Alleged iPhone 14 Pro renders reveal pilled-shaped selfie shooter and massive camera bump

Jon Prosser is back at it again, this time with new iPhone 14 Pro renders based on recent leaks surrounding Apple’s upcoming smartphone.

In the sometimes-reliable Prosser’s latest YouTube video on ‘Front Page Tech,’ he outlines the iPhone 14 Pro’s substantial camera bump and the front-facing pill-shaped camera sensor. Past leaks have indicated that these are the two most notable changes coming to Apple’s high-end iPhones this year in terms of design.

Check out the renders below up Front Page Tech:

The iPhone 14 Pro concept design also reveals slimmer bezels and the smartphone’s rumoured 48-megapixel camera system that features a 57 percent larger sensor than the iPhone 13 Pro. The smartphone’s corners also seem to be slightly more curved than the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series, leading to an overall smoother design.

The renders also show off the iPhone 14 Pro’s rumoured Purple colour, along with Graphite, Silver and Gold. Like the YouTuber’s past leaked-based renders, Prosser worked with concept graphic designer Ian Zelbo on these designs.

iPhone 14

While Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will feature the new front-facing pill-shaped camera, rumours point to the iPhone 14 sticking with the familiar notch design. As always, it’s important to point out that these are just renders based on leaks and that the final version of the iPhone 14 Pro might be vastly different.

Prosser recently stated that Apple plans to revamp the Apple Watch significantly with this year’s Series 8. The YouTuber made a similar prediction last year, but the redesign didn’t happen. Apple is expected to reveal a new version of the Apple Watch SE, a more durable Apple Watch ‘Explorer Edition’ and the Series 8 this year.

Apple may be eyeing titanium iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, according to recent patents

A new patent granted to Apple shines a light on the possibility of the company developing a titanium iPhone, iPad and MacBook. Apple has dipped a toe in titanium designs in the past, with the Apple Watch being the proven test ground.

The patent was first filed on September 26th, 2019, and was granted on May 24th, 2022. The filing describes an application related “ to an enclosure for a portable electronic device.” As it continues, the patent outlines a textured surface for titanium parts. “The enclosure includes a titanium substrate having a textured surface that includes randomly distributed peaks separated from each other by valleys,” the document reads.

The patent also goes on to describe the challenges a titanium casing for an iPhone or iPad may hold. It states that portable devices require “a high amount of strength and stiffness to protect “ the internal components. Aluminum and other materials make up the body of most current devices under Apple’s catalogue. These devices must also feature “an attractive surface finish.” As such, there will be a need to implement new techniques to obtain those finishes of certain metals ie: titanium.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a possible titanium iPhone. Last year, there was word that the iPhone 14 may feature a titanium chassis. If true, the iPhone 14 would be more durable, albeit likely more expensive.

As with any Apple patent, there’s no guarantee that a titanium iPhone, iPad, or MacBook will hit the market. Given that a titanium Apple Watch is available, it does make sense that Apple may try to broaden that line. Though, as noted above, certain design challenges loom over this possibility.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro could feature a massive camera array

If these leaked case photos are accurate, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro smartphones might feature a borderline comically large camera bump.

The image, shared initially on China-based social media platform Weibo and then posted on Twitter by ‘DuanRui,‘ shows off four cases for Apple’s rumoured iPhone 14 lineup: the 6.1-inch iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

To be clear, we don’t know for sure what Apple will call its next smartphone, so these names are based on rumours. For example, there’s a possibility Apple could shift back to the ‘S’ naming scheme and call its 2022 smartphone the iPhone 14S.

That said, it’s expected that Apple will ditch the iPhone mini from its lineup with the iPhone 14 series following poor sales of the mini version of the tech giant’s smartphone over the past few years.

Based on the leaked case photo, the camera bump for the iPhone 14 looks reasonable, but the iPhone 14 Pro series’ array is massive and takes up the majority of the smartphone’s upper half, pushing well past the size of the current iPhone 13 Pro’s/iPhone 13 Pro Max’s. YouTuber Unbox Therapy recently published a video showing off the size of the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s camera bump if you want a better look at the expansive array.

