, Garmin-like take on the Apple Watch. The more durable version of Apple’s smartwatch is rumoured to feature a flat display and a 1.99-inch screen, making it the largest Apple Watch yet.

Other Apple Watch Pro rumours include that the wearable could offer satellite connectivity, though most reports point to this functionality coming to the high-end smartwatch next year. And finally, there’s a possibility that the Apple Watch Pro might not fit seamlessly with older Watch Bands, marking the first time since the wearable’s launch that older straps won’t work with a new Apple Watch.

Other rumoured Apple Watch Pro features include a new S8 chip and a body temperature sensor, which should also be coming to the Series 8 if rumours are accurate. Overall, the Apple Watch Series 8 is tipped to look and function like the Series 7, with most of the upgrades being on the hardware side.

Finally, there’s the Apple Watch SE 2. Rumours regarding Apple’s entry-level wearable are pretty sparse, but there’s a possibility it could be upgraded with an always-on display and a newer chip since the current version of the smartwatch still features an S5 processor.

2nd-gen AirPods Pro

Like the Apple Watch SE 2, rumours surrounding the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro are few and far between. It’s believed that Apple’s new high-end wireless earbuds will feature shorter stems, upgraded mics, improved sound quality and better battery life.

Some reports highlight a new charging case with USB-C charging and lossless audio support. While we haven’t seen many leaks regarding new AirPods Pro, given the wireless earbuds released back in 2019, they’re arguably long overdue for an upgrade.

iPads, iPad Pro/M2 MacBook Pro, new HomePod and AR headset

Most rumours point to Apple once again holding several keynotes this coming fall, with September 7th’s event focused on the iPhone 14, Apple Watch Pro and the AirPods Pro.

A second event set for October will likely focus on the M2-powered iPad Pro and a new HomePod, followed by a third presentation in November aimed at Apple’s M2 chip and the MacBook Pro. There’s also a possibility we might finally catch a glimpse of the company’s AR/VR headset given most rumours point to it releasing in 2023.

Leak details iPhone 14 line colour options, MagSafe improvements

With the release of Apple’s new iPhones on the horizon, the rumour mill is churning out all kinds of information. The latest: the iPhone 14 line will sport a new purple colour, an “exclusive” MagSafe battery accessory, and more.

The information comes from a post on Naver, a South Korean online platform with search and blog capabilities, among other things (it’s kind of like Google). The Naver post cites a “developer source,” (via 9to5Mac) as the backing for various claims about the upcoming iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

First up, the new colours. The developer source claims the iPhone 14 and 14 Max (the rumoured bigger iPhone that will replace the mini) will ship in green, purple, blue, black, white, and red colours. It’s worth noting that these likely don’t reflect the actual names of the colours since Apple likes to be a little fancy in the department. For example, the iPhone 13 came in ‘Midnight’ (black) and ‘Starlight’ (white), although the rest of the colour options just were the names of colours: Green, Pink, Blue, and (Product) Red.

As for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, we can reportedly expect the same graphite, silver, and gold colours as the iPhone 13 Pro line. There might be green and purple options too.

No durability improvements, but MagSafe will get better

Next up, the developer source claimed the iPhone 14 won’t feature any “notable” durability improvements. Apple reportedly tested a version of the iPhone 14 made with titanium, but ultimately dropped it due to “cost and manufacturing process issues.”

Moreover, the iPhone 14 display will use the same Gorilla Glass coating as the iPhone 13, so don’t expect many improvements to display durability or scratch resistance.

As for MagSafe, the source claimed Apple would increase the strength of the magnets in the phone to improve the experience with accessories like the MagSafe Wallet and Battery Pack. Speaking of the Battery Pack, the source said Apple planned a new MagSafe battery accessory that would be “exclusive” to the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. However, it’s not clear what this accessory is.

The source also noted that wired charging speeds would increase to 30W — matching other recent reports — while wireless charging would remain the same (a.k.a. slow).

Moreover, the new iPhones will reportedly sport the same storage configurations as before, starting at 128GB. Finally, the source said Apple’s new A16 chip, which will only be available in the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, only offers a “few percent” performance boost over the A15 chip featured in the iPhone 13 line. However, Apple reportedly has worked to improve thermal management to squeeze more performance out of the A16. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max are expected to run the older A15 chip.

Although the information above seems credible and lines up with other leaks, it’s worth keeping a healthy level of skepticism when it comes to leaks. Frankly, we won’t know any of these details for certain until Apple’s September 7th event.

