Base iPhone 14 models to use different grade materials for OLED panels over Pro models

The OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone 14 may see slightly different grade materials used. Depending on the model tiers, supplier Samsung Display is reportedly utilizing varying materials.

Apple has yet to officially announce its new flagship device. However, many expect the new series to be available in four models. As is tradition, Apple is expected to launch four models, two being its base models and two Pro variations. While unconfirmed, many expect the series to include the base iPhone 14, Max, Pro, and Pro Max.

New reports claim that Samsung Display will be using the “latest and most advanced” material sets for the Pro models of iPhone 14. Reports now expect the supplier to use its prior generation materials for the OLED panels of iPhone 14 and Max, however. The reasoning behind this is to save on costs.

Samsung Display is using its M11 material set for the base 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 models. The two higher-tier Pro models are expected to use the supplier’s M12 material set.

The result of this means that there will be a slight difference in pixel quality between the base models and the high-end iPhone 14s. However, for the average user, the differences aren’t likely to be noticeable. Apple has proven to make good use of OLED panels in the past. This news shouldn’t raise any red flags as of yet.

However, this does show yet another example of how the base iPhone 14 models differ from their Pro counterparts. In June, reports came forward stating all models will support 6GB of RAM. However, only the Pro models may support the upgraded LPDDR5 type of RAM.

Another big difference to come from the iPhone 14 series is the departure of a ‘mini’ model. This year, many expect Apple to replace it with the Max model, moving away from a smaller form factor.

We’ll know for certain when Apple reveals the full lineup. Historically, the company hosts a September keynote to announce new products, including the iPhone.

Some iPhone 14 rear cameras are reportedly experiencing ‘quality issues’

Following up on last week’s report that some of Apple’s memory panel suppliers are experiencing component shortages, it now seems that the iPhone 14’s rear camera is suffering from “quality issues.”

According to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple recently changed rear camera suppliers following experiencing “coat-crack quality issues” with the iPhone 14’s rear shooter. Kuo says the tech giant made this move to avoid significant iPhone 14 production delays, but that it could still switch back to its original supplier.

With this in mind, there’s a possibility that this could result in limited iPhone 14 supplies in the smartphone’s launch window, though Kuo says this is unlikely.

Apple is rumoured to have plans to launch four new iPhone models this coming fall, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. The iPhone mini line likely won’t return this year. Apple’s high-end devices are expected to feature a new A14 chip, while the lower-end devices will offer last year’s A13.

The iPhone 14 Pro smartphones are also rumoured to get a new pill-shaped camera cutout and a 48-megapixel wide camera capable of shooting 8K video.

Other notable rumoured upgrades include a larger f/1.9 aperture, better low-light performance and improved autofocus in the iPhone 14 Pro/iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple will likely officially reveal its iPhone 14 devices during an event in September.

Apple facing supply issues with iPhone 14, though impact should remain limited

Apple’s upcoming flagship iPhone 14 series is reportedly facing supply issues as the company prepares for its release. Suppliers are experiencing shortages in regards to components. However, TF International Securities’ Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes this should have a limited impact on the mass production of the devices.

I have learned that recently some iPhone 14 panel and memory suppliers have experienced supply issues,” Kuo says in a tweet. While on the surface, this could be cause for concern given that Apple historically reveals and launches a new iPhone around September each year. However, Kuo continues to explain that other suppliers can help fill the gap.

As Kuo notes, Samsung is “almost the sole supplier for 3Q22 and can meet iPhone 14 Pro production ramp-up demand.” Kuo expects Micron & SK Hynix to begin shipping in Q4 2022 at the earliest. Micron’s certification schedule is said to have started later. Hynix, on the other hand, encountered quality issues.

As far as panel suppliers go, Kuo predicts that Samsung and BOE will fill the gap caused by LG Display. The panel supplier ran into appearance issues in regards to the base iPhone 14 and Max models. However, Kuo says LG Display “should not take much time to address the issue.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the iPhone 14 is facing supply issues. In May, it was reported that some of the iPhone 14 series devices could be delayed due to COVID-19 lockdowns in China. Additionally, the ongoing war in Ukraine could also pose hurdles for Apple’s supply chain.

Apple hasn’t shied away from juggling the releases of certain iPhone models. For instance, in 2018, Apple launched the iPhone XR ahead of its more premium iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Perhaps the iPhone 14’s lineup could face a similar rollout given the production conditions.

As previously noted, Apple’s likely to launch the iPhone 14 this fall. Though, we’ll have to await official confirmation from the company at its keynote later this year.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max will reportedly be the only iPhone with periscope lens

The iPhone 14 series is still several weeks away from release, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning out new reports surrounding Apple’s inevitable iPhone 15 line.