According to earlier leaks, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will reportedly feature a 48-megapixel camera that shoots at 12-megapixels through pixel binning, which turns four pixels into one and results in a better quality image. Samsung’s high-end smartphones have featured pixel binning for the last few years. Other rumours point to Apple’s high-end 2022 iPhones featuring the ability to shoot 8K video.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro is rumoured to ditch the now-familiar notch for a pill-shaped front-facing hole-punch shooter that sounds strikingly similar to the ‘Infinite-O’ display Samsung has featured in its devices for several years. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 will reportedly still include a notch.

Apple will likely reveal its iPhone 14 series this coming fall.

Apple’s iPhone 14 won’t feature 48-megapixel wide camera or A16 chip

Shifting directions from previous years, it appears Apple’s iPhone 14 is poised to be a step under the iPhone 14 Pro in a few key ways.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and his ‘Power on’ newsletter, only Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a new 48-megapixel wide camera and more powerful A16 chip. iPhone 14 devices, on the other hand, will include the same 12-megapixel wide shooter and A15 chip as the iPhone 13 series.

This isn’t the first time this rumour has appeared either. A few weeks ago, often-reliable KGI Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple’s non-pro iPhone 14 models will likely still be powered by the iPhone 13’s A15 chip due to the ongoing global chip shortage.

Gurman goes on to say that the iPhone 14 Max will feature a 6.7-inch display, bringing a ‘Max’ sized iPhone to Apple’s lower-end flagship. Further, the report states that the iPhone 14 series will look very similar to the iPhone 13 series with one notable design shift. According to Gurman, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will feature a pill-shaped cutout for Face ID and a circular cutout for the camera, borrowing a key feature from Samsung’s Galaxy S series line and ditching the notch entirely.

Finally, Bloomberg reports that previously rumoured satellite connectivity features that allow iPhone users to report emergencies and send texts when no cellular service is available could finally make its way to Apple’s iPhone 14 series.

Apple’s iPhone 14 devices will likely be revealed this coming Fall. As usual, expect a flurry of rumours surrounding the smartphone to appear over the course of the coming summer.

Apple’s iPhone 14 could include front-facing camera upgrades

Apple’s iPhone 14 series could feature a few long-overdue updates to the smartphone’s front-facing FaceTime camera.

According to a recent tweet from often-reliable KGI Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, all four upcoming iPhone 14 models will feature an autofocus update and a larger aperture.

These changes will likely improve the quality of the smartphones’ Portrait and Cinematic modes. And could even include the performance of FaceTime/video calling apps in terms of depth-of-field and overall image quality.

Previous reports have indicated that the iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a hole-punch/pill-like cutout design. It’s also believed that there will be no mini version of the iPhone 14.

We’ll likely learn more about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 series as we get closer to the tech giant’s annual fall hardware event.

Leaked iPhone 14 case schematics indicate the iPhone mini is dead

It looks like the iPhone mini line’s days are numbered.

This shift in the upcoming iPhone line’s size lineup has been long rumoured, but now, more fuel has been added to the rumour fire. Schematics leaked by a user on Weibo, a notable China-based social media platform, show off the rumoured iPhone 14 line’s case design.

Backing up several previous rumours, there are two 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones, but no 5.4-inch iPhone mini. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models appear to feature three lenses and a LiDAR scanner, just like the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, while the iPhone 14 offers two lenses, like the iPhone 13/13 mini.

The Weibo user also goes on to say the iPhone 14 Pro features a front-facing shooter with an “exclamation point camera design” similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S series, according to 9to5Mac. On the other hand, the rumoured iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will still feature the now-familiar display notch. This corroborates earlier rumours from often-reliable TF International Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo citing the shift in size and the addition of a new A16 chip.

In the past, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also reported that at least some of Apple’s iPhone 14 devices will feature a front-facing hole-punch camera.

Apple’s iPhone 14 line will likely be revealed this fall during the tech giant’s annual fall hardware event.

Don’t expect to see under-display Touch ID in an iPhone before 2025

We’ve been hearing rumours about Apple adding an under-display Touch ID to the iPhone for a while now.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously had predicted that the 2023/2024 iPhones (likely the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16) would feature under-display Touch ID, is now retracting his statement. In a tweet, Kuo added that Face ID with a mask on is “already a great biometrics solution.”