Likely fake iPhone 14 Pro leak hints at 6GB of RAM in all versions

There are few things I enjoy more than a sketchy, likely not accurate iPhone leak, especially when it relates to a piece of hardware Apple often pretends doesn’t exist.

As reported by 9to5Mac and tweeted by Shrimp Apple Pro, a recent Weibo social media post states that all versions of the iPhone 14 will feature 6GB of RAM, alongside a purported leaked image of the smartphone’s packaging.

If accurate, this would be the third year in a row that Apple’s ‘Pro’ iPhones feature 6GB of RAM but would be a bump up for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, which currently offer 4GB with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini (the mini is expected to be discontinued this year).

It’s worth mentioning that RAM is a technical spec Apple has never emphasized regarding its smartphone line. This is partly because of how tightly integrated iOS is with the smartphone’s hardware, but also because the company’s mobile operating system is far less resource-intensive when compared to Android.

Further, the leaked image from Weibo seems just to be the white pull tab that opens the iPhone 14’s box place on top of a weird render of the iPhone 14 Pro. Why? Who knows. Check it out below, and you’ll likely end up confused, just like me.

As always, approach all leaks with an air of skepticism, especially this one. Yes, it’s a slow news day.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices are rumoured to feature the tech giant’s A16 chip, while its iPhone 14 devices will stick with the iPhone 13 series’ A15 processor. The Pro models will also likely feature a pill-shaped camera cutout and a 48-megapixel wide camera capable of shooting 8K video.

Apple is expected to reveal its iPhone 14 line at its September 7th ‘Far Out’ event.

Apple looking to have its iPhone 14 launch on September 7

It looks like Apple is aiming to host its iPhone 14 launch event on September 7th, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, sourcing “people with knowledge of the matter.”

The new iPhones will also come with multiple new Macs, low-end and high-end iPads and three Apple Watch models. The Cupertino-based company is poised to have its new iPhones in stores about a week and a half after the unveiling if the company sticks to its usual pattern. Bloomberg states that some retail store employees have been told to prepare for a September 16th product release.

Additionally, Apple will stream the event online rather than having an in-person gathering. According to Bloomberg, employees have also started recording the presentation segments over the past few weeks.

Bloomberg, along with previous rumours, suggested the standard iPhone will eliminate the 5.4-inch mini model this time and add another model with a 6.7-inch display. This will be the first time a non-Pro iPhone comes with that screen size.

Further, the company will reportedly have significant changes for its Pro lineup. Apple will replace its notch with a pill-shaped hole for Face ID and a hole-punch size for the camera. The handset will also sport a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto shooters. And Apple is planning on making improvements to video recording and battery life.

There will also be the new Apple Watch Series 8 sporting new features for women’s health, including a body temperature sensor. The smartwatch will look similar to the Series 7, but Bloomberg says there will be a new pro model that’s poised to look sportier, will have a larger display, come in a rugged titanium case, and have more battery life.

Also coming in September is iOS 16, the software that will run on the next iPhones, as well as watchOS 9 and new versions of iPadOS and macOS.

Lastly, Bloomberg reports that Apple is working on a low-end iPad with an A14 chip, USB-C port, and new iPad Pro models with M2 chips.

Nothing is confirmed until Apple’s official announcement, and it’s possible it may change the date. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has an excellent track record, so we’ll likely see the handset then.

Cost of Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series could increase by 15 percent

Apple’s high-end 2022 iPhones could cost more than their predecessors.

According to a recent tweet from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will reportedly cost 15 percent more than the iPhone 13 Pro series.

Though a price increase is never good for consumers, given the iPhone 14 Pro is rumoured to feature a new hole-punch, pilled-shaped front-facing camera, it’s not surprising the tech giant is upping the cost of its higher-end devices.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices are rumoured to feature the tech giant’s A16 chip, while its iPhone 14 devices will stick with the iPhone 13 series’ A13 processor.

To put this price increase in perspective, the iPhone 13 Pro costs $1,399 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max costs $1,549. This means that if Kuo’s report is accurate, iPhone 14 Pro will cost in the range of $1,608 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could cost $1,781 in Canada.

It’s unclear if the rumoured iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will also receive a price hike.

With Apple’s September iPhone event just around the corner, we likely won’t have to wait long to know for sure how much the tech giant’s next generation of iPhones will cost.