According to a report from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature an optical zoom periscope lens that measures in at 12-megapixels 1/3″ sensor with 6x optical zoom. Apple’s current iPhone 13 Pro features 3x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom.

If accurate, this would be the first time since the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max that Apple has offered features exclusive to the larger version of the smartphone. The iPhone 12 Pro Max featured sensor-shift image stabilization and was the only device in the iPhone 12 line to offer 2.5x optical zoom.

Samsung’s S series Ultra smartphone line has featured a periscope lens for several years now, so this would be yet another example of the Cupertino, California-based tech giant playing catch-up with one of its key competitors in the space. Samsung’s S22 Ultra offers 10x optical zoom through its periscope lens.

Kuo says that the standard iPhone 15 Pro will still feature a regular telephoto lens for optical zoom, though the analyst says that the periscope lens will make its way to the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro max.

This year, Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro and 12 pro max are expected to offer a notable camera upgrade, jumping from 12-megapixels to 48-megapixels, alongside a higher-quality front-facing shooter.

Apple’s iPhone 14 line, which is expected to feature the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (the mini is dead) will likely be announced in September 2022.

iPhone 14 case leaks suggest a possible Plus model

With the Apple iPhone 14 soon on the way, a new leak suggests the device could have a Plus model.

Originally tweeted by DuanRui, an image shows a spread of four different-sized cases which were posted by a Weibo user.  The most notable one, on the middle right side, appears to be larger, meaning it could have some correlation to an iPhone 14 Plus.

Another feature to highlight is the camera bump, with similarities to the iPhone 13’s model. Though, this time it’s larger as pointed out on Weibo, indicating a Plus model.

However, a potential iPhone 14 Plus would indicate that the iPhone Mini would no longer be produced according to leaked schematics from Weibo in April 2022.

If so, the iPhone 12 and 13 would be the last iPhones to include a Mini model.

Apple will reserve new A-series chips for high-end Pro iPhones: report

Over the last few months, several rumours and reports said Apple would include a more powerful A16 chipset exclusively in the upcoming high-end iPhones — presumably called iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

The lower-cost iPhone 14 and 14 Max (a rumoured new, 6.7-inch screen iPhone set to replace the less popular iPhone mini) would still use the A15 chip currently available in the iPhone 13 line.

Initially, the rumours suggested the change was because of ongoing chip shortages, but now reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple will continue the tiered chip strategy going forward. In a blog post, Kuo wrote:

“The latest processor chip will be exclusive to iPhone high-end models in the future, so a high shipment proportion of iPhone high-end models will be the norm, favoring high-end camera component suppliers.”

Kuo goes on to explain that the shift towards tiered chips in iPhones will likely push sales of the high-end models, which have the new chipset. Kuo expects the high-end iPhone 14 Pro models to account for roughly 55 to 60 percent of shipments in 2022 compared to the roughly 40 to 50 percent split seen with previous models.

The change marks a significant departure from how Apple has handled iPhones for years. New iPhone models almost always include the same chip, meaning customers could get similar levels of performance whether they bought the cheapest option or the most expensive. Typically, differentiating factors included display and camera hardware. With this change, the iPhone would follow a similar hardware model to Apple’s iPad and Mac lines with lower-cost options using older or slower chips.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out with customers in the long run. Those who purchase the lower-end iPhone models will likely have less incentive to upgrade. For example, iPhone 13 and 13 mini owners will likely have little or no reason to upgrade to the iPhone 14 if it uses the same A15 chip. Sure, the change could push upgrades from the iPhone 13 series to the iPhone 14 Pro line, but typically those buying the non-Pro iPhones don’t need the extra features.

Regardless, we won’t know exactly what Apple has planned until the company unveils its new iPhones in September. Kuo is typically reliable, but as with any rumour like this, it’s important to maintain a healthy level of skepticism.

iPhone 14, rugged Apple Watch, new HomePod and more coming soon: report

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is back at it again.

In his latest report, the often-reliable reporter outlines what he describes as the “deluge” of Apple products set to arrive this fall, including four iPhone 14 devices, new iPad Pros, three Apple Watches, several M2 Macs, new AirPods Pro and possibly even a more powerful Apple TV and a new HomePod.

While most of these devices are rumoured to arrive this fall, it’s unlikely Apple will show them all off at the same event. Similar to years past, the tech giant will probably hold several hardware keynotes over the next few months.

With that out of the way, let’s get into it:

Gurman says that Apple has plans to reveal an M2 Mac mini, M2 Pro Mac mini, an M2 Pro/M2 Max 14/16-inch MacBook Pro and a new M2 Ultra/M2 Extreme Mac Pro. Apple is also reportedly already working on next year’s M3 chip that will launch alongside next year’s new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air.