Apple did test under-display Touch ID for the iPhone 13, as reported by Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter back in August 2021, but the company decided to not go forward with the plan.

At this point, leaks about Touch ID coming to iPhones feel extremely fickle, with the bulk of rumours about the feature standing false as per the last few years.

If reports are to be believed, the upcoming iPhone 14 will feature a completely revamped design, with a hole punch camera and under-display Face ID, so it would have been a great opportunity for the company to also add under-display Touch ID to the devices, but now it seems unlikely to happen.

Only Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro devices will get the A16 chip: report

A new report from often-reliable TF International Securities Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that only Apple’s higher-end Pro model iPhone 14 devices will feature its new A16 chip.

If this rumour is accurate, this would mark a fundamental shift in Apple’s smartphone strategy.

Kuo tweeted the news from his new Twitter account, stating that Apple’s mid-range iPhone 14 smartphones will still feature the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13 and the new iPhone SE (2022).

In the past, Apple has included its new smartphone chip in its entire lineup of new iPhones for that year. Kuo goes on to say that all four iPhone 14 devices will feature 6GB of RAM, but that the Pro models will feature LPDDR 5 memory and the standard iPhone 14s will offer LPDDR 4X RAM.

Kuo also says that Apple is ditching the mini from its 2022 lineup and will instead offer a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

It’s unclear if Apple’s decision to limit the A16 to its higher-end 2022 devices is tied to the ongoing worldwide chip shortage or if it’s a strategic move on the tech giant’s part. In other Apple-related news, Kuo also recently tweeted that Apple’s 2023 Mac mini will feature the same form factor as its predecessor.

Apple is expected to reveal its 2022 iPhone lineup this fall.

Apple could release a 30W GaN charger for the iPhone 14

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s new Twitter account is at it again.

According to Kuo, Apple could have plans to release a new gallium nitride (GaN) charger that’s smaller than the company’s current 30W charger.

GaN construction allows chargers to produce less heat and offer a higher charging wattage in a smaller form factor. Apple’s first GaN charger is the 140W brick that comes with the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2022). A 30W version could be used with devices like Apple’s iPhone, iPad and possibly even the MacBook Air.

According to The Verge, Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max can hit a max charging speed of 27W when used with the correct charger. There’s a possibility this new 30W GaN brick could be used with either the iPhone 13 or the upcoming iPhone 14 series. Apple’s current 30W charger is relatively large, so it would be great to see its size cut down a bit alongside the performance improvements GaN technology offers.

Mobile accessory makers like Anker are also working on GaN charger accessories.

In a way, this would be yet another example of Apple playing catch-up with Android manufacturers. Samsung’s S22+ and S22 Ultra are capable of 45W fast charging, and outside of the Canadian market, speeds are even faster. For example, OnePlus’ Nord CE 2 supports 65W charging.

With all of this in mind, it’s likely that if Apple does plan to offer a 30W GaN charger, it won’t be sold in the iPhone 14’s box and will be available separately. Apple hasn’t included a power brick inside its smartphone or smartwatch box for several years now.

It’s unclear if we’ll see this charger at Apple’s event later today. For more on Apple’s big spring keynote, check out this roundup of rumours.

What smartphone tech are you excited for in 2022?

In 2022, we’re expected to see a variety of smartphones from notable players in the industry like Samsung, Apple, Google and more. For example, next week Samsung will almost certainly show off its anticipated Galaxy S22 series.

In 2021, several pretty cool smartphones appeared on the scene. I’m a big fan of foldables, so getting my hands on devices like the Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3 was pretty exciting. I was also thrilled by the Oppo Find N’s unique form factor that offered a more traditional aspect ratio on its cover display.

This year, Google is expected to release a Pixel-branded foldable smartphone, we’ll see the iPhone 14 series, the aforementioned S22 line and maybe even a few surprises from Samsung based on the South Korean tech giant’s Flex G and Flex S foldable form factors (seen below).

With all of this in mind, what smartphone technology are you excited to see this year? Let us know in the comments below.