On the iPhone 14 side, Gurman says that only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will feature Apple’s new A16 chip and an always-on display. Other new iPhone 14 Pro features include a 48-megapixel camera sensor and a pill-shaped Face ID camera cutout, backing up previous rumours. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 is expected to feature an A15 chip — the same processor included in the iPhone 13 — and a new 6.7-inch version that will replace the Mini.

New 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models that feature Apple’s M2 chip are also on the way. Looking to the future, 14-inch and 15-inch iPad models coming at some point in the “next year or two,” and even a new entry-level iPad with Apple’s A14 chip and USB-C could drop soon.

Gurman says that Apple’s often-rumoured rugged Apple Watch will launch alongside the Series 8 and a refreshed SE this fall. Similar to past rumours, the watch will reportedly be geared towards “extreme sports.” Apple is sticking with the same performance level as its S7/S6 chip for the Series 8’s rumoured S8 chip.

A new Apple TV that features the company’s A14 chip and extra RAM could arrive this fall, says Gurman. Apple’s AirPods Pro could also receive an upgrade that offers a faster chip and improved sound this year.

And last but not least, a new HomePod is on the way, but it likely won’t appear this fall. Gurman says the new smart speaker features the same size and audio quality as its predecessor but has a new display, multi-touch functionality and a more powerful S8 chip.

All iPhone 14 models expected to feature 6GB of RAM

All four of Apple’s iPhone 14 devices will reportedly feature 6GB of RAM, rather than the higher RAM amount being exclusive to the Pro. These devices are expected to launch later this year, with a reveal sometime in September.

Taiwanese research firm TrendForce claims that all iPhone 14 models will be upgraded to a more power-efficient type of RAM known as LPDDR5. While the Pro models may offer this type of RAM, TrendForce expects the entry-level iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max to feature LPDDR4X.

For reference, all four models of the iPhone 13 feature LPDDR4X. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini both support 4GB of RAM. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offer 6GB of RAM.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that iPhone 14 Pro devices will support the LPDDR5 technology. Previously, TF International Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature the upgraded RAM technology. This also came with the report that the Pro models may also feature Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip.

It’s worth noting that the above does not include iPhone 14 mini because rumours point to Apple ditching the tiny smartphone from its 2022 lineup. Instead, Apple will reportedly offer a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple typically holds a keynote event in September to showcase its iPhone lineup. There’s currently no word on when the event will be held.

TSMC to manufacture Apple’s A16 Bionic chip for iPhone 14

Apple is once again working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to develop the upcoming A16 Bionic chip for iPhone 14.

Ahead of its expected launch this fall, TSMC is tasked with manufacturing the new chipset powering the iPhone 14. TF International Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo spotted the manufacturer’s published roadmap, indicating the news. According to Kuo, TSMC is manufacturing the chip on the same fab process as the current A15.

In addition, Kuo believes that TSMC will only be making minor improvements to Apple’s A16 Bionic chip. Previously, rumours indicated that only the Pro models of the iPhone 14 feature the A16. The base model of the upcoming iPhone lineup may only support the existing A15 Bionic chip.

In addition, Kuo believes that the next-gen MacBook Air will unfortunately not feature the rumoured M2 chip. Instead, the device will maintain support for the M1, given that the M2 may not be available until 2023.

There’s no official word on when Apple intends to reveal nor launch the iPhone 14. Historically, Apple opts to hold a September event, where it showcases the new flagship device in full.

However, recent reports claim some iPhone 14 models could face a delay due to supply chain issues. Whatever the outcome, it won’t be long until we get a full understanding of Apple’s plans for its new line of devices.

Some iPhone 14 models could reportedly be delayed

At least some of Apple’s iPhone 14 series devices could be delayed due to China’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns, according to a new report from the Japanese publication Nikkei.

Citing several sources familiar with the upcoming smartphone line’s production, Nikkei says that iPhone assembler Pegatron was forced to suspend its operations in Shanghai and Kunshan earlier this year. Shanghai remains in a restrictive city-wide lockdown that’s currently in its seventh week.

Following its earnings report last week, Apple’s chief financial officer Luca Maestri warned that the ongoing war in Ukraine could also result in supply-chain issues for the company. According to Nikkei, there’s a possibility that the initial production of the entire iPhone 14 line could be affected by this issue. In years past — like with the iPhone XS/XS Max and iPhone XR, for example — specific iPhone models have been delayed several weeks, so this wouldn’t be entirely out of the ordinary for the tech giant.

Apple’s iPhone 14 line will likely release this fall. Rumours hint that the iPhone 14 Pro series will feature a pill-shaped front-facing camera cutout and that iPhone 14 devices will continue to feature a notch. YouTuber Jon Prosser recently published renders of the iPhone 14 Pro based on leaks surrounding the device, revealing a sleek design that borrows its front-facing camera from Samsung’s S10+, which launched back in 2019.
